Until the snowfall starts to let up the plows are just going to have to keep coming through, if you dont have four wheel drive, stay at home until the roads get more cleared up. That might not be until later on tonight. Just keep an eye on conditions and well keep you updated. Thank you. Those four wheel drives dont make you invincible. You have to use the same care. Waking up to that blanket this morning. On top of what weve already seen, we are expecting an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow in the pink shading, maybely our western condition mainly our western counties. Additional 1 to 3 inches. Between 8 00 and 11 00 well start to see snow changing into sleet. Well get a big rush of dry air this afternoon. That will lead to a significant lull in the activity. Nothing will be falling for a lot of the afternoon. That is your opportunity to get outside, build some snow men because areas of freezing rain will gradually start to work their way in this afternoon and especially overnight. Half midnight it will be changing into rain. We are expecting anywhere from a glaze to about a tenth of an inch of Ice Accumulation in the blue shading and then most of the region, especially along the side of the blue ridge, about a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of Ice Accumulation. Typically we need more to see the power outing ans. Some spots could see enough of that icing to get some of the power outages. Just about everyone, this is certainly enough to cause the very slippery roads. Jenna and patrick. Thanks. Now were taking a look at our time saver traffic system this morning. Jason, what are conditions looking like . I imagine everything is pretty much white. Everything is snow covered and the major roads were continuing to make the multiple passes over. The snow is continuing to fall so a layer of ice and snow does remain on the road surfaces. We have not started plowing the secondary roads or neighborhood streets yet. There is pretty deep snowfall in some of those areas. We talked a little bit earlier about this snowstorm versus the snowstorm that we had previously a few weeks ago. That are making it hard for you to treat and clear the roads quickly. Well first of all these cold temperatures have been a major challenge. When it gets this cold the salt does not work as effectively, so were having to prewet that salt with some liquid calcium fluoride to jump start some of the melting. This is a light powdery snow, so it is blowing and creating visibility issues. If we see the ice and freezing rain thats forecasted were expecting difficult times ahead with that ice. And jason, you talked about neighborhood streets there and everybody wants to know when their street is going to get cleared. Walk us through the order that folks see roads get cleared across the region. The more traffic a road carries the sooner it is plowed. So your interstates and major roads are first and then we work into our high volume secondary roads and then down into the neighborhood streets and the low traffic secondary routes. Now the roanoke Emergency Management office sent out a warning to people that says back down on the roads and refreezing occurs resulting in difficulty when plows rye to clear. Are you running into that challenge as well . Absolutely. The pavement temperatures were so very cold prior to this storm, we didnt get above freezing for days. So that means the pavement temperature is so cold when people drive over it with this powdery snow it packs it down. Thats why youre saying please stay off the roads if you can so you guys can do your job. Well continue to check in with you throughout the morning. As weve mentioned, snow covering the roadways, making for hazardous travel wslss Erin Brookshier live with a closer look at what were seeing right now. Erin, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Were on Williamson Road right now, just pasted the intersection with hersch berger. Weave seen snowplows out throughout the morning. I81. 581 and salem. Across the region this is what weve been seeing. The plows are coming through but theyre not able to get down to the pavement. The snow is continuing to fall and blow back on to the roads. As weve also mentioned vdot asking people to stay off the roads, stay home if you can. We havent seen a lot of cars out on the roads. Certainly nothing like you would expect for a monday morning work commute. We have seen some people walking on the roads though. I know the sidewalks are snow covered as well. If youre walking on the roads, watch for traffic, be extra careful. Youll want to watch out for people walking along. Okay, that was Erin Brookshier reporting. And a lot of folks out there, you saw one other car out there, which is what crews are asking. Just stay out of their way. Snow has been falling for more than 12 hours in the new river valley. That area could see anywhere from 6 to 12 inches. As we give you a live look over the Virginia Tech campus. That big plop of white, thats a parking lot. You see cars there, you dont seep the lines or anything like that as snow covering everything. Virginia tech, radford and vmi all closed today because of this winter storm. Bethany, weve seen some big flakes from you, we see the big flakes still falling there in christiansburg. Reporter they are still falling. As you said earlier its been falling here in for a little over 12 hours or so. Still for the record excellent soccer weather. Not excellent driving weather. Weve seen a number of tow trucks in the parking lot next to me on stand by. A lot of Truck Drivers have pulled in to get out of the Road Conditions. Still as you can probably see behind me, there are a number of cars weve seen go by. If you do have to be out there, make sure youre staying most of the roads are snow or ice covered. Blacksburg transit announced they will not be running any routes this morning in blacksburg or christiansburg. They will reevaluate later this morning to see about afternoon routes. Because the snow started falling last night, a lot of people have had to work through the overnight and Early Morning hours to make sure the folks who do have to be on the roads can do so. We take care of kroger, gas station, lefties, Blacksburg Square across the street and game stop. Thats where ill be for the rest of the night. Now if you dont have someone who is a professional plowing the parking lot or getting you out of your parking spot this morning, i would allow extra time as i found out this morning it does take a little bit of time to do that. Jenna, patrick. It certainly does. And its hard work. It doesnt look like it would be but it is. Yes. Thanks so much. Reminder this morning that this Winter Weather can turn the last storm we had just a few weeks ago. During that snowstorm almost 50 people died across the nation. At least a dozen of those deaths happened here in the commonwealth. Four of those 12 deaths were people who had be shoveling snow. A professor died while shoveling at his home. Five others died from hypothermia, including people in wise and henry counties. Take this seriously. Take breaks. And check on your friends and neighbors. Once you get your driveway cleared its a nice gesture to walk next door and help them if theyre struggling. The best news of all is eventually this stuff is going to melt away. Maybe sooner rather than later as kristina has great news down the road in your forecast. Good morning. Good morning. Yes. The great news, temperatures are in the 60s this weekend. For right now it is a winter wonderland. Winter storm warning in effect until noon tomorrow. Right now we are looking at area wide snowfall. But pretty consistent here. Theyve been falling all night. Were waking up to more of that. Weve seen between 4 and 7 inches of snowfall. Our next condition will be the ice mixing in. Weve had ice starting to push in. Ice trying to lift in to south side. Right now it is still in North Carolina though. As more of that warm air starts to mix in we will see more of that ice. Between now and 9 00, most of us are just seeing the snow showers and then into the late morning, early afternoon, that snow starts to lift to the north. That warmer air, that drier air starts to push in. Thats that pink shading, that ice mixing in for us. This afternoon we expect a pretty big break in the activity in most areas. Well have a lot of dry air in place. This will be the time between about noon and 3 00 to get outside, have your snowball fights, go sleigh riding. Then heading into the evening and overnight the ice really starts to come down for us. Of our freezing rain after midnight. We are warming up for just plain rain showers. We could see heavy rain showers especially for the Early Morning commute tomorrow. By tomorrow afternoon we really start to dry things out. A few mountain flurries. Other that well be in the clear by tomorrow afternoon. On top of the snowfall that we have seen, we could see an dish 2 to 4 inches in our western counties shaded in the pink and our eastern counties an additional 1 to 3inches of snowfall. As for that Ice Accumulation, about a glaze to a tenth of an inch in the blue shading then up to a quarter inch of ice across most of the region with isolated higher totals right along the spine of the blue ridge. Talk more about the icing and just how much temperatures are going to be changing. Well head over to Jonathan Kegges outside our studio this morning. Hey. Even with all this snow youre talking about the news must go on. Freshly delivered just to the station here. One of the cars drove by. Doing a good job this morning keeping the news flowing even with this disruptive snow out here. As you mentioned again we have that snow continuing to fall out on the patio. About five or six inches. Were getting the fluffy snow. For reference, kristina drew this awesome snow man. This is freezing rain. Heading into tomorrow, watch what happens. We get this push of warm air. We go from the teens today to 24 hours later in the 40s and 50s. And our snow man might not be looking too healthy come tomorrow. We do have impressive totals out here, anywhere from 4 to 7 inches across the area. Talking about temperatures again in bedford around 7 inches, salem, 6inches. About an inch and a half for us in danville. Although we have the snow falling now, were expecting that ice. Upwards of a quarter inch possible. Mother nature going to try to help us out. Well head towards the 50s tomorrow, wednesday. Middle 50s on friday with the help of some sunshine also. Weve been talking about it all morning. Look at that weekend, back below to middle 60s both saturday and sunday. Just get through the next 48 hours. Thats the greatest. Next 48 hours. Yep. Were getting more good viewer pictures once you come in youll be able to check these out. Tammy brown sent in a picture from her patio table. Keeping the roads clear has because of the consistency of this snowfall we have seen several plows this morning. A warning to drivers that driving will remain treacherous throughout the day and the morning as we continue to experience snow and then following that were expecting some ice and freezing rain. Now right now like you said the prediction is 6 inches to a foot here in covington of snow by the time this storm finally passes us. Just another one of those mornings where vdot is try warn everyone to avoid driving on the roads. The good news is we have seen several crews that are tirelessly plowing these roads here in covington and trying to keep the roads safe for drivers. Now the way they do that is they focus on the primary roads first, doing the interstates and roads like this one here so if your road at your house and your neighborhood hasnt been plowed yet, you know, probably one of those secondary roads theyll get to maybe not today but all roads will be plowed within 48 hours of this storm hitting. So hopefully itll be cleared within a short period of time here. In covington. Thanks, rob. Snow started falling in parts of the mid atlantic and northeast overnight.
