Nestor mato spoke to one woman worried the pesticide may be more dangerous than the zika virus itself. I think it is a far greater problem then the zika virus for us here in southwest marshall has been living in naples for more than a decade. She says the naled chemical is scarier to her than the zika virus. The chemical is the active ingredient in mosquito spraying throughout lee and collier counties. They are openly spraying, they are spraying while we are out walking, we are sitting at sporting events. Marshall says she was upset with spraying near Lely High School while children and families were out during a sporting event. She says everyone is getting exposed whether they want to or not. If we spray its potentially harmful, and if we dont theres people can come down with a virus. Naled has been controversial because of the effect it could have on pets, people and our agriculture. Patrick linn of collier Mosquito Control tells us he cant say the the chemical is perfectly safe. He says with travel related cases of zika in the community the main concern is minimizing the spread of the virus. Which he says is much more important than the tiny risks. I think its sort of a double edged sword. Collier county uses naled in small doses which the Florida Department of agriculture says it could cause difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea and tremors.
