I love how we pick that madonna song. [laughter] the holiest song on the radio. [laughter] first up today, two guys who are both very familiar with being in the spotlight in their profession you could say they are both rock stars, but not the kind you expect. On sundays they wear robes and joining us pastor bill knapp from Fox Point Lutheran Church. One of the largest of its kind in the state with more than 2300 members. Molly being one of them. We also have father tim copastor of seven different churches. Many people go online to find out where he is preaching. Recently milwaukee magazine featured father tim for the october cover story. The article is called father tim whats up guys. Tiffany has seen you preach. I will go online to see where you are at. Typically i will go when you are at old st. Marys. They call them groupies in milwaukee magazine. People that follow you wherever you go. I call them friends. Pill and i were bill and i were just having a nice conversation in the green room. Did you know each other . No. Isnt it true that people sometimes have said that you remind them of father tim. N father tim . I used to be in the north shore at whitefish bay. Its funny you havent met because you are both so popular. [laughter] we decided we would like a show on tmj. We feel this is an audition for that show. [laughter] lets talk about going out and about in public. You wear a collar you dont. Why dont you wear a collar people wonder about that . I just usually wear them on funerals, weddings, sunday mornings. I feel like people know who i am see i dont need to. I do because it limits the wardrobe choices which is great i dont have to think in the morning, but also it gets me into stuff without people asking. [laughter] free tickets. Free coffee. Appeal for discounts, but you know, one of the things like if you want to go into the hospital nobody is going to ask you why are you going or where you are going. For a lot of people in our tradition, but also the lutheran tradition its a sign of comfort. Its a sign of a person saying im here and im with you and i care. We found this study that came religious sectors. So i want you to talk about your past. Because i think its very fascinating when you both decided that you wanted to live a life of faith. I think the proper phrase for that would be is not are you happy because what you do, its more importantly to say you do what you do because youre happy . I think, i think for me, the evolution of a vocation or realize this is me and it makes me happy which makes me want to respond to gods grace by want to do more and for others. Instead of being in the plus column so i can be loved its quite the opposite. You went to the seminary when you were 13 . Im a lifer. Were your parents happy about your choice did they want you to a peace . They want you to be a priest . God rest their souls they arent with us anymore. I was a bar tender and waiter thats where i learned to do confessions. Your parents owned a bar. My parents owned a bar from the time i was in first grade to when i was in high school. Im sure pastor bil acknowledge, part of the thing is you dont come to a point where all of the sudden you say this is my life and this is what im going to do its an evolution. You accident know you didnt know until you were 17. You felt a calling . My dad hated the fact i was going to be a pastor. Didnt want me to do it. He was the ceo of a bank. When i told him i was expecting this joy and support and love youre not going to live in the lifestyle you are accustomed to. Not the kind of 401 k he was hoping for. No. But s the people we work with and the lives we change and the hearts we open up it makes it exciting and fun so we love it. Looking at pictures of your life we have a lot of you with your kids packers games you started running a number of years ago lost a whole lot of weight. I know a lot of people at church were talking about that for a while. They were where as father tim you took a vow, you are not married, dont have kids, those are two different lifestyles. Both preaching, but two very different choices. I think its like a great symphony were all playing different instruments. In the whole of it, bill and i are really spiritual cousins lutherans and catholics we try to send out the message that we create something beautiful and as st. Paul tells us the body has many padts, but it all comes together in an organic whole. Even though were very different were very much alike because were part of the same body which for us at least is the body of christ. Why do you think people like you so much . I would love to know, i know why i like your sermons, but i want to know why you guys think . You know, for me, were rea were every day people. And we love people. Part of it is our authenticity. I am what you see. I think piety is a good thing and devotion is a good thing, but i think once in a while people want to laugh. Also, its interesting in the clerical state they want you to be one with them, but also represent the other. Right. I think its that accessibility that makes you done when tiff asked you that question you should have said you tell me why do you like me so much . Yeah you tell us why do you like us so much . Heres what i think i think a big part of it and this might be oversimplifying it. Turn it on us. All right well tell you why we like you. You both have a sense of humor. Thats not the only reason, but what is funny i pulled up a couple of examples, father tim, i remember reading well first of all, i think the accessibility you were drinking margaritas and dancing at a Destination Wedding and people loved that. Speaking of the humor you said something about fishing once you said i caught a what size northern was it . 40inch northern. A 40inch northern and you said believe me . I swear to god. [laughter] i think the funny thing is also people dont want just the comic relief, but thats an entrance in. They dont like it when religion becomes oppressive or mean or make you feel guilty. They want what we believe our founder at least told us, is i have come that you might have life and might have it to the full which means the holier life instead of like you have your sunday morning component and the rest of the week. Now its all one its us. Its got to be accessible. Thats part of what were trying to make it has to be fun. Jesus had fun he laughed. Sometimes people in faith are so serious about everything and its like lighten up. Life life is fun. Enjoy it. You said on social media, is it wrong to feel the goodness of god in a soleys burger and youre on social media youre on facebook. Have you eaten that . Oh. Its fantastic. Im not sayy that a soleys burger is going to save your soul im just saying you can feel the love of god in that burger. You have kopps, leones custard is a sign of gods existence. That is so true. Especially being a catholic its a really tough time to be a catholic. Its a tough time in the religion. You acknowledge that, you talk about it in your sermons you dont shy away from it. Youre very accepting of all preferences and lifestyles and i think thats one of the things that so many people are drawn to because you have been pushed so far away from religion and from the church because of those things. I would like to know what do you feel is the hardest part of your job . Is it maintaining that hers how the world has evolved and that sort of change that has taken place or how do you feel . What is the hardest part of your job . I dont think thats our hardest part. I think our faith is in everybodys life no matter what part it is. I think its peoples pain. The sadness and brokenness. That will always be the sense and well always try to breech into brokenness to help them dying. People who are sad, depressed whose children die. Whatever it is and peoples lives get broken and thats the hardest part, but also the most rewarding part because we help lift them up we help god fill them up, lift them from where they are. The hardest part of my job is toster people instead of always looking inward begin more and more to look outward. We have a lot of problems in the city, in the country and the world, so obviously, as pastors were pastily sensitive to peoples n problems, but also, communal problems. What are we going to do about poverty, what are we going to do about racism, what are we going to do about being a more Inclusive Society in which we can all Work Together with the common good. Thats the big thing the common good. How to deal with people who begin the religious experience individually, but also realize that the real call to all of this is community. Its filling them up and then pushing them out. Exactly. Thats a good point. Thats it exactly. Questions weve got to get at because we only have a couple minutes left. I just wanted to say. Arent we on for the rest of the morning . I thought it was the rest of the morning. I wish. The least happy careers were telemarketers and bartenders. [laughter] really i want to be a bartender. [laughter] you know i always say, were in sales not production. Its how you you are both extroverts. Plus its how you present. We work for a great boss and the product is great. All we got to middle person. Right. Heres the rapid fire would you rather be good looking or famous . I would rather be holy. You cant choose that. Okay. I guess, um, i would rather people say you dople ganger alert look like a Young Elton John is that okay with you . I dont care what they say, i dont get that, but you know, i guess, and you look like every irishman anyone has ever seen. They say we have no idea, but you look like someone i know. Famous or good looking . Famous. You know its going to be a good day when . Where when i turn on the Morning Blend show. Yeah baby. [laughter] im finished. The funniest thing someone ever said to me while i was preaching or about my preaching was . I had someone who said to me and it was i wont tell the venue all of the yelled out she didnt know what we were doing she said now your homily is a complete waste of time. That was a tough one. Its okay you will get them next week. [laughter] thats awesome. Is god a packers fan . [laughter] oh. I think, in terms of the way we deal with god, youre going into a whole thing on this really . [laughter] probably bourbon. [laughter] favorite junk food . You like that. Bourbon. Yeah. [laughter] junk food, chips, nachos. Would you rather be funny or smart . I think i would rather be smart. Yeah . I would rather be funny. [laughter] introvert or extrovert . Im an extrovert. Im right in the middle. Im kind like to take time away. Im extrovert, but also a little introvert. Can people find you online, Fox Point Lutheran Church has a website. Fox point church. Org. Were soon going to have our own show. Stay tuned for our show. Do you say bless you when someone sneezes . Always. I even give the gesture. [laughter] go to our Facebook Page do you always say bless you when someone sneezes cuz you should. Because you got to. Come back anytime. You guys are awesome. 3d isnt just for the movies anymore. Why its such an important tool in the detection of Breast Cancer. Also people love to dress up their pets for halloween, but is it safe . All my friends do. Coming up a special program that has that friend shop for you welcome back to the Morning Blend where were transforming your health with columbia st. Marys part of ascension. Roughly one in eight women born in the United States will get Breast Cancer at some point. The good news is many women can survive if found and treated early. October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the National Spotlight puts focus on the importance of mammograms in screening. Here with more about the value of the mammogram is dr. Craig schulz. Great to see you. Thank you so much. An important month for us to talk about surprising that one in eight will get Breast Cancer at some point. Thats a lot. You know if youre with a small group of friends you can count on the fact one of you will be touched by it. It is a very common disease. This year alone, there will be about 250,000 women diagnosed with invasive Breast Cancer. Another 60,000 with preinnovative Breast Cancer. It is a big problem. About 40,000 women will die of their breast c so its a lot of women, but, thankfully over the years, since about 1990, the number of women dying of Breast Cancer continues to go down on a annual basis and most importantly, women in their 40s and 50s who typically have a very invasive aggressive Breast Cancer typically are living longer and being cured of their disease. So all good news. Uhhuh. And the reasons they are living longer is because were finding it earlier right . Technology. Obviously selfbreast exams at home are very important. But 3d and 2d mammograms are really the technology that has changed a lot of detection correct . Absolutely. Early detection does make a difference. Especially in young women. Women in their 40s and 50s diagnosed early because of Early Detection actually have a better outcome. And, the reason for that is obviously mammography. Mammography has taken a lot technological advances over the last few years. And, columbia st. Marys we went in full bore to 3d mammogram about two years ago. The reason we did that because 2d is very good, but 3d can diagnose women earlier, smaller lesions and with a much greater accuracy and not necessarily putting women through additional biopsies. The false positive rate of a 3d are really cancer not something else. So we dont have to biopsy women unnecessarily. What are the steps if someone has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer . We at columbia st. Marys about 7 or 8 years developed a Multidisciplinary Team of Breast Cancer for our women and men to come into our clinics, they see a team. So if a lady goes in or a man goes in with a lump ie they detect that themselves for a screening mammogram and find something they usually go through some sort of biopsy with an ultrasound or mammography unit, a small needle is inserted into the breast lump and the sample is removed. Once that happens, we have a team of nurse navigators for our Breast Cancer patients that become really the conduit for our patients for all of their care. They do a fantastic job. They are really the buddies for the patients and for some women they have an amazing support. Those patients, then are brought into our conferences, weekly we have several breast conferences where we talk about all of the new Breast Cancer diagnosises at columbia st. Marys. All of the experts are there. We even have support staff, physical therapists, social workers, counselors and the like. We all develop a plan for our patient and we see them in clinic and they meet with all of the doctors eve us go to them. They dont go from point a to point b to point c. They sit in a room and we all go to them. Over a two hour period women will meet their specialist, meet their support staff and will develop a plan. There may be more things we need to find out about cancer, but usually they have a plan when they leave us. I think that Team Approach is so important. Are there other symptoms women can beware of besides finding a lump . The lump is the most common and interestingly you made a selfexamination, that is becoming less recommended. Really . What is really important though is a woman should know her breasts. That sounds kind of odd to say that, but, if you know what your breast texture is like, you know just how your breast feels you might find an abnormality. So a palpable mass. Your nipple may change, bloody discharge, thickening of the skin. Breast my pull in change in size. We even have had women of childbearing aimin age that thed not breast feed out of one of the breasts the breast with the cancer in it. There are lots of Different Things women can look for. How often should you have a mammogram the age and then the frequency . Thats a very loaded question. I know. Over the years it has changed and it continues to change. A few years ago there was the United States Preventive Task force came out with mammogram of completely different. Very radical change than what we normally had done. And, about six months to a year later things really kind of changed back and weve kind of come up with different recommendations. So primarily, and can you go to different websites or different organizations and get different recommendations, but the American Cancer Society pretty much recommends a woman to start a mammogram about age 40 if she is motivated to do so, certainly by age 45. Annual after 55, every other year if a woman is comfortable with that or annually if they are not comfortable with every other year. I think their recommendations should just be he was year especially so insurance pays for it. But, i think even starting at 35 because sometimes i think the baseline just like Prostate Cancer where the baseline is so important. But im not a doctor. Women are at higher risk at 30yearsold are family history, genetic risks. Have a mammogram and mri because they are much more to a womans imaging especially when younger women have very dense breasts and very difficult to see things from a mammogram. Great information. Important for you to stay up to date especially here in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can contact columbia st. Marys at columbia st. Marys. Org to find a physician near you. 414332 docs is the phone number. Thanks for being her absolutely. Still ahead a super easy way to stay on top of the latest fall fashions. And stressing your pets for halloween. Welcome back to the Morning Blend wiur faces and costume visitors are a big part of halloween that can be stressful for some dogs. I know you dont do breeds. He really is a sweet dog and settles right in. Totally is a people dog. He loves to be around people and hang out. He is super cute. Would he be good with kids do you think . I think whatever home he is lucky enough to enter, i think he is going to be hanging out with them all the time whether young or old. I think he is going to totally enjoy them because he really does, he does love to snuggle in. I think he would be delightful with kids. I can imagine them being little nervous as many dogs are of costumes. Yes. How do you feel about Halloween Costumes for pets because some really like it. They dont mind wearing clothes because they have always done it. A lot of little dogs get dressed in coats in the winter to keep them warm. It really depends on the dog and, know your dog if they dont mind a costume. Couple things to keep in mind though are [laughter] couple things to keep in mind make sure the costume does not constrict breathing. Make sure they can see and hear and it doesnt have danglers they might chew off and eat. Some dogs dont mind at all others prefer not to have a costume on. If thats the case you can always go with a little festive bandana like timber is wearing which is totally cute. That is cute. Some of the outfits are so awesome. Im going to make a cutest costume for a dog is to dress them up like a rabbit. How did you know . [laughter] i think we had that once didnt they . Or a rabbit dressed up like something else. I love it when animals are dressed up like another animal. I saw one a golden retriever had a lion mane on. Isnt that cute . Such a great idea. It really looks real. I know it does. So adorable. Milwaukee so you got to be a little careful. Like this is not the year to dress up like a clown for sure. Exactly. [laughter] yes dont dress like a clown. For sure. What about candy. Thats one thing people are getting candy sometimes the candy falls with the kids how dangerous is it for a pet . Glitz always a no no. There are certain candies certain chocolates dark chocolate, raisins, zilatol an artificial sweetener found in a lot of gum that is extremely toxic to animals i have never known a dog to unwrap a lolly pop and eat it. They eat the wrapper with it. The sticks, that go with lolly pops its just a no no. There are plenty of youre getting a facial. I know i love it. There are plenty of dog treats that are appropriate. So the candy is very dangerous. So cute. I know. Thats why your skin is so wonderful right . From dog kisses. You have fun activities at the Wisconsin Humane Society for dogs, people too. We do. We have halloween howell which is always fun. We have been doing that for many years people love it. That is you bring your dog the milwaukee campus is held on october 28, i think its from 7 00 to 8 15 p. M. At our ozaukee campus. Which is really great as the temperatures keep changing from hot to cold, to mild, so for katie we have a sweater address which is a very versatile piece. Can you wear yearround. Here we did it with a utility vest, the military trend is very in for fall. And you can mix and match it with jeans or dresses then the biggest shoe trend right now is the booty. So we did a gray pointed b course black is still very stylish. And then speaking of colors for our next look we have kristen is rocking bright blue, and fall you can wear blight colors too. It is bright colors too. It is very stylish. Here we paired it with a printed skirt for the office and gave her a comfy pointed toe flat so she can go to meetings and not hurting her and on date night she swaps out shoes and is good to go for drinks. For the third look we have claudia also doing the layering trend. Here were playing with texture. Faux fur is huge for the season. She has these jeans which are a big trend right now the coated denim. It gives that luxurious leather feel, but still remains very comfortable because it is jeans and a booty and you notice a Little Leather bottom gives it a Little Something extra. So overall fall is about looking sheik, but still remaining comfortable of these are every day women, they have jobs they have kids and they want to be able to wear things that make sense for their lifestyle. I try to swap in with tea, but both really hurt the color of my teeth. Absolutely. You are eating and drinking so its a two system system, its a two swab system. This is what youre going to do. The first swab is called stain out. It really is a swab like a q tip. Yeah. You swab it on. What this does two things it helps lift the stain first which is a game changing, lift the stain before you whiten and also helps you to rehydrate that enamel. It helps with that teeth sensitivity. A lot of people have trouble with that. Especially with whitening strips or trays. Absolutely. Leave that on for about 2 minutes then you followup with the whitener and you swab it on. You can really get into the nooks and crannies. Youre not covering anything up. Just leaving it exposed. Let it do its job and youre out the door five minutes youre done. With every power swabs kit you get we have something called the stainout. Its a quick stick its like tide for your mouth. [laughter] i love it. So instead of get ago stain on your shirt you get a stain on your teeth and you know where that is. Pop it in your purse, your when i had coffee before the show its an mazing way to whiten and brighten your smile on the road. You have such night white teeth. Thank you. To send us your own photo entry for the picture of the day contest email it to pictures themorningblend. Com. We asked you on face week do you say bless you or god bless you when someone sneezes . A lot of people sneeze multiple times so you keep saying it which i love. Cathy addressed that she said god bless you infity. After the second shes good for the whole day. She allergies. She will do it even to strangers. I think that is great. Michelle said always and i even bless myself. My husband looks at me and says did you just bless yourself. Yeah im so used to saying it.
