Ig of course it was president e ittrumps first address tot addt Congress Last night. Ast night. So lets take a closer look at that. President trump a softer tono in the hour long speech some soe moment of his young presidencydy as president called for unity u among congress. My administration wants toant work with members of both parties to make child care accessible and affordable, to to help ensure new parents that tha they have paid family leave. Ve [ applause ] to invest in Womens Health ton promote clean air and cleann water and to rebuild our military and our infrastructuree [ applause ]ause the joining us now with wh reaction senator Chris Van Hollen of maryland. Ar i know it was late night for yoy all your colleagues on the hillh couple things we want to talk. To one is tone and the other isers message. Lets start witness tone. W what did you feel . Wh did look what im learning nowin with this president you never nr know which personality is goings to show up. Is it the tweet that sent out o that, you know, is very divisive or is it this different tone . N mostly weve seen divisive president. The tone was different here. I obviously a little bit. E b. Weve got to start watching actions. Not words. T wds just the other day attorney general reversed course in an ia effort to try to make sure thatt the voters in texas had the the right to vote and access to the voting but you didnt hearidt anything about that last night g but thats what theyre doing. On the tone itself before we ge to the messages you want to tall about. Did it surprise you at ought aot last night this was a different sounding president from whatsid weve heard in the last month . I think the question many off us had going in is the president going to simply read the scriptp the teleprompter somebody wroteo for him, or is he going tooing adlib . And clearly last nightag he read the script that somebodb gave for him. Him. It was designed to, you know, sound a little calmer. Right. Ht. But what things sound likeund and what they are in reality isy going to be a big question. Next question, then, if f people from absorbed this. Hi it sounded more president ialsidt last night the tone was there a friendly eighty three more ireeo think universal type of tone but do you take that and feel liketh we might see more of tathat or o this an out liar last night and now we really are going to getot back to what weve seen in theet last month. Last month. What can the american peoplep believe . . We dont know. Kno weve got to watch the actions. T you played good clip there about more actos affordable child care. President hasnt done a thing in tthe first week ds to put forwa plan on affordable child care. C many of suss put forward plans. S you amongsted the infrastructure. Modernizing our infrastructure. Thats not what hes focused on inour now. Righint now heshat he ocused oghnocus o destroying the Affordable Caredl act. That that got a big applause apa line in republicans. Ca hes had very divisive immigration policies. Olicie before the speech some peopleeol comprehensive immigration reforf policy. Then comes the speech. Speec nothing about that. So its very chaotic right now. W you dont know what youre goine to get in terms of words. Wds thats why im going to be veryr focused on deeds. Lets talk about the democrats reaction last night. Ht there were moments where thehe t room was clearly divided. Divid you had a standing ovation onngo the republican side folks f sitting on the democratic side. Then there came that moment momt where there was a tribute to tht Fallen Navy Seal and now the Democratic Party is catching aaa lot of heat for some members not standing when he was beingei honored. D so let me ask you about that. T what is the American Public to make of the optics of that . Well, i didnt see all my colleagues. Coll i saw democrats standing atin a least most democrats standing tg honor the fallen soldier just aa we stood to honor the individuaa victims that the president pre but and we all were together in supporting our troops and,opa you know, supporting our our veterans. Rans. I thought there was a lot oferso unity there, but some where thet president said things where it w was clear that hes doing veryer different things, and, you know, he comes out and he, you know, says that we have a falling g economy and things are crashinga all around and he takes credit i for the sun coming up, right . It hes been there for 40 days. 0 d. The reality is that he inherited an an economy that was in prette good shape. The realitygo is over r throughout the country crime hah been down. Dn. Violent crime has been down. Own. So, upping, he tries to paint this very dark portrait off america todays and he comes ii and says in 40 days he started t to reverse that. Tha thats just not reality. But its not reality. sot r so lets focus on reality. Reaty thats why im really focused oo what hes going to do. You remain very critical anda a critic after this speech last night. Nigh is that what im hearing, senator . Nar . I would look forward too having the president join us inn the Infrastructure Modernization plan. An we put plan on the table. The te he talk about that during thet i campaign. He talked about it last night. T why not start with that . Whyhaw not start with something thathit brings people together, good for jobs, and something we need in 21st century. C thats not what hes doing every day. When we look at some of the well vol to wrapwe t lhp unfortunate whole we look ate wl some of the applause points whee it comes to infrastructure whenc it comes to the Affordable Careo act and immigrationrd. Ablegratio was there anything that came out of the this last night where yoy feel like, yes, both sides can c work forward on any of these t issues . Did anything stand outt i mean, i mentioned a couplee already. Aly. Modernizing our infrastructure. More affordable child care. Car. He mentioned reducing the cost prescription drugs. Gs. He said that during t some of the big folks from farma at the white house and backedtea off. Now hes saying it again. Again we have a plan. Plan. Actually democrats introduced aa plan just yesterday to help reduce the cost of prescription drugs. Dr join us. Joins. Look, all im saying is that he said some things last night h started with message againsta mate with the synagogues. That was encouraging. The tone was better. Etter. We get a lot of tweets thatt create more division. N weve seen a lot of ugliness ins this campaign. Paign. Im glad that he started theedhe speech as did he. Absolutely. But again, lets see what heses going to be doing. Doi im very much now in the mode om youve got sort of multiple personalities. You never know which trump ismpi going to show up. U so we really got to focus on the deeds, and i would really like k to see us move forward onorward lowering the cost oftf prescription drugs, modernizing infrastructure, affordable ch thats not in any of his plansia hes. to congress. Congrs. What hes talked about so far sa is, again, getting rid of the oe Affordable Care act and putare forward a budget that calls forf dramatic increases in militaryay spending by dramatically cuttiny our investment in education, ini medical research, in modernizing our infrastructure. So, you know, you can have a haa speech that says a lot of goodfo things that people like, letsit see what they do. The tone itself is not ton selling it. Unfortunately we have to leave it there. We would love toe c they we nu conversation next time. Tion nt i absolutely. Thanks senator for joiningseo us. Send it over to tucker right now with a quick check of theck ofhe forecast. Ca thanks, steve. Anks, ve lets get right it to. Ht ito. 60 degrees early. D clouds out there. Outhere. Rig [ applause ] five guests including the widowd of Late Supreme Court justiceus Antonin Scalia there in the red and the navy seal killed in yemen last month. Mth lets get closer look at thet president s address from what he softer tone from the commander in chief. Join us no frofromm capitol hillol h democratic congressman johnessmh delaney who representsrents marylands sixth district. I will note that we did invitice numerous members of gop party to join us this morning members off congress. Ngre they all declined but we will talk with a gop strategist atisa 9 00. 9 00. Congressman delaney, good to seo you this morning. Thanks for joining us. Ks for thank you, steve. Joiniou, first of all a lot made about the tone of the speech last o night. What did you feel being in the chamber last night . It was clear al moref th feee dignified speech than weve w heard from the president. Dent certainly when compared to his o inauguration speech, and the spd tone was obviously differentiffe than some of the tweets weve been hearing from him lately any some of the other things thatts are coming out of the white whi house. So give him credit for giving ag speech that was more dignified in tone and more measured in his delivery. Wta colleagues last hour fromhour fm maryland senator chris vanhris n hollen and he seemed to echo ech that thought as far as the tonee but he said look the proof willl be in the pudding essentially and well see what the message a and the actions down the road. What do you feel needs to come m from this speech now to continuu to move forward in i guess a more amicable way when were w looking at addressing both sidee of the aisle . So going with the spirit thai the president laid out last las night to Work Together, i thinki well Work Together on pursuingr opportunities and overcomingiesv challenges for the country wehey need to do two thing. One, we need to accuratelyccur describe the problem. Problem i think one of things president e said yesterday which i agree agr with which is the problems bl issues the country faces are solvable but you wont be able l to fix them or solve thosehose problems unless you accurately t describe the problem. Roblem. I think one of the things i tng didnt like about thet the president s speech last night kind of he describes the problem up correctly in my judgment. Gmt i mean protection i is not really the answer to some of tht Economic Issues were dealing di with which are driven by largerr ru globalization and technicalecal innovation. On i think his framing of the issue we had with immigration is alsoo incorrect. Co casting immigrants is kind ofkio this almost like, you know, large kind of gang controlledtre population in our country. I dont think thats accurate. I think we need nor policy details. Il ive been big proponent of large infrastructure invest many. Id love to hear his details dai what he plans to do. O do. He wants to improve health carec i think the right way to doingod that is looking at the the Affordable Care act objectivelyi look at whats working andng a whats not working, and then t come up with policy solutions around the problems without who throwing out the things that are bad. So this notion its collapsingln upon itself is again not true. R. I think we need to root roo ourselves in accurate accat descriptions of the problems ana the opportunities and then once we agree on the facts, i thinkhk the policy solution becomes somewhat selfevident and we can work on them together. The so, you know, the high marks ofr the president s speech the and his delivery, and his out o reach towards bipartisan ship. But i think in terms of lowf l marks i dont think he wasdot accurately describing some of the challenges the country has h in kind of a fair and balanced way. And until we do, were not goini to be able to move forward onoro some of these solutions. Olutions im trying to get little dig deeper here into the workings of the Democratic Party as of march theirs of first, 20, sphenion get what youre sayingr about the out reach being theree but it seems like the details di that seem to be the biggest bige issue. If the president and the administration gives morestraiv details on things, might we seee more bipartisan ship . Is that kind of the vein of theofhe frustration hearing the broad to strokes now and not the details . Yeah. I think there hasnt been a lot of bipartisae hasnn ship since come into office. Coe. He didnt put any democrats ints his cabinet which is unusual. There hasnt been any out reacht the best i can tell to anyo any members of the Democratic Partyr s e early. So, you know, he has an opportunity to change that. Tong but details do matter on thesene things when you talk about abo fixing health care, you know,no whatre how does that how do they the compare to where we are with th Affordable Care act . When you talk about large scaleweare ut s infrastructure plan. Trn. What do you mean by that . Is it all tack credits to encouragera Public Private partnershipstnshs which im totally supportive of. But those structures can maybe handle 10 of the innfrastructur needs we have in this country. So its things like that. Tt. He talks about 1 trilliondollal infrastructure spend talks about cutting taxes. Tting. He talks about increasingre defense spending. Ndin how does the math work aroundron those things as it relates toest our fiscal conditions . He talkl about how president obamantbama increased the debt during his presidency which is true, but these type of proposals until ww see the details will cause thelt debt to even grow faster. As so i think the details do mattee on some of these things, and i a think were all hopeful that wew get some specific plans and wee can start working on them together. I think what he should do,toat d theres a lot of bipartisan proposals already in theals congress with details flush outs those would be great places forr him to start on some of thesefhe ideas. S. Congressman, let me ask yousy and you know that sinking in bub he also talk about, you know arc lot of people watching bodyody actions, posturing that type ofe thing. Yes. One of the things and this is on both sides one of the things thins one s got hammered for wii the ovation for the fallen navyn seal some saying some democratsd were not standing. Were n you could see it in the videos. V whats your take on that . Is ts that something that should not happen . Should that be a showing of Mutual Respect inesct that case for that fallen seal. Absolutely. I stood up during those momentsn i mean there were several seval moments. I mean whether someone is someos standing or just clapping if ini their seat, you know, i think, i you know, to your point i think one of the better parts of there speech was when he told thosehoe personal stories. Tori its very powerful to tell the story of america through theou t eyes of americans and by tellini their stories. Ries. Its kind of like testimony intn some ways. I thought that was kind of theit high point of the speech. H. Owens family obviously was veryr big moment of the speech and iea think the president did a nicede job on that. Talking about the crowley crowly situation and howhe basically created a business too help cure the issue that his dad was facing those were veryer ver powerful moments. Ents. My sense was most democrats werr completely supportive of thatfha and clapping their hands and standing. Maybe not standing the whole wle time, et cetera, but i think i dont think there was any was notion of democrats not beingrab supportive of those things. S. Congressman, we alwaysays appreciate your time. Prec thanks so much for joining us. Ij thank you very much, steve. It was a long night. Ea bloom last year they had to move it i up. Last year it was march 25th. But in 2015, it was april 10th. D jack joins us live in thelin studio with more this morning. Good to see you once again. Ain break down own like a spy novel. Lika sp exactly. It does. It does. Its a its kind of morbid subject but its aid subt hopeful subject because finallyy some progress its my job toob bring closure to the family fam thats what im trying to do. T r orgeat lot of crank calls ink ln this type of role. R ive done this sort of stufft ou before. Just part of the job, but i here was approached by a guy why styles himself as former u. S. Intel officer. I quizzed him i think hesink credible. You never know motive of people. Of ppl but what he said is basicallyal this. This that seth discovered that thetht russians had been hacking andaca therefore the russian governmenn did away with seth. Now, one of the things that juss like you, i have to judge t j credibility of people telling ml these thing. Hi. The timeline which seemed tomed match seth was killed in july. The story about russia hackingac into the dnc and possibly otherr places happened in august. Ugus the timeline matches. Why are you so committed tocd this, jack . My mother used to talk to me about safety when i moved to d. C. And those days dc i thinkci had almost 2500 murder as year. I pictured my mother gettingtt that call that mary rich got that morning. Ning just a cold call. Cold ll. Picture yourself 6am you haveamh children. Your son is dead. And just think about how that hits you. I couldnt get a call my dog iss dead. Ad right. W were still working on other o leads. Theres a lot going on. O but i mccall wonders they can shineans the bright spotlight of thef T International media and bringndb things out of the wood work. W like i said, its the media that kell really solve this, not me,m not the police, not the fbi nott anybody its the powerfulowerfu spotlight that can bringan b information to us. Whats the end game though, t jack . Aside from solving one so young mans murder, proving thee russia had something to do withh it, what does that prove . I try to stay out of geof geo politic. Politi my job simply to help the familm to represent the family, to gett them what they want which isich closure. Ow in it is cloudy out twahere. The. Look at fredericksburg, 64 degrees. D 64 in leonardtown and a lot off moisture, a lot of heat, a lotot of possible energy here for ouro thunderstorm activity to feastyo off of when it arrives a little later today. Es history of producing hail and damaging winds and all of that t marching towards us late thise t morning and during the earlyd dt afternoon hours. Well likely have a period ofa i thunderstorms around here h between about 1 00 and0 4 00 oclock this afternoon. Hisn the boxes you see those are tornado watches severe sever thunderstorm watch boxes out too our west. So we really got to keep close o eye on the forecast primarily pa concerned about gusty winds. Although cant rule out thet rl possibility of some hail andhail even isolated tornado cant rull that out either as we get intoe so there you go. Severe setup likely around hereh in fact enhanced risk now putut out by the under end hasnted h risk for afternoon hours. There we are at 1 00 oclock. 00c notice that line of thunderstort right along this line we could d have winds gusting to 50 plus 5 Miles Per Hour and well see ife we dont get severe thunderstorr developing. There we are at 3 00 oclock. Wea heres the good news. N it will be a quick moving bandgn of thunderstorms and although we wont be sunny to sent day thehe worst of the weather should betr through the area by three, sea e 4 00 oclock in the afternoonno and then for the evening rush hour tonight things will be a tl little bit quieter. It quieter maybe a second the actual act front doesnt get in here untilt later this evening may be a mayb secondary line of showers andow storms that develop during theer evening hours well clear it ouo much cooler by tomorrow. In fact cool enough by friday wa could have few snow showersew ss across parts of the area with aa little clipper system that willa be dipping down into the area. Nn so lots to talk about.
