Millions from the midwest to the northeast are recovering this morning after a dangerous windstorm sparked massive power outages, deadly Gabe Gutierrez is in Oklahoma City this morning with more. Oklahomas governor has declared a state of emergency in 22 counties and now the strong winds that fueled fires in this state and others are moving east, claiming more lives. The powerful winds wreaking havoc across a large swath of the country. Gusts reportedly reaching up to 70 miles an hour in some areas according to the National Weather service. In upstate new york, the wind tearing down trees and power lines, blocking roads and stranding drivers in rochester. Near buffalo the dpugust causin this Freight Train drauerailmen. And in Southwest Detroit the wind causing this plane to slide off a runway during an aborted takeoff. The aircraft heavily emergency exits. Thankfully nobody was hurt. In another part of detroit the wind fanned a deadly blaze at an Apartment Building that killed five people. Roofs also ripped off buildings. At one point more than a Million People in michigan had no power. That same storm system fueling wildfires burning out of control in several states. The flames chewing through more than a million acres in oklahoma and kansas alone. Those wildfires claiming at least six lives. Today authorities here in oklahoma hope that improving conditions might help firefighters, but what they really need is more rain. All right, Gabe Gutierrez, thanks so much. To politics now and the race to find out who was behind that massive wikileaks documents dump that exposing the u. S. Intelligence gathering hacking into phones, tvs and messaging apps. We are covering it all beginning with andrea andrea, good morning. Good morning, willie. The fbi has indeed opened a Counter Intelligence investigation. The cia doing Damage Assessment after that Wikileaks Dump has struck again. This morning both the fbi and cia scrambling to find out who is behind what could be the worst breach of u. S. Intelligence in recent history. Thousands of documents posted by wikileaks which it says reveals the cia secret playbook for hacking. The cia not commenting on whether the stolen documents are authentic, but one senior u. S. Official telling nbc news they do contain authentic top secret information. At the end of the day what this does is reveal not just u. S. Capabilities but gives a road map to americas enemies as to not only how to defend against these capabilities but also how to use them. The potential knows how the cia hacks their smartphones, smart tvs and computers, even getting into encrypted apps like signal and whatsapp. Still, the biggest question who did it. Russia is a major focus given moscows ties to wikileaks and the hacked emails during the 2016 campaign. Another question, how did it happen . Was the cia hacked . Was it an outside contractor as wikileaks claims or the nightmare scenario for the cia, a mole within the agency. Former Officials Say the hunt if its an inside source likely involves checking operatives travel schedules, contacts and even bank accounts. How badly has the leak compromised the cias mission after they say they only released 1 of what they have. They knew there was a breach late last year but didnt know what it was. And with relations already strained between Intelligence Community, at the white house more criticism. This is the kind of disclosure that undermines our country, our security an our wellbeing. Today the president will be meeting with his cia director, mike pompeo. No doubt well be told just how bad they think the damage is. The early focus is on those outside contractors. Obviously this investigation is just Getting Started but many people in positions such as yours think russia may be behind it. Whats the argument there, why are they a suspect . When you touch a document inside the cia, you leave digital fingerprints. Anybody who downloaded or accessed this material will become a suspect pretty quick so i think well figure out pretty quick who inside is a suspect. Two things make me think aou they have a connection to wikileaks and second, tensions between the Intelligence Community and russia are at an alltime high because of russia interference in our election. Lets talk about the possibility that andrea brought up, that it is a mole inside the cia. In other words, not a whistleblower but someone working on behalf of a foreign entity but employed by the cia. How plausible do you find that scenario . I think its a situation investigators will take seriously. It took 18 years who find aldridge james. If this information is bleeding out, people will have to come close to an investigative target and try to crack down on this fast. To be clear, these hacking tools that were in the cias arsenal were used to monitor and surveil adversaries overseas, but now its out. So the question is are americans hacking techniques used on them . I dont think so, savannah. Cia operations are conducted overseas against americas adversaries, against terrorists and our adversaries, not directed against americans. Once these vulnerabilities if you will in our security devices are out there, the device makers can actually shore up their defenses. So i think american devices are not at risk. Were learning that intelligence agencies may soon be slapped with subpoenas as lawmakers look for any evidence supporting the president s claim. The white house as you noted challenged congress to investigate President Trumps claim that president Obama Wiretapped his now two members of the Senate Judiciary committee, a democrat and a republican, are demanding answers. This morning bipartisan calls for the department of justice to offer proof of President Trumps claims that president Obama Wiretapped his campaign headquarte headquarters. President obama administrati targe his campaign in the trump tower. I have no knowledge of that but hes challenged the congress to help him so lets help. Lindsey graham and sheldon asking the department of justice to produce copies of any warrant applications and court orders related to wiretaps of trump, the Trump Campaign and trump tower. Graham telling kasie hunt that theyll subpoena if necessary. Theres no reason for them not to give it to us. All were asking for is a warrant issued. If they dont give it to us, yeah, ill subpoena. Reporter it comes as theyre clarifying whether or not trump wa t investigation. Press Secretary Sean Spicer saying this when asked about it at wednesdays briefing. Is the president the target of an investigation. I think thats what we need to find out. Reporter less than 20 minutes later, spicer circles back. I just want to be clear on one point. There is no reason that we have to think that the president is the target of any investigation whatsoever. Reporter and now were hearing how former president barack obama is reacting to the unsubstantiated wiretapping claims. A source close to the former president telling nbc news he rolled his eyes and believes the claims undermine the office of the president. President trumps man in moscow, jon huntsman. The former utah governor offered the job to be the next u. S. Ambassador to russia according to a senior white house official, with a source close to huntsman telling nbc news hes accepted. Last may huntsman endorsed mr. Trump for president but later called on him to withdraw following the revelat where mr. Trump is caught bragging about grabbing women without their consent. Apparently the two billionaires have now mended fences, with huntsman being taskd to navigate a very sensitive relationship. Plump had been a critic of huntsman mocking him on twitter as a lightweight and weak. The senate still has to confirm governor huntsman. As we mentioned, there was a dangerous situation overnight when tens of millions of americans found themselves unable to dial 911. This was a massive nationwide outage for at t customers and authorities were not happy about it. This morning the fcc is investigating the cause and nbcs jolene us. Last night many at t wireless customers couldnt get through to their 911 services from their cell phones forcing Law Enforcement agencies from coast to coast to alert residents about alternatives for any emergency. When at t wireless customers tried to dial 911, they got a busy signal instead. Some areas may have been without the Emergency Service for more than three hours. It quickly became evident this was a nationwide problem for the second largest carrier in the country. Law enforcement agencies from the east coast through parts of the south and out west urged callers to use local emergency news. The fire chief in florida said it was much more than annin sgleens the majority of our calls come through cell phones. It is gravely concerning to us. Reporter in pennsylvania the issue may have delayed Emergency Services from getting to the person with a medical issue. We know of one instance where there was a serious medical unable to get through at 9 00 tonight, which caused about a 10 on 15minute delay. Finally they were able to use a land line to connect with us. Reporter at t confirmed the outage and in a statement to nbc said we are aware of the nervous issue affecting some calls to 911 for wireless customers and were working to resolve it as quickly as possible. We apologize for this inconvenience. A little over 90 minutes later the company tweeted, saying that the issue had been resolved and apologized to those who were affected. Some responded on social media. Unacceptable in my humble opinion in response to a post at t sent out explaining the problem. Cant call 911 . Pathetic. Id be needing more than an apology. The head of the federal Communications Commission also tweeting the agency will investigate the root cause of the outage and its impacts. At t not yet commenting on what exactly caused this service problem, but we do know local emergency numbers did work in many cases, so handing handy in case it happens again. Now to an overnight arrest in tennessee in connection with the murder of a nashville nurse. A 24yearold man facing charges in a case that made headlines across the nation. Yes, this was a community in shock and mourning after the loss of a beloved nurse, tiffany ferguson, killed last month in a brutal stabbing inside her apartment. Now police say they have arrested the man responsible and are thanking that community for helping them finding him. This Morning Police say the search for the hooded figure is over. All the detectives, our patrol divisions and multiple precincts, so its been Overwhelming Community support to help bring this together. 24yearold Christopher Mclawhorn has been charged in connection with the murder of nashville nurse, tiffany ferguson. We believee apartment doors looking for easy access. This particular apartment door was open to him. During the course of the burglary of miss fergusons apartment, he committed a murder. Mclawhorn was first identified as a person of interest on sunday when he was arrested for misdemeanor drug possession. She really had a heart for nursing. Kelsey cooper was fergusons roommate and fellow nurse. She heard the screams and called 911. We felt safe. We never felt like anything like this could happen. Reporter so safe the College Friends planned to sign a new yearlong lease later that same day. Ferguson had worked at this nashville hospital for a year as an intensive care nurse after graduating from college in alabama. As friends and families gathered at her funeral on saturday, police were conducting an allout manhunt for her killer. Ms. Ferguson was a beloved member of the community, was somebody who served others and her passing and her murder was somethg community and this area. A Community Still shaken, now looking for closure. All right. So mclawhorn has previous arrests for public intoxication, misdemeanor theft. Theres been no word from the ferguson family but police say this community is hopeful that they can rest a little bit easier after this. They say at least two people stole several handguns and long guns at united gun shop on randolph road just a few hours ago. Its not clear how many guns were stolen at this point. They say an officer on routine patrol found a mans body near the Oakcrest Community center overnight. The man had trauma to his body. Police did not say exactly how he was ll information. Providing more details into her life since the death of her 2yearold daughter, caylee. We talked with the reporter who conducted a series of interviews with anthony after running into her unexpectedly. This morning, new audio from Casey Anthonys controversial interview about her daughter, caylee. Shes still the central part of my life, the central part of my being. Always with me. Anthony opening up about caylees murder in an interview with the associated press. Its just a blank spot . What the hell happened . Its not even that. Its something thats outside of me that if i knew at this point if i knew what actually happened, id be able to fill in those blanks. Its been almost six years since a florida jury cleared anthony of murdering caylee, among other charges. And in a new interview, she reveals whats happened in the years since. Ive done enough research, ive gone to enough psychology seminars, ive been tested, ive gone through the psychological evaluations, ive talked about this to the point where ive been in a puddle not being able to talk for days afterwards. But john allen, the lead detective in the case, says questions remain. I would love to have a chance to sit down and talk with her and ask her questions, but i wouldnt pin my hopes on that i would get truthful answers. Anthony did talk to a. P. Reporter joshua plogel who interviewed her five different times over the course of a week. I asked her several times why are you talking to me . I even told her, youre probably not going to like what i write. She told me she didnt know. But looking at her situation, she is isolated, she craves human contact. She needed someone to listen to her. I was in the right place at the right time. Far from hiding in the shadows, he says anthony enjoys all of the attention she receives. She enjoys it. She likes getting recognized. She told me, shes proud of her child . Anthony addressed that question head on. If im blessed enough to have another child, if id be dumb enough to bring another kid into this world knowing that there would be a potential that some jack [ bleep ], their little is it not nose kid would then Say Something mean to my kid, i dont think i could live with that. Anthonys interview has stirred up many reactions from those involved in the case, including her father, george, who issued a statement through his attorney that his daughter, quote, has once again pointed to him as a suspect. He says he has continued to try to move forward from this tragedy and has vindicated on multiple occasions. George added that he is forced to relive Casey Anthonys lies and allegations. In her first movie since then, she takes on king kong with kong skull island. Take a look. Run in here. Quiet. I bet the breath was terrible. I dont like that thing. It has too many teeth. King kong is usually enough for this movie but this has this other villainous creature. What is that creature . Its called a skull crawler. They go to this place weve never seen before so you never know whats going to top out. And its really incredible because it takes place in the 70s, post vietnam, which i think gives it a different feel. Its not in modern times or way back when, its a time period we dont often see movies about recently. I think its a great way that weve kind of twisted this genre on its head a little bit. Theres a completely new backdrop with completely new characters. The 70s are such a beautiful period of time. On top of it, its analog. Its before the ne left in the world. No snapping selfies with a skull crawler. No, none of that. When you think of king kong i think of a giant gorilla but also the kind of blonde girl that hes holding in his hand, or is that godzilla. No, thats king kong. But thats not exactly what your character is. No. Shes a self proclaimed antiwar photographer. Shes extremely brave, very tough, willing to risk her life every day. She still has that sense of heart and vulnerability and thats ultimately what saved all of them is that sense of empathy. But at the same time, shes not to be messed with. Youve been known of course for roles that are so different than this. This is like your first big budget action hollywood movie. Was it a much different experience . In some ways yes. I mean were in hawaii, australia, vietnam, deep in the jungle. Its a completely new experience and theres a lot more people involved in this than Something Like rome which is an independent. You and another actor, a camera, a microphone. Once you get on screen, its very intimate and the same. There were exotic locations, australia, vietnam, hawaii, samuel l. Jackson said dont be fooled by the glamour, it was hot and muggy and buggy. There was a lot of bugs. There was a lot of everything, actually. In the course of the six months of making this film and the three Different Countries we went to, it was extreme weather. It was 120 degrees some day. Some days we couldnt get to our set because we got rained out. Other days it was so cold that it started to hail. Thats kind of the beauty of this film. I think it is a story about nature and the way that weve separated ourselves from nature and try to control it and we had to battle that ourselves every day on set. If Mother Nature came in and said its going to rain today, it didnt matter what we wanted to shoot, we werent going to. No trailer with a jacuzzi. No. But i heard that you were the cruise director on the weekends, like the ring leader. Ye australia, we went roller skating. It looks like its a photo shopped picture, but it was just in the middle of this mall. Thats the same mall. Those are called animalls. Electric animals we rode through the mall for about an hour. Heres laser tag. One of my personal favorites. Nice. Is this a competitive bunch there . Oh, yes, definitely a competitive bunch. Thats what makes it fun. We just got through oscar season. You obviously won the oscar last year. This time you got to enjoy it. You were a presentier but got t enjoy the parties. What was that like . It was incredible. I think i got to take in more of it this year. I didnt have that added pressure of not being in this new atmosphere. I knew exactly when i was getting up on the stage this time. There was a little bit more space for me to just observe it and watch it and go, wow, a year has gone by and im just so again. As i understand it, you were shooting this movie when you won the oscar last year and you got right back on a plane the day after and flew back to vietnam. I flew from vietnam, like three different flights and i dont even know how many hours into l. A. Went to the awards and i think 6 00 a. M. The next morning i was back on a flight to vietnam. Were going to talk about personal shopper in a minute because it is an extraordinary film but weve got to talk about the haircut. What do you mean . Tell me about the look. This was yesterday you got this haircut . Yeah, yeah, yesterday. Im doing a movie in a couple of weeks called underwater and i play a mechanical engineer thats working an on the bottom of the ocean floor. So for me it was like its practical. I mean im not going to have to have touchups when i put the helmet on. I must shave my head. So you volunteered . Ive been wanting to do this for a long time just for novel sake. At some point in your life you want to be able to do that, and the director suggested it. I was like, whoa, thats a great idea. You know what, you should take credit for that one and i am game. Not a hard sell. You wear it well. Does it live up to your expectations . Feels good . Oh, my god, it feels amazing. I just want to head bang all day. Roll out of bed, youre distinguigood to go. Lets talk about this movie. It is so good, your performance is incredible and i dont know if solitary is the right word, but youre working as a personal shopper for someone you dont have much interaction with. How do you describe the character . Yeah,sh shes a foreigner in every sense of the word. Shes living in paris, shes an american, but shes also in the midst of the most devastating grief and loss. Shes lost her twin brother and, therefore, feels like a fractured sort of half of a person. She cant interact with the normal default setting so therefore she cant exist until she rebuilds herself after that devastating loss. It must have been an incredibly challenging role toin hacke to inhabit. I had three days in between to go from one character to the next and, yeah, there was no way to prepare for that part because she is a bit of a newborn. Like theres no that defines her. Shes just sort of shell shocked and in the midst of an existential crisis that also includes the question of the afterlife and whether or not we are alone at the end of the day or if there is some sort of connection that we have that you could call spirituality. Its a thriller, a kind of a ghost story. Are you a believer in ghosts yourself . Were you into the material . Yeah, the movie is scary, but i think its scary because its lofty and kind of heady and, you know, the ghosty aspects are confronting in a really sort of like realistic way, not in a way thats like, oh, what dead person is coming to talk to me. No casper the friendly ghost. But thats scarier. Sort of to lay your head down and go, okay, im never going to know anything. We dont know why were here. Some people just are go, yeah, thats something to think about but at the end of the day we have to carry on and live life and this girl is like shes in her head. Yeah. I said to you it almost felt like an updated hitchcock movie and you said thats appropriate because the director is a huge hitchcock fan. Oh man, yeah. Hes like hes been a film writer and a critic for years and years and years. And then a writer and a director for many years after that. Hitchcock is one of his boys. Hes obsessed. Talking about flexing a different muscle though, you got to host snl. How was that, and were you nervous . Oh, my god, all week i was like why have i done this . And then in the last hour, which is the live show, the process just catches you. Its like the most ultimate stressful and it was the most fun ive ever had in a really long time. You were t extraordinary in this movie. Personal shopper hits theaters tomorrow. Who could resist an invitation to dinner with the dalys. Well check out what carson and siri are cooking up. First, this is today on nbc. This morning this morning on todays food we are kicking off a fourweek series, called dining with the dalys. Carson and siri love to take time for cooking and entertaining so we asked them for a sneak peek of how you get this done every day. Youre a finely oiled machine is what you two are. Thats right. And that oil is olive oil. Thank you very much. All right. What are we making, siri. Today were making a salmon veggie bowl. Its healthy, its delicious. So carson is on salmon. Im al in a culinary crisis. I love to barbecue more than life itself, but i cant cook salmon because its disproportioned, my steaks are not that good so ive switched into searing off in a skillet and baking everything off. And its delicious. I dont barbecue as much. Hes not going to show you, hes just going to keep talking about it. Whoa, wow. Siri 1. This is what its like. Olive oil in a cast iron skillet. I let this get super super kid. I tell the kids, get away from this area because its going to get hot. But ill put it down, flush side down, maybe about four minutes and just go ahead and let it sear. Ill do the sides. Ill flip it over for a minute. Salt and pepper, i usually dont overseason the fish. Then ill take this off and throw it in the oven once its seared and bake it about 8 minutes in the oven. 400 degree ov minutes for rare. Now well do some veggies. This is kale and sweet potatoes. Ive washed it and chop it. This is where i make myself a cocktail. And were going to throw this in a 400degree oven also about 20 minutes. Flip it about halfway and that will make your kale nice and crispy. Crispy kale is so delicious. It is, it is. And these are crunchy garbanzo beans. The trick is to make them crunchy, take off the skin. That sounds like a pain. Its tedious. We make our children do that. Give them a dollar an hour. There you go. So you peel each chick pea. You dont have to do that but it will get a crunchier chick pea. I have a website with just the peels from the garbanzo beans. No powder, garlic and salt. In this hot pan, theres oil already there. Well add the chickpeas and been 10 to 12 minutes theyll get nice and crunchy. Over here we have some. You can try it and make a bowl. The bowl is really your thing. This is a popular thing, the bowl. I dont know much about it. What are we doing . We add our salmon. These are like corn nuts. Yeah, they do, dont they . I like to put some avocado on mine. The best thing about these type of meals are theyre versatile. You can sub out the salmon and use chicken. We just like to put food out and let people build stuff. I love it. It looks very healthy. So now with some of the exact same ingredients, were going to make something for the kids. If k that are crispy and things to dip. Thats all i know about kids. So over here is with rice, cheddar cheese, grated onions, sweet potato and kale. That way its the same ingredients. Do you want to add those eggs. Four eggs and thats going to help bind it altogether. Once you do form them, put them in the fridge about 30 minutes so they dont fall apart when you cook them. I might try this. Do you think your kids would eat this . Absolutely. I like the bowl format. I like when you throw stuff in the bowl. The kfc bowl, get it all in one place for me. In a Yale University study, the recognizable scent behind coffee and Peanut Butter. Our factory is 550,000 square feet. We employ over 600 employees and mch 3 billion crayons a year. The crayola brand was born in 1903 with its 8count box which sold for a mere nickel. Over time innovations such as the builtin sharpener helped the company leave its mark in art supplies.
