You never want to hear of anyone getting a cancer diagnosidiagno when i got ago about someone near to me. A growing number of families are being affected just like mine. Few people are as close to death every day lawrence meadows. Hes the coowner of a funeral home in spartanburg, south carolina. Its a callg guided by a faith he had since he was a boy. At this church, hes not just a member, hes t pastor. We ought to take time out of our schedule and pray sometimes. All his life, hes been active and healthy. I know beu ve known him all my life. Lawrence is my older brother. But now at the age of 39, hes been diagnosed with stage iv colon cancer. I could not get my head around it being you because youve always been no spoking, no drinking. Yeah. No partying. Yeah, i was like, man, god. I should have drunking and smoking and doing all that other stuff if im going to have the diagnosis. The other stuff in too. Thats lawrence in his funeral ho talking about a potentially deadly diagnosis but doing what hes done since we were little cracki jokes. His doctor removed a baseball sized tumor from his abdomen. But the cancer has spread. Now he spends a lot of time at the Cancer Center in houston. This is the lining of the abdomen. His doctor says he is seeing a troubling trend with early onset cases, meaning patients under 45. Were expecting the incidents will contin to rise and may increase by about 50 over the next 15 years. The doctor says africanamerire twice as likely to develop early onset colon cancer as whites. And theres a white gap in the survival rates. Whats most troubling is experts cant figure o why. They have detected gti lawrence had no markers. We recommend relatives of patients have their first colonoscopy ten years before onset. As soon as you hit 29. This is part of the problem with early onset cases. Most people should start getting regular colonoscopies at the age of 50. For higher g 45. No help to lawrence and our family. Shes not ardeath . How often ynkbt . Every day i look at my children, who, you know, especy our son, both of kids, but lawson adores his daddy. You know, its hard to look at that little boy wheres my dad and just think, you know, he doesnt know keeping the cancer at bay. Which means flying to houston every other week for chemo treatments. We were there when lawrence got the results of his latest round of tests. Our goal was to try to stop its growth. Certainly accomplished that but i think eve better was the shrinkage of t cancer. The doctor even showed us where its shrinking. There is no cure for colon cancer. Its like cutting grass. Cut it back, cut it back, cut it back till eventually it just dies. Back in south carolina, he is determined. Dot veor fights to pick. This is it. This is the omfight im focused on. I got you. Evicting cancer from me. With the suppo of family and his doctors, lawrence leans on a faith thats defined his life. Hoping and praying for gods grace. So lawrence has five more rounds of chemo until his next ct scan. Ive interviewed you at times when the fierce competitor comes out. You mentioned sochi. How much of this isou career on what happened there . I was in the lobby and getting interviewed. They asked, when did you get over sochi . Im like, i didnt. You dont. To be honest, it is like falling off the bike and you have the scar from it. It is a part of you. Its something to learn from. Im definitely learning, and im back. Some of your moves have become the gold standard, as we say. Do you have anything new that you are cooking up in your brain that you might show us in korea . There plenty of things. Im heading there for a test event in the next couple of days to compete. A lot of new tricks. I dont want to spill the beans just yet, but a lot of new stuff thats coming. Im feeling stronger than ever, more focused. Should be a great one. Theres a lot of experimenting and innovating that goes on as were talking about in your line of the work. We were just talking, how do you handle a run right after a run where you have crashed horribly . How do you get back on the board . Good question. In the heat of the moment, im pretty im probably very im very upset with my performance. Because i probably knew what to do, and i if i could turn back time, i would do it differently, the correct way. Youre so in the heat of the moment, you get back up there and do it again without thinking. Thinking is usually the thing that gets in the way. Unfortunately, as you get older, you think more. Is there someone youre looking at saying, ive got to make sure im better than that guy . Who is that guy . You know, like what was mentioned earlier, it is usually yourself. Youre your own enemy at times. The last competitions, a japanese snowboarding, yuri, who won the last olympics, great guy, friend of mine. We go from event to event. You learn from it and keep going. There is a slope style, a series of jumps, and now big air will be featured in 2018 in korea. Our event is actually big air. How do you keep your mind focused and not let it get to you . For me, it is just fire. It is a chance to improve. Im just looking to win next years nationals so i can, you know, take back my crown, so to speak. When you focus, are you focusing on the nationals or the olympics .
