I love it teenage waste land. We had to play that song. Perfect fit. Its perfect because first up we decided to cover a parenting topic we think crew going to find interesting because tiff fashioned herself measure of my three kids. No matter what side of the spectrum you are on. Are you a helicopter parent, are you opposite do you do everything for your kid or more like our first guest antihelicopter mom. Yes she is. Megan mccormick refuses to do for her kids why . Because shes my hero. Nonhelicopter mom. Welcome back megan mccormick. She has six kids to not helicopter. We were talking in the dressing room beforehand we were saying is it easier because we dress together. Although we clash you would never know we dress together. If you have more kids it is their business. Do you think you would have been the same if you only had one, two or three. I would have been smarter if i only had one, two or three. But since i do have six i have to live with the consequences. I dont know if it would be easy or not. I only have two children that remain at home with me right now. The other four have all gone on strike. Wait are they in college . They are all in college. None of them have run away or moved out . No i wish they would. I wou p near the door. I only have two at home right now, but i have to say, i do nothing for them. I really dont. I mean, i am trying to put out capable human beings out there and, i dont need somebody calling me somewhere down the road some wife or some husband saying, what the heck did you tag me with, these are awful human beings. See, okay, i just have to say tiff, found this article and for your teen were going to try to go through as many as possible. I love this article. Its great. And, you came to mind instantly. When i like, joke or say youre my hero you really are. Because, heres something i want to show you a picture of tiff knows this story because i came into the office today telling this story. My i wont name this kid, i know you usually throw out their names. This is a piece of homework. The teacher eil of my kids last night and said, to this child, dont forget your homework. Like one last chance i will give awe grade on it if you turn it in today. Its important. When i left for work, that was the only thing sitting on the kitchen island. So what did i do . I wanted to take it to school. I will be honest because the teacher emailed me too. I felt a little bit on the hook about it. I took a picture of it instead and left it sitting there. So much smarter. It was hard. No its not hard at all. Youre just making it hard. I used to work at the school my children went to for grade school i used to go into work at 11 00 and their lunch or two would be sitting on the counter or whatever and i would literally, it would walk right past it, to get my car keys to go to my car. I wouldnt even bring it. When i would leave work at the end ever the day they didnt get a ride with me. Taking you home today. This is the world were living in Poor Teachers are up against everybody. I would have emailed that teacher and said he doesnt need anymore chances thats the end of the story thats what i would have emailed back. Its hard because she did the homework. She didnt blow it off she did it. It was sitting there it was done. And forgot it. What you got . Heres a list of things i want to go through some of them. Supposed to stop doing for your teen. My situation was, i grew up in a single parent home my mom was raising three of us and worked an hour away so she wasnt there when we got up she wasnt there when we got home from school because of her work situation. So a lot of these things my mom never did for us. Thats part of the reason why i think if i were a parent i would parent the same way. Just because, you know you kind of want to pass on the stuff that happened to you. You know. [laughter] here are the list of eight things you should stop doing. Waking them up in the m never wake them up. What age did you stop . What i think is interesting in some of this clearly at some point youre responsible for them, youre responsible for theytheir well being. Youre always raising an adult, but when does it come to the point where it is their responsibility and not yours . Is there an age . First of all, they miss the bus they got to find their own ride in grade school a neighbor, somebody else. In high school absolutely not. Remember shes got the kid that took uber to high school. They arent allowed to take a car to school if they cant get out themselves. High school i would never wake anybody up. I slept until 10 30 on a saturday morning and my mother asked how my son got work. He works at 7 00 a. M. Hi a job in high school, i dont remember you ever waking me up he got himself to work, thats what he does. He has been working there for two years he knows he has to get up and get out the door. Isnt it funny, i feel like at this point i already like your kids. You know what i mean . Thats very generous, but i got to tell you might bring them all in here one day and you might say differently. You might say you have a couple a couple of real they clean up well. I will say thats a very airbrushed photo. [laughter] couple those arent even mine. A couple of those are neighbors. [laughter] i took some good looking children from my neighbors house and say hey you look a lot better. Put pictures up in your living room of kids that arent even yours. Shes like what else you got. Making their breakfast packing their lunch. Dont do that. You lunches. Yeah they do. Filling out their paperwork. We have covered that. Just really quick on filling out the paperwork. My oldest now is just getting to the college age. People are like where did she apply, you know forms, recommendation letters . I have no idea. Shes done all of that. And she should be. A lot of parents do the paperwork, and im not just talking college admissions, but you know camp forms, School Registration forms, all of that first of all i couldnt get into college again if i had to so lets just be clear about that so i couldnt help my children fill out anything for College Applications or essays i couldnt get myself into anything. I dont have it in me, but they do. Thats what you want your daughter to be doing. Shes going to college. You want her to be able to fill out her own paperwork and do her own stuff. What else you got. I love her. Making your failure to plan theirme its a terrible idea. Has it happened . Never. At a moment never. Never. No. Where they failed to plan . Negative. Do they see you as being loving and caring . I hope not. [laughter] i really hoping they are all watching right now, and saying, god she is just as awful on tv as she is in person. No because i know your kids friends like you. They do like me. My kids friends do like me but that last part about the emergencies, so, that article which i read which i loved and i want to meet that lady and become her number one fan also stalker because a brilliant stuff she wrote i have a big bucket i have always had. It has crap in it whatever. This is a good thing my junior in High School Just had a chemistry project i dont know what it w. Im lucky if i know he is in chemistry class. I do not know any of my kids classes. It could be a game show i could fail miserable. Name three has in grad school. I couldnt name it. There was a picture drone, he was doing protons and neutrons. I know nothing about that. It is none of my business and i already took chemistry and by the way did extremely poor on it. He made his own plan in taking care of it. Especially as it relates to projects she has a good point. I think thats where parents extra stuff the projects. I agree i dont know what projects my kids have either. I feel like when they get a grade on their project its truly their own grade pass or fail grade or not. I think its important when they go to college they are on their own. Im going to go through these. Doing their emails, emailing and calling their teachers and coaches and meddling in academics. A good time to talk about these topics by having a weekly family meeting. Is that something you no. No time for a family meeting. The family meeting is my husband and i tell them what is happening and get with the program or find a different place to go this is the way its going to roll here. Some people are going to think shes really hard core, doesnt she love her kids . I hope so. They love them deeply. They are all remarkably great human beings they are all fun in different ways, but they are people. And people are extremely annoying there is a lot of you cook dinner you have family dinner . I do have family dinner. Now that it has gotten so small that entails putting something in the microwave heating it up and there is your family meal. But when they were at home . Yes i always had family dinners. Were out of time. Thank you for having me. I love being here. We talked about other topics we would like to discuss. I would love to be here for it, but i do love my children so nobody starts sending you hate mail i do love of them. They are all extraordinary successful. They are all doing exactly what i was hoping and my husband was hoping they would be capable, confident and competent adults thats what i want. I love it. Thank you so much for being here. You should have a website. Were going to take a look at our arts cameras plus picture of the day. Viewer danielle sent us this precious photo of 6 week old jo big brother as you can see from the shot. How sweet is that it almost looks old timey. I know. It is like i have that black and white sepea tone to it. So send us your photo entry email it to us at pictures themorningblend. Com. How milwaukee kids will have clearer days ahead thanks to kind people who have their eye im Russ Feingold and i approve this message. You know, seven hundred thousand dollars in the scheme s. Is a pretty reasonable compensation level. Ron johnson paid himself seven hundred thousand dollars a year. All told, he took a ten Million Dollar corporate payout then moved to washington. Where he fights against even the existence of any federal minimum wage. Millions for him. Not even 7. 25 an hour for us. Senator ron johnson. For big corporate interests, welcome back to the Morning Blend kid who is struggle in school sometimes cant see. Maybe they havent had a proper eye exam or many times they need glasses. Take a look at this. Can you read the words . No. Can you see any of the shapes . I can see one. With your now can you see the words . Yup. Aww. Think anyone that wears glasses remembers that moment when they could first see. Wisconsin vision is responsible for helping that young girl and many others see their full potential thanks to clear days ahead program. Paul george is the coowner and chairman of the board of which is vision and Darren Horndasch is the president and ceo. Welcome back you guys. I remember that moment being in class, and not realizing before i had an eye exam that i couldnt see the board. Because you dont know what youre not seeing until you see it. Talk a little bit about the clear days ahead and what that does for kids. Sure, well as we know 80 of learning is through the eyes. And when children cant see in the classroom, its very difficult for them to learn. So, in 2010, we started thinking about how can we have that because thats what we do all day. We do eye exams we sell glasses. But how can we service the community in which this company grew up . And so we took the opportunity to reach out to the Milwaukee Teacher Education Association to ask the question, and how we could get into the Milwaukee Public School system and really service some economically challenged schools. Right. How does it work . You have this partnership with mte a m ps. What does it mean in a practical mps when we first started it was difficult to gain their trust. They didnt know what our reasons to be involved were for and now they contact us which is really great. It allow us to have them select the schools they feel that has the most need. We have to do the screenings first. Were doing two schools right now browning and barack obama. We did the screenings last week ov00 42 of them failed. Wow. Thats a higher than the other 12 schools we have done. Its been about 32 , but there could be a lot of past fails so, in two weeks what does fail mean . M maybe they didnt understad the questions they didnt understand what we were asking them to do so well bring our doctors in in two weeks and do glasses. Almost 1,000 failed. 879. In the first 12 schools. So again, some of that could be understanding the question, but, worth a second look at a minimum. Yeah. Thats a lot of kids. Keep in mind in the 12 schools we have almost donated a thousand pair of glasses and screened 2500 children. Is that part of the reason why these schools are selected within the poli program is tt have an eye exam or dont have the money to get glasses so they cant see if they dont have a Financing Support Program . Like darren said, most of the schools we go to are mostly economic challenged areas. These kids dont have resources a lot of them to get the things they need. My family has been in the business since 1978 i think it was time for wisconsin vision to give back a little bit. So since 2010, we came up with this program and, to give back to the community and working with the teachers association, been a real success and these kids, oh, my god if youee rll a. Weha ly chs absolutelon 5de whe wehenog opportunities, but changes her staff its pretty aweso. Wts the biggest reward i think so. Nowing you have ch . Think its aittle bitf bo. Thing is about giving back a helping out where there is a need and wahing ts faces its etty exciting. I sf i watching and they are . Wondering ifsc b in tt some point to be screened or whever they can always contact your website. I know that the wisconsin vision. Com. Seee life is your mto which i think is so cl. Even just watchin that video its so movin t see because of thoseids once they can truly see you just think about all of the thing that kids read be lifcae thei has been changed. What was fun with the yng lady you showed is that that was captured realtime. That was a real experience, at that moment. So, that says it all. T d i haveadn that he put themn and just taken them off and they are like woe. And then they put and . N they are like wow this is pretty good. Because you have no clue wt you . A not seeing until you see it and brings is such a big dea thanks smuch being here. Its a great thing you are doing. Were going to keepng. Goi ion. Oo. Whaeall need about cold and flu season. Right after the brengac well tell you about a local group dedicated to feeding welcome back to the Morning Blend. On fridays some kids take home more in their backpacks than just homework. They take home food so that they can get through the weekend when many go hungry. It is part of a program to feed elementary age kid who is rely on federal have school lunch. Blessings in a backpack is a charity that mobilizes communities to provide food on theeekend because studies show that kids do better on tests of if they have enough to eat. It makes sense. Absolutely. Regina estrada is the Program Manager of the waukesha branchof lein in backpack and mary garciavelez is the principal at waukesha. I thin ls talef b w chapter the running at waukesh tal a little bit about the need in schools. I think molly touched on that fact that so many kid who are on supplemental food programs they get it during the week, but they go home and im sure you guys see that as a big portion of the problem. How real is that issue . Bout it in Waukesha County alone, we there are 4600 kids from k through 5 that arey agi on the federal fe l program and that is in Waukesha County the second most affluent county in wisconsin. There are chapters throughout the state. There is one that just recently forest one in wausau and the its not diminishing there is more and more need for that. I think its a fttenorgo need. Can i see being associated witht meals during the sch day. They are fed and havtion nutrieo thugh their sool day. Youont think aboheekenhewebj i dont know if it i care of. K bu w that there is cuty i tvels od . K . J . Th is m . . . . or if its agiving adjunct to what the momsraran pt works either way. How do you that gets a backpack and the od to bri home . Program. We dont identify it. Will let mary talk about it. We know the kids that can receive free break lunch during the school day. Is it a lot of kids . The percentage varies from school to school. In our school it is between 50 and 60 . Wow. Halfhe kids . Yes. Yes. S those are the same kids that can receive this food t weekend which is just kind of that extra sement over the weekend if they dont have anything or if they do have food, it ges them little bit of extra wthe need. Im socked. Shocked. Are shocked because we have 50 he n iee a bec i thought when you bring this i think it is wonderful, but i think about oh, these kid who is get the lunch fo what looks like a lunch for the weekend. I think they embarrassed and is it just a small select few practivel. Les l tk about itn o u anxale here o wha might be . G sent home with a chid wh qualifies forke it includes fruit. It is fruit salad, apple sauce, its a beef aroini, mac and cheese, instant oatmeal, nutri grai we give it to the classroom. We dont know who gets it. We give it andut then sometimes the teachers are out right away. We see the kids going and getting the nutri grain bar for their snack because these are the same kids that dont have knocks snacks in their bags. That helps the teachers too because in many cases they are bringing the snacks for the students as well. I was on free lunches growing up. School. It was a big deal. To be able to bring food like this home for the weekend, the things you could just fill in the cracks with. Like you said really, would make a difference. Where does the money come from because i think a lot of people wonder well can theyel ho bei . Haior . So we, rely onp donions. We people are ver generous. People in the community hr about it and they do donate money. Some peoe do food drive grants from a different variety of people. And, we have a bigundrair and it isinthishi s w reallyerosito . Y of our spons to sponsor the program, sponsor the galand come. Well have det detai in one second. I wanted to ask you as a handing out these bags, but you see it. What do, do the kids need it . Are they excited what is your sense . Why say the kids are excited when they are getting it. T fortr eihat day for a snack, they may bring it the next week th alsonow they have asnack or ttle b of extra food over the weekend. So the kids are appreciative and the think the families are appreciative its a helping hd for the families. Unbelvable. How can people get involved can they join your wk . Volunteers. We started out with 12 started it there was 12 of us. Now we have about 25 volunteers, n a bkpackbookpa ukesouy can leave a ed. Sage toay they want toet g . Uo ey can gosingin abl backpack waukesha. Org and send rly ey arer there w a gr incono who they do of home brewed beer competition. And they like to give to the local charity. And they said lets give to blessings in a back pack. They said lets start a chapter here. They have become part of us because they researched it and found our website. And we, they have volunteers, and they have funding. And it was a win win. [laughter] thats great awesome. Thats great. Heres the website again so people can learn more or get involved blessings in pack in Waukesha County. Thanks for being here ladies. Thank you very much. Thank you so much. All right still ahead busting myths of col and flu season. We can tell you how to get rid of unwanted fat. Lcomeitslenentattieduc process that is requires no surgery . N nown time and i treatment]k moore withre dlsndefore workuot advtage ofhis produre c that it hns in 35 minutes and iter plain how itorks d onlspproh to freeze your fat cells. Were actually freezing the fat cells to the point they can no longurvive . Uryood naturally eliminate through your urine and sweat. I am so used to saying it is a 60 minute treatment, but w minutes so can you treat twice as much areas in half the time. What makes it so different between doing it for 60 minutes andoing it for 35 minutes. They were ableo do a of research to condense the time by 25 minutes, so the temperature is a little bit cooler by 1 degree. Freeze the fat a little bit quicker, but faster and then the way that they shaped the dome is a little bit more technologically savvy to treatment. People wonder how do you freeze the fat and not damage other tissues around it . They have done a lot of research to target they know that exact temperature at 11 degrees negative cell seeus is enough to freeze the fat cells, but not the surrounding tissues. So there is no surgery involved here. This is topical . Exactly. Okay. Okay. There what do the results show up . Lets say how long is it before you see if it works . Well, think you can see results in as little as three to four weeks. It can take up to four months to see the complete results. So you will continue to see results for up to that four months mark. But, i have seen results in as little as three weeks which great. Were looking at some incredible pictures. Its showing us the different kinds of areas. Were seeing stomach here. The love handles, the flanks. Inner and outer thy. The banana roll right under the buttocks. We have talked about this before. [laughter] we can also treat the chin. Which renee had done and those were some pictures of her. Thats her. Thats y lets see it again go back. Exactly. Shes like smiling. [laughter] yeah so that was after two treatments and that was taken four weeks after my second treatment. Im just really happy with my results. You can really see how it really defines that like curve in your jaw line and you know just really smooths everything out. And heres the thing about you know this area under the chin and a lot of other areas we and all of these cute names for places that arent so cute, but the thing is the diet and exercise, i mean, especially if you have had kids not that i would know, but you cant diet and exercise youre not going to get rid of fat in these areas this is soer targeted at that fat that itslmost impossible. Truly its almost impossible to get rid of. It is. And thats what is awesome about this. We aredf even dads that dont have a lost free time so this reduced treatment is fantastic for them. Yeah its permanent. It is permanent. The reduction, so the people know what to expect is about how much . 20 to 25 reduction after every application so its really important to create realistic expectationses on what the client is really looking for and their goal. Some might want it for the reduction. We put the applicator on two or three months post their first treatment and they have a 50 happy. Are most people a good candidate . Yeah. I mean if you can pinch it we can treat it. Thats our slogan between the clinic. I love it. Have you this cool advantage event coming up tomorrow going on in burlington. You need to rsvp. Tis the season for coughing and sneezing so how do you try to avoid being part of the dr. Keri peterson is a regular tributer to the today show and Board Certified in internal medicine. Were ready to solve some of our cold and flu mysteries good morning to you doctor. Good morning thank you so much for having me. Thanks for joining us. This time of year we want something to fix anytime we get sick. Lets breakdown because you have three tips to start with to keep us healthy and through this cold and flu season. Where do you want to start . Well the three most important tips are number one, washr hands regularly for a full 20 seconds with soap and water. Number two, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth because thats how we spread germs to ourself and get your flu shot. I think its so tough because you know, im a nail biter so im often you know have my fingers around my face and i think especially kids too, you know we do those things and we do get sick. Alleviate those sympms and is chicken noodle well there is no cure for the cold or the flu. But there are certain things you can do to alleviate symptoms and yes chicken noodle soup is one of them. It has Antioxidant Properties which help boost your immune system and hydrates well. The next tip is get plenty of rest. If you have a sore throat use saltwater goggles and with a fever use a cold damp wash use a hu humidifier. The flu virus is said to thrive in dry environments. If you keep humidity in your home, using Something Like a vicks humidifier can help reduce the survival of the flu virus in your house. Is there a difference between cool and warm mist humidifiers . There is no difference its really just a matter of preference. Okay thats great. How about in terms of keeping we saw some imagery of a child that is sick. When do we know when we should keep them home from school . Well there are three questions as a parent you should ask, the first is does my kid have a fever . And if they have a temperature of 101 or more, then you should keep them home. So the first step in gauging what to do is taking their temperature. I work with braun they have the ear it is very accurate in the ear canal because it is very close to the ear drum which shares the same blood supply as the brains temperature control center. The next question to ask is, is my child able to engage in class . If they are not you should keep them home. There is no purpose they wont be able to learn or play. Lastly are they contagious . If so dont send them to school. I think thats a good rule for adults too. You know when we think about going to work or staying home, what is the biggest cold and flu myth you often see people believing . I would say it is that people think antibiotics kill colds and flu and they dont. They only kill bacteria and colds and flu are viruses. Question for you on the chicken noodle soup because this is something i always like when im sick it is comforting because i always had it as a child too. Does the chicken noodle soup matter if it is homemade or out of a can . It doesnt matter actually. Its been studied and both have benefits. Thats great. That makes my day. Thank you. [laughter] little easier. Yes. Is there anything you want to leave us with about cold and flu season that might be a nice tip or last thought . Well i do advice everyone to get your flu shot. One of the myths is the flu shot can cause the flu i promise you it cannot. Schedule that appointment and you can learn more at vicks joining us doctor. That was reay great information. Thank you.
