Thanks for joining us tonight. Im lindsey ward. A winter storm warning is still in effect as the area is seeing freezing rain and frigid temperatures. The runway is covered in snow tonight and a handful of flights are canceled tonight. Well check in now with jeff haniewich. As you said the winter storm is in effect until tomorrow. For the potential of freezing rain across the area, it will be heavy and widespread and cause treacherous conditionsp even south into franklin and chatham and up north and into brook neil, dealing with heavy rain at this point. Give it about 20 minutes and it will be arriving in lynch burg. Well have not one but two batches of energy here well be watching over the next 18 hours. Icing concerns in light blue, thats where we have at least a tenth of an inch and areas in pink about a quarter of a inch. East of that, as much as half an inch of ice. So this will likely be the jackpot area. 29 in wytheville. Temperatures tonight will go up to about freezing by 1 00 a. M. Had a break from the snow but now the concern is ice as you can see from our Virginia Tech sky cam, the campus is covered in snow. Class were all canceled today. They have been trying to clear the snow and when we checked in the with dawn earlier that freezing rain had started to fall. Reporter yeah, the freezing rain started to fall and we kind of lucked out for now, because as of right now theres nothing happening. Thats good news for us, but i can tell you now that the state police have asked people to stay off the roads for now and people have listened to that warning. Im currently on south main street here and we drove around today and mostly people are without in their suvs and other plows out clearing the street. They have been out all day and including some drivers. I had an appointment to get my car for a recall on it, just checking stuff out on it. So if not for that i would have stayed home, where everybody should be. And coming up at 11 00 well continue to talk to people and well let you know what they have to say then. Well tonight the storm has shifted from snow to sleet and new lower spectrum here and leaving packed snow and ice leaving the roads treacherous tonight. We have been covering conditions all day. Reporter well ive been and most people have been heeded the warnings of staying off the road, so we havent seen any incidents which is good. Plows have been coming by regularly and all of the roads are clear at this point. Mike stoll is a contractor that runs the plow all the way to the border on a 7 mile stretch. He said this was a hard parked snow and decreased visibility. The beginning was the hardest for him to clear. Well it was snowing really bad this morning and couldnt hardly see what you were doing and it was dark. The snow covered the road completely and i was hitting the reflectors on the road. Been operating a plow for ten years in this area. Ice will become a concern in this area and that will make it hard for the plows to get them off the road. And black ice as well, the crews are working around the clock to make sure the roads are safe and they say they will have all the roads plowed within 48 hours. Were keeping an eye on the roads tonight, heres a live look at 465 east. Tomorrow morning roads are expected to be slick, theyre roads as the freezing rain continues. Reporter im right by 581 where the road is pretty much cleared but were seeing freezing rain. A lot of roads are cleared but the Road Conditions are expected to worsen as it changes to freezing rain. Its a problem for road crews who are treating the roads to help melt the ice and brace for traction. The snow below operators have been working all day to treat the main and primary roads. Theyre making passes over those routes as they continue to be covered by ice and snow and rain. Were very concerned, ice is a more difficult situation to treat. We usually treat them with chemicals and were waiting for the temperatures to warm up. The main roads a priority and the secondary ones are barely touched. The clean up crews remain focused on clearing the roads. They battled the snow earlier today and now the concern is icing over. This means that the city plows will retrace their steps from earlier. They will treat them with salt. If the rainfall continues and we will redouble our effortses and continue on the primary routes to get them cleared before we can get to the residential streets. Theyre delaying the trash pick up in roanoke. Residents are being asked to put the containers out to the curb, they will attempt to collect them by wednesday. Some businesses are closed and others are thriving. And the weather is causing car problems out there, right . Reporter well absolutely. The Virginia Police say they have responded to hundreds of incident across the state. As you can see from behind me,theres a slushiness thats happening out here. And another thing is the cold weather is actually causing some issues for cars, some mechanical issues. A car place has towed several cars that were stuck in the snow and others with problems. Several things that you should have in your car, that includes shovels. You can use rocks and small it down on the snow and get some traction. If you know if it will snow, keep good tires on the car, thats helps a lot. Some problems, alt ter natetors werent working properly and transmissions as well. Keep proper care of your vehicle, and start the car even if you dont plan to going out. Thank you, brie. Well bring you the latest on the up coming tomorrow even when we are not on the air, you can download the storm team 10 app or visit our website wsls. Com. That coverage as we get later into the evening the potential for Power Outages increases as the power lines and tree limbs become more and more covered with ice. Were looking at the citys Utility Department and how they plan to respond. I dont know if you can tell but the rain has started to fall again. This is what the Utility Company is most concern about all day. They do have a plan and theyre ready to put it into place. We have two contract crews to trim the trees and be able to react to to anything that happens. Reporter that will likely happen because of the trees sagging and leading to Power Outages. If they think its a danger call us and well address it. Doesnt happen and theyre ready for winter to be over. Pretty much [ laughter ] pretty much [ laughter ] oh yeah,. If the Power Outages happen, they will dispatch the crews to the biggest area. The east coast is getting slammed with bitter cold temperatures into tuesday. A winter storm is in effect in washington, d. C. The National Weather service says that dc could have picked up about 4 inches of snow. Reporter over the last couple of days, the coldest last 20 years. Drive across the country and theres a number of accidents that have taken place. We have a handful of schools and businesses that are closed and we want to know how post pictures up on facebook or welcome back. Im jeff haniewich, everywhere you see the pink thats where we have that freezing rain weve got freezing rain here and its very heavy out here. Many reported around horse pasture, south into the Roanoke Valley. The area that has seen the least amount is the new river valley. For the latest on the times, hes allen. All right, justin were tracking things hourbyhour. We see that moderate rain here and advance it into the overnight hours. Still some freezing rain here in roanoke. Look at 6 30 in the morning, if you head out look at that line. Maybe a rumble of thunder as this system gets energy here. So everything turns to rain after 4 00 a. M. And sunshine makes a come bback. So the icy concerns are for the Roanoke Valley and Bedford County where that line is setting up where we could see a quarter of a line that could bring tree limbs down and some isolated outages of us. Lexington about a quarter of an inch of that ice. So this system is far from over. And the rain, youve got to keep in mind, they will transition to heavier rain and were looking at maybe an inch and a half of rain following the freezing rain so thats why were concerned about the flooding come tomorrow morning. The National Weather service put out a special statement here echoing this, roads can as we head into this evening and morning hours. Any time theres icing you cant close the book on that. Outages and flooding a moderate threat. The more rain the higher the threat of course. The rain has nowhere to go and covering those drains right now. 25 in wytheville and 26 in roanoke. Overnight tonight, were looking at this temperatures going up. By about 10 00, upper 20ss and a few lower 30s. Then look what happens at the temperatures, we go beyond the hours here and we see the 30s. Tomorrow, in the 40s so we could have that melting of the snow for sure. Saturday. And sunday is nice, we see the 60s come back. Thursday into friday, even into saturday that looks to be the brighter of the two weekend days. Sunday, well have a chance of rain but highs of 64 and maybe a few leftover how leftover showers. It is a clipper type system and we could have a light accumulation in the Higher Elevations come wednesday morning. And youve put a teaser out there for a 24th and 25th too . Well yeah, that looks very interesting. So well have to tune back in . Yeah, its nine or ten days away and well focus that on soon. And everybody in the Weather Center was like ah, have you so well watch it closely. We want to remind to you tune in tomorrow at 4 30, the crew will have to very latest on the Winter Weather and your morning commute. Heres what you can expect to see tonight, at 8 00, the super store and then tonight we have that coverage at 11 00. We have a lot of freezing rain out there. We do. I want to show you, lindsay was looking at this map and its really pretty but its not a good thing. The freezing rain out there in the pink. Thanks for joining us and 11 00 tonight. [ music ] his final hours. Inside the el president e suite, where Supreme Court justice antonin scalias body was found. And mystery over the pillows. They said he was found with a pillow over his head. And is he in hot water again
