Well pull out the crystal ball for a look at what 2013 has in store, when it comes to things like politics and the economy. The president , of course, facing a number of challenges in the second term as he tries to fulfill his Campaign Promise to boost the still struggling job market. Well talk about that and much more with chuck todd and jim cramer straight ahead. What well all be watching, wearing and playing with in the months to come. Call me a mind reader. I can tell you one of the top stories of 2013. Of course, its going to be the birth of the duke and duchess of cambridges baby. And coming up, well talk about the preparations under way at Kensington Palace for his or her arrival and what it will mean for the royal family. There has been a breakthrough that could affect everyones pocketbook, but it happened with time nearly running out. Three hours before the midnight deadline and the Vice President arrived on capitol hill. Happy new year. Did you think we would be here new years eve . Reporter joe biden moved from key negotiator to his pa y partys closer, meeting behind closed doors with fellow democrats to make his case for his package. You shouldnt predict how the senate is going to vote before they vote. You wont make a lot of money and number two, you surely shouldnt predict how the house is going to vote. Reporter instead of sweeping tax increases for everyone, new higher rates would hit those making over 400,000 a year, 450,000 for couples. Plus higher rates on savings, investments and large inheritances. Overall, tax increases of about 600 billion over ten years. Both parties compromised on taxes to mixed reviews. It does not address the number one priority, creating good, middleclass jobs now. I dont love it, but i think it is a very good job of negotiating where there are some wins and some losses and its about even. Reporter the plan would also delay acrosstheboard spending cuts for defense and most federal aagencies but only for two months, kicking the can on tough decisions to reduce government spending. Republicans wanted more cuts now. Its not even a small ball, its a ping pong ball of a proposal. I think its awful. Reporter the wait for a senate vote went deep into the night. Hours passed for the actual bill to be written. By the time even some new years revelers were worn out, the Senate Finally voted. The ayes are 89. The nays are 8. It does not mean negotiations halt. Far from it. This shouldnt be the model for how we do things around here, but i think we can say weve done some good for the country. Reporter and passing in the senate is just one step. The house of representatives comes back today. Theyll take a look at it. There is a hope because both democrats and republicans so overwhelmingly passed in the senate it can get through. As you heard, there will be new rounds of negotiations that are triggered but this deadline could get by with a resolution. Andrea . A lot of action on capitol hill. Thanks so much, kelly. It passed 898 votes. Will it clear the house . Its going to clear the house. I spoke with someone very close to the republican leadership. Yes, the sentiment that was expressed in kellys piece is very close to what Speaker Boehner said. They hate the bill. They dont like the bill but 89 votes is a real message. You have literally only a hand ful of democrats and a handful of republicans in the senate that voted against this thing in single digits. This means it will get through the house. It may be about 100, 110 republicans aat be s at best, b message was pretty clear and theres not much Speaker Boehner can do about it. They almost feel that the senate, in voting in those numbers, handcuffed the leadership, forcing them not to change the bill, throw it on there, not be happy about it, but live to fight another day. Nancy pelosi and the democrats signed off on it. There may be more democratic votes that pass this house than republican votes at the end of the day, but it will pass. What kind of challenge does it face for the future when you see this kind of contentious situation going on for both sides . It means well have more of the same in the next, at least, three months. We have this whole setup coming up here in march. The fiscal cliff. Well not sort of have this march madness of budget fights coming up. She has a blood clot just below her ear on a blood vessel that drains blood from the brain but critically, its not in the brain itself, which makes a difference in the prognosis. Its still a dangerous situation. You can see where the red dot there is on the diagram. Its being dissolved with blood thinners and over a period of days and all indications are that she will make a complete recovery. This is a dangerous situation, but shes going to be fine. Andrea . Her doctors say the secretary of state should fully recover from the blood clot she suffered as a result of a concussion. Robert bazell is at the new york City Hospital where mrs. Clinton is being treated. Robert, good morning. Reporter good morning, andrea. It turns out that its a lot worse than people imagined it could be when she first got in here. But the treatment is successful. They dissolved the blood clot in a vessel in her brain by her near. The good news is that its not in the brain. It could have spread to the brain and cause aid stroke. That did not happen. The doctors say theres no sign of neurological damage. She is expected to be at the hospital a few days and make a full recovery, which is very good news, indeed, for everybody here that are glad to hear that. Thats it from the hospital here on the Upper West Side of manhattan. Have people been coming and going . Is she seeing a lot of family . An awful time to be stuck in the hospital. Reporter it is an awful time. We understand her family has been with her a lot. They come in through side doors. We dont see them come in and out. We understand the family has been by her side. Everybody says shes in good spirits, communicating. Theres absolutely no evidence of any kind of neurological damage from this, which is the best possible outcome. Some people were talking about future runs she may make or how this will affect perception of Hillary Clinton in the future and her health. So, do you think that this is just a small health scare for her that should not affect her future . Reporter it should not. I spoke to doctors who did not treat mrs. Clinton but treat this had similar situation and they say theres absolutely no reason to think she will not make a full recovery. She will probably have to be on blood thinners the rest of her life or at least a long time. That doesnt affect how she can carry out her life and get back to a very busy schedule. Certainly has to take it easy for a few weeks or a few months. That shouldnt be a problem. The pattern is that we start off really strong and committed, do these strict diet plans and by week four we fall off the wagon. Were going to start off with one small manageable goal and well conquer it this week. Next week well add on another and by the sixth week, you are slimmer and feeling great and you have gained momentum versus losing momentum. You call this small but i think its big. Exercise for 30 minutes a day, but walking counts. Anyone can do it. You can even break it up. Walking starts your metabolism, you burn calories. It puts you in a positive mindset so you make great decisions. Lose the soda. One 20ounce soda is 250 calories. If you just lose one each and every day, you saved enough calories at the end of the year to lose 26 pounds. Good to cut out diet soda, too . Its great if you can cut out diet soda. Ideally you want to replace it with water. Eat a highprotein breakfast. For example . Eggs, cheese, lean bacon, canadian bacon. When you have protein in your morning meal it helps to stabilize your blood sugars so that then you dont crave as much during the day. You will lose more weight. Nonfat greek yogurt with a banana. Thats a lot of yogurt. Thats a small container. Perfectly fine. Another tip you have is to add more produce. At least one cup of produce, fruits and vegetables with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Its high in volume and its low in calories. It helps to fill you up without filling you out. I love this next tip. Brown bag your lunch. We have the brown bag as an example here. When you prep your lunch at home youre not only saving cash but calories as well. You control what goes into your food and what stays out. When you bring your Brown Bag Lunch to work youre much less apt to cave for your coworkers, burgers and fries or pepperoni pizza. Whats a good taketowork lunch that you like . Easily you can make a turkey sandwich. Pull back on the starch at each and every meal. This turkey sandwich here, i lost the top slice of bread. You can save yourself 100 calories. Thats a great goal, too. If you have pasta, add more vegetables and cut down on the pasta portion of it . Right. This has one cup of cooked pasta with two cups of vegetables. You still get a great big bowl but the calories are way lower. Last one is put your tv on a diet. Explain that. We have hard data that shows that people who lost significant amounts of weight lost ten hours of television a day. So a great goal is to only watch two hours of tv each and every day. Of course, it should be the today show. Bad news for us grazers, close the kitchen after dinner . A lot of people cant control the nighttime nibbling. Get out of the kitchen. Brush and floss your teeth, sip on a nice decaffinated tea. Anything that gets you out of the kitchen. Gail salts is a today contributor. You say people need to own up what they need to change. If youre not honest with yourself, youre not going to be able to make change. You have to write down your goals. Correct. Why is that so important . Otherwise we use denial. I didnt really say that. We know we said it. But you dont actually. In a month you dont. The brain is like that. If you write it town, its concrete. And you put it some place you have to see all the time. On the refrigerator, on your screen savor so you constantly in a way are reminded, yes, i said that. Whats this thing you call, a journal of why. If you dont look at the deeper reason that you keep this habit that you want to break, youre not going to break it. Theres sort of like a little self analysis. You dont exercise. Why . If you really think about it, because you stunk in gym class. You dont think of yourself as athletic and thats what keeps you from making the move. Understand the reason behind it. How do you feel about personal bribes or the better word would be incentive. I want to work out more and if i stick to my pln i go out and buy something i like. Humans are mammals. Mammals respond to incentives. Its positive behavioral training. It works. The carrot on the stick. If i did this and i keep the weight off for three months i get a cute workout out fit, whatever it is that would sparkle your day. Im not sure a cute workout out fit would work. Maybe not for you. Tell someone else what you plan to do. Its easy to cheat on yourself. When you put people around you, your family, your loved ones and tell them what you want to accomplish, it will keep you in check. Even if they dont say anything. You know they know and you keep in check. Lets switch over to the more emotional side of this for a second. One thing you would like people to try in 2013 i have to say i like this is be more present in the moment. Explain that. People are very future oriented. Thats what keeps us anxious and stressed. Were so distracted that we dont think about whats going on in this moment. And i mean the grass is green. My coffee tastes delicious. I really like you, matt. Those present things make life more meaningful and actually destress you and they actually make life more enjoyable. You want people to practice stress reduction. Maybe easier said than done but important. Then you would like them to create some kind of gratitude list. Gratitude makes you happier when you actually experience it. If you write down three things a day that you felt grateful for that day, i love my cup of coffee. Ive had such nice conversation with you. Little things even. Practiced over time, the data shows that it makes you happier. When youre feeling happy and feeling warm towards someone, share that love. That also makes you feel better. We dont tell people we love them or even like them. And relationships are the number one force of happiness, not money. So, strengthen those by sharing your positive feelings. Come on, you can fold. You do it little bit by little bit . Great fold, natalie. You were up late last night. Well, no, no. Now we have the as pair asparagus and tomatoes simmering. Salt and pepper. Hit hit me with some pepper. Okay. Asparagus and tomato already saw todaying in olive oil. Put this in. You let it cook. Lift up the edges, which takes about five minutes. You finish it in the oven at 350 for about seven minutes. Its that easy . You dont have to be slaving over the stove when your guests come. Looks gorgeous. See how nice and fluffy it is . Then you add in the brown sugar, the butter, cut butter. And then you put it in the oven for about 45 minutes to an hour at 400 degrees and you come out and this is what it looks like. Beautiful. Really, really easy. And then its cranberry time. I cook some up with orange juice until they burst. You can put it as a compote and, of course, some warm maim syrup warm maple syrup. Many of us rely on it. Its not fool proof. Well, its not fool proof, but the thing to remember is that even though we say the gut, its still your brain. So whats happening is focused through your brain, but its a matter of saying do i need to make a quick decision and not focus on a list and just make the decision. Sometimes theres like a physical reaction. Lets say someone is walking down the street, and you feel spooked, and your gut tells you im not i shouldnt stay here, i feel uncomfortable, i should cross the street. Should you just follow what is going on there . You absolutely should. When theres a situation that you feel in danger, Pay Attention to it. The thing is that society has trained us to be polite, so often we ignore those gut feelings. If weve been trained to be thats a little different. This is more you dont want to offend someone. You want to make them feel comfortable when you feel very uncomfortable. Thats part of the whole agenda as well if its something weve been trained. Give them a chance. You dont know who they are. They may be going for a new look. If you feel like something is not right, cross that street. You do get physical symptoms. Your heart may sweat, your heart may race. There are physical signs. Sometimes if you lets pretend someone has hurt me in the past physically, and i walk down the street and get a bad feeling. Im used to that, and im afraid of more things. Sometimes your gut isnt right, is it . Theres a difference between insight, which is made on those decision that is are in your awareness, youve had a past experience. What were talking about intuition is something that just pops up, and it really brings the unconscious to your awareness, and it gives aun opportunity to make a quick decision. Hopefully youll use your intuition, but were not talking about if you have lost thousands of dollars doing one thing to keep doing that. You have to Pay Attention to the past, but be willing to just jump in. Lets pretend youre at the doctors office, and you dont feel good, and the doctor says, look, its many your head, youre fine. Inside you keep thinking to yourself i dont feel good. Whats your gut is telling thaw the doctor is wrong, but he or she is the doctor. Supposedly the expert. Physicians may overlook certain symptoms, especially if you are a young and Healthy Woman simply because they may dismiss your fears as paranoia. Male physicians can do that. They can attribute it to depression or pms. Nobody knows your body like you do, so if you feel your physician is not paying something that you feel you have a hunch is wrong, get a second opinion. People say its paranoia and not intuition. If youre not sure if im having tu troouly this gut feeling or being a hypocondriac. When its fear, you have more emotionallycharged emotions. When its intuition, its oddly impersonal. People who rely on their intuition are more adaptable and go with the flow, whereas those who always have the measure the maximizers tend to be per fictionists, and they can be harder on themselves at the end of a decision. Yeah. Sometimes if you are intug someone, lets say, for a job, someone can be very charming, and you can say, wow, im really taken with them. I like them. Your instinct may tell you your intuition may tell you theyre a good person, but deep down inside you dont know the layers. Sometimes youre off. They might be good if they want something. You have to be aware of that. This would be a situation where i would recommend using your head over your gut because someones personality can certainly lure you in and remind you of a close friend and you would be more inclined to potentially hire them. However, you really need to look at their work history, their recommendation letters, and put some thought behind it. Dont be impulsive with this decision. Not saying to not look at manufacturings if you have it in front of you, but sometimes there are times you dont have that information, and its truly okay to go with what you feel, if with your instinct. The times i havent trusted my gut ive been sorry after. Its there for a reason. New year, new you, trust your gut. Thank you, ladies. The camera there is monitoring all of his actions. He is dancing. The only thing is for navigating a menu, its a little difficult. Still not quite as easy as pushing buttons, but at least the kids are moving in front of something and not sitting at it. Theyre getting some exercise, which i think is awesome. That is the truth. Thats cool. I actually have something thats coming new for 2013. Its a camera from samsung. Im actually going to use these as a tripod. If you come stand back here i have been used for worse. I am going to use it, and im going to use hand motions to take a picture. Oh. You just took your own picture . Yeah. Hang on. Im going to try one more time. I can actually use it to see how its zooming in. Im going to zoom the lens. Oh, my gosh. Im framing up my picture. One more time. Ah. Yes, its it operates with just your base user interface, and that means you can get in the shot. Normally it works. All right. Our next tech trend is mobile payments. Everybody is trying to figure out how to get your mobile phone to be your wallet in a safe and secure way. What we have right now is something that is popping up many some stores called google wallet. This uses a new technology called year field. Its not available in all phones. Its limited to the android. Its sort of being slow to catch on. Whats coming is this new technology called level up. Its a new app. Can i see you like. I really like it. Its on my phone. Now, it knows where you are, so its going to show me here that i am at the nbc store and then so there is me at the nbc store, and then when im ready to pay, im just going to wave it in front of this device at my retailer. Now thats my phone, and i pay with my credit card. Theres no credit card information on the app, so its very secure. Nobody can scan it. Thats right. Thats right. Now when you if to the apple store. How fun to be able to do that in other places . Theyre catching on with thousands of retailers already. More and more. Available for iphones as well as android. Okay. My phone wont work on that, though . You need to replace it. Junker. Well talk. Our next trend is the internet of things. If you havent heard this term yet, youll hear a lot of it. Its basically about how physical objects are being armed with wireless sensors that you can talk to, that talk to app and give you information. I think the example we all know right now is the nike plus that fwz many your shoe, and it tells you where you ran and how far. Right. Whats coming, brand new from phillips is a system called hugh. These are light bulbs that go into your regular lamp, led light bulbs. They last forever. And you can control them with your device. What is going on . So check this out. Not only can you dim them, but you can change their color, and you can set all these different mood settings for them. Oh, need. I love it. From your ipad. Thats so cool. Our last tech trend is wearable tech. The lines are literally being blurred between what is clothing, what is technology. Tech is literally being sewn into the fabric of our clothes. This is something that exists right now. Its the contour camera that can you strap to your helmet and you get a birds eye view of what you are doing. Whats coming, and this is brand new. Its not available yet. This is a little device called momoto. You put it on the clothing. When its vertical, it knows that its on, and it is taking pictures. Its literally giving you a photographic memory. You better be careful what you do. Thats right. At the end of the day, you can literally see things that you had forgotten. Theres memories that you didnt even really absorb, and its a way to be reflective, and its very seamless. Theres all kinds of things coming with tshirts that can read your twitter feed and project it and take pictures of your friends. Youre starting to scare me. Im nervous, but thank you. 2013. No city knows how to have a good time better than new orleans, and its really bounced back. Also three movies with a lot of oscar buzz. Beats of the southern wild and django unchained and looper were all filmed there. Its a revitalized city. 2013 is when the super bowl will be hosted there. Marched where i grau, which is february 12th, will make it the city to be in new orleans. Exhausted if you live there. Funky monkey. Thats a good one. To our neighbors up north, toronto. Toronto. This is an overlooked city, but it is a really wonderful and very sophisticated city. It has a thriving performing arts scene. Theater is fantastic there and concerts and stuff. It also has some really wonderful fest cals that have open to the public. The french festival this summer is really fun, and, of course, their Film Festival in september, its the largest public Film Festival in north america. Really great. Theyve made it so easy to do it there, and then financially viable. Financially, yeah. It had a bit of a building boom in the past few years, so a lot of new restaurants have opened.
