The crash happened yesterday morning in Baltimore County the 64yearold driver was seriously injured in that crash. The car took out an entire gas pump. Then landed on its hood. Fortunately the safety valves on the pump kicked in and an explosion. Police are still investigating how that driver lost control. They say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Three teenagers facing charges after police say they vandalized dozens of cars yesterday in gaithersburg. Theyre accused of kicking out windshields and jumping up and down on the roofs three dozen vehicles. Police say the destruction was some of the worst they have ever seen. One of the damage cars was covered in pollen and an officer found an important clue in that pollen that helped id1 of the suspects. Area in this region, i know personally i was reporting on this more than a decade ago. Is the problem Getting Better . Is it get getting worse . Whereo were we stand. I think one of things we see we had very big Enforcement Effort back about tepp years ago as was quite dormant but obviously was more quiet and we also see politically in Central America there was more cooperation between the government and a truce between the gangs, and that since has been the governments down in Central America have taken more hard line that put more pressure on the american affiliates of the gang of the increased activity and whats most alarming to myself and when i talked to my counterparts in the region and across the United States its the number of homicides were seeing and the brutal nature in which theyre being committed. Unfortunate until includes in Montgomery County where you are. You talked about the government obviously we have heard from this administration more recently. New administration, learning now more in detail about some of these crimes, some of these brutal homicides happening in the backyar of the white house search until Montgomery County and Northern Virginia. What the government is doing right now helping or hurting the situation . Well, i think the in two different ways. Ill expand upon that, we have been working with the federal government we worked with our federal partners in federal Law Enforcement agencies such a as dea and hsi from the department of Homeland Security and u. S. Attorneys office in trying to bring broader cases against these gangs where we can reach across state lines to go and attack not only the individual members but the organization as well. Whats not always helpful some of the rhetoric thats coming out thats also alien 88ing the very population in which were trying to serve that is also the population that ms13 is preying on mostly. Can you explain a little bit more about that, because the question obviously has come up about those who were in the coucu illegally and whether or not they are more victim, more perpetrator, more gang member . What is the break down as far as what you see . By far we see that the, you know, immigrant population is more likely to be a victim of a crime than they are to be an illegal the gang is also using that base from where they come from in Central America to also target that. We see a lot of extortion in mom and pop businesses. Were starting to see that expand through extortion some people we have some evidence that the extortions extending to pockets of immigrant communities where people are living in certain apartment complex where theyre being asked to pay an additional rent if you would to the gang for socalled protection. Captain, youre the man. You are the guy that is in charge of investigating this in Montgomery County. The special investigations division. What do you need ideally from the federal government to help combat this problem in Montgomery County . What would work best based on the years of knowledge that you have . I appreciate you calling me the man. Its the detective that is work for me the ground doing the hard work. Again we work with our federal partners and we work very well with them. I think we need both the federal government in terms of getting broader intelligence. So that we can get that from other cities and see what else is going on in other place where is ms is active, you know, we also are seeing ms gang members that are very transient. Were starting to see gang members as you may have known the homicides committed here fled to texas and meanwhile weve had gang members who have committed homicides in new england who have traveled to the Montgomery County region or the Northern Virginia region who are wanted here. So that were starting to see a lot more transient nature among the gangs its a lot more fluid. So we need to have the federal government involved to make that coordination so that we can be better prepared and better organized to attack this holistic klee. Captain i know we can talk about this for much lengthy period of time. The fear you have expressed in the past when it comes to the silence how much of a problem could that be if people are in fear of reporting crime ifs these are people perhaps their immigration status in itself is questioned . I know weve always taken the stand here in Montgomery County we dont care about peoples status particularly victims of crime. We want anybody to come forward who is a victim of crime. I think if someone is also in fear potentially being deported even if thats their perception thats not helping local Law Enforcement because we really rely on the community both for their tips and those are the people were serving. P allison the perfect questio. Heres the reality. We have figured out pre k3 and four and the mayor was really excited to support that when she was on the council and work really hard to get it done. And now we realize we have a zero to three challenge. Parents across the city are working incredibly hard to find row sources for the young to fine the right child care. You just got back to work. Which is harder than we think. Yes it is especially hard if you dont have good quality child care we wanted to make sure babies were easily and quickly access the child care opportunities that exist across the city. And really search to is he what was available in their own communities. Right. Good we also did something really important with this budget that the mayor is working to get passed through the council. We added 15 mel i dont know dollars to create 1300 new hi highquality child care slots across the city number one. Number two but in conditional resources to help train 300 new pre cidars across the city. That we know will make a huge difference ensure our young people have access to the best possible child care that can exist in our city. So by five, meaning literally by the age of five by the time they hit kindergarten rushed real head start. Real head start and be ready to be in school and we have a great infrastructure so far with our dc public and Charter Schools and now we need a better infrastructure for zero to three. Thats what were working on. You go to the the centerpiece. Thats centerpiece it. Starts with maternal care. Thats right. Goes all the way up you said till three or really five. 35 by five. What about the older parents or maybe somebody who needs help for the older child . Is there information on there. There is some but we have tons of resources throughout as well throughout district government. You can go to the Human Services website to identify other students as well as state superintendent for education to get Additional Resources for older kids.
