Right now in certain states has as you mentioned massachusetts and others and some cities you dont have to answer the question, and for the vast majority of the country do you. Interesting, because there is at least laws in the making or in the works havent gone into effect yet in the city were sitting in right now n d. C. , sherri got to be honest when youre sitting there, do you cite the law when you are facing getting a job that you might want . Well, no. It puts possible in awkward position. Right. Right now employers have the right to ask you because they have a right to set salaries for their own companies. And they always will still that same right to set salaries but when youre sitting in a Job Interview and youre seeking a position hopefully a promotion or your first job, it puts a person in very awkward position because they have no power. Right. In that situation. Right. And so it probably isnt prudent to start citing law back to people, but probably to be diplomatic and come up with a way to answer the question without answering the question. Is this just a matter of, um, employers catching up with the law that is are already out there . Because i couldnt be in an interview or if im ausli lesbian in an interview. Correct. We all know that. But is this just the employers not catching up with whats going on . Well, it will be if they pass the legislation. Right, right. Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced will be introducing it into congress to make a federal law. The issue here is one of has become one of equal pay. Okay. And so that is the that is the current debate actually whether or not theyre good for the country or good for the work force. When we talk about disparity, were talking mainly about women and were talking about people of color here. Yes. Because the statistics tend to show that women and people of color enter the work force at a lower pay rate than the white males who have been traditionally in the work force longer, and the as they go through their careers, and develop and change jobs to get ahead, if they have to disclose their salaries obviously the salaries are already lower than they would have been had they been a mail. Right. Zone it perpetuates it through the course of the ca career. Lets talk about federal workers. Its really a moot point for a federal worker because the pay is Public Record. Right. When youre a federal employee your pay is a Public Record as well as you can go on the opm website if you know what a persons grade and step is you can look right there anywhere in the country you can see how much somebody makes. Okay in the private sector i could think creative ways to say perhaps, well our company hasnt had a raise structure in several years or my potential if i do this, you know, but were still tap dancing around the question trying to get a higher salary. Thats right. So if you come out of the government gone to the private sector its easy for the employer to figure out what you were making before. Okay f youre Going Company to company and companies are notoriously except for maybe some of these internships we just saw. Right exactly. Notoriously silent about what people make for their companies because they consider it proprietary they wont want competitors or anybody else to know, you know, what theyre salary structures are. So it can be very difficult and there is a lack of research on salaries at large across the cun teen some of these companies. Okay. So it makes it hard for job applicants too to do research. Reporter good morning, steve and allison. As response to that criticism the university is hosting what its calling an anti racism campus conversation beginning at 10 00 this morning. Remains to be seen whether that will help calm some of students ire over this issue them really feeling that the university is not addressing their concerns as publicly as they would like. Meanwhile, last night, the university did release that Surveillance Video. It looks like its coming from a couple of different cameras and showing at least or just one suspect from what we can tell this was may first between 3 45 and 4 10 in the morning person was wearing a black longed sleeved shirt, black pants a hat or mask. The suspect traveled from the quad air to the south side and may have got tepp into white or silver sedan near rock wood parkway. Now monday bananas tied with string that resembled nooses were hung in at least three locations on campus. Haram buy bay and aka were written on them referring to the historic black sorority alpha capita alpha. Two other a ba banana incidents on campus last noon town hall was for students over but many walk out before it was over. A large group marked to the office and asked for withdrawal forms. No one has taken that step but students are very frustrated because they feel American University officials are not being transparent. We already knew what the problem was. They just we really wanted to hear specific actions in regards to what the administration was going to do to address the actual problem at hand, and what was going to happen after the investigation. So i think just wanting that kind of information would have given us peace of mind which we just didnt receive. Reporter now, we can tell that you when this incident the earlier incidents happened in september the university told us that they were able to figure out who at least did one of them and handled it through the internal student conduct process but School Officials say that they are now working with the fbi and you can see on these youtube videos also au i racially motivated hate crime. So perhaps this is going to raise it to that next level. The university is also offering a 1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. Developing right now in Prince Georges county, police are looking for murder suspect after a man was shot to death overnight. He was found just after midnight in the parking lot of an exxon station in suitland. This is in the 4700 block of silver hill road. A reward is being offered in this case. The Loudoun CountySheriffs Office says threats made on social media towards Dominion High School not legitimate. The student who made these threats has been identified and located police say they did find guns inside that students home and they long to a relative. They have since been removed from to home. Additional deputies still will be at the school today as precaution. Developing overnight, two people are displaced after their home went up in flames overnight in rockville. Road before midnight. The two people who were inside the home were able to get out safely. It appears they were hoarding conditions in that home. No word yet on what caused the blaze but it does appear to be accidental. Players now say some fans at fenway park in boston shouting racial slurs at them and this is not the first time. Latest incident involving adam jones from the baltimore wisdom back with that story. If you talk to some players some other players in major League Baseball and in some other sports as a matter of fact they will tell you and theyve come out and setter since this all happened that boston is one of the worst places for a black athlete to actually play the games. It shouldnt be like that because these are games for these attacks to happen like this if they want to tack them, a tuck them on their efforts not on racial stuff. Baltimore orioles adam jones says that monday in it during the game against the red sox some of the fans at fenway park not only yelled racial slurs at him but someone later through a bag of peanuts at him. These photos up loaded of the incident on twitter and apparently this is not new news at fenway park for black athletes. In fact, yankees veteran cc sabathia says this is common for fenway park. He says its the only ballpark where he hears racial slurs coming from the fans. Even red sox players have ac actually told management that they have been verbly by racial slurs from their own fans. Other players saying again its the worst police for black athlete to play because of the racial slurs coming from the fans. Last night, though, completely different story. Adam jones walk to the plate, fans at fenway park stood up and cheered for him they gave him standing ovation in effort to show the efforts of some people dont reflect all the fans. I just appreciate what they did. I never oat ott road gotten any ovations or anything like that. Just appreciative that action was taken and that not everybody feels the same way as selected people. Went on to say these kinds of things are bigger than the game. In fact after the monday night incident the red sox owner john henry also visited with jones and the manager buck show walter manager for the orioles to apologize for the fan behavior. Henry and president sam kennedy say security and will permanently revoke fans ticket rights for offensive language. Kennedy says, this is a reminder of where we are in society that this type of behavior still happens around the country. So very disturbing but i cant say that its surprising again lots of athletes say this is common at fenway park and some venues in boston this is common for the black athletes to be tacked with racial slurs. Lets get back to fox5 exclusive now we first reported on the hundreds of Prince Georges County School employees placed on leave after allegations of misconduct and abuse. School district adopted the new policy last year to address major child abuse cases now weve learned that some of those workers wont be returning to despite having their names cleared. More than 600 Prince Georges County SchoolStaff Members have been placed on administrative leave this school year alone facing allegations of misc misconduct. Now many of them have been cleared but what were hearing from some of them is that they just dont know what to do. The students are running the schools. That theyre afraid to discipline the students for fear of getting in trouble. Prince georges County School says theyre will will be mandatory training this summer for principles and supervisors about reporting misconduct. Now, that substitute teacher former dc Police Officer whos been on leave since january for allegedly hitting a student says shes been cleared but not sure shes going back to the classroom. This is so wrong. You just take the kids word and you treat us like were criminals. I was cleared of all charges. I was guilty first. Something should be done. Reporter in a statement to fox5 news the School System says this. Theres an obvious need to provide more clarity to staff in reporting misconduct allegations and to offer training on classroom management, structure and positive student behavior strategies. That will be our focus over the next few months. Now again you guys mentioned that this all stems from that terrible case over judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School in glenn arden in Prince Georges county where you had this teachers aid Volunteering School sexually abusing kids at school. Well there was this task force Student Safety Task force cr created to clamp down on that. Again youre hearing that the teachers saying now theyre being accused of stuff they didnt do, and when their ultimately cleared wondering whether they want to come back into the classroom. Guys. Aside from that 270 southbound really heavy volume from urbana down to the beltway theres a new crash just south of the icc as you make your way out in r rockville as well in the mix. From urbana on down about a 35 minute delay. Medical emergency moved to the shoulder outer loop at New Hampshire avenue. 20 minute delay Holding Strong just before 95 to Georgia Avenue. And then bw parkway southbound heavier traffic heading down toward the capitol beltway. Frederick Douglas Bridge theres disable vehicle blocking the right lane. Really heavy traffic spilling on 295 northbound also the 11th vet bridge backing up with a lot of bail out traffic vokes extending their travel on 29595 cross over the 11th Street Bridge rather than the Douglas Bridge. Again a lot of backed up traffic because of that on both of those routes. Chain bridge dealing with a crash between glebe road and clara barton causing some delays as well. And then also keep in mine gw parkway northbound really heavy toward the beltway southbound heavy from 123 to the key bridge and northbound 95 crashes cleared.
