Occurred on february 14 in the 4500 block of torrey pines court. That is in the south division of the Charlotte Mecklenburg police department. Homicide detectives developed probable cause and made an arrest. The subject arrest side mrs. Feldmans son, irwin j. Feldman. The detectives have detectives have continued to work on this case since the day it occurred. And like i said, they developed probable cause to make this arrest today. I would love to get into a lot of specifics. But what i can say is numerous interviews and physical evidence led us to this point where we made this arrest today. Most importantly, i know during the time this incident occurred, there was great concern in the neighborhood. And some fear and trepidation, which i understand, i share those fears. But i can tell you, theres no reason for that community to be afraid of any sort of random outstanding suspect. We have made an arrest. Unfortunately, it was her son. But this is a known suspect in the case. And we will continue to work it and continue to investigate it. Thats what i have for you right now. Any questions that i can try to handle . And again, we were just hearing the cmpd press conference happening right now. Where they just gave us this major development. They have arrested inafeldmans son. Irwin feldman, in connection to her murder. This happened about 2 years ago. The 82yearold woman found dead in her home. In fact, her son is the one who found her inside that home. And the detective there, the officers saying this was a known suspect. So police have been working on this for quite sometime. Scrambled to clear roadways where several inches of snow fell last night and today. But some welcomed the return of winter, after spring storms raced through the high country, 24 hours ago. Its crazy. But its very welcomed for this community. Because this is what brings people through the mountains to ski and snowboard and be in this winter wrnd wonderlanding winter wonderland. Thank you, steve. 15 minutes ago, it hopes to have most of the power restored to customers, by midnight tonight. There are more than 20,000 outages in dukes Coverage Area in the carolinas. It forced the governor to declare a state of emergency for mecklenburg and gaston counties. They were hit the hardest by the outages. In mecklenburg, there are still nearly 4200 power outages. Only channel 9 was in federal court, after nearly a dozen sentence were arrested in a drug and gun bust in union county. Reporter mark becker found investigators have been watching some of these men for years. Mark . Yes. According to prosecutors, this case goes back more than a dozen years. And among them, the 10 defendants who were arrested today. Pounds of cocaine onto the streets of union county. Reporter we were there late this morning, as five of those named in the indictment shuffled into the courthouse, before a first appearance of a judge on charges go back some in case in some cases, a dozen years. Prosecutors say they were part of crack cocaine conspiracy that handled more than 50 kilos. Or about 120 pounds of crack over time. Prosecutors also say they ran a powder cocaine conspiracy, that put 136 kilos, or almost 300 pounds of that drug on the streets in union county. And where there are drugs, there are often guns. And prosecutors say guns were, indeed, part of this groups arsenal. That includes a. 44,. 38 caliber shotgun. A search of state prison records show six of those named in the indictment, had previous and four of those have spebts time in prison for drugs. And that could bring some of them more time in prison, if theyre convicted. The indictment and arrests have already cost this group more than 21,000 in cash so that agents seized, along with guns and ammunition that were all allegedly part of that drug conspiracy. And all five of those are being held without bond, until their detention hearings next week. Reporting live at the federal courthouse, mark becker, wsoc news. Live, a student is suing an apartment complex near the school after he was shot there. He claims they failed to provide adequate safety for its residents. Miller was shot two days before thanksgiving last year. Police say the shooting was not made any arrests in the case. Discussing charlottes controversial nondiscrimination. Moore gauged the interest for the special session to take up the issue. Before the ordinance takes effect on the 1st. But only the governor can call on the special session. Meanwhile, charlottes City Attorney says, it does not mean they have to do away with separate gender rest rooms. He said that businesses wont be penalized for having gender specific bathrooms. Tonight, a local mother is facing charges. After a Lincoln County official said she used a bible to smuggle drugs and guns to her in prison. They say the inmates mother put a lot of the thought into it. Investigators say this is a mother who wanted to help her son here. They say the mother and his girlfriend, went looking for this. They found the bible here with this is it. With the word, the living bible paraphrased on the front. Francis didnt want to use a bible with the words holy bible on the cover. Viewing this as a harmless gift, for inmates needing direction. Brandon kirby is in jail on nine charges, related to break ins. At this day and time, you dont take chances on any material that is to be delivered to an offender. Reporter detention workers took me back to the area, where they took the bible. This officer, thoroughly inspected the book. The binder had some taping issues on it. Really didnt look right. Reporter when he looked closely at the binder, he found coffee packets with tobacco that can be chewed. And these thin orange strips. Narcotics officers say that is a painkiller, often use as a street drug. They say Francis Melton admitted trying to do a bad thing with a good book. Smart about it. They had to look at all the bibles given to all inmates. Investigator says the girls could still face charges for their part in trying to get drugs into the jail. A happy ending after this 6 weekold puppy was shot 18 times. The homecoming with his new owner and the support hell bring to her tonight, channel 9 is investigating restaurants with sanitation scores so low, the Health Department is forcing them to make changes. Eyewitness news reporter, jim bradley, found restaurants across charlotte with c ratings. He asked why theyre allowed to stay open, despite major risks for foodborne illness. Reporter the charlotte area is filled with restaurants. More than 2,000 of them. And the vast majority of them post an a rating in plain view, with sanitation scores in the 90s. Last three months of Health Inspection reports in mecklenburg county, we found 33 restaurants, where with more troubling bs, that got 80s. And more than a half dozen with grade of c. The lowest score they can hand out. When they have a c, theyre going to have critical violations that would be on that report. That could lead to food borne illness. Yes. They scored 73. 5 in november after the county saw the dish washer used his hands to rinse off the prep sink with meat debris. Then didnt wash his hands. It was graded c in january, when inspectors observed rotted celery, cabbage and spoiled meat. Despot got a 77. 5. Would you eat in a restaurant that is in the 70s . I would not. Can special do remain open and do remain open, even with c grades, even with wellknown names. The Golden Corral had a c grey grade for almost three points, until it scored a 93. 5, an a on january 4th. The big of the surprise may be the uptown steak house shima. They got a b grade in december. Then a c during a reinspection a week later, when they observed raw beef stored in with prosciutto. And fruit flies throughout the upstairs kitchen. It was a shock. It was a big lesson for us. We learned from that. Were never going to let this happen again. Reporter but some restaurants get bs and cs we told but hong kong barbecue. Where we shed you a back alley, where they were growing vegetables to serve diners. The inspector noticed feral cats living in and on the plants. It got a c, a 77 last month, in part for having a roach area. If you have a c grade, are you getting clos to being shut down by close to being shut by a Health Department . In North Carolina, hay Food Establishment cannot go lower than a c. Most give six to 10 days to fix the violations. Spot. The pub at gateway was shut down for a month. They issued suspension of permitar finding no designated kitchen. The pub made changes but had a c grade posted for four weeks before getting an a in a reinspection.
