Well, listen it was bad enough that it was in vain for raul, but oh how much worse when you what christ had done. You know ive been stressing that for the last several months. What a waste, when christ has already accomplished everything that needs to be done for every human being. And then they walk it under foot. Go on their merry way, totally unconcerned and indifferent and the blood of christ is accounted as nothing. Oh, indeed it was in vain for those. For those of us who believe of course, it wasnt. All right, so he says, i am afraid lest i have bestowed upon you labor in vain. Now look at verse 12 where once again, he says almost identical what he said to the corinthians and the philippians. Brethren i beseech you. Now hes not commanding. See thats not grace. He never says by commandment, but he says, be as i am. Now he was an apostle, of course he was. But, was he beyond the reach of the ordinary believer . No. No, he was a sinner saved by grace, just like you and i. And so he says, be as i am for i am as you are. See . He didnt put himself above the rank and file. He said, im nothing more than a sinner saved by grace like the rest of you. Oh, granted these galatians had come out of paganism. But what had raul come out of . Judaism. And in the final analysis, how much difference was there . None. None. They were all, as he says in romans chapter 3, they are all without god. They are all on their own way. And the fear of god was with none of them. All right, so he says, you have not injured me. They i want to come back to what he says early on. Turn with me to i corinthians chapter 4. A lot of people i suppose either dont know its in their bible or if they do know it they dont like the fact that it is. But in i corinthians chapter 4 verse 16. I corinthians chapter 4 verse 16 and hes got a couple of others in the corinthians that say almost word for word the same thing but we wont try and take time to look them all up. But i just want to take a scattering so that you see that he wrote it to all of his churches. That they were to follow his example. Now today, most people say, well follow jesus. Thats not what paul writes. Paul says, that were to following him because who is he llowing . Hes following the ascended christ see . Hes following the ascended christ and we follow paul. Have you got i corinthians 4 verse 16 . Wherefore he said i beg of you, he cant command it but he says . I beseech you, be ye followers of me. See how plain that is . Be ye followers of me and for this cause i have sent unto you timothy, my beloved son and that he might bring you into remembrance of my ways. Because after all, where did timothy learn what he had . From paul. And so everything is going out from this one apostle. Barnabas learned everything he had, silas learned everything he had, timothy, titus, epaphroditus and all of these friends and fellow laborers had all learned it from the apostle paul and so he says, be followers of me. And bring into remembrance verse 17 my ways which be in christ in every assembly. All right, now flip all the way forward if you will to philippians. Philippians, galatians, ephesians, philippians, the last chapter i think it is. Philippians chapter 4, no chapter 3. Philippians chapter 3. Philippians chapter 3 verse 17. Philippians chapter 3 verse 17, brethren. Now of course he had a real warm place in his heart for the philippians, didnt he . Not a word of criticism in this letter. And they had loved the apostle so much and i think mostly because he nearly went into physical death in philippi and they nursed him back to strength. And so he has a warm spot in his heart for but look what he says, brethren be followers verse17 n . Brethren be followers together of me and mark them who walk so as you have us himself and of course his timothy and titus and so forth . And that you have us for an example. Because they had experienced gods saving grace and they had suffered for the sake of the gospel and they had given up so much for the gospel and so raul says, be willing to follow me for the sake of the gospel. All right, now then, as you come back to galatians 4 for just a second and then were going to go back to ii corinthians, so he says, im afraid of you verse 11 and 12, repeating it now. Galatians 4 1112 . I have bestowed upon you labor in vain. I beseech you, be as i am, for i am as you are; you have not injured me at all. You know how that through infirmities of the flesh i preached the gospel unto you at the first. And my testing which is a better word than temptation . And my testing which was in my flesh, you did not despise nor rejected; but you received me as an angel of god, even as christ jesus. So they immediately recognized that the apostle was the emissary of christ. All right, come back with me to ii corinthians. We saw this and i emphasized it in our corinthian study, but i dont want you to forget it. Oh, iont want you to forget this. Because as i said in a earlier castigated. He is, what should i say . Rejected. And he is ridiculed many times, but oh look what he says. Ii corinthians chapter 11 and verse 5. And this theme runs all the way through his epistles. That this is why he is the major writer of the new testament. You know, somebody sent me, i think it was a lady here in tulsa, in fact al, i think it was your wife betty, sent me an article that substantiated what ive always claimed, that luke was a jew. And ive always put it on the idea that when paul said that israel was more, what shall i say . They were more advantageous than any other group of people because unto them were committed the word of god. Well, ive always used that verse as the basis for have been a jew because otherwise, paul couldnt have written that. Because when you take the gospel of luke and the book of acts that is a goodly portion again of the new testament. And luke wrote them both. Well, if luke was a gentile, then paul could not have rightly written by inspiration in rans 2, what profit then hath the circumcion . Much, every way, because unto them were committed the word of god. and so this article just substantiated and i was so thrilled to read it. And he said the only, only hope that tse people have to claim that luke was not a jew is as thin and as weak as cotton thread. That far more likely luke was a jew although he had a roman name, but so did saul. See . Saul was a jewish name, but what was paul . That was a roman name. And so many of the jews of that time had jewishames as well as was probably one of those. But anyway, that was just an aside, i just happened to think of that. That i so appreciated that confirmation that i was right on when i say that luke is part of the jewish writers of scripture. All right, now ii corinthians chapter 11 verse 5. Look what paul says again, for i suppose i was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. Now i dont know what the average person thinks but when i read that term the chiefest apostle, who do you have to think of . Peter. Of course. He was the spokesman. He was thleader and when you go back into acts chapter 2 and acts chapter 3 3hen those jews sold all their ods and transferred it into cash, at whose feet did they lay it . Peter. So peter was the spokesman, he the twelve. So im sure this is what hes relating to. That he was nonoone whwh behehd peter in authority. You know, i had other ththght here notot too long agogogogogogo since i taught the ii cococohiananananuse you rememberer made mentioioofof e fact that t t t t t t t t t t t probably took three years in a abibiso t t tgod d d d 2 eaeaeao get judaism out of paul. But judaism out of paul. But then i thought of another one not too long ago. Ey spepe threeeeears witit him going up and down the stststadadofofalestine. You didididididididihe may not have spent three years in palestine, bububububububu three years with, i think a ivate tutoragegerorororororororororo lord jesus himself. So you t one whit behind the twelve. I think now thats why it had to be three years atount sinai. Surely it didnt take that long just to learn the things that he was goingo be preaching, but in order to give him that full authororororororororororororororororororororororororororororororororororthree years in arabia. All right, still again in ii corinthiananchchchchchchchchchchchchchch coming over to verse 23. 3. 3. Corinthians chapter 11 verse 23. We almost have to start with verse 22. Ii corinthians chapter 11 verse 22. Are they, again, hes speaking of,susu, peter and the eleven . Are they h hrews . So am i. Are they israelites . Well so o i. Are they the seed of ofourse was s e crowning bragging righghghf f jejejehahahe what does raul say . so am i. so theyve got nothing on him there. in labors even more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prison more frequent, in deaths oft. And then he goes on to show and then this is what he has in mind for these galatians. You mean to tell me i went through all of this in vain . And look what he did. Five times from the jews he received the forty stripes, save one which was 39. Now listen if you understand scourging which this was, usually a man could not take 39 and he would die. And so they usually had to stop short. But he went through it five times without benefit of antibiotics. Without benefit of hospital care. And so how he suffered. Three times i was beaten with rods. Well, you know thats sort of like the poor kid in hong kong a couple of years ago when world screamed, you know. Brutal. Inhuman. Well, listen this apostle went through that three times. Three times. And he was not guilty. One he was stoned and we know the account of that, back up there in asia that, back up there in asia minor. Three times he suffered shipwreck he was dumped in the ocean. a night and a day hed been in the deep. And then on top of that of all the perils of robbers, from his own countrymen, from the heathen, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, weariness, the man was human. He got tired just like we do. He hurt, he ached, of course he did. And then in hunger and thirst, cold, nakedness, fastings all of these things he experienced and chapter 12 now and repeats again why hean write the things that he writes and we can just literally rest on them. Chapter 12 verse 11, ii corinthians chapter 12 verse 11, for he says, in nothing the last part of the verse . In nothing am i behind the very chiefe apostles. And again im sure hes making a reference to peter. He was not halfastep behind peter in his authority or in his revelations or anything else. Although he always makes sure of the fact that in himself, he was nothing. Well, i didnt even read verse 23, up in chapter 11, sorry about that. So he says, are they hebrews . Are they the children of abraham . and so forth. i am more. Well remember. But, i am more. So now hes even taking a little head step against peter and the eleven. He has a halfastep ahead of them. All right, all of this to show then, as you come back to the galatian letter. Chapter 4 verse 13 again, you know how through infirmity of the flesh i preached the gospel unto you at the first. Now i wont take the time to turn to it but do you remember what he says in i corinthians 15 . How that you received that which i had first received. See . And hes always bringing this up that he is at the head of that long line of sinners saved by grace that comprise the body of christ. All right, then verse 14, galatians 4, and my temptation and i think the word testing fits this which was in my flesh you despised not nor rejected. But you received me as an angel of god even as christ jesus. Again go back to ii corinthians chapter 12, some may not be aware, i may have new listeners on this program that have never heard this before. Oh what was the apostles testing . That three times he asked the lord to take it from him. But the lord didnt heal him. But the lord answered him. All right, verse 6, ii corinthians 12, we have to jump in at verse 6 and this is just after he had seen the revelations of glory. And from which he could write, eye hath not seen nor ear heard the things that god hath prepared for them that love him. so now then he comes back from that experience and he says, verse 6, for though the word i always like to put in there is brag, oh, how hed like to brag. Oh you have no idea what i saw if only i could tell you what i heard. But he says, ill not be a fool. God told him he couldnt do it. For i will say the truth, but now i forbea in other words, i withhold telling these things even though the pressure was beyond imagination lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be or that he heareth of me. Of course what was the danger . My, to be able to know somebody that had actually been to glory and had come back and could tell about it my goodness, the world would beat a path to his door. So thats why god had to tell him, you cant reveal it, you cant share it. But heres what i want you to see, verse 7 and 8. And lest i should through the abundance of the revelations. Now do you see what that says . Lest he should get boastful and puffed up because of everything god had revealed to him, not only with what he saw in glory but even these tremendous revelations of scripture. This is enough to give anybody the bighead. But oh he said, lest i be puffed up through the abundance of the revelations wt did god do . Gave him a thorn in the flesh to keep him humble. and so there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of satan. Now we dont know whether it was a demonic angel or what but somehow or other god, like he did to an extent with job, permitted the apostle to suffer an affliction. God didnt inflict it; god permitted satan to just there in the old testament. And so he gave to me a thorn the flesh, the messenger of satan to buffet me and for what purpose . lest i should be exalted above measure. Because of all that god had revealed to him. And then he says, verse 8, for this thing i besought the lord three times and asked him straight out lord take this affliction away from me. And im sure it was an eye affliction. Others would disagree, but horror of horrors i wont even repeat what some group of theologians as i had it rehearsed to me, thought his affliction was. I mean it just goes to show you how low people can get, but nevertheless, i think his affliction was a typical middle eastern eye disease and it would matter and it many times to look at and so the apostle just literally must have said, now lord, how can people stand to look at me . How can i stand up and preach to these people when i look so awful . but god says what . Raul thats when i can use you. You remembe when im always pointing out when he took moses to the backside of the desert, spent 40 years with what . Sheep. You ever been around sheep . Hey, they dont smell very good. They dont smell very good. And there were no people. No population to speak of. And then on top of that joseph made it so plain to the brethren; when they came brethren; when they came down to goshen, for goodness sakes, dont tell pharaoh that youre a shepherd of sheep because a shepherd in the eyes of an egyptian was a what . An abomination. An words, for all practical purposes, moses was egyptian. Thats the culture that hed been raised in and then to look at himself and smell himself and say im nothing but an abominaon thth god says, okay moses, now were ready. Well go to pharaoh. See . And so you have the same thing. Paul, oh he would liked to have been something nice to look at. Paul would liked to have been a big, probably handsome jew, like king saul. But he wasnt. And yet, now look what god said, verse 9 and i guess our times about gone. Oh god says, my grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength god says is made perfect in weakness. And so it was in that weakness with this affliction of the flesh, when paul thought that he was unfit to go sophisticated people. I can imagine especially when he was on mars hill amongst all the big wheel philosophers. And here he is with this affliction that is not very nice to look at. And he must have, he must have just said, lord please, please take this away from me, so that at best people will not be turned off by what they see.
