Despite the warning, mr. Trump made flynn his National Security adviser before firing him 24 days into his presidency. It comes as the russia investigation is now under new management. Former fbi director Robert Mueller taking over as special counsel. The president only recently ripped into the investigation releasing a measured statement insisting a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know, that there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity, adding i look forward to this matter concluding quickly. Muellers appointment blind siding the white house. They only worded it after the order was signed. Ro its in the Public Interest for me to exercise my authority and appointment a special prosecutor for this matter. Democrats and republicans praising the move. I think this is a positive thing for the american people. Theres no conflict of interest from the hill, the white house, or from within the Justice Departme department. Reporter this morning a report that could strain the relationship between the president and republican leaders. The Washington Post reporting how Majority Leader Kevin Mccarthy said during a private conversation last summer theres two people i think people paid, the california congressman and trump. Tell me the reaction to mueller and can he truly be independent . Reporter a positive reaction from capitol hill and elsewhere. The Justice Department wanted someone with instant he has it all. It will take him a little while to get up to speed, but its hard to think of anybody who could do that more quickly. Hell have all the power of the u. S. Attorney. He can approve avenues of investigation, authorize subpoenas for witnesses or get documents. The last independent counsel was kenneth star. The law allowing the appointment of independent counsels lapsed in 1999 because congress was concerned investigations could be too free wheeling. As special counsel he has less independence. If he wants to expand the investigation, hell have to get permission from the Deputy Attorney general, the person who appointed him, and a special counsel can be fired for misconduct or violating Justice Department policies but congress has to be told why. Thank you. That brings us to jason testify before that committee next week. Congressman, good morning. Let me ask you about the appointment of director mueller. Do you have confidence in him . Do you expect to accept his results, whatever he finds . I think hell be broadly supportive. He has a storied history, ten years leading the fbi in the bush and the obama administration. It couldnt be a better choice. Hes in the latter part of his career with nothing to prove. Hell be a fabulous job. Is this a fabulous case of when you need a special prosecutor . I dont know that i would have done that. I have not seen evidence of collusion. It begs the question, why do they need a special prosecutor . What are they trying to prosecutor . But the department of justice made this case. There are a lot of people who wanted to see this. I think hell do a good job. Isnt it fairly investigation by the fbi and then the fbi director gets fired by the person who is at the center of the investigation, his campaign, isnt that a pretty clear case of needing a special prosecutor . Some have made that case. I just believe that there are literally thousands of career fbi agents, men and women who also have impeccable credentials. What i like about the selection of mueller is he used to run that organization. You wont lose the benefit of the work that has been done over the last several months. Hell be able to take it up and continue. Congressman, i have to ask you about the story, the New York Times reporting that Michael Flynn goes to the Transition Team for trump before taking office and says, look, im under federal investigation for possibly secretly working for turkey during the campaign and despite that information being given to the trump transition, hes made the National Security adviser and given access to the most government. Does that make any sense to you . Well, i think one of the questions that also needs to be asked along that way is the white house itself does not make a determination as to whether or not somebody gets a security clearance. That goes to the office of but wait. But youre putting him in that position where he has access to all those secrets and you know hes under federal investigation for secretly working for another country. Well, thats why it wasnt necessarily a secret. He is disclosing that. Our committee has made a reference, the oversight committee, has made a recommendation for final determination. General flynn should not have taken money from turkey or russia, but the group that actually makes the determination as so whether or not they get a security clearance is the office of the director of noshl intelligence. But hiring him as the National Security adviser, does that sound like good judgment in your opinion . Well, look, also look at the odni as to whether or not he has the proper security clearances. And i do think that donald trump did make the right decision in that he let him go 24 days into it. And i think the president did make the right decision. Should he have been fired in the first place i guess is the question. You can argue he probably shon shouldnt, but maybe knowing what we know now, he shouldnt have. But he did dismiss him. I think at some level, and i have jeremy describe this as a darker cloud, people call it lawyering up, people retain personal counsel, but i think in some ways in terms of being able to turn this over to someone who bob mueller is a national treasure. To be able to turn this whole case file over to someone who is trusted by both sides is in some ways the first opportunity the white house has to begin to turn the page on this story. And to you, jeremy, about director mueller, we here pete talking about independence. He still answers to the Deputy Attorney general. Is there any question in able to conduct this investigation independently and go wherever it leads him . No question. I know bob mueller. Ive worked with him and his team in the past. Hes fearless but fair. He has independence, credibility, and experience to not only lead the case agency, fbis who are leading the matter already, but he has a broad mandate. Theres no time limit set. He can investigate not just ties between russia and trump but any other matter that arises. Thats an expansive phrase that gives him broad ways to investigate. Thats an important point. Do you think as part of this investigation he might subpoena Donald Trumps tax returns . And secondly, can he control leaks . Because leaks coming out of an investigation can undermine the credibility of the person conducting that investigation. I think he will subpoena not just tax or financial records that show connections between the Trump Organization and russian officials whether in the putin government or in the private sector. I think thats an issue in this case. I think he will be able to control leaks. Hes shown he can do that in the past. Nicole, the reaction from the white house and the president himself is measured. He released a statement. He havent seen a tweet on this. Do you think the message has gotten through to him that not only does what he say carrie political significant kans, but in this case, its legal as well. I think the message started to get through early yesterday. I know that was the effort underway at the white house inside and outside. They were trying to make clear that this question that hangs over him is going to prevent him from doing anything else he wanted to do on the world stage or anything else he wants to communicate will be impossible until he starts to lift this ou thank you so much. She these sharks with swimming in shallow water. I went on a boat to see if theyre back, and boy, are they ever. This morning where theyre going and how to stay safe at the beach before you get in the water. New this morning. Sharks spotted off the coast of south carolina. Theyre out there. The beach packed with people. The sharks just feet away. Across the country in california its right there. We spot them too. Theres the fin in the water. You see the fin in the water . Theres a shark right there. Great whites feet off long beach, and its not just one. Shark after shark. I have another one right over here. Spotted in offshore. This is where we swim. This is where our kids swim. This is about as far out as i would come with my kids. Were close to the shoreline. And there have been several recent attacks. In florida a shark attacked this teenager biting his foot and ankle. In hawaii, this man narrowly escaped after a 12 foot shark attacked him. His leg was completely mauled. And in california this mother of three attacked. A great white dragging her under nearly killing her. I see a fin. Now researchers from the Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab are trying to track the sharks every move, and they invited us along. When the sharks get close, they spring into action. Okay, the researchers are putting the net in the water. We have eyes on the shark. Look how close we are to the beach. The shark is right over here. Theyre going to try to capt they corral a great white to the side of the boat thrashing around. But theyre not done yet. Now, go, lift. Transferring her to a special water bath for tagging. Theyre going to put this tracker on to the shark. What does this do . This is basically a fit bit for sharks. Its a little backpack that we made. It will measure every motion the shark makes. It also tells you what beach these sharks are going to . Yes. Its telling us what the shark is experiencing. Is that a camera . It is a camera. A new study by Consumer Reports out this morning is help sunscreen buyers avoid getting burned. The results show a lot of the spf numbers on the label are higher than the actual protection in the lotion and sprays inside your bottle. A major notice on sunscreen just in time for summer. A new study says the advertised level of spf protection on labels could be critically off. In a report released this morning, Consumer Reports says that some sunscreens fail to provide the level of protection promised on the package. Up to 58 lotions, sprays q and sticks evaluated by Consumer Reports, 20 tested at less than half their labeled spf number. You have the risk of damaging your skin if youre relying on it to protect yourself. According to this study, five product labelled with an spf of 50 or 50 plus had a level between 0 and 9. Consumer reports called out natural sunscreens as well. We found the natural sunscreens and those are the ones th ones that dont perform as well as the products that have a chemical active ingredient. The fda does not regularly test sunscreens on the market. Leaving that responsibility to the manufacturers themselves. The fda echoing that policy in a statement to nbc news. Saying manufacturers of all drug products including sunscreens are subject to fda inspection and may be subject to fda action if they are found to be not in compliance with federal law. Also troubling, inconsistency within brands themselves. We had some products that of one particular brand that did very well in our tests and came in high on the ratings and others that didnt. Reporter the personal Care Products counsel which represents many popular sunscreen brands disagrees with the findings saying it appears that Consumer Reports testing methods are notsi not the same testing required by the product manufacturers to assign the spf designation. Several products not high marks. Walmart brand and copper tones water babies 50 were rated excellent with at least 85 of advertised spf. However, copper tones High Performance spray spf 30 has 49 or less spf than what appears on the label. Ren response the Parent Company says it goes beyond what the fda requires which includes the evaluation of our products by experts. Experts say you can do a few things to make sure your sunscreen is effective as possible. Some experts recommend shake the bottle to make sure the active ingredien a distributed and always make sure youre storing it at room temperature. Good advice, jo. Thank you. Was in the nixon white house, worked on the Reelection Campaign for Ronald Reagan among other political figures. A legend dare figure in media and politics and more recently harassment allegations. Earlier he was credited as a guy who revolutionized television. In the last Year Associated with that Sexual Harassment scandal that took place within fox news that eventually led to his ouster. Thats something Stephanie Gosk has been covering. What do you make of this news this morning . Had there been rumblings that he was in ill health, going through difficult times recently . Reporter we havent heard anything about his health. I think you look at him, hes 77 years old. He looked to be somewhat overweight. You can imagine potential Health Problems for someone at that age. So the largest context is this is happening at 77 while early is not surprising to people who have covered him because of his ill health for years. I wrote a biography of ailes that came out a couple of years ago. On one hand he changed both media and politics forever. He built fox news from nothing into a most valuable asset valued at over 15 billion. On the other hand he ruled fox news with an iron fist. Women who worked at fox news as weve now learned were subject to a hostile Work Environment and Sexual Harassment, and he could be a the terrorizing figure within the company. Its a very complicated story. Also a very tragic and in some ways, his quest for power consumed him. And its sad in a certain way for a writer who has covered him, he kind of died alone. He moved to palm beach. Was sort of in exile after the Sexual Harassment allegations, and basically ends this final of chapter of hz life alone. He denied the allegations until the end of Sexual Harassment. Thats correct. And hes denied the allegations all throughout in the wake of the lawsuits. The time we were making it and people would ask me about it and there definitely, the court of Public Opinion was that ruth and the boys were in on it, and they were part of a whole conspiracy and they were, and which is anything but true. And so i felt like this responsibility to defend her. And i felt one of the things im most happy about with the finished product was my biggest concern, was that we told the truth about these people and that they came out, that their truth and their story was told and revealed. And, in fact, on the show you got to meet with ruth, and bob, you didnt meet with bernie. Did that change how you played i didnt meet him, because the feeling was it would have been difficult to meet him, maybe it would have been somehow not i dont know. I just. And i met so many other people who knew him, worked with him, his lawyers, friends, blah blah. So i felt that was okay. Of course, it would have been great to meet him, but i didnt do that. Was there anything after researching him and playing him that you would have asked him had you been able to meet him, or many things you would have asked him . Of course. A lot of things. I dont know how honest he would want to be or how you know, how he would rationalize certain things. You see it with the present administration. One thing i feel strongly about is i always felt before the movie, the kids for his wife knew anything about it. I feel very strongly about that. Michelle, al mentioned you got to meet with ruth. How did you find her and portray her . I was planning on not meeting her. I made a choice to not meet her. I felt like shed been through enough. She certainly didnt need me kind of coming in and probing into her life, and then so we started shooting, and then i started getting kind of messages from various people that she might be open to meeting me. And so i did. And i was really glad that i did. I only spent about an hour with her, and we just spent time talking, and we drink the same wine, and she was lovely. And obviously guarded what guarded but really gracious. Well, its a fascinating movie. A real interesting look into what happens to a family when Something Like this happens. Stephanie an air force captain is graduating this weekend from johnson and wells culinary school. Shes making red wine braised short ribs. Good morning. Already chewing. Sitting in our tasting counter, dylan and jenna. Those are our judges. Rick, lets start with you. It looks pretty healthy. It is. Obviously theres chicken pineapple and broccoli. I use a little brown sugar and i use soy sauce, and i make up a cooked together. Break it down. Thats the thickening agent. We heat up the chicken with butter and garlic, get that going. Brown it up. Sometimes i cut them up. Theyre better. Once that gets going, add the pineapple and juice. This is pineapple juice. You can get it in a can. It makes it easy. Soy sauce, brown sugar. Let it simmer down. Get it a little thick. Get a spoon. If it stays separated, its good. Bring it to a boil . Bring it to a boil. Dont overcook the broccoli. Just blanch it. Top it off with green onion and celery seed and bam, there you go. All right, mama. You ready . Did i just call you mama . Yeah. Thats fine. We have veggies and aromatics. Onion, keep it big. Make sure theyre a good sized. You want them to hold up. We have Chicken Stock and i know this is a beef dish, but i like Chicken Stock because the flavor is better. If you prefer beef stock, that fine. The short ribs have been sered and taken out of the pod. We have the vegetables that are browned. What were going to do next is add flour. And what this does is this is going to help thicken up the sauce later. And were going to give it a stir and let it cook down, and once it cooks down, were going to go ahead and add your wine. Can it be any red wine . It doesnt have to be dc i use a 7 bottle of caber nay and its fine. Yout until it cooks out. After that you add Chicken Stock. Chicken stock. I didnt realize you could do that. Throw the short ribs in, toss it in the even at 375 for about three hours. Its fork tender. Oh, man. Its almost two different. Theyre both yummy. This is really hard. Theyre both really good. Do we have to choose . You do, but dont worry. Its all good. We dont want to choose. Everyone is a winner. Go ahead. Right now . Yeah. We really do love them both. The thing is that its 90 something degrees out today, so the refreshing nature of the pineapple chicken is the winner today. But theyre both good. Ive been eating both.
