Potential is there for significant icing. We are looking at a trace0. 50 of ice accretion. The highest amounts 0. 25 0. 50 will likely be along and just east of the parkway from late this afternoon through just after midnight. Power outages will need to be monitored for sure. The ice should changeover to plain rain late tonight before ending around lunchtime on tuesday. The flooding potential will be elevated quite a bit late tonight into Tuesday Morning as there will some pockets of heavy rain. The rain really has no place to go because of the drainage systems being blocked by snow, especially in urban areas. Over an inch of rain is possible. Temperatures will go up tonight, reaching the midtoupper 30s by daybreak tuesday. And highs on tuesday will top out in the afternoon. We could actually see a little lateday sun on tuesday. Another weak storm will impact us tuesday night into early wednesday, bringing about another wintry mix of light rain and or snow showers. We could see a last night around 7 oclock. That shifted to sleet around noon today, making a new challenge for plows trying to keep the roads safe for drivers. Wsls 10s rob manch has been in covington tracking the conditions there for us. Rob hows it looking and how are people dealing with the mess . It seems like most people are dealing with it by staying home like vdot recommends. We havent seen many people out here on the roadways, and havent heard any reports of but we did find some people here at Sj Neathawk Lumber Company who braved the roads to come into work today. Manager aaron lane tells us he drives 40 miles from West Virginia to get to work, and he commends vdot workers for keeping the roads clear enough for him to make it in, despite the consistent snowfall weve seen throughout the day. This store sells things like shovels, ice melt, and wood stoves that people rely on to weather the storm. And being one of the only stores open, lane says the weather means business. Aaron lane, s. Neathawk lumber manager15 18 00 the last storm a couple weeks ago was 2 hundred snow shovels, all my ice melt, which i have gotten new ice melt back in, so hopefully ive got enough to get through this storm. Lane had his staff out clearing the parking lot here with shovels today and they even helped customers by clearing snow off of cars. But as i said before, the only reason stores like neathawk storm is because of the hard work of plow drivers. Coming up on your wsls 10 news at six, we ride along with one of those drivers out battling the elements. So rob, now that the snow is over, what would you say the final total looks like in covington . Well i think we ended up on the lowend of that spectrum. The original prediction was 6 to have 6 here. But the packed down snow on the roads, in addition to the ice thats coming down now, means that the job for vdot crews and contractors is far from over. In covington, rob manch, wsls 10. So still a lot of work to be done for drivers of. And that for drivers. And that ice earlier made it so a lot of work to be done. And dot drivers will be out throughout the night. Thank you, rob. 6 to 8 in the greater covington area. So he was just spot on there. Maybe a tad more. Meanwhile, roads across southWest Virginia are hit with road and ice. Officials are asking drivers to stay off the roads for their safety. This storm has already caused a crash. Virginia state police say troopers have responded to 538 traffic crashes and more than 38 disabled vehicles. Most have come from the salem area and 51 were in the wytheville. Wsls10 is live outside. You . Reporter its actually not too bad. 581 going up and down here is pretty much cleared down to pavement. But i do want to warn you there are some slick spots out there. While the majority of major roads have been cleared. Vdot says Road Conditions are expected to worsen as snow turns to freezing rain. Freezing rain and ice is a problem for road crews. Theyre treating the icy roads with chemicals for traction. Snowplow operators have been working all day to plow and treat interstate and primary roads. The major roads are the first priority. And crews are making passes over those routs as theyre continuously covered with ice, snow, and rain. The main roads arent too bad. Theyre slushy, but theyre passable. Mostly one lane. Any of the back roads and side roads are still real bad, even reporter vdot is preparing crews for downed trees. Those roads are first focus next to the secondary and neighborhood roads. For some of you, i know that it looks like some dont look theyve been touched yet. Theyre focusing on clearing the major roads. More people were trying to get out of their driveways earlier today. Wsls10. They hit the roads sunday night and have been busy today. City drivers work 12hour shift whens clearing the roads. We were able to ride along with one driver who says its his job to push the snow to the curb as the one ahead of him clears the roads. Drivers actually have to prepare hard for this job. In the case of our night shift, obviously they need to alter their sleep schedules. Thats a certain something but i think they do the best they can. They recognize that they are out there for extended periods of time. And to be best prepared, the drivers are best familiarized with their equipment and roads back in the fall. And your traffic report may be a little misleading today because everything looks clean and green. But for the most part, i think thats because there are very few vehicles on the road. There are a couple situations we want you to be aware of. Vdot warning you of an accident in Montgomery County. Its cleared the lefthand shoulder and near mile marker 118. 6 in Montgomery County. And for those who rely on public transportation, heres a look at the current bus schedules. Roanoke valleys metro is operating today. Its following its snow route schedule. The smart way bus is doing the same, though it will not service the Corporate Research center. Is closed inch and the airport, as expected closed. And the airport, as expected, have delays. The lynchburg airport also reporting cancellations to and from charlotte as well. Meanwhile the Danville Regional Airport has reopened as of 3 00. The higher levels of the atmosphere are starting to warm up. To rain. But that wont happen until about 2 am. Winter storm warnings are still in effect for everyone mainly because of the potential for some freezing rain. Youll notice that were still noticing a victory mix up, freezing rain being reported across parts of franklin county, right along highway 224 and the freezing rain becomes heavier and more widespread across the course of the evening. By around midnight hours seven and most county will start to feel the transition over to rain, it is still going to be freezing rain and then it is all just rain. And it could be very heavy rain i ever tuesday at 6 30 am. At around 11 30 am i think most if not all of the moisture is gone, and that should close out the day tomorrow and there may showers before wednesday afternoon start to break out a little more sunshine. Areas in light blue will be glazed, and about a quarter of an inch for areas shaded in purple, and in red, we will see around 1 4 inch maybe even one third of an inch or maybe even an inch of ice. So the area in red is the bills i. Just outside right now a little bit of missed and freezing right now so the main concern will be the freezing rain right now and then the rainfall, check out the rainfall amounts by Tuesday Morning, we are tracking 1 to 2 inches car in top of all the snow and it really doesnt have anywhere to go, all the rain comes up from the snow, so they are concerned about areas of and tomorrow morning. So out and about it is going to be a messy forecast with heavy rain early on, and a lot of that on the ground so watch out for that while traveling out and about tomorrow morning and that rain will be coming down, so we could even see some rain due to that ice. To look at what is ahead, coming up. Storm packed to tuesday, icy roads are high and a large concern. So stay inside this evening even to tomorrow morning i would urge you to do just that. Road closures on the low side but anytime you get freezing rain car over a quarter of an inch you have to worry about a potential for road closures. Power outages and flooding are a moderate concerned we do think theres going to be a fair amount of icing tonight that will weigh down power half inches of rain. So flooding will need to be monitored because there is no place for the rain to go. 24 in robbinsville, 24 in blacksburg, your seven day forecast showing temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. And oh yeah current 62 saturday, 63 on sunday, upper 50s on monday. Were going to see more sunshine, but even on saturday a chance for rain, sunday into monday morning. I will say if you are a snow lover, another time frame to potentially watch out for is february 24 and terry 25th. That would be two weeks. I think more like next week. Lets be on the lookout for it, it doesnt mean its going to happen but in case you are enjoying what is outside right now, both of you enjoyed that, [laughter] meanwhile the crews havent been out scraping down the roads and they will have to because it is so icy. The snow has tapered off but not before leaving a foot of snow in some places. John, it is president s day but they did have classes and canceled because of the snow . Supposed to be a snow school day but the snow changed that. Most of the activity going on here on campus, and trucks like these, plowing the sidewalks they have done a pretty good job for the roads around here but now they are working on the sidewalks some more in the Parking Spaces on the side as well. The university really closes but it is becoming more common. This is the second time this semester that the university is closed, but not everyone has the day off, someone like these facilities workers are out during the campus streets some students did make it out to have a little time fun. We decided to go sledding, what else are you going to do on a slow day snow day. That snow truck makes a lot of noise. The university has not yet announced whether it will have a delayed opening tomorrow or closing, but these guys will be out here working all night with the ice that is expected to come. And one gentleman who goes by the name of logan was out shoveling and had already shoveled seven sidewalks and walkways for all the houses around. He feels is edited it is as if it is part of his responsibility for neighbors who cant shoveled their own sidewalks. There is a whole neighborhood and your people down here who need help, you have to stick your neck out and go ahead and help these people. Wow.
