True. So it seems like for since the dawn of time you are not supposed to wear white after labor day which seems fashion has changed so much now there is winter white and even fabrics reserved for summer now people can wear all yearround. The other day faye said the only fabric you cant wear is linen. Thats really the only thing in winter. Or even probably fall now. Interesting though, we got this from holly who regularly fills in on the show she sent article about why you shouldnt wear white after labor day. And basically it was just about high society. It was a rule that women who were of high old money, high class, old money knew and so its with a way to distinguish themselves from other women. Yeah. The old money verses new money. They said you would know somebody who came from new money they would be wearing white after labor day. There it was a way to swish it. Its your prerogative if you thought. Prerogative means youre of a certain class or whatever. On the radio this morning they were talking about words that are said incorrectly that drive people nuts one of them was prerogative. And they said they think a lot of people say it wrong because of the song. . . [ music ] . . You got to play that again. . . [ music ] . . Right . Prerogative. Apparently you are supposed to say it prerogative. Prerogative. Thats a tough that was on the radio this morning. It made me wonder about prescription. It is written like prescription. Everyone says here is your perscription. I think a lot of people say this wrong, it is pitcher you mean a picture. Look at this pitcher of us. It drives me nuts when some people say pumkin. Instead of something. That one and the one my mom said wrong as well is warsh. My dad says it like that and his mom said itike that. She said melk too. You no what they say is the hardest to say in the english language . There was a word i couldnt say because the way it is spelled i used to not be able to say it when i would see it written out. People hate when people say sherbert because it is sherbet. The hardest word in the english language to say is sorry. [laughter] ut oh, is that one you often mispronounce. You might not say that one well. That has to be something is there something that annoys you . Sound off on the Facebook Page well read the annoying words. Signs are you happier than you think. These are things that add to or make a person happy. It is like you are happier than you think if you have these things in your life. Family number one. You have a sister. Oh, lies. People who have at least o brother reading this for you, they report better social support, more optimism, better coping abilities. This is in an psychological study. Sisters appear to encourage communication and cohesion in families if you have at least one officer youre in good one sister you are in good shape. You keep souvenirs on display. It reminds you of good times you tend to appreciate your life more. Youre happier and heres what your happiness potential. So if you see a happy picture of yourself like a vacation its like i can get there again because its a reminder of it. Thats a great point. You think about just looking at, im picturing a picture in my place of my mom and i at a wedding were standing out on the balcony and its one of my favorite pictures. Its big in my place and it always reminds me of how great our relationship is and that connection. Thats awesome. And thats a reminder of a visual reminder of it. They also say another thing is that you have two best friends at least two best friends. They say among married adults those what said they had at least two best friends not necessarily including the spouse, were likelier to have better mental well being according to a study. If you have a lot more best friends than two it doesnt up your quotient for happiness. You need outside of your partner you need people to be in your life. People who tend to watch a just not in the morning. The morning makes you happier. Watching the Morning Blend makes you happier. Yes watching the Morning Blend makes you happier. People that exercise just 17 minutes a day just brisk walking or something and you have a healthy love life. Yeah girl. Intimacy is a key contributor to happiness. And then not surprisingly marr more regular contact if you know what i mean. [laughter] not always. Not always. I know some singles who have more regular contact than married. However. Are they happier . Well know. Why change that from intimacy to just affection. I dont think, i think people just need a hug, they need contact. They need someone near them. I dont think it needs to be true intimacy. Contact. Yeah. I dont know. Thats my own theory. Interesting okay. Affection i think is important. They talk about people going around and hugging at people at hospitals. Even a hug from a stranger. You see contact you need human contact. You heal faster. True. All right. Before we heado break did we say our soundoff . Yes. Earlier. I forgot already. The worlds worst memory. Thats what brings you happiness having a bad memory, ps. Up next one of the largest lineups of local films thats right well give you details about the milwaukee short Film Festival and why this year they are featuring great works of welcome back to the Morning Blend. The milwaukee short film local festival by movie maker magazine and it is happening this weekend. Friday and saturday. This year, 35 films over the two day festival will focus on diversity and women in film making. 35 of those are local. Were here with ross bigley and Krystal Hardy to tell us what to welcome back to the show you guys. Thanks for having us. You have a two day festival, 40 some films 35 of which are made locally. There yes. And part of the feature, of some of the local films a lot are made of women. A lot diversity. Lots of woman power this year. What are some of the themes specifically as it relates to women being involved in them . Well, the films range from their involvement either as a producer, writer or director. One film in particular, the good boy was rated and produced by an asianamerican woman in ne nasty, is kind of like a horror film with a feel like Stranger Things just on netflix, it was made by a woman in the u. K. There is venus rising from the undertow made by a local filmmaker here. Many, many more done by women. These are in a producing capacity, writing it or spearheading the project. And you said one of them that mean several have been seen before . Im sorry, that one is kind of feels like that netflix show. Gotcha. There is one called the hodag is that shot in rhinelander . That was shot in wisconsin, but made by new york people. It was written by a woman. Awesome. What do you think is the draw to a short film . A lot of people say why go see something you are only get a little snippet of the story i think it is cool to kind of experience multiple works during a Film Festival. Some people, have a shorter Attention Span so they dont want to sit through a minifeature film, but i think it is good because you get just this small snippet like you said of multiple works by these amazing artists. What is in terms of length, what qualifies as or what is the time limit maybe i should say for a short film . Many different lengths, but ideally we have our cutoff time at 15 minutes. And its becoming more when you are making your short film that 7 minutes to 12 is pretty much the standard running time. Which is very difficult to do by the way. Yes. Absolutely. How many films can you see over the course of two days would you say . What is typical of someone that attends . If you go every day every event about if you wanted to to go for an hour are they running backtoback could you see several in an hour . We have them in programs. The first show is friday at 6 30. Friday night. And that90 minutes to an hour and 40 minutes. Of film and at 9 00 p. M. Is our diversity block which focuses right there 365 on local multicultural filmmakers. The thing i like about short films too i feel like a lot of people who maybe didnt have the funding to make a feature length film can, but yes have this great idea this great story line can do it and create it, on a smaller budget, but still the quality, the acting the story may be very very high quality. Oh, i think with todays equipment, and the people you have in the city here, you can make something that can equal a feature film quality. With v these . You in the past you have had some very famous people involved in the judging of these. Yeah. This year our judges are dick brunert he won best director last year and he is a staff director at the Cartoon Network channel. We have a judge tim that was the Stranger Things. And best wisconsin film winner twice is a judge. Is there also a honoree. A pace setter honoree what is that about if that is an award that goes to someone that has made a significant contribution to the local film making community. And this year honoree is e Kelly Fitz Simmons an entrepreneur here locally and helped out many local filmmakers. Thats awesome you are showcasing so much local great this is happening this weekend. People can go to your website to find out which films are showing and when you can catch them. This friday and saturday, september 9 and 10. You can go to milwaukee independent film society. Org. The films are being shown at comedy sports which is on south first street in milwaukee. And the First Showing the First Program is friday starting at 6 30 right . Wonderful. Great to see you guys. Thanks you guys. Thank you so much. Is helping kids follow their dreams. Up next they turn popular songs into messages of importance. Well meet two young girls with a disorder that effects every day life. If you would like to see more Morning Blend check out the streaming video on our website the Morning Blend. Com. New frontline gold. Welcome back. The Fourth Annual milwaukee rocks for locks benefit morgans ride for alopecia are coming up this weekend. They provide support to wisconsin children who learn they are not alone with this difficult disease. We are here now with josh lang, the event cochair and his daughter kiah and friend ava they both have alopecia. For the past few her friends have made music videos to bring awareness to the effects of alopecia. Heres a sample of their latest one stressed out. [laughter] that is awesome. I love it. Love it. So cool. I want to get to some of those in a second. First just describe a little bit what alopecia is for people who arent familiar with the word . Its an auto immune condition. The way we describe it usually it makes your hair is like allergic to your body. Her white blood cells attack her hair like it is a foreign entity. The range can be small patchy spots to what its the most extreme where it can cause complete hair loss across the body eye lash and eyebrows. How does it affect the health . Sometimes the hair like our eye lashes protect our eyes. She has a few things with that that have come up over the years. One time we were going through a lot of kleenex i was like what is going on . She was like you dont know what it is like if you dont have nose hairs. She is healthy its not mostly a psychological thing. Its very difficult for people to you know with bullying and just coming out of the house and being comfortable so, there is a lot of psychological conditions, but as far as you know her Overall Health her life isnt in danger or anything. There is no cure and no fda approved treatments at this point. So. A lot of people especially when you are young it looks different. Thats what kids notice and will comment on. Comment or are they bullying you at all . There have been at times, but not really for the most part. Good you have good friends. Is it true your teacher shaved his head at the beginning of the school year to look just like you . Yeah. He has a son who has alopecia right . Uhhuh. What did you think about that . That was cool. [laughter] that was cool huh . How did it make you feel . Happy. He did it at school . Yeah. How does he look . Good. He looks good right . [laughter] think that is wonderful. It is. You got a chance to go to washington, d. C. To advocate for research on alopecia. Yup. What was that about . This past july every five years the foundation we do a fundraiser goes to d. C. So we can meet with our lawmakers and tell the story of what is going on with alopecia. We funding for auto immune diseases in general not just alopecia there is multiple diseases. Were working on a bill that would have Insurance Companies contribute 500 a year towards cocainal prosthetics so basically wigs of those are not covered for people with alopecia. No Insurance Coverage for were trying to have it be more considered as a prosthetic. So we had some progress with that. There are people from wisconsin that were open to it. They were more knowledgeable about the issue this year i think that is because we continue to do these things not just us, but other people around the country and shine a light on it. Its starting to be better understood. It was a great reception. We had 500 people looking like ava and kiah on capitol hill walking through the hauls of power it was talk a little bit about the video. You just put this together this summer right . Yeah. Its a new song you stressed out. Do you write the lyrics . Me and my sister, but this one i think i mostly did it. Okay. Okay. Because, what i like about them is it is a serious message, but you use humor in it too. Its like you dont want to just be serious all the time. You want to add fun to it so people can get a laugh out of it to relatable. People can relate to you so much better because its funny and it is cute and its kind of, i think it makes it something that sticks with people that they had remember. Uhhuh. Are there some advances in research . Are there some exciting developments . There have been a few. I cant speak too knowledgeably about that. There are medical trials going on. It is related to all auto immune things. There is still no fda cures, but there is Great Research going on around the country. They are building a database of genetic code to start to piece it together and matching it to other auto immune continues so they are starting to figure out the puzzle a little bit. There has been progress. A long way to go. Coming up. Talk about what will be going on for activities and fun things that day . We have two live bands. Love and kind. We have the Andrew Gillis band. The hit man dj will be there all day long doing the band breaks for the kids area and kiahs corner we have juggles, magic shows, snazzy face painting. Car karaoke. Best trick contest skate all day. We have a big silent auction. A spa is collecting hair donations for childrens hair loss. Are there rules does have to be certain lengths . They are not as strict for this. We raise the money for it, but the hair is going to another one that benefits kids with any kind of medical hair loss not just alopecia or cancer any other it is 8 inches shorter than a lot of other ones. Its a hot more lean lenient ins of dyeing and stuff like that. Thats awesome. Things kickoff there has been morgans ride for alopecia. All of this is happening at milwaukee Harley Davidson this saturday september 10. Can you go to greater mke alopecia. Com to find the full schedule of events. For is at 8 45. Kick stands are up at 10 00. There is a return to event at 1 45 and the rocks for locks schedule goes from 1 00 to 7 00. Yeah they can see it on their website. The auction stuff is online you can see most of the items we have right now and you dont have to necessarily be there if you cant make it. The website. You can also google stressed out, kiah, naf you can see all of her she is starting to build quite a library of videos they have created. Love your videos. Keep it up. And i love your dress today. You look fantastic. Did you guys want to show us your shirt . We brought you shirts. You guys are so nice. Just like your shirt. Thank you. So cool. Thank you. She said oh, i like this a you can wear it to work. Were going to wear it to work and to bed. You got it girl. High five. They gave us emergency printing just could we could have it in time for you. Not this sunday, but next sunday, september 18, the grandville Business Improvement district is holding its Second Annual car, truck and bike entertainment, food truck and carries a special mission too. Joining us is mary hoehne the executive director of the granville bid. Why did you choose a car show to raise money . We chose it because the granville has a lot of car dealers. Its a great place to come look fo greater milwaukee auto auction which is huge every thursday. Were a car heavy area. We thought cars, garnville it went together. What kind of cars will people see . Hot rods, custombuilt cars, vintage cars, corvettes, you name it. Any kind of car that is special, different that people are spending hours polishing right now. Right. I love it its true. Here and there. I think the people who own the cars love going and talking about what they did with the vehicle. Uhhuh. I think thats one of the cool things you get to ask them about restoration and why they loved this particular model or wanted to remaining or show it off. Registration for people who have a car they can still show up that day right . Right. Its mainly an on site registration. It is 10. Registration begins at 8 30. The car show begins at 10 00. We anticipate some people in hurry to get the best spot will be there at 7 15, 7 30. One thing it is a History Lesson or going back in time. Going to a car show reminds you of the car your dad had, the car your grandpa had the car you had your first date in. All of that is brought up in a car show. It is quite entertaining even if youre not a big engine kind of person. Its a great point. I even think about the cars that have been restored amongst our because their father drove it or delivered this in it. I think it really is fun to go to with the family. And there is food trucks there . Well have at least ten food trucks. My favorite kind of truck. We are known for food trucks we do it every monday. Now we have expanded that to our car show once again. Were the only car show with this kind of variety of food. You name it we have it there. Everything from ribs to popcorn to lemonade to bratwurst and then special stuff. Nothing better than a taco truck. There is food, music, entertainment and darryl star bird talking about the people who love cars this is a guy who knows a lot about custom design. Yes he is an icon in the industry. If you are into custom cars, he is the builder and designer of custom hot rods. Way back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. So, he is making his first visit to milwaukee in probably 30 people who collected models. A lot of cars he designed were turned into models can you build yourself. So, people who are into modeling would love to meet darryl star bird he is going to be there and going to judge the best car and will be available for autographs. You can bring in your little model for him to autograph . You can bring anything in. It is going to be great because this is another visit down memory lane for an awful lot of people. This adds something to our car show for spectators in particular. Where do the proceeds go all of the money raised for granville. The proceeds go to our Economic Development corps. Our mission is to combine our businesses with the youth in the neighborhood. We work on internships, apprentice ships. Trying to send kids to camps to try to give kids in the neighborhood an experience that will help them as they enter the job market and they can discover there are wonderful jobs out there because another thing bridge that gap between the kids, and our businesses. Yeah. Thats wonderful. Neat event. What a fun way to do it. So much going on for everybody to enjoy which is fantastic. It is the car truck and bike spectacular not this weekend, but next weekend sunday september 18 from 10 00 in the morning until 3 00 p. M. On 76th street between good hope road and bradley road. You can find out more about what is going on by visiting granville business. Org. Be sure to check out weve had the show and sample some of their food. What a fun way to have lunch while are you out there and enjoy it with the family and if you are a car enthusiast, you have to go. Exactly. Well be giving out 60 trophies so thats going to be the trophy event will be really great. We have music you can hear from one end of the car show to the other. Thanks mary. Really nice to see you. Thank you much. Still ahead a disease where parents have a 50 chance of passing it to their children. Most popular ways of getting rid of unwanted fat and they keep improving it. It has become super popular and they are finding ways to make it better. We are joined by katelyn igielski a cool sculpting expert and coordinator at quintessa aesthetic. Excited to see you again. This seems to be all the rage. It is. Everybody cant stop talking about it. How does it work . It freezes the fat cells on the body so in different target areas you want to put the applicator on will actually freeze the fat cells so they are body left your vessels in the area. What is your expertise what brought you to quintessa aesthetic and loving cool sculpting . I really wanted to treat my patients circle around because i wanted we have surgical options with dr. Campbell and nonsurgical with the cool sculpting. I really wanted to have that full circle affect and be able to treat my patients all around. Are the results immediate do you notice right away . Treatment, but up to 12 weeks after. It is 1 to 3 month period where they really notice great results. Is it just one treatment you get those kind of results . Most people will do 1 to 2 treatments. Every treatment you do will be about 20 to 25 reduction in the area. Depending on how much reduction you want some people do 1 to 2 treatments. Wow. I want that stomach on the bottom. [laughter] exactly me too. I mean that was a nice little display. That is really the results yup. Every time people always get results every time and the at stettic world it is hit or miss with treatments sometimes they do really well and sometimes they are just so so. And this delivers those results every single time. Exactly whati what areas canu treat and what does quintessa aesthetic offer that is different than other placeses. Thats what is new the time frame. It used to be one hour. Now it is . 35 minutes with this applicator. What areas are you able to treat . Here were showing arms thats an area we havent talked much about it seems like. We can do pretty much any area where you can pinch and inch. There is a lot of those areas. [laughter] how does the consultation process go . They come in andt me. They will meet with me well assess the body areas that bother them. And then well go from there and what areas we want to treat first. Uhhuh. How many sessions do most people need and then what kinds of results are they really seeing . Typically for an abdomen just a general area it is 2 to 4 treatments to cover the whole abdomen then they are 35 minutes each. They can be in and out in a couple hours. What is happening at your cool advantage event that is what can people see or experience as part of that . Well have live demonstrations with the applicators. You will subcomm see me apply ia patient and ask the patient questions. Well have hors de vours and wine and theyll be able to walk around and take a look at the place and the applicators and well have consultations as well. They will be able to get assessed. Were going to have some special event pricing and then were going to be having them just kind of enjoy the night. Uhhuh. One thing im impressed with a procedure when the people talking about it have done it themselves and you have done cool sculpting too. Yes i have treated my abdomen. And how were your results. They are fantastic really great. Im sure that personal experience. For you is it something that hurts or people can tolerate . It its not that painful at all. It just fools like a little bruise afterwards and most people cant see they had activities and no one knows they had anything done then they are just waiting for results. That is cool. Once that fat is eliminated is it permanent . It is. We all are born with a certain amount of fat cells. They just get larger as you gain weight. You just have fewer fat cells so they cannot come back. Thats cool i like that. And the result the full effect is usually about . 2 to 3 month period. 2 to 3 months. The event you were talking about month. Can you put it on your calendar make sure to rsvp. Wednesday, september 28. Its the quintessa aesthetic cool advantage event. It is football season thats not why were showing you this pigskin. After the break the shocking comparison that will help explain one of the most common genetic lifth welcome back too the Morning Blend. Normally the Bayshore Town Center is full of shoppers looker not latest trends, but one week from sunday it will be filled with people money for a lifethreatening disease. Joining us is jacque english and jeff nelson from the pkd foundation. Im not real familiar with pkd. I think a hot of people arent sure what it is. What exactly is it for pkd . Polly sistic kidney disease, is genetic disease it is one of the most common lifethreatening genetic diseases there are. Essentially what happens your filled cysts and it causes kidney failure. Both of you have the disease. You are already on a transplant waiting list right . Im on three transplant lists. I started dialysis in november of 2013. Okay. So that was three years ago. So, what happens, how does the disease progress to the point where you need dialysis and a transplant in your case . Everyone has a different trajectory when it comes to that kidney disease. And how fast it progresses. Some people have it may not develop complications until they are in their 60s. But my case i developed it when i was 52. So, but most people develop it in their 50s thats the average. Okay. So it is genetic right . It is. Thats who would be affected. Can you get it if somebody in your family line doesnt have it . There is, there are incidents of getting pkd. There finding people are having a genetic mutation and having a disease without any Family History so it is possible. There is a strong genetic link. You have two daughters . I do i have two daughters. Do you test them or is there a way to know if either one may not have pkd . There are tests out there. My daughters oldest is 2 years old and the other is 18 months. The complication dont happen until they are much older so our hope is there will be a treatment or cure by the time they need it. Do you have children . I have two adult boys, but they were adopted so they wont have it. I would think that you know, that is a difficult part of it is thinking about that. You seem very young. Have you experienced any of the symptoms of it yet . Which is treated with medication right now that is usually one of the first signs of polly sistic kidney disease. And at this point i monitor my blood work and i see my doctor and i drink lots of water and try to stay healthy and so far, so good. What is the example of the football for . Well the thing is that you know normally your kidney would be about this size. Hold that up a little bit. Thats a healthy kidney. And my kidney is year for a ct scan my kidney on my left side, one was removed for the previous transplant my left kidney is 12 inches by 5 inches. This is an nfl football this is 9 1 2 by 5 inches i have a kidney inside of me that is this big. When hi both of them i was quite big. I looked like jackie probably did three months ago when she was pregnant. Literally. You see see them in the front arent kidneys in the back . Touching in the middle and pushing out the sides it was not a pretty sight. So you could see them and feel them. You could feel them and touch them. The doctors would feel and pal pate the cy sts. Was it painful . They are painful. I was on pain medication for a long time too to try to alleviate some of that pain. Another question, are kidney stones related to pkd . Or are those two separate issues i havent heard, but that, but if you have k kidney stones that would not be a person that would be good for a transplant. It seems like there is an immediate maybe this is stating the obvious immediate need for a cure. And donors for transplants. Absolutely. And i was in a Clinical Study at i was in study 7 years it just didnt work for me, but it has worked for others i know one woman that it works very well for so there is hope. You have one kidney now. We all have two. Thats something i said earlier i said dont we all have two and you only need one so you can be a living donor. You can share your spare. [laughter] exactly. Yeah. So you can have a living donation and they actually tend to be more successful in a loer little longer than other kidneys. Well you have this walk coming up and it is sunday the 18th. People can participate, learn more about pkd. It is at bayshore as we mentioned before. It is going to be filled with not shoppers, but walkers raising money for pkd. Registration is at 8 30. The walk is at 10 00 you can learn more and recommendster at their website walk for pkd. Org. Im sure you can learn about being a donor and participate in the local chapter. Heres the information on the advantage. Sunday, september 18, at bayshore. Thanks for being here you guys. You also have a meeting i just noticed too. One of them is tonight right . 6 30.
