Sp those additional officers madeim entry, while the suspect was shooting engaged in another gunn battle with the suspect. Forced him to stop shooting and retreat to the bathroom where we believe he had definitely d hostages. At that time, we were able to safe and rescue dozens and and dozens of people who injured ana not injured and get them out of the club. B things kind of stabilized basedb on statements made by the suspect about expsi possible bomb vests. Omb we kind of secured everything. Called swat, and we did set up for an explosive breach on thehe bathroom wall where we knew we there were approximately 15 people in the opposing bathroomr to where the suspect was with ww his hostages. Based on statements made by the suspect, based on information ww received from the suspect and a from the hostages and peoplee inside, we believed further loss of live was eminent. Mi i made the decision to commenceo the rescue operation and do the explosive breach. H. The explosive breach did not not penetrate the wall completely. E. We used our Armored Vehicle the bear cat Armored Vehicle to vehc punch a hole in that wall deanad feet the wall so theres a hole in the wall about 2 feet off thf ground about two or 3 feet widet we were able to rescue dozens dz and dozens of out of that hole. T hol the suspect came out of that hole himself armed with a handgun and a long gun engaged g in gun battle with officerss where he was ultimately killed. K so at that time. As you heard there are 49 that are deceased. Ease 48 have been identified. Ntif Family Members of about 24 families have been notified. Ifd. We also have brought down 30 victim witness specialists andcd theyll work with the familiesrk to try to get them what they doe knead. Resources are available. Urce other agencies pulled theirencis resources and brought them downd the fbi has brought resources to bear from the miami field fie office, atlanta feel office, the Jacksonville Field Office as ofe well as quantico, virginia the laboratory ascent down shootingn reconstruction any of thes anduc has kind of the nextti task atas hand as of last night within 24i hours all of of the victims were removed from the pulse bar lounge and now were goi processing it with the shootingt Reconstruction Team to get as as much forensic evidence as we w possibly can at that point. Poi the Investigation Continues oveu the night. Theig we probably processed about 100 leads that were worked on byd ob agents and task force officerss combined. In the task force has been up andna running since the beginning of g this and will continue to run an one of the things that all thegt agencies will do bring the the resources to bear. Ida theres we were listening to earlier i now lets get analysis joining us active shooter expert Rick Kirschner long time careere worked with the fbi threatt review unit. Nit. Dod, military long career threat detect much thanks for joiningtg us this morning. This rnin you know theres severalreev aspects here. As one involving this person. Rs and the risk that he posed toset people. People the other thing for the peopletp who were inside that club andthb how you handle being in aei situation like that. N likeha we heard the police chief give v pretty goodie tail how the h Orlando Police departmenteptmen responded to this. Thi you heard that your analysis ofi their response facing thatse fi situation. I think they did remarkable job. Very commendable. In these types of situations sii seconds matter. Literally seconds. Econ and that police chief is makingm a decision that is going to beo immediate and it needs to happen now, because those individualsna are literally being shot at at inside so i think did he verye very good job. Very commendable. Ndable risk a lot save a lot and weot d heard that about that particular Police Officer getting hit infft the helmet. E lmet those individuals are going in. Life a at risk their own lives. L those individuals wanting toalso home. Those Law Enforcement wanting to home at the end of the day. End d but again risk a lot, save lot. Saw 30 were rescued and indeed they had put th on the line Law Enforcement. Ornt what in the world can you do . U this is what you teach acrosschr the country. Thcountry. What in the world can you do iff you find yourself trapped in a a situation like this . The first thing is not to get into that situation of being trapped. Where you have no means out or escape route. Rou like in bathroom. Athroo in a bathroom. In if that is your only means, yesy i understand. Also, i havent heard this yet,s but thinking of the situationtin those individuals. Rhee remember, this is a nightclub. This is 2 00 a. M. This is a party time. Its loud and youre partying, and, you know, your decisionmaking process isonakic probably a little bit skued. Theres probably theyrey t having a good time. So i think that probably has a factor thats made into it but react, escape, survive. And again these are peoplere who are just out having fun. Avin theyre club goers enjoying a en night out. T o not members of military theys oh your advice . Is it run . Get out . Do whatever you can to t escape . Pe absolutely. Absolutely. Your first order of business is a, to reaction. Rea a number of reports were seeinn here these individuals they t froze or they didnt know what to do. To this could happen. Appen. Exactly much its notxa happening. Is this really happening . And those are precious seconds thatt you are losing. React, escape, get out, get out, get out, is your first order of business. Busi and if need be, confront it with an individual that is targeting, survive. Iv the other aspect of this is i this gunman himself. Youve work with all levels ofeo Law Enforcement from local lawel enforcement up to the feds. This is a person who had been on watch lists in the past and thed came off of watch lists in the past. Past could anything have been done to i guess couldnt strain himt ran perhaps im fishing for the words here. Er but to be blunt this is somebody that the feds had their eye onye for some time, held on him, nothing was found s on him. Why does that happen . The local joint terrorismerrm task force are overwhelmed. Rwhed understand that 60 of the prevented terrorist attacks inki this country have come from individuals Family Members orbes coworkers that have reported,o, hey, this individual is unusualu i need to im reporting this. 60 . 60 . The other 38 comes from the lat enforcement intelligentli community. So we need to have these t individuals looked at but againa local fbi they are overwhelmedvw with this type of. O once he was cleared by the fbi he cant be restricted. Thats it. Any way . A we have, n our incredibledibl country, we work in the fourr corners of the document of theof constitution and if hes not toa breaking the law or pre criminal activity anything that is indicative of pre attack operatio go. Before we let you go, weve heard somewhat about the weapons used here. Used here. When i first heard this i this i thought how can one person killl 50 people . What is this weapon that he used . Well its an ar15 stylele weapon. Semi automatic handgun as well. I think what you get that amount of carnage is just due to the individuals and the close proximity. Prox the mass gathering in closen c proximity before they started to disperse will cause that damage. So, um, im unsure of the typeot of ammunition and those detailst which are certain to come out. E or if the gceun was altered t any way or whatever it may be. B certainly the capability to firf 800 rounds a minute which isute incredibly sober stag tis tick. T appreciate you joining us. Cin i know youre very busy man man working with threat detectionec traveling all over the country c trying to keep people safe. S thank you for your time this t morning. Thank you. Back with more. 8 00 oclock hour. Well get back with latest fromf orlando coming up next. This is fox5 news morning. Shoo Law Enforcement and politicae leaders held a press conferencee within the last 30 minutes andes heres what we learned. Learned. There are a total of 49 victims. The 50th is the gunman. Omar mateen. Mee 48 of these victims have been identified and investigators sao a third weapon was found in the shooters car. Ar he had two with him inside ofnse that club arc handgun and an ar15 assault rival. Al. At one point police sayic s mateen did Exchange Gunfire with officers after emerging from a o hole in the wall that officers o created in an attempt to free t the club goers. Rs meanwhile the governor of florida rick scott asked sco a president obama to declare atoea state of emergency for thecy f t entire state. Lets try to dig deeper nowee how this could happen want wasan in the mind of omar mateen. Dr. Jay singh joins us now aw he does so many times now to dig a little bit deeper into mindset of people when things ti like this a. Good to see you again, jay. Good to see you steve andnd allison. A it happens every time we have a mass shoot organize massm casualty how does something likk this happen . How does someoneom do Something Like this . In this case it doesnt matter if thishs was a hatred america, the gay population, its a hatred off something. Thg. What is it in the mind that that creates that and then causesn cu someone to act on that in such a heinous way. S absolute, steve. Absol whats end up having in any of of these situations where we have tragic acts occurring inur the National Institute of of justice suggests itseststs approximately every fright 45 to 65 days that were going to sigh this kind of a lone wolf incident occur. Cident occ what happens is that it is that perfect or in this case unfortunately perfect mix of prejudice on the one hand andd a diss inhibition on the other. Oh this is an individual who inl wi some way feels wronged, feelsedf like they need to be able to regain control oro to be able to punish anothernoth individual. Di however, even though people mayl feel like this, the sense of seo diss inhibition and a lot of a l things can diss inhibit it us. U it could be religion. Elion it could be the culture that wea were raised in in terms of our parents and their influence on n us. Us there is something that ends up making people feel like they can actually act on that prejudiceri and turn prejudice in this casee into an act of discrimination. There was a recent incidentt that his father recalled aboutlt him being in miami and seeing two men engaged in intimateat moment, engaged in kissing andid his son was there. N wahe and he made the comment theyomnt would do this in front of my s son. Sure. With a trigger like that, if this is just speaking geon a hat crime basis here, would that bee the kind of thing, im empowerew now because something has happened and in front of my in m child . In a case like this, allisonn we need to be worried about inn that what happens is always,lw whenever we have a lack of information, we as human beingss need to rational lies situations we need to come with a way to bw able to understand or put some sense into otherwise senseless act of violence so what we end e up doing usually is we pick upik on whatever that first crumb ofo information is that we end up getting. Ge especially if it ends up leading down a direction that seems to very sensiblely explain the act. So it may be what we call cal just reason see effect. Ffect there may have been a number ofm different triggers over time. Maybe something even moree recently that happened than thin incident in miami. The problem is, jay, its getting worse. Ing w this is something over the lastr couple of decades weve seen. S we used to talk about what happened at Virginia Tech andrgh whats happened in movied in moe theaters and whats happened in churches and schools noun its t happened in a nightclub. Is it just an accept answer atwa this point for the people who pe are creating this behav its okay now to just go do this and eliminate as many people as possible whereas before itt seemed like incidents seemedme much more scattered and not ne nearly as great in volume asum a what were seeing these days . Ay . Sure. Mately one third ofhi o these incidents steve are kind k of copycat acts. At a in other words, individuals whoa become obsessive in some sort oo way in terms of taking a look in the past and what have kill k counts been in the past with paw these sorts of incidents. S incd how can i either match or end up getting higher. Gh . Almost a game, sick game ass it were. We. Importantly, though, in terms of taking a look at the overall ora trends, since september 11thmb1h until today, rates have actualla been remarkablely stable in stae terms of the overall number ofrf incidents that we end up seeings and to be able to put it in perspective im all about the at numbers. You know, were in country where we have approximately 16,000 1 homicides per year. Approximately 11,000 of thosehoe are firearm related in some wayw shape or form. F weekend, and we were doing somes film recordings and we continuously heard sirens i called a friend of mine in lawen enforcement there and just in j the day and a half that i spentt in chicago we had 12 homicides. Just to to speak to youro point the numbers may bee mber consistent as far as the number of crimes being committed. Mied sure. Or the number of homicides being committed or the numbembrm incidents. Sure. But what does it say for aes population, though, if the if t numbers are consistent but now w the body count is higher . Thehe volume is higher, the acts are more heinous than what weve seen in the past . Sure. Ure i think thats a great point, pt steve. Part of it speaks to tactics insofar as people gaining a gaia greater understanding of kind of prime targets or locations. Loc. Where individuals are going toned up being gathered in a close knit space and either notr be able to leave or simply notiy want to leave in the case of a nightclub, for example. Exale the host the guest we had thd past hour was talking about a these people were having a goodg time. Its a club its at the end of the nightt someone had a problem with uu showing his picture over and over again. Over again this is what he wanted to have h this sort of dialogue and bend b famous Everybody Knows who he s is. Sure. In these incidents, allison, wee very commonly see much more attention, significantly more attention being paid to thehe perpetrator as opposed to theedt victims, and i always say s whenever it calls to memory arem a attention in general we tenden to spend attention three thingsi things that are personal to us,a out of the ordinary and thingsis that are somehow humorous. Obviously theres no humor no hm because of that were left witht really the first two. And the sense of not being able to understand what was going g through this individuals mind or how series of events couldvet lead up to this very tragic act of violence leads to us thinkshi even more and want to pay moreay attention to this individual asa opposed to the victims. Jay, we could talk to you alu morning. We will love to. We im sure we will again very so soon. As far as studying the minds ste well that up to you, you are the expert in this case a know youll be very list busy l doing just that. Just that. W both hilry trump adjusting schedules thiscs week focusing on the shooting. Hn Hillary Clinton canceled an ance verbal event with the president. Donald trump said he would focuf more on security now thanha attacking Hillary Clinton. On joining us now to discuss theowi politics of this latest terroreo attack. Fox news host bret baier. Good morning, brett. B hey, steve, good morning. Steg we heard on some of thef t National Morning shows this mori morning already Hillary Clintonr speaking out, donaldea trumpna u speaking out adding to theiringt comments they made over the the weekend. Weeken what are we watching for from a political standpoint when itndpn comes to what happened ins wha orlando over the weekend . Well, two things. Wo tng one is, obviously atrocity downy there has changed the dynamic politically for the nation. Nat this mass terror attack at 50 people dead is now a focus the focus and the takes on number of different elements. Erent e as you sure have talked about. Do going after isis and trying to prevent the isis inspired atta attacks which it looks likeks l according to authorities this was. And also w red flags. D fla this guy was under fbi investigation before in 2013 and 2014. 14 they closed those books but yet he was still able to buy weapons last week gun rights advocates, gun control advocates still sti saying, listen, the system t s didnt work. So what happened with this investigation . So i think it ti zeros in the focus. Fus i think theyll both campaignsaa and both candidates are going ti change their entire presentatiot today and over the next couple o of days to deal solely with th this. One of things that we hearded and this was speaking a short s timing a on the today show thiss morning donald trump one ofmp things he mentioned was that this country has terrible intell right now. Ow my question to you, brett onrett broader scale of someone who haw covered president ial races in rn the past and covered the whitehe house in the past. E in the p would a candidate what a candidate says now how much of h that is i guess just saying wha i wish would happen down theow road versus what i planned to tt make changes down the yeah, i think thats a good o point. Po i dont know if its he has h lot of policy prescriptions onro the bone, if you will as of yety but hes talking about the problems that he sees. I do think that hes going to lay out some of that in a prettt detailed speech and weve seenve his mo now is to have a teleprompter speech and thenn rallies after it that are muchh more like the previous campaign. I think youre going to see both candidates really hit on this. T donald trump more on the isis and immigration front andront Hillary Clinton more on the isii fighting overseas and gunun control part, and youll see a dichotomy a difference betweenet the two right away. And as far as hillary clintoa is concerned, this was a weekr s that Hillary Clinton was to beab celebrating with president obamd this was going to be their big r week they kind of rolled out this onetwo punch and, youchnd know, trying to say, look, wero a that has been delayed obviouslyo because of what happened over wp the weekend. The kend so what are we going to see frof her this week . . Well, youre going to see her meeting with bernie sandersders tomorrow and thats significantd because hes probably going t tt eventually throw his support behind her. Behi youre right. Yo it changes the dynamic with thet president out in green bay,en b wisconsin that event has been b canceled. It will be postponed but it changes the entire conversationo of this election and how itow i affects the polls donald trumpru has had, you know, pretty bad week and this, you know as badsd as this sounds, this refocus changes and resets his campaign. And weve seen evidence of that after events that have beeb unfortunately similar to this ii the past. E brett, i know you got a lot togt talk about on special report. R. Well let you get ready for ther show. Well see you tonight. Seyou thanks, steve. You got it. Gott. 8 35. Check in with caitlin roth and h get a look whats happening hape outside today. Mutes celebrities weighing in broadwaa paying tribute last night durinn the tony awards to victims ofics the tragedy in orlando. Ando kevin is here with more onore that. That kev, good morning. D morning. Good morning steve and allison. D tough day to talk abouty to tab entertainment stuff but lastut t night at the tony awards actually a very beautiful tribute to the victims of orlando while the show itself tl was very good as well james corden great job hosting the tonies last night but obviouslys the tragic events were lingerere throughout the night. Ig every speak, every performanceen you could just feel the sadness that were going through theseghe performers host james corden started with the show with a shh tribute to the victims and alsoo hamilton creator and star lynn n Manuel Miranda celebrated hisra best original score award with emotional son net. Et take a listen your tragedy is our trap dee theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced and is loved. Hate will never win. Er w when senseless acts of tragedyre remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day, this shoo is proof that history remembersm we live through times when hateh and fear seemed stronger. Tron we rise and fall and light fromo thyme embers remembrance that im hope and love lasts longer. And love is love is love is lovl is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside. One of the challenges of thit show last night was trying to, you know torque remain in a sense of paying tribute but alsa continue with an entertaining show and have the show go on. They did a wonderful job off balancing out that emotional quality. I cant believe they were able to pull it off but they did. Corden speech as you saw every e moment of the night. One of the emotional moments ofo the night was Frank Langella lal taking the stage he won a tonyy award from leading actor. Aor ill put my speech aside and isd want to specifically mentionedyi what happened. He said when something badad happens, we have three choices. E we let it define us, destroy usy or we let it strengthen us ends said today in orlando we hadad hideous dose of reality i youliy were you orlando to be strongtrn because im standing in room full of the most generous humanm beings on earth and well beeahe with you every step of the way. Y for the opening in the showo corden did comedically join thej indicate of hamilton with altont spoof on hamiltons openingpe number. They essentially introduced james core dont as they do inh the show when they introduced miranda as hamilton. Inn construction president obama and the first lady. Impact hamilton had onad o education. Edatio they performed their yorktown without the muskets tot pay tribute to orlando. The big question whether or notn hamilton would break the recordc for most tony wins. In most nominations is hamilton hao with 16. With 1 though the musical was shy of just one award it won 11 just j shy of breaking the record for c the producers had which had 12ad back in 2001. One of the most emotionalal moments of the night standig s ovation tour zinnia, she has ini my opinion probably the most beautiful voice ive ever hearde on broadway best lead actresscts award for the musical whole role in the color purple much thise s was her broad debut. Eb oprah had the honor off introducing the cast for theirtf performance of overture and im here. My fiance lauren show this shos on broadway every time cynthia does this one particular song s everyone stands up in the middle of the show and gives her a a standing ovation as they did tyd last night during the actualctua show. That was amazing. T wa very emotional night. Nal nit. Amazing singer. Name a lot coming up. Ing i do want to mention before i go obviously the Orlando Attack was horrible but on friday eveningye we had at tack as well onn Christina Grimmie the excon eco test ant from the voice. V who was killed after her concert while signing autographs. Ogph her mother brother Marcus Grimmie tackled the shooter whoo the shooter then shot himself. F but Marcus Grimmie the orlando n police have said that tackling n saved a lot of lives and hes as hero for doing that. And he shared a very emotionalmi tribute on his Facebook Page i shared on mine kevin mccarthyy fox he attributes to sister and incredible. Unimaginable. What a devastating horrendou weekend. Weekd. Right. But, yeah, i havent i i cant even be myself its hard h to be upbeat and everything likl that. Tough. Sorry for not being myself. Youre being yourself byy feeling how you feel. Inw yo yeah.
