her. investigators are trying to see if the attack is related to another unsolved sex crime in that area. it is back to school for children in maryland. officials will hold a news conference at twinbrook elementary school in rockville. they will release the results of a national study on the montgomery county pre-k program and how it could be used as a model for schools across the country. get ready to pay more for metro again. fares are going up 20 cents for the morning rush. you will pay it if you enter metro from 7:30 to 9:00 in the morning. riders have already been shelling out higher fees for the evening rush hour since the beginning of the month. early voting in the hotly contested mayoral race begins in d.c. people can go to the polls from 8:30 this morning to 7:00 this evening. early voting is available at four different centers beginning saturday. you can register to vote and cast your ballot on the same day. the primary is set for september 14th. the gap is widening in the race for mayor. a new poll shows vincent gray with a long lead over mayor fenty. >> reporter: they call themselves women for gray. they are out showing their support. vincent gray was restrained in his reaction to the new poll. >> very encouraging t says that our campaign is resonating across the city, certainly corroborated some of the feelings we get as we travel across the city. >> reporter: the "washington post" olympic of 780 registered democrats found 36% favored adrian fenty compared to 49% for vincent gray t found that, of those likely to vote if the primary, 36% for vote to fenty, 53% for grey. mayor fenty in southeast apparently sensitive to poll results showing him way behind in support of voters east of the river. >> we know that going in in 16 days, we have a race for d.c. mayor. early voting begins today. vincent gray has a significant lead over mayor fenty in a new poll. stacy cohan has all the details. >> reporter: good morning. this is the place you can actually start voting if you choose to partake in the early voting that begins today. when you come to the polls, there will somebody new high- tech offerings. let me show you what the new paper ballot looks like. this new paper ballot can actually be filled out and go through an optical scanner. that is part of some of the new high-tech equipment that will greet d.c. voters. there is a new touch screen monitor available for voting. we are told that either one of those processes will also allow to you go back and recheck your ballot before submitting your final vote. now, if you want to know more information about voting here, we have it for you. down here at the board of elections beginning at 8:30 a.m. and voting goes all the way until 7:00 p.m. at 441 fourth street northeast. can you take the judiciary square metro down here. the doors will open for all of the early voters. there are many races in the city but the one everybody is talking about is the mayor's race. mayor adrian fenty facing off against vincent gray and the new "washington post" poll out after 780 registered voters is showing gray with a 17-point lead among likely voters, a huge lead. that has cast our incumbent mayor, adrian fenty, as the underdog in this race. this will mean that his supporters need to get out to the polls if he is going to pull up from this likely dip. the primary is september speakers called for a continued fight for equal opportunity and an end to poverty and all voting rights for d.c. the rally goers marched from dunbar high school in northwest three miles to a spot where the mlk monument is being built. police are trying to track down a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman had her georgetown home. neighbors say the man got in by ripping the woman's air conditioner oust her window and climbing through. atlantis are checking into whether this crime may be connected to other assaults in that area. they are telling residents not to take any chances. >> we lock our doors every night. we walk home with guys. we try to be safe, yes. >> police are offering a reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction. this past weekend mark the second anniversary of a cold case prince george's county. kanika powell was shot several time in the head in front of her apartment in laurel. there appears to be no motive. she had complained to her parents about two suspicious knocks on the door in the week prior to her murder. we have an update on the triple shooting at a pool party in southeast over the weekend. three people were shot in the 2600 block of brown road early yesterday morning. an elderly woman was hit in the foot and two men were shot in the leg. they are expected to survive. police have not made any arrests an they are still trying to figure out what happened. children in montgomery county, charles county and howard county head back to school today. later today, officials will hollywood a news conference at twinbrook elementary school in rockville where they will release the results of a national study on montgomery county's pre-k program and how that might be used as a mod foal schools across the border late saturday night. police found his body but the 4- year-old and 13-month-old are doing okay today. rescuers started digging a hole for the trapped miners in chile. the mission may take three to four months. the men have been trapped inside that mine since august 5th. back here in the united states, prime time television takes the spotlight as the annual emmy wards are handed out. fox's reporter: katrina left roughly 80% of new orleans under water he can possessing a levee system unable to with stand the storm. the new one is said to be strong enough to hold off the next big one. meantime, a parade complete with a new orleans brass band makes its way across the bridge. politicians vowing to rebuild. >> we are unbroken and we are never, ever, ever going to give up. >> reporter: residents say no matter what the storm took away, their soul is still right here in new orleans. >> we are going to have been a better, brighter and richer community. >> reporter: the city still has plenty of spirit but also faces real problems like the country's highest murder rate, homelessness and 55,000 abandoned buildings five years after katrina. in new orleans, trace gallagher, fox news. as the country remembers what happened five years ago, two storms are swirling in the atlantic. republican tides from hurricane danielle forced warnings along beaches in new jersey. things were so rough, more than 200 people had to be rescued in ocean city maryland. is danielle moving out? >> danielle is gone. >> but it is earl we are keeping an eye on. >> we are focused on earl now. lots of problems this morning in the leeward islands. they have hurricane islands. virgin islands, puerto rico, and we have to look out here along the east coast. not for a direct hit but we'll have a lot of wind and waves associated with earl as it passes to the east later this week. for us, it will be hot. >> no rain j no rain in the next several days. we are in for a dry period here. we'll continue this dry streak that we started late last week. 74 right now at reagan national. generally speaking, if you are outside the urban areas, the direct urban areas including d.c. and baltimore, it is a little cooler. 74 in town. 68 in fredericksburg. 64 in frederick. off to the east, annapolis is 72. in leonardtown, good morning to you. get ready for hot temperatures. yesterday, low 90s. today, mid-90s. we'll be jumping. once again, our temperatures will be very warm under a late august sun, very late in the season for temperature in the mid-90s. but once again, we got it. high pressure anchored right across the washington area. it is not just here in town. it is much of the eastern seaboard going to be enjoying these unseasonably warm temperatures as this high pressure is just right here and it will be very, very slow to move over the next couple of days. so the hot weather tomorrow, wednesday, thursday, friday, it will continue right through the end of the week here. we might get a cold front by late thursday and friday that could spark off a thunderstorm and cooler weather. a lot depends on the eventual track of this storm. this is hurricane earl, maximum winds now 105 miles per hour. that is a category two storm. look out u.s. virgin islands, you have a hurricane warning and then eventual puerto rico. it will position itself off the even coast of the united states as we get into thursday and friday, possibly as a major hurricane. pretty much can guarantee we'll see tropical force winds along the beaches and some strong storm surge here toward the end of the week. ought to the east of earl, we have another tropical wave. we'll see if that doesn't develop. that would be fiona if that develops later this week. sunny skies and a hot afternoon. really want to emphasize how hot it will be. winds out of the north at five miles per hour. your five-day forecast, lots of 90s next couple of days. can you see right through wednesday and thursday, we keep in the 90s. we have to look out for the influence of earl thursday and friday. could bring us some clouds even here in town later in the week. >> let's get to on-time traffic with lauren demarco. she is looking bright and sunny and yellow. >> very good. thank you. overnight construction wrapping occupy 95 between beltways and we should be running at speed. 270 southbound as we head past falls road, volume starting to build but you are still running without delay. northbound, we did have construction to the right side of the roadway. that is wrapping up in the overnight hours. as we head southbound on 95 in virginia, also wrapping up the roadwork there, things have reopened here. this is between newington and lorton. we had the right lane blocked southbound. that look like it has been reopened. northbound back up to speed. northbound looks good as you travel up towards springfield. no problems to report 395. here we are at the beltway at 66. that weekend construction is gone. effect has been picked up. so eastbound 66 at the beltway, you do want to watch for the new lane shift but your lanes will be open. watch as we head into the morning, see if any delays build there. hopefully, very smooth sailing. after 9:30 this morning, the left lane, the exit to the beltway, will shut down for work for ongoing construction today but as of right now for the morning rush, it night announcing that he is making good on his promise to pull out of iraq by august 31st. american troops first rolled into iraq seven years ago. their combat mission is officially over tomorrow. the 50,000 american troops still in iraq will advise and assist iraqi forces. looking back on september 11th, when that airplane first crashed into the pentagon, fire crews from all over the area came to help. the scene was overwhelming and the magnitude of what had happened was impossible to fathom in those moments. today, nearly nine years later, dozen of new york city firefighters have come to arlington bearing a special gift. tisha thompson shows us why a piece of metal means so much to so many. >> reporter: as he grabbed his daughter's hand, assistant chief tim butters tried to plain what happened when she was just two months old. >> we talked about the memorial service today and remembering the folks here in washington at this pentagon and new york who were killed in 9-11. >> reporter: nearly 1,000 people came to watch a parade of new york city firefighters present the arlington county fire department with a piece of steel from the north tower of the world trade center. >> we were able to hand pick a piece. so we searched for many hours looking through the rubble. but this piece we found to be just very painful. >> reporter: articling to be county fire chief james schwartz says they will use the steel to build a memorial here at fire station number 5. >> the ladder truck from this station arrived at the pentagon less than two minutes after dispatch. whatever we do with the memorial is going to be what memorials are supposed to do and that is center people's attention on the memories, on those that were here and sacrificed and so we just want it to have some meaning. >> reporter: as the names of those who died at the pentagon were read aloud, assistant chief butters quietly took in the names of the firefighters who died in new york. >> just to see the names and the units that they're assigned to and like, for example, ray downey, who i knew. just kind of very sobering. >> reporter: unlike his sister, christopher butters says he visibly remembers 9-11. >> i remember they didn't tell us anything in school because they didn't want us all to freak out. probably about 10 kids of our class got taken home that day and we wondered why. seeing him run out the door on a fire and it just kind of scares me a little bit. >> reporter: which might be why this career firefighter admits he held onto his kids a little tighter this day. in arlington, tisha
