Ri i know you want to shed morehee light on this story. You know, its fascinating toin watch and scary to watch. At you know first question, why did you decide from the veryci fro beginning that you wanted toantt share this story because you had to have the cameras and therend make that early decision to deco document this trip not knowingok what may lie ahead for you . Ou reporter well it was about a six weeks after my original symptoms that started and atnd t that point i had no idea what ia was going on. My first inclination was to document my thoughts in n case i was going blind in bothh eyes. Eyes. Thats how many answers i didnt have. Ve so i wanted to document mynt thoughts and Start Talking about things because i didnt knowt k what the future would hold. I also knowing what i do, i wa wanted to document because i wai hoping maybe i could get answern down the road. R it wasnt until about a couple u weeks after i startedta documenting that i found out itt was in fact a stroke. A blockage in my blood vesselve leading to my optic nerve thatea caused what im going through, u and then it opened up anothernoh door of health care of what imi really doing now and thats tha trying to prevent another stro stroke. And you called it almostlmost paraphrase ago blessing in in disguise for that first symptomt to appear. So how are you now, and what ar you doing to prevent this fromro getting any worse . I have what ive been told permanent vision there is myth left eye. I have about its almost like a thing of vaseline smeared across my eye. Again, yes, you are absolutelyel right. Ri this was a blessing in disguiseu because i could be dead right dg now. I could have had a stroke that a went to the brain. Nt to th i could be paralyzed right now. N so it was awakeup call for me. So now im a cardiac patient. Pe i went in and had two had procedures. Pr they found two Heart Defectsefts that im now dealing with that t most likely caused the stroke. K but now im on blood thinners, n im on aspirin and i have smalll cardiac monitor that was w implanted in my chest to liter literally document everyve heartbeat 24 hours a day. D my doctors will get thatha wirelessly through every dayy and if theres a problem, ill,i get a phone call. Cal its honestly just trying tot t lead a healthy life to preventre this from happening again andnd regular checkups to myy cardiologist. Logi chris, whats the take homea for everybody else out there . E more just to make sure that you do these regular visits . That v you really never know whats happening inside your body untit you get think that other folks can gaini from what youve been dealingn d with . Well, a, listen to yourou bodies and especially when ithen comes to your eyes. If there is one take away fromro all of this, if you wake up or have any kind of sudden vision changes or sudden vision loss,ol there was 1100 chance theres Something Else wrong. Ro get it check out. Get itck out for me it was a stroke. It could be ms. It c it could be medications, itionsi could be hereditary. Edit it could be many different dfe things but if your eyes areyesre literal the windows to your boy body. So if theres any kind of visios loss, go see a doctor docto immediately because for me it fm was a stroke and if i maybef i e gotten there a little bit earlier, i might have been ablel to prevented some later visionin loss. Chris, thank you so much forr sharing your story. Urtory hopefully it its helped anothea family like it has helped yoursy to get that treatment today. Toy reporter i hope so. Okay. 7 36 right now. Bsol finding something thats ryea latable. With that we have the challenges as well. As w one of the challenges in d. C. D schools the situation with leadw found in some of the buildingsmu and water. At. Obviously parents were upset. Ut its been some time now. Ow have we fixed that situation ori still working on it . Waltz thee status. I mean, i think the situatioa was really an epic failure of communication. Un as is our practice for department of General Services e continucontinues to test for lei buildings annually but one of bo the things that we faileed to ww report to parents when we foundf lead how we fixed the situation. Usually its a simple fix with a filter, and we try to core don off the spigot or wherever the affected faucet is. S. But we hadnt been great low grl about letting parents know whene we found it and when we fix id d it he Scott Department ofscotpae General Services out of dance of caution assessing every Single School building between b now and june 30. Jun we are also offering for the t department of the environmentirt free lead test to go any family that wants it, convenient placel all across the city. And you know weve commit theomt weve apologized. The deputy mayor for education has come out on behalf of thef T Administration to apologize to t parents because we never want our parents to feel insecuree about lead in the building. Ing and we havent had any school based led results that haveave affected children. Cld we talk about that tt communication, that plays notlat just in the lead situation wetiw had incidents of violence in or outside of schools or at metro public areas people from from different schools changes wereer made dismissal times, et cetera to try to combat some of that. Ha again i think parents just wantw to know whats going on here ane students want to know whatsnow going on here. So is that also a situation that is remediated through betterthre communication or do we have toav make more changes to keep school safer. I think its a lot more thano just better communication. Cation you know, weve been very been v concerned with the level ofev of School Violence that weve seens over the past month. But its caused to us completell redeploy our Security Resources and so weve met with every eve Single High School principal inl the past month to make sure that they are deploying security secr personnel the right way. Way. We have all hands on deck durinr high volume transitions. Raio we now have deployed our schoolo staff to the metro stations too make sure that things are cooll and we work really close c proximity with mpd to try to keep our young people safe. Af i think the behind the scenes se work that you havent actually a fox5 has seen it because mattat ackland did a great story on the Restorative Justice we have at a balou where were trying to tea our young people to beto accountable. People didnt see that storye it was a situation people werepw not necessarily being suspendedd and taken out of the learningtha environment. Nment but i way to try to keep them theremt and learn from the mistakes. Am i paraphrasing it correctly. Y absolutely. If we put kids out on thekids o streets suspend them criminalize the behaviors then literallyerly there is no remediation, right . T and so what were doing is, through counseling, throughgh mediation, through reparationsor kids have to take responsibili responsibility, they have to apologize. They have to make amends and man were finding that a lot of ourr kids just havent had that kind of experience before. Ef i think what we also know is we can mediate a lot of thesehe conflicts before they happen and so a lot of things that you havent seen are the fightss weve averted because with the t help of our roving leaders outds of the department of parks andks recs and our special Police Officers, our schools are a identifying kids who are havingv problems or having tensions andn were literally going home to hm the family and working with wit families to try to mediate thest conflicts because school needsbe e be a place where kids arecaer having a good time. Engaged inea fighting. And getting through theirti entire School Career and graduating. Aduang. Graduating were close to it this year. Last year io n 2015 graduationdt rates across the system were upw about 10 from the year before. How are we looking now in 2016 . 2 were on track to see anothea increase in Graduation Rates. At which makes me really happy. Hay the more young people that wee can graduate in four years, the more we can get them into thein college or career or to the military. So that they can be productiverv citizens and were seeing greate kids going to amazing places. My numbers we went from 58 to 64 last year. Thats right. T if we increase that this thi year, thats great news acrosssa the system to see that steady growth. Gr National Average was still s lagging behind schools in virginia around 90 or more forr fairfax Largest School district in the area. We still have work to do. To d how do we continue to bridge b that divide. At d sure. The National Average just hitrat 80 for the first time ever, right . And so we were well,el well behind the national averagl and i think were closing thecln gap pretty quickly we have a goal to get to 75 four year Graduation Rate by 2017, and if we continue to progress at the pace that weree on well reach that. That we also have to recognize thatha we recognize our fiveyear fivee Graduation Rate as well for some of our young people it take thet five years. We have a number of students who come here from other countries i or who were so far behind or who might have had a break in their educational experience, the goal is to graduate, right . Itsht i great when they graduate in foui years. But we also have to give some se time for our young people whoeol need a little bit more. Or right. The good news there, wereews seeing not just improvement one year but steady improvement ovet the last couple every years. Yea always good to talk to you.
