for tucker barnes keeping her eye on the skies for today and tomorrow. >> definitely, tony. we could see our first snowflakes of the season tomorrow. so we have to keep a close eye on it. let's take a look at our maps and we'll show you what is going on. temperature wise it's 45 degrees at national airport. 37 at baltimore. and temperatures overall pretty much into the 30s and the 40s. but things are going to warm up a little bit today but not qui as warm as yesterday. we totally were just given a little treat yesterday because it was into the 60s. it's 47 degrees right now in boston and 44 in new york as we take a look at the mid- atlantic. but you can see the colder air well to the west of us. that will be heading our way. and along with it we'll see some precipitation as the low pressure system develops along the gulf and moves up the mid- atlantic and that's what will set us up for a chance of seeing some snow shower. now right now there are some clouds to the west and to the north of us and a little bit of icy drizzle and mix just over areas to the far northwest. but here is a look at future cast to show you the precipitation starting to edge its way across the area through the early morning hours of saturday. and even though it shows green some of this could be snow tomorrow. and looking at the 1:00 hour, we're still deal with it. it won't clear out much until into the evening hours of saturday before it's all said and done. and then we're just left with some clouds after that. and we're headed for sunshine by sun. and here is a look at your temperatures today. our high into the low 50s. increasing clouds tonight so be prepared for that. and as i said, not quite as warm as yesterday. but tomorrow you're going to want to bundle up. we'll keep an eye to the sky for you. tony. >> thank you very much, gwen. and our top story this morning, one of the national zoo's biggest attractions is leaving town. if fact leaving the country. >> the bee love the giant panda cub tai shan is moving out. he was born here if the district but under a contract he does belong to china. and sherry ly is joining us live from the zoo in northwest with more on this story. it's kind of a bittersweet story for us, isn't it, sherry? >> reporter: it is. it's hard to face reality. we've known this is coming but yet people are still in disbelief. because as we've watched tai shan grow up, a lot of people in the area consider him one of their own. they come here to see him all of the time and this is the only home tai shan has known since he was born and he'll be headed back to china and will go back early next year so it is time to say goodbye to tai shan. the 4-year-old panda is now more than 200 pounds and all grown up. his name means butter stick in chinese. when he was born he was about the size of a stick of butter. so across the washington area, people have come to love and know the black eyed boy panda cub. they watched him on panda cam and became an attraction. he was supposed to good home after he turned 2 years old but the national zoo got a two-year extension. now that time is up too and tai shan must be returned to china for breeding. we've always known the day was coming but for many in the city it's sad to see our panda cub go. >> has that time come up already? oh, my. everything has a deadline, right. >> well it's supposed to be two years and they got a two year extension. >> how about another? how about another extension? >> why is it important to washington? >> people love him. >> it's the reality of something you love. it's hard to give it up. >> reporter: now the parents are here on a ten-year, $10 million loan. and they are also due to go back to china next year. in just about an hour, the zoo will hold a press conference to discuss tai shan and the parents. i asked if the parents would be going home too and didn't say anything about that and they said the zoo will continue to have pandas but there will be no extension this time around for tai shan. live at the national zoo, sherry ly, fox 5 morning news. >> we need a new panda baby, that's all. >> and the pressure is on. >> thank you, sherry. the unemployment numbers are in for november and they're not as bad as expected. the nation's jobless rate fell to 10% last month, down from 10.2% in october. employees cut -- employers cut 11,000 jobs last month, much better than the 130,000 watt street had expected. the figures come on the heels of the white house job summit yesterday where the president saidoy yeahs will be part of new legislation for congress to consider. >> there are things that we're doing here in washington that are inhibiting you then we want to know about it. we want to leverage whatever public dollars are spent and we are under no illusion that somehow the federal government can spend it's way out of this recession. >> president obama is now heading to allentown, pennsylvania, a place that has been hard hit by the recession. the president will meet with business leaders and university professors to discuss the job losses. and now to the latest on health care reform. democrats in the senate rejected an amendment to the president's health care bill that would reverse cuts to medic air. approval would have struck out money for expanding coverage to millions of uninsured americans. lawmakers have said medicare is in trouble and needs to be fixed and not raided to create another new government program but democrats say seniors won't lose guaranteed benefits. there are reports of a major offensive in afghanistan. about 1,000 marines are launching operation cobra anger in hell map province. no hell -- hellman province. and hillary clinton and stanley mcchrystal are pushing to send moraleis to afghanistan and nato will send 7,000 more soldiers and promising more to come. and we're also getting video of a horrific suicide attack in pakistan. a gunman stormed. a crowded mosque spraying gunfire. they killed 35 people before blowing themselves up. soldiers blocked off the streets. a wave of attacks killed over 400 since an attack was launched against militants in october. a follow up on sheila dixon fraud trial. she stopped short of a full apology. he she was found -- she was found guilty of using gift cards used for needy families. she still faces perjury charges for another case. and d.c. police are looking for the suspect that shot a pep co-worker. a group of men approached a pepco crew as they were working on a cable and some sort of argument broke out and one of the men pulled out a gun and opened fire. the worker is expected to be okay. crew has to return to the site this morning to complete work on the cable. a maryland mother wants to forgive the teen that's killed her son but it will take time. a 16-year-old admitted to punching christopher jones in may in crofton. the teen fell and later died. javel george will be sent to a juvenile detention facility where he may stay until he turns 21. how did you discover that the salahis had entered? did you discover it through their facebook or was it your own discovery that some interlopers had entered. >> we did not discover that on our own. we were advised it via the following day. >> and advised by whom, sir? >> the facebook. >> and that's a serious security flaw, according to congresswoman eleanor holmes norton. she grilled the head of the secret service. the salahis didn't show up. we talked with the congresswoman and she called the salahis fame hungry and likened them to con artists. she said they may get an invite they can't owe. >> and you can add a small electric company in winchester. terry and velma whitmire worked on a generator for the couple but they haven't paid the bill for $550. and they called ab placed a note was carjacked by tw -- men yesterday. they are already behind bars. >> reporter: julia corker was half a block from whole when police say she decided to pull over to make a call on her cell phone. as me -- she made the call two men knocked on the window. >> two men grabbed her and took her out of the car. >> reporter: and they jumped into the chevy tahoe with tennessee plates and took off. >> she was shaken. there was no hospital treatment but she was shaken. >> reporter: the two men had driven the tahoe to this taco bell and little did they know they were being tracked by on star. when the call came out that the tahoe was here, all police had to do was walk out their front door. >> reporter: julia lives with her father and works for a real estate firm. inthis photo she's to the right of her mother. the senator released a statement which reads in part, she's a brave young woman and she handled herself well. police were incredible, all of them were very, very professional. they found the suspects very, very quickly, julie and i went over late last night and she identified them. police say no weapons were used but the men used a common tactic to disarm the 22-year- old. >> trying to engage in conversation and you kind of -- you leyour guard down and free yourself up and as you engage the conversation they have in mind what they want to do. >> reporter: the two suspects, 22 and 25 years old old, are locked up in prince george's county. paul wagner, fox 5 news. >> meanwhile, a cold case is cracked in virginia. this man is headed back to virginia to face charges. the case dates back to 1987. police say john kensy broke into a woman's home in fairfax county and attacked her. she escaped out the window. more than two decades later dna evidence linked him to the crime. he was arrested in pennsylvania. a grand jury has indicted him on rape and other charges. the man suspected of killing chandra levy is facing new charges. ingmar guandeke is threatening a witness. he wrote a letter from behind bars and had the letter delivered to the witness' home. he's also facing a murder charge. police found chandra levy's body one year after disappearing in 2001. it was back in april that the maersk alabama was hijacked before being rescued by navy seals. afterwards the captain was hailed as a hero but now the crew is painting a different picture. >> reporter: a hero to millions of americans, but not his chief engineer. captain richard phillips could have lost his life but according to some crew members, the captain is to plame for the near disaster. >> the story of him being a hero, which didn't come from the crew, was the predominant voice and so nobody listened to any of the 18 other people that were trying to tell the truth. >> reporter: philips is being accused of ignoring repeating warnings to keep his freighter 600 miles off of the african coast. crew members allege that the captain failed to change of the ship's course after learning of the threat. >> he didn't do his job so the pirate walked in there and pointed the gun at their faces. >> reporter: phillips has refused to comment on the allegations, however as recently as last month, phillips did indicate he was proud of his crew. >> i've always told my crew if you get into an emergency situation and you do the right thing, you'll come out successful. >> reporter: it was said that he offered himself as a hostage in ex change for the crew's safety. however in a follow-up the captain indicated he never volunteered. a lawsuit has been filed against maersline limited for sending that ship into pirate infested water without any protection. he's a decorated veteran and now his fight is over a flagpole in front of his house. the cornell wants to put up a flagpole in his yard. he put up a temporary pole for labor day and that earned him a battle with the homeowner's association. it says you have to keep flags on smaller poles attached to the home. >> i think its ridiculous in the first place because i think my flagpole or staff looks better than anything hanging on a tree out there. >> the 90-year-old colonel says his way of flying the flag shows more respect and he'll fight for it in court if he has to. finally there is a diagnosis for a 12-year-old virginia girl who has been sneezing thousands of times a day for weeks. it started when she had a bad cold and didn't go away. doctors have diagnosed her with and is, or pediatric neuropsychological disorder associated with strep. >> we can treat it. >> people need to know about it and the more we know as participants, the more we're going to conquer this. >> some of the other signs of this disorder, becoming difficult to reason with, obsessive or compulsive behavior and ticks or tourette's. it can be happening on a school bay. but maybe you can get out and take pictures and just relax and enjoy it. we're not talking about a whole lot of accumulation, at least not at this point as far as the models are concerned. things could ange, but for now we're just talking a light dusting, to about an inch on grassy areas. but let's take a look at where we stand. 45 right now. 39 in gaithersburg, 39 in frederick, and 38 in martinsberg in west virginia. and areas along west virginia and into the far northwest, some areas are seeing some freezing drizzle. temperatures to the west, take a look at the 20s. we'll get that cooler air moving in here and it's just going to collide with the moisture coming in from the south as we get ready to deal with the low pressure system. it's 44 degrees in new york this hour. and 47 degrees is boston. so let's take a look. down in dallas in the parts of texas, dealing with plenty of show and freezing rain. they've got lots of moisture along the southern coastal region for houston and they could see more snowfall during the course of today. but we're concerned about what will head up the eastern seaboard. right now we have clouds rolling in. we'll see increasing clouds into the later part of the day and so be prepared for that. and my temperature back is coming back up again. and as far as -- a lot going on in here. a far as conditions for saturday are concerned, this coastal storm is going to move up to the north and if you take a look here, we have the rain- snow line along the 95 corridor so that's what we're watching carefully. some of the pod -- models are showing more rain from d.c. to the east and then the mix right here, the line right here just to the west of us where we might see more of it. but this could change. so we are watching it closely. but as it stands right now, it looks like we'll see an inch of accumulation on grassy area and as far as streets are concerned, the surface is to warm for it to stick around. and areas to the far northwest and to the north could see more in terms of accumulation. but as i said, that could change if the temperature drops and then it could be a totally different scenario. if the path of that low pressure system moves to the east and then it will be a different scenario. so we're watching the models for you so we'll know and we'll have more on our news tonight with gary and sue. and 40 degrees for tonight's forecast as far as d.c. is concerned so a little cool tonight and into the 30s to the west. your five-day forecast showing you temperatures are going to start to drop behind that system as it heads through. cooler air, into the 40s. sunday, beautiful day. so that means the weekend is not a total washout. that's good news for you. bright skies by monday but once again we'll keep an eye on the low pressure system for saturday. tony and gurvir. and the weather forecasts have been talking about this. gwen has been talking about the snow, so v-dot wants to make sure it's ready. >> they are treating trouble spots on northern virginia roads this morning to prepare for freezing weather and snowfall tomorrow. v-dot reminds drivers to keep an if adequate distance (announcer) pillsbury toaster strudel. the one kids want to eat. this weekend is a great time to get your home ready for the holidays. >> yes, it is. holly more sis getting great decorating tips in cleveland park where st. albans is hosting a holiday house tour. a great idea going on this weekend. so far everything has been beautiful. >> reporter: it is absolutely jaw-dropping. and as you can see, this house wins for best view. that is a view of the cathedral from the dining room. this is the third house we've been at this morning. there is five houses on the tour. it is the 27th year they have done this for st. albans and it helps raise money for the faculty and other programs for the school. and will the me show you the decorations in the dining room that might inspire you. look at this cornucopia of colors and flowers. they have different florists come in and donate and decorate for the holidays. this is amy stroud wick from abington bloom. she came up with the beautiful things you are about to see. but the home belongs tourism and cashel and this is the house manager. that's a big job. >> but it is fun. >> reporter: and you both currently have students at the school. >> yes. >> reporter: so you wanted to give back to the school and seeing the benefits of st. albans and you have a daughter at the cathedral tour. so to be a part of the tour means what to you? >> it's a great way to help out and the funds go to different projects to help them take on and it's just fun. the women come from the different classes and rep and -- and help and it's great. >> and we want to show off the house. and now that's a heck of a banister. what do we think of that there? >> the colors are beautiful. >> reporter: and as a house manager, it's good to mention that people need to mind their p's and q's and be respectful of what is done here. >> absolutely. this is a long-standing tradition and they're used to walking through homes and enying them. >> and every house has a fabulous christmas tree. would you ever decorate your christmas tree like this? >> well i never have. but i'll think about it next year. >> reporter: i love the peacock feathers and the cones on top. i think that's just something different. and the colors are cool and go with the living area. >> she did a great job of mixing the colors in with what was already here and each room kind of goes with the decor of the room. she put a lot of work into it. >> yeah, she did. and did she come up with the disco ball? >> that was for my daughter's 12th birthday. >> reporter: if that doesn't shea -- say christmas party, i don't know what does. and who comes to the tour? >> well clubs come rom all over the washington area and as far as baltimore and pennsylvania. >> reporter: really? >> groups come as well as just a lot of local people who love the tradition and love to see what different designers do to houses and how they decorate them. >> reporter: and that speaks to the reputation this tour has if people are traffic from that far to make a day of it. and while all of the parents are working to pull this off and volunteers their times, you do also make the boys be involved? >> absolutely. the boys help serve. there is a luncheon at the school. and the people that comen buses will go shop at the school and then go to the luncheon and the boys serve, they bus the tables and i don't know where they eat during this time. >> they eat enough l other times. >> reporter: so here we are in this lovely room and there is a lot of natural decor and we're teasing everyone because there is more on your tour on the outside. >> we have a christmas tree with a train around it, and all kinds of surprises. >> reporter: so see, we didn't show you everything. we just are showing you some of the highlights for you to come see the tour in its entirety. the tour goes this friday -- today, we're minutes away from starting. i think we're ten minutes from the headmaster showing up at this house, so the tour is today and tomorrow. myfoxdc.com is our website and we have a link to st. albans to get directions on how to get there. you can get your tickets there. and they have the option of the luncheon as well and then the holiday boutique with more than 50 vendors. after you go on this, to you'll be in the mood to good only and decorate your house or go buy a new house which is what i'm thinking. back to you guys. [ laughter ] >> that first one i'll take. i'd have to take it. >> i think we'll just get one and we'll be okay. as you know we've had some wonderful dance companies with all us morning long and competing in front of the rockets. we have a winner, dawn crafton. and this is the studio manager and dance teacher. and congratulations to you. and tell us what qualities you saw. >> well as rockets we are proud to be iconic women. we have a drive and a desire and we saw a little twinkle in their eye. >> and it's about the team work and we saw that with the ladies. as tiffany says, there is no i in rocket and we're glad to see the rocket brand our legacy and we hope their friends and family can see the show. >> and you all started just like they did. >> we did. >> and you re little at one time. >> and we love seeing that look in their eye and reflecting back when we were their age. >> and you stard taking youngsters at young. >> two years old. >> i can only imagine. >> we have all girls here. do you take boys as well. >> we do. >> because my son loves to dance. >> well bring him over. >> i might do that. tell me what this means for you all. because you're going to get a lesson from the rockets? >> it's very exciting because i think every little girl goes to see the rockets and you see them on tv and in the parade and you always wish that you could be one of those girls to work with them, so that will be wonderful. >> we want to get oust way because we want to see them dance. can we do that? >> what are they doing? >> they are doing why by annie lennox. >> and this is the dawn crafton dance connection doing annie lennox's why.
