Ow off very long history of workor hearing in the dc area and tc ad around the world to be honestbeh dealing with trying to find helh lets just try to get some ants to some of the questions a lot e of people have. Keep it clear, lear this impacts illegal immigrants. How many people might thatig t affect in the d. C. Area . A i mean really were talking g about nearly almost 80 to 100,000 people that may beay b affected in the metropolitanpotn region and were talking aboutka areas as far north as baltimorei and as far south as, you know, and west as Loudoun County i mean really talking about newew regulations basically say thatt everybody is a priority. Previously with the obamae oma administration there was a focuw on enforcing immigration law,tiw and making sure that people with significant criminal backgroundo are deported. So the majority of the enforcement was dedicated dic towards that segment of thef t documented population. Now basically immigrationigti enforcement officers have kind k of Carte Blanche to walk aroundd parking lots and Grocery Storese to walk around the streets and d just because somebody looks undocumented ergo might look l latino its enough to questionne them and start the dete so just to be clear on this. The process of startinging deportation process for somebodd with violent history or a proven violent path thats nothing w knew. Absolutely. Thats nothing new. Tha ishe concern right now that as far as criminal background, what type of realm are talking about what couldha constitute a criminal background . Now whats happening with this Additional Guidance is a lot more did you correction isot given to the officers. Ffics. Previously the obamaba administration had put ann emphasis on discretion by partiy of the judges to take into te consideration the many factorato that is go into a particularn case. How many years have people beene living here . Have they beenyee living legally . Have they beenb obeying the law and paying payg taxes, do they have u. S. Citizens kids . Theres a lot a more discretion on the officerss themselves and if they suspectus that somebody is undocumentedocm they can start the detention process and now with the new guidance, theres more leeway la for expedited removal beforeef even going into court and beforf even going through a judge. That was the case in thet wai past, right . If somebody wasw picked up undocumented, theyent, would have essentially their dae in court . Ir c exactly right. Xact they would have an opportunityli for due process and see whateeha their opportunities for relief existed. Now a days, that new guidance ga document that came out over the weekend stipulate that is therel is a lotat more leeway on lway expedited removal so now if somebody is has been in then te country for less than two years, regardless of their situation regardless of the fact that thea may be fleeing violence from th particular countries and we know the majority of those people ara Central Americans that are thate fleeing intense violence fromine their countries theyll be immediately deportednsco wunitht even seeing a judge. G a dge so what is the process thenct for folks who want to changehane their status from being undocument the to becoming abeca u. S. Citizen . How long doesg that take. How many people are trying toe t through that process here in hei maryland. Its very complicated process, but thet cs ommunity itself has been trying to adjusj their status for many years. Yrs thats the biggest problem thatm we have. We have a broken immigrationigti system that does not allow people an opportunity to really look thoroughly into their casec and seek relief. This has been obstacle and an a issue for immigration attorneyse for decades already, and theyv been pleaing for additionalnal support more immigration judges, more opportunities to reallyoeal look at the asylum process and look at a more feesable way to y really adjudicate cases andas ad figure out really the figureg out these individual cases. Es right now, its the contrary. Tr right now its deport first andt figure thing out later. L. In a nutshell how long wouldu the process take in years, iea months, whatever it would be . It takes years in many casess to successfully argue in front of a judge. The cases that have to do withit positive asylum case. And this unfortunately the this new guidance really takes s even that opportunity for judges to thor role look at cases. R roc at what point if somebodyasay point in that process are they essentially safe to stay forlly lack of a better term as far ass what this new guidance wouldould show . . Only up until the judgey unt eventually decides. Even in that interim perioderiod while their case is being decided theres subject tores s deportation if they commit somet sort of violation, if theyrere picked up for multiple dismembee mean nor as felony theyrehey immediately deported. Deed. Even as theyre going throughhru the process. So to say that people are safe, um, just because theyre going i through the court system andem trying to hear their case isnt necessarily true. Rue. There are those who will sayw if theyre picked up for felonyy or violation of a criminal act t thats one thing. s one t i get it. I get i but now were hearing things as far as traffic violations. True. As far as illegal act of simply, you know, going hearing not showing up for court, that,t type of thing. Ng so what is it now i guess thats different as far as that . The communities living in fear righg now that its going get ang g traffic stop its not going to,g you know, people are not going t to driveny going to go to school . Ch much beyond that. Uch beyona i mean were talking about, abo again, a situation where immigration Custom Enforcement officers could prowl across thet streets and could go and this happened in fact last weekend even before these thishis guidance came out we saw in in baltimore two individuals thatdi were picked up by ice just j coming out of a walgreens. Walee simply walking to their car. C they were coming out of the Grocery Store buying some makeup i believe for for one of thee spouses of one of thee t individuals, and were pick up bi ice just simply because they looked latino and now theyre isnt expedited beau deportation processes even though they haveh zero criminal background. One of them is a barber that isi the barber of the local city cy council member. M another individual actually has a business, constructiononct business revitalizing homes in baltimore. Im so we have, again, people withet significant backgrounds in their home jurisdictions people whoe have contributed significantly to the economy and are being ari deported simply because they look like theyre undocumented. N george were running out of time. Me well talk to you again soon aso we learn more and more aboutor a whats happening with theningite guidance. Thank you. Iehe m Trump Administration rolling rog back federal guidelines that t called for schools to allow a transgender students to use the bathroom they identify with. It the white house says its nou up to the feds to decide andecea action gives states and localndl School Districts the power too make policy on their own. 15 states have passed laws to protect transgender students. Administration over the federal guideline and we know here inwe our area, the issue was very contentious especially in virginia where there were heatea meeting in Fairfax County lastyl year. Hundreds of parents spoke outpot against allowing transgenderrans students to use the bathroom ofo their choice. Ho this morning bob barnard getting a first whove hand account. Ovc hes live in Fairfax County wity a family directly impacted byacb this new action. Io bob . Bo reporter hey, steve and, sta allison. Al good morning to you. Yes, here ingo fairfodax county, School District is fairlyy progressive and it kind ofki handles these things on a caseas by case basis. Awaiting for the courts to actually hash things out here in the commonwealth of virginia ini fact. Ct joining us is jenn and amandaa brewer. Ewer jenn is a 13yearold eighth grader. Her mother amanda joining us as we. L. Jenn, take us fir of all, about this whole transgendernsnd bathroom issue, what is your practical situation at school ao right now . It sounds prettynd e good. My practical situation is, gender dress rooms i actually use the gender neutral restroom which is a staff bathroom i havv oh get a key for it. Reporter but theyrey available and your mom was mas saying theyre actually four ofr these in your school. Soo yeah, there are four of themf reporter so practicallyract speaking right now, things ares good for you . For y . Yes. Es reporter amanda, yourr reaction to this change by the Trump Administration on thishi order from the former president t obama . Obam um, for us being a militaryly family, we have were lucky c to be stationed here. Ere. Jenn has protections from her county and the school board. Our issue if we move to anotherh state she very well may no longer have the same protections that we have here because becau without the backing of thefhe federal government, youre leftl to what each state and eachndac county has made a decision on. Reporter and explain toxp our viewers amanda its more is than just bathrooms, right . . Yes. Reporter you hear aboutrbo baro how complicated is that. It. But it is. T it it goes beyond bathrooms. Ooms it goes to everything from using jenns name and her pronounce po and if you cant use a personso name or their pronouns youre dehumanizing the person. Er reporter and jenn you were w at a school last year which wasi more difficult. You changed schools. Oo. How is it for you right now in your school, because i think thi most people ive got aot a 13yearold daughter, you think eh, you know, everything goesry for kids. Ds there are families with twoith dads, two moms. Uruguay, youre bisexual. Ua your trance. How is it practically speaking for you amongst your peers and y teachers at school . Rsschoo my school is pretty accepting because we have a decent size Lgbt Community and most peopleto accept it and if they donty don accept it the person who doesnt accept it isnt really like hung out with much. H m reporter but it was more was difficult for you last year . St . Can you kind of elaborate ara little bit how that was . W i went to a school where you counselor about my pronounce hee called my mom, and asked if ite was acceptable for him to use them. Them. Reporter and . And teachers stopped me inedm the hallway and like asked for my name on like passes and suchs reporter kind ofind questioned who you were. Er yeah. Reporter a pan darks you dky said even in the cafeteria, jenj would get stopped and said, this doesnt the pass doesnt sayt jenn so im not serving you lunch kind of thing and you decided more passes in the hallway,ss if you have to go from one clasa to another the kids have to carry a pass, and that pass, um, most of the time have your legag name and some counties becauseib of the protections they can use they can use their name n that they go by versus the namen they were born with and the the school we were at would not doo that. That. Reporter gotcha. Ga its kind of case by case schooh by school basis. Yes. Reporter its not all rosy r because it is now for you at y a this school. L. Jenn, for those who are watching, whats your been likee you came out couple of yearsfea ago. Yeah. Reporter i mean, people i mp might find this fascinatinging whats it been like for you . Fo . Its been it was pretty rocky at the start like justus everything all at once. But since ive like done d everything in like gotten newte friends that accept me more, me, ive kind of moved on and now things are a lot better. Ette reporter youre in a goodood place . Yeah. Reporter the second of six kids. Good place for the family asce well and youve been very fve r accepting all along amanda youmd and your husband . Yes. When we found out, we knewew instantly that this was a live v choice which made it not a n choice for us, it was what are e we going to do to help our kid survive . And we did everythingy we can in our power to help herh reporter thats awesome. Awe great to hear that. Hr that. Thank you for sharing yoursharin story. Y jenn an amanda brewer. A b one of the things amanda saysays really this affects young peoplg but its really it seems in lotl of ways guys its the older thed people, us adults who have the v tougher time that for the most part the kids are cool with wit everything. Everything. Its just that we adults kind od have to get on board. Depending how you feel abouto things. Ings bob, you know as a parent, um, that is that is the case. That is a look at traffic. 8 18. Steve, back to you caitlin caitn thanks very. An lets continue with the metront theme right now. Ththe ri yesterday we spoke with metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld we talked about safetrack thesae likelihood of high fares and how he also is impair with the process of getting our metro system up to snuff. Em up to snuf we encouraged our fox5 viewers and riders to submit tsu questions for wall wiedefeld and passed along a few your questions to the Transit Agency and hertoe are t sheome of metro answer. Er. First up a question came in from brian newton brian wrote io would love to know why you plann to raise fares and cut serviceei bus or rail for customers likerk myself who cant get to work onn time now because of safetracket and already late buses i thougho metro was created to save people from getting cars yet im beingm force to do get one now becauseb i want to keep my employment. Lo heres what metro had to say iny response to that. O t we know that safetrack has beenb hardship for everyone in theorry region including many people whw dont ride metro. But it is hardest on those who e depend on metro and who may notn have other options to get to work. However, your safety has to take priority over every other o consideration. Cons safetrack is about getting metro to a safe and reliable state byb the end of june. We are compressing three yearsps worth of work into thert accelerated program which haschs metro employees and contractorsr working literally around the clock to get the job done with t as little disruption as we can. Obviously with only two tracksra to work with, any project ofrojo this nature is going to be the good news is safetrack willl conclude in june after that wehw will shift to regular routine of preventive maintenance soenan s Emergency Program like safetraca is not needed again. So just preaching patience patie there. Next up a question from betsy b braver man she asked please n ps the public on what is known as the number eight key which metrm bus drivers are told to presso p when passengers dont have monen or refuse to pay. Is this money coming out of myf state taxes or are these peoplee riding for free . So betsy heres your answer. Our anr. Metro Bus Operators are not Police Officers and cannot and should not put themselves in an altercation with a passenger who refuses to pay his or her fare. In fact more than 60 of all bus operator assaults are the result of a fair dispute. Iste no one should be assaulted fored simply doing their job. To to track fair evasion and to provide data so that mtpd can c deploy fair enforcement metro Bus Operators have aave button to log any occurrencerenc where a passenger did not pay. They did not answer the questioo where is the money coming fromin but that is your answer as farr as safety. As logging how often it does hoi happen. Rigight. Then they can calculate theeu cost. Cost. Betsy also had another oneno for metro ive noticed dimmerme lighting at Union Station. Ta is this an evident to save money or something gels on that oneele metro says, most of last weekee metro Power Department stafftm worked to rewire six of theix oe pylon lights on the platform ats Union Station on for an led lil fixture test. As a result of that work,k, several pylons were dark. Ns wer as of today, pylon lights are back on and they are are operational. Atiol. Finally, this from a viewer r named michael jennings. En he wrote, metro has a spikingkig crime rate and sparse funds yet the Transit Police who have over 500 officers are working tenhour shifts. Sft having done schedules forles for police, that is the most personnel consuming schedule. Sd if they went to 12hour shiftshi they would effectively double manpower with no increase i funds. So michael heres your answer. Ns crime on metro is low and getting lower. Ger in fact, metros part one crimei was down fourpoint 7 in 20166 compared to 2015, however, metro Transit Police are always are looking for ways to improve. Strategies to drive crime downie even further. The Current Police Union Contract which was signed in 2010 andre whi runs through sepb of this year does not allow for 12hour shifts but according tot the chief, this is a subject that he be discussing duringsing upcoming contract talks. Al we want to thank you forthanf taking the time to submit your questions and we want to thankak metro of course for addressingdn your questions. For more information log on tosf thore fmaox5 d. C. Facebook pager look up up on twitter at fox5x5 d. C. We appreciate the feedback andek your questions well try to getg them answered as often as wefte can. Noon thenty d aaygend ma includes the development of wess barred Shopping Center inte bethesda. Da. Now its a hot button issue iss because there may be a historic graveyard buried be 19 the current parking lost joining usj now withoini more is run right t Montgomery County planningnnin director. Good morning and thanks for joining usning a. Good morning. Glad to be here. O ere. So theres a series of meetings today. Today. Am i correct . Because thishi issue isnt on the morningni meeting agenda. Well, the Planning Board does meet every thursday, all day,lly and we have some other topics coming up in the morning andning then well be talking about wess barred in the afternoon. Soak. Oak. What is on the agenda before wee dig into some of what specifically, where are wew in this fight to look forook f potential sakeret land here in n bethesda . Well, we are very very interested in working with the community to look at the potential that there is historic africanamerican cemetery in the west bard area. Aa. Weve been working for a coupleu of years now, and did a new a n master plan for the west bard br area and actually this cemeteryr will potential cemetery was identified by our staff at thatt time. Ti we contacted the nearbyy macedonia baptist church, andrca other members of the community, to talk about the fact thatha there may be a cemetery in thisi location. We talked with the propertypert owner who was looking to redevelop certain portions of o the area, and we have included within the master plan a lot off information about not only the potential cemetery historic river roader africanamerican community. Now the master plan is finisheds it was approved by the countyy council last year and we are now dealing with a regulatory application to actually do somee redevelopment and changes that will, um, affect potentially the area near the cemetery. The players yers however because i i wasas going to say because theause the cemetery is such a sensitiveve topic weve actually hatched out, weve excluded that areat a from the review thats going too go on this afternoon. Okay. Were going to be looking at othengr parts to of the land as particular parcel of land willdl be coming forward at a future at date. It is very fascinating were talking about three thr players here talking about thebt community. Uny. Looking at the macedonia baptisp church. A lot of people would bed along river road wasth once a thriving africanamericaname community. Theres very little evidencee ee there. Theres a wholefoods now therehe for example. Le so let me ask you this. T whats next . If there aref the graves found there, what might happen . Well, if after the t archeological investigationtigan there is any evidence of burial shafts or human remains, then te there are a whole bunch of state laws in the state of marylandarn that kick in about how thosese archeological resources are Historic Resources need to be handled. Le and well follow all of those state laws. We are actually planning a parkp right in this area as well that would reclaim the will let wl Branch Stream that had beenee channel arrived into a concreteo ditch and were looking at naturalizing it and there may be an opportunity to include if i there are burr eely parkland to be able to interpret and commemorate. Te first thing we need to do iss get the facts and find out whata is actual film. Ual f were logging at if im notot mistaken its a parking lot nown is that correct . The area that might have the grave sitesve ses underneath . Yes. Okay. That is correct. Okay. And so im just curious. Cus will it be sonar . How did you no know . There will be an diged there at the parking lot or whaa technology will you use . Sure. Sure. Well, the first step is to use whats called ground penetratini radar where radar is run overve the surface of the ground to identify if there are any arease that appear to be burial shafts. We probably will ultimately ende up having to do some very carry full excavation to verify what t may be there. But yeah, we are completelypletl committed t needs to be done to make suree that we are going to adequately identify, delineate and respect the cemetery that may be there. Do you know about how manyutn graves we might be looking atghl here . We really do not know. Now. The history of this cemetery is actually very complex. It was a cemetery that was in tenley town in the district off columbia that was moved in the early 20th century from tenley town to this area, but we realll dont have any records of exactly how many grave sites mai have been moved or even if they actually were moved. Ed so the archeological work is going to be crucial in i understanding whats reallywhatl there. Th i recently visited the african Burial Ground nationalnl memorial in lower manhattan. Anht i dont know if youve beenknowo there or not, but its a african formerly enslaved inlav this country i certainly hopelye the same is true if these graves are found in bethesda. I thank you for leadingfoun thet charge with this. Wit we feel the same way. Fe thank you. El the all right. Thank you. Umhmm that is gwen wrightrih Montgomery County planning plaig director. To my first five out of five of 2017. 2017 awesome. I spoke to danielle kaluuya kalu youre seeing there as well as Allison William the stars in the film the idea hyped the form hih dark at a derr is a black a b mandating a white woman and thet go home to meet their parentsr r everything is not as it seems to be. Be something crazy is happening. Pe jordan peele directed the film who also from key and peel knoww as first comedians elements bute one of the messages behind thein film ive been mentioning this s this week this idea the parents in the movie try to over stateva that theyre not racist. Act theyll say things to daniels obama for a third term. Hird i want to get dannys thoughts o and allisons thoughts on o messages in the film that fm t running scene youre watchingsco right there, how many times did that guy had have to sprint tspi toward daniel kaluuya. Can you talk about thoseutho messages in the film and how this is a horror film also a alo comedy but theres also somelsom really important things imbeddee in here that people can learn and and yeah. H. Interesting. I speak thinking for whiteking e people for their experience ofno watching the movie is like, its informative because a lot of lot people dont know that just by s saying something that you wouldnt say unless you were talking to a black person you br are isolating them or at least giving them some indication ind youre identifying them as adene black person thinking of them differently. Ery. And i dont think thatsi something a lot of people aredo aware of. I generally think roses dad who says i would have voted fored f obama a third time thinks im being cool with i dont knowo what he thinks but im its imi coming from a place trying toryn connect. Coect. I think its miscommunicatioa of intention. Ntenti. Exactly. Ely white individual is basically bc make someone feel welcomed butut how its received is i feel isolated. Ated exactly. Exact its that kind of like e that part youve seen is one of the reasons i had to say yes too this. It was like oh, ive been there so many times and people theyr lovely, really nice people. Icee. Youre like but you feel awkward and youre like, oh, im just j living my life. Ife. Im just living. Iving youre being constantly whatss it like . Lets talk about thisi lets talk about whatst happening in botswana. Otan i dont know. I i just dont know. Thats the way it is. Ayt i [ laughter ] what is happenin botswana . A lot. Im going tboo wickipedia it. Sing into the floor. Were on your face and youre just sitting there eyes wideye d open and the tears are coming cn wnwn. Zy how crazy. One of the most insane shotsh ive ever seen. E moi eve im wondering as an actor, where do you go to get there . How dod you characters in a certainea way. Way. Where dont g [ laughter ] dont freak me oh out. Me oh ut. A dark place. Empathize any situation. We hired georgine in a ande d walter to help care for myor m parents. When they died i couldnt bearl to let them go. That scene when the guy is running towards you, how scmanyo times did they shoot that . He got hurt. Did he real . Eal . He played football like hes a really like good athlete. Lete. Really good actor obviously, bvus too. But he was like it was just s luck that jordan happened to cast someone who actually knowsk how to run. That scene would have been gonen cgi immediately. Te when i got out of the film if was speakiling to a colleague of mine who said somethingd interesting about the idea de difference between similaritiese between comedy and horroror because when i heard jordanrdn peele was making this movie, i e think of key and peel. Andee one of the greatest things evere did the angry translator forto r obama theyre really f two comedians, and so political. Po extremely funny. Re fun my thought process how is hess w going to handle a horror film . . So i sit down with my buddy iti the exact same thing gettinget reaction from an audience like e comedic reaction is the samen thing as a horror reaction. Its an excitement that you feel. Feel. When jordan peele when it hits you. Hits you. You invokes emotion. Laughter, fear. Aughter, fear. Exactly. Theyre very similar. Th when jordan peele has doneeyr e hes taken a film thats whyshy its my first five out of five of 2017 because you are laughinn but youre also terrified but bt youre also wonder wagon will happen next, and when you see the film for a second time, youll understand why thehy t brilliance behind it reallylly works because there are so muchh things. Each watching this trailer righh now knowing i know already knowy whats happening in the filmnin its even better experienceven r because i can pick up on all thp details hes putting clues in ci there little easter eggs for yof as an audience member to try ana figure out.
