investigators are learning more about his nightmare, today is saturday, may 14, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a saturday. i'm lester holt. >> i'm amy robach. it's a painful choice in louisiana today. who gets flooded and who gets spared. >> a classic between a rock and a hard place. no good decision. one that's less bad. army engineers open the morganza spillway. thousands of homes and farms could be under 25 feet of water when they do that, the first time they unlock that flood gate in decades, but doing so will avert a bigger disaster in new orleans and baton rouge. much bigger cities, officials say. they'll open the spillway slowly over a few days to give people time to evacuate. the late nest a moment. jury selection continues in a casey anthony murder trial. the judge ordered attorneys and potential jurors to seat a jury. anthony is accusal of killing her daughter caylee in 2008. we'll go to fl forida for the latest. >> they're going to have to speed up. they spent three hours questioning one juror. that's someone who doesn't know too much about the case. a lot of that coming up. plus, the jersey girls are back in what may be the most sizzling drama yet. seizing these of the house wives of new jersey begins with a bang -- or rather a brawl you can see here. the ladies will dish about the new season that promises to be filled with lots of drama. we'll give them plenty of room when they come in. >> whose family does that? >> don't anybody upset them. >> that's at a baby chrysening, by the way. >> is it? >> yes. lovely, pictures, photos, cake. here they come walking down the street. the monkeys. fictional tv band and real live stars are reunited for a tour 20 years later. catch with the iconic band in the next hour. >> can't wait for that. the flooding along the mississippi river in the move to open the flood gate. ann thompson filed this report along the mississippi river. >> these are desperate hours in louisiana. residents waited in long lines for supplies to defend hair hth homes. the mississippi flood water that will flood their neighborhood when the morganza dam is open to save new orleans and baton rouge. >> i'm not agreeable in opening up the gate. no. not agreeing with that. >> upriver in vicksburg, mississippi, highway 61, a main thoroughfare, is closed so crews can build a levee to keep the water at bay. this farmer is doing the same, using dirt from his corn field to construct a 19-foot wall of mud around his house. >> i don't have flood insurance so i have to try to save it, you know? >> in baton rouge, neon colored tiger dams are rolled out to protect louisiana's capital city. but 10% of the state's on shore oil production is in the flood zone. more than 2200 wells that produce 19,000 barrels of oil a day. a drop in the bucket compared to the 19 million barrels america consumes each day but enough to calm a jittery oil market. >> a lot of attention in the oil market. any disruption no matter how small has the potential to affect pricing without question. >> at the north end of baton rouge is the exxon mobile refinery. the second largest in the country. it remains open for now as does the mississippi river to shipping. as the dirty water heads south, there are growing concerns about the hidden toxins in the debris, health threats that won't be become known for years. for louisianians, you can still hear the sound of optimism. >> we are completely surrounded by levees. we have good pumping stations. i have to fell good that the parish itself can handle all this. >> for "today," ann thompson, nbc news, baton rouge. >> tan trong is in vicksburg, mississippi. what's the latest on opening the flood gate? do we have a timeline? >> the army corps of engineers are set to open up the flood gates as early as today. it' not just people. wild animals are finding themselves in familiar territory. the worst flood in more than half a century has swallowed millions of acres of land, sending thousands of residents to seek higher ground while countless wild animals struggle to do the same, the coyote in mississippi swims foris life. >> animals are like human, it's about survival, they want to live. >> natural habitats. >> all they're looking for is dry ground. they just want to be dry. >> many stranded like this raccoon on top of a pole and a wild hog in water. deer are racing for whatever dry land they can find. >> these animals are running. we're seeing deer-vehicle collisions. >> in mississippi, alligators are closer to neighborhoods than ever before as we travelled to flooded communities, water moccasins swimming along what used to be streets is a common sight. the flooding is pushing animals away from the areas and towards civilization. >> as animals are flushed out, unlikely encounters here are taking place. they say a gator claimed a dog. >> alligators, more room to roam. stay away from them. they're not going to bother you if you don't bother them. >> the impact on the animals and the future generations is unclear. for now, it's simply about staying above water. >> the last time this area saw this kind of flooding -- and the last time the area saw this type of flooding was back in 1927. the river is expected to crest later this week on thursday. meanwhile, both man and beast will try to find shelter. lester? >> tan trong in mississippi. thanks. >> oh. >> for more on the path of the floods, we're joined by bill karins. good morning. >> good morning. a slow, painful disaster. once in a lifetime flooding is what we're dealing with. the crest on the mississippi, north of greenville, it will hit record levels, levels never seen before, vicksburg, sunday, natchez later today. baton rouge, there's a spillway opening up north of baton rouge. they say the water levels will be 12 to 18 inches lower than predicted because they're going to open the spillway and that will protect the city of baton rouge and keep the water levels below the levee there. this -- the history of this flood is for all of the areas, not near cities, all of the areas with low eer levees have been flooding. back to you, amy. turning now to the presidential politics where the pool of exon tenders widened. one more republican threw his hat in the ring. the other is expected to make an announcement today. john harwood is the chief correspondent. he joins us from washington. good morning. >> good morning. good week for republicans gearing up to 2012. ron paul launching the third bid for the white house. newt gingrich making his first bid for the white house. mitt romney continuing to defend his health reform, his approach to health care. what do you make of this early batch of candidates? >> it's not complete yet. we're waiting to hear from mitch daniels, the governor of indiana, who might be the most competitive republican candidate of all. he hasn't decided yet. but we're seeing an unsettled field. republicans are unsure whether it's worth it to challenge president obama with a weak economy, he has some vulnerability. but this is a field without a front-runner. mitt romney is the closest thing we had to that. but we saw it in the health care speech he gave the other day that he has clear explaining to do for a central domestic policy initiative that looks like president obama's. >> meanwhile, mike huckabee is expected to make an announcement later today about whether or not to run for president. a lot of people think he'll make an announcement that he will not run. what do you say? >> ed raw lins ran his campaign as the strategist four years ago, that he doesn't expect mike huckabee to run. he's got a job on the fox network hosting. he's making a lot of money giving speeches. mike huckabee is somebody who could be formidable in this race. he's got a lot of support from social conservatives. business conservatives don't like him too much because pof the record in arkansas. he raised taxes too much, they think. if he's so comfortable in his life after politics that he doesn't want to juch back in. ed rawlings thinks it's exactly the decision he'll make today. >> indiana governor mitch daniels, an interesting situation this week where we have the former first lady, laura bush calling daniels' wife sherry to encourage her to support a presidential bid for her husband. what is this gop push for daniels say about the republican party so far? >> they're looking for somebody in the party to survive the primary process and take on president obama. mitch daniels someone with a record of fiscal conservatism, and george bush attacked him when we went to surplus to deficits as a result of the bush tax cuts. he's a fresh face, a gubernatorial record. but he's got real family reservations. i talked to people close to mitch daniels. they think it's more likely than not that he's going to run. but real reservations from his wife and children. we don't know -- nobody knows how that decision will come out yet. >> which candidate has the most to lose if daniels does jump in. >> mitt romney. mitt romney is more likely than not in this republican field right now, you probably have two people who have a real shot at being both nominated and elected. that's mitt romney and tim pawlenty. newt gingrich has a low ceiling of support. a lot of people don't know him and don't like him. if mitch daniels got in his face, that's a real threat to the other two candidates because he's somebody that doesn't have the same kind of baggage that other candidates have. he could rally a lot of the bush forces behind him. a lot of the bush political strategists believe he would be the strongest candidate. the question is, does he have the commitment and the determination and the consent from his family to do that? bill, thank you. what began as a minor high school disciplinary case has become an international sensation thanks to social media. a student in connecticut thought up an elaborate way to ask his date to the prom. but his grand gesture got him suspended and banned from the dance. we have the story. >> reporter: it all started with the writing on the wam. late last week in the dead of night, shelton high school senior james tate and two friends dragged a ladder and 12 inch card board letters to campus taping this message to the school wall, sonali rodriguez, will you go to prom with me. rodriguez, a classmate and friend said yes. but school officials said no, suspending tate and his friends for trespassing and banning him from the june 4 prom. as news spread, so did the outrage. >> i think it's kind of ridiculous. >> it went viral. supporters gathered on-line, enchanted by the romance of it all, thousands tweeting words of encouragement. the let james tate goes to the prom facebook page has 180,000 fans. the town's mayor says he's been inundated by e-mails far beyond connecticut. >> china, japan, australia. every last one supporting tate. >> it doesn't make sense. there has to be common sense. >> not everyone has been swayed. thursday, the school's head mapser made one thing clear -- rules are rules. >> students receiving an in school or out of school suspension after april 1 for any reason would not be allowed to attend the prom. >> while tate's sorry for his message on this wall. >> i'm sorry. it won't happen again from me and i would like to go to prom very much with her. >> on-line supporters vow to keep up the fight on this one. for today, mara skiacampo, nbc news, shelton, connecticut. today, james tate is still banned from the prom. he's considering an offer to send him and a date to dinner with a limo. the story continues. one major thing missing from the scorecard today at the players' championship, tiger woods. on thursday, woods withdrew from the golf tournament because of an injury, raising questions about his future and the rest of the field. golf channel on nbc analyst mark rolfing join s us from ponte vedra, florida. >> good morning. >> will this sideline tiger for a while as he tries to make a comeback. >> i think this injury is more serious than tiger has let on and maybe even more serious than what he has thought. at this point, he can't pinpoint whether it's his knee or his achilles heel. but both of the injuries are going to need some rests because the u.s. open is five weeks away. he came back too early. no doubt he should not have teed off at the players. but if he gives it a month's rest, is there a chance he'll be ready for the u.s. open. but i think long term, he needs to look at this and really decide how he's going to go forward playing this game. i don't think he's going to be able to play the way he has early in his career, which is very aggressive, which has put a lot of pressure on his left leg and clearly it's taking its toll. >> he hasn't won a major since his marital problems. he's done well at times. is it safe to say it's possible that he's past his prime? >> i was able to move on. >> it's a different show. >> it's different because that drama overshadowed the rest of the drama that goes on. a whole different drama. >> everybody will get their own drama. >> yeah. >> speaking of family. kathy, melissa, you're the newcomers. melissa, you're tereasa's sister-in-law, you're tereasa's cousin. you're all in the family now. what type of dynamic is that like especially in a public setting? >> it's difficult. it's extremely difficult. it's playing out all in front of the cameras and a lot of emotion you're going to see and a lot of real family issues that go on that i believe happen in homes across america. it's unfortunate they captured my son's christening and you're going to see a lot of fun times. >> your husband and tereasa get into it in the christening, correct? >> yeah. yeah. >> do you defend your husband's actions? he got upset. >> i think you're going to see -- as the episodes go on, you're going to see why he reacted the way he did. >> yeah. >> it's not something that today i'm going to have it out with my sister. there's things that went on throughout the relationship. you'll see the changes with any relationship, brother and sister, cousin, you will see a lot of the history play out. >> caroline, your two sons, an emptier nest this season. >> they left me. >> what's that like for you? >> the most bizarre feeling because you're so proud of them and you want them to go out and live their life and take the world by storm and you're like, don't go, don't leave me! it's life, right? i'm dealing with it. i'll be fine. >> you're dealing with conflicts with your daughter, ashlee. is it more difficult to do the right thing as a parent when everybody is watching you. >> just watching it, i see things that i do -- >> watch b yourself played back on television has to be crazy. >> it's good because i thought why didn't i realize this is my delivery or how she's taking it. i can see it through my eyes and i hope she sees it through mine. >> we're seeing a lot more of the men. how do your husbands feel about their increased role? they are comic relief, bigtime. it's funny. they have a lot of fun moments. >> we have housewives because of our husbands. >> the chemistry is fabulous. >> it is. >> they don't fight? >> men don't fight with each other. >> a little bit to say. >> yeah. >> we drag things out a little bit. >> god bless the men. >> caroline, we're in -- well, you're in the three seasons now. and you made it clear last season's reunion special that you can't blame the editing for how everyone is portrayed. and now that you've been doing this for sometime, do you have regrets from putting it out there, the bad, the ugly. there's good. but people tend to talk about the bad and the ugly? >> opening statements in this murder trial are scheduled for tuesday. so the judge is unusually calling 21 potential jurors in on saturday to continue the process of trying to impanel a jury. this is day six in that process. the goal is to get 12 jurors plus eight alternates who after they were impanelled taken here to clearwater, florida moved now where the next eight weeks they will lp to testimony. >> have you been involved in any discussions about the case? >> no, sir. >> as they choose a jury -- >> you remember why you answered yes to that question? >> both the prosecution -- >> have you been getting messages on facebook. >> a couple people -- >> and the defense are revealing clues to the strategy. casey anthony long denied she killed her daughter. but one of the lawyers on her defense team while questioning potential jurors suggested if she did, there could be mitigating reasons. >> too lack of maturity, the lack of impulse control, history of sexual abuse. >> caylee anthony's skeletal remains were found in the woods, the five-minute walk from casey's home. but prosecutors believe caylee's lifeless body was first stored in the car her mother was driving. prosecutors said they have sealed canisters with carpet swatches in the trunk. they want to open it in court so that the jury can smell it for themselves. >> may be called upon as well in the course of this case to be asked to smell an odor that is unpleasant. >> this is a case where the forensic evidence, the scientific testimony is going to be everything. if the prosecution has got good experts and the defense has good experts, could be tough for them to sort this out. >> there's the problem of what potential jurors think they already know. because of intense publicity. the judge ordered newspaper boxes out front blacked out. but it may enter the front door. the court administrator revealed the judge's displeasure and fear websites claiming to be his could create confusion. a facebook page that bell vin perry says is not his includes comments suggesting he's made up his mind. one person who used caylee's photo for her i.d. says, aplaud you for the person you are and for seeking justice for caylee anthony. eight jurors selected four men, four women, ages between 30 and 60. the goal, 12 jurors, eight alternates. they're hoping to have this all wrapped up and ready to start on tuesday. lester? >> kerry sanders, thank you, susan philon is a former prosecutor. a high bar to find this jury, isn't it? >> it's a very high bar. this case had more pub lilicity than o.j. simpson did. it's being broadcast and televised like never before. >> a change in venue and the notion being that you want to find people not unduly influenced by the coverage. it doesn't mean people who haven't heard of this, right? >> it's not that you heard it or watched any coverage. it's not that you formed an opinion. it's can you put that aside. just decide the case on the evidence that you hear on the courtroom. and can you be fair. >> how do they speed up this jury selection process? let's face it, there are a lot of people who want do not want on the jury. they'll throw down every exkuls. >> -- excuse. >> that's not the test -- do you want to serve is not the test. there would be people who do or do not want to serve. it's not the test. speeding up isn't necessarily the judge's primary concern. quick justice is not the correct justice. three hours to question an individual juror is too long. the judge said you cannot pretry your case on each juror. in other words, you don't get to try it and see if they like it and if they don't, they're out, if they do, they're in. so speeding it up the point where they're getting it right, streamlining it, honing it, yes. speeding up so they speed through it, no. >> one of the compelling piece of evidence is casey's mother calling the police and saying the car smells like a dead body. we heard there asking potential jurors about your sense of smell. are they going to use smell as evidence in this case. what's the risk. >> they are to the extent they got the judge's decision to have an expert witness testify about that. that's precedent-setting enough. they're going to open a can so the jurors can smell themselves. that's very, very dangerous. i don't think the judge will allow it. that will allow jurors to belate -- jurors can't do that to witnesses. they don't allow the jurors to smell -- what if they don't. you want the expert witness to say, i smell it. >> this could be the glove, the famous o.j. simpson glove. it could backfire. >> doesn't smell like anything to me. >> expert says, i know what death smells like, i smelt it, it smells like that in this case. >> take a break. be back with more after these messages. [ male announcer ] get zyrtec®'s proven allergy relief and love the air®. 50. >> emotional bat toll be reunited with the son, shawn. it's a case that dragged on for years. father and son are together again. we're going to ask david in a moment. but first, their story. in 2004, david's wife took their then 4-year-old shawn on what is supposed to be a two-week vacation to brazil. soon after she told david she had no plan to return. under the rules of an international treaty known as the hague, a treaty brazil signed, shawn should have been returned to david within six weeks. that did not happen. then, a series of stunning events, she got a divorce from david in brazil, remarried, became pregnant, and died hours after giving birth. but the brazilian husband and her husband, shawn's grandparents, continued to fight david in court, until finally, on christmas eve, 2009, shawn was allowed to leave brazil and return home with his father. david goldman writes about his journey in a new book, "a father's love -- one man's unrelenting battle to bring his son home." good morning. it's been a year and a half since shawn arrived home. i'm sure the question you get all the time, but it's what everyone wants to know is how is shawn adjusting. how is he doing? >> regular, happy, 10-year-old, soon to be 11-year-old boy. and every day is a miracle. >> i know that you see a therapist. you both have been through a lot. you write in your book about shawn's, quote, transition from nightmare to normalcy. how much has shawn told you about his time in brazil? >> quite a bit. and the thing is, he was under a lot of pressure and a lot of stress there. and it was really unnecessary, unneeded, and very painful. and our job is to have fun and enjoy the remaining years of his childhood. he really is. >> everyone remembers the pictures of you with shawn when you got him back in custody and you took him to the states. in your book, you write this, he suffered so much, my poor boy, i couldn't protect him. his innocence was gone. more than five years lost, why? my mind momentarily flooded with questions that could not be answered. memories of actions that could not be explained. words that can never be taken back. i didn't dwell there long, we have now, i thought, we have our future. how often do you look back? how often does shawn look back. it's hard to forget the past and who you are now? >> he'll always miss his mom. and the last day when they dragged him through the streets still haunts him. but we do have the now. and as for we can never get back that time we're apart. nothing can ever bring that back. 5 1/2 lost years. but we do have the now. so i try not to dwell too deep and to go back that far or even, you know, we have the now, we have the future. that's our focus. love as father and son. >> you have the now, the future. but you're still fighting a legal battle. a lot of people thought it feels over. you have kulsdcustody, you got bring shawn home. his maternal grandmother is not only challenging you in brazil, but battling you in new jersey for visitation rights. where does that stand? does she see shawn? >> she can. she has the keys to the porthole as the new jersey judge in his opinion stated. however, they don't want to stop the litigation. when we allow shawn to talk to them on the phone, they say we're fighting in the courts. stop fighting in the courts and start being a grandma and ask him how he did in school today and when i come visit we'll have ice cream. stop fighting in the courts, grandma. >> you write in your book that the day you left with shawn from brazil, you said to his grandmother, i will not do to you what you've done to me. do you have any concerns given their zest for trying to not only see him but to take him back to brazil? do you have concerns about letting her see him. >> as long as she's behaving very badly as she's continuing to do, yes, i absolutely have concerns. until she stops all of this fighting in the courts and the litigation in both countries and ongoing and ongoing, absolutely, i have concerns. as anyone would. she's a flag ranlt vrant violat american and international laws for five years and would be if we didn't have this to the highest levels of both governments. >> and it is about shawn. he's here. he's here in the studio. it's great to see you guys together. he's fast approaching his teen years. he's grown up a lot since the last time we've seen you. hi, shawn. what are your hopes as he grows into a young man for shawn. >> that he can grow up to be a happy -- he looks back on his days of being a boy with more fondness than sadnd. sadness. he'll be a productive, compassionate, good young man. >> you can see the love and joy and happiness on shawn's face. thanks for sitting down with us. the book is "a father's love." thank you for being with us. >> thank you, amy. >> we'll be right back. but first, this is "today" on nbc. [ man ] for general electric, here is ronald reagan. ♪ taking a live look outside at the white house. wow, you can really see the fog there. we'll check in with chuck to find out what the rest of today's weather holds. i'm kimberly suiters. in the news for today, one man is dead, another missing after a sailboat capsized on the james river. it happened during a late-night cruise after a party in newport news, virginia. ten people were on that boat when it capsized. eight of them were found clinging to debris in freezing cold water. none of the passengers was wearing a life vest, even though flotation devices were on board. authorities are investigating whether the boat could even safely hold ten people and if that might have contributed to the boat capsizing. maryland authorities have charged a driver for his part in a bus accident that injured 17 people. maryland state police charging 49-year-old carl trends jr. with reckless driving, negligent driving, and other offenses. police say he swerved in front of a bus carrying a kindergarten class from centerville, maryland, on thursday. the bus lost control, hit a utility pole, and crashed on its side. ten kids were hurt in that crash. the bus was carrying kids from wharton elementary school, they were on their way to the national zoo. today you can travel around the world without having leaving d.c. it's the around the world embassy tour as part of passport, d.c. a celebration of international culture in the district. today you can take tours of 35 different embassies. to plan your trip or get a map of the embassies that are participating, go to culturaltourismdc.org. chuck bell has your beautiful saturday forecast -- a good saturday morning, i'm news 4 meteorologist chuck bell. welcome to your weekend, everybody. the sunshine, not much in the way of sunshine coming this way for saturday or for sunday. might get a little break or two from time to time, but really, the clouds are going to win this battle this weekend for certain. temperatures right now are holding in the upper 50s and low 60s thanks to all the clouds out there. a look at live doppler shows a little bit of light rain just south of downtown washington, also down into southern maryland. a few sprinkles headed towards hagerstown as well. maybe even a rumble or two of thunder tomorrow. highs both days hovering around 70 degrees. kimberly, back to you. >> thank you, chuck. a full 90 minutes of local saturday morning, the14th day of may, 2011. it's a cloudy day here in new york. showers are on the way. it's nice right now. big crowd joining us on the plaza. thank you for coming out and saying hi to their friends and family back home. i'm amy robach with lester holt. eating disorders. teenagers, younger women. in the past decade, an increasing number of women in their 30s and 40s and beyond are starving themselves. why that's happening to that particular age group of women. and one sufferer ewill share he emotional story. >> the monkees. a long time since they were a hit show. starting with a fictional band and the band back in the '60s. catching up with three of them. heading on the road with them soon. talking about that coming up. >> milk was just milk. soy, 2%, skim, almond, coconut milk. all of the different choices. which is best for your body type. and are they all healthy, i didn't know that existed. >> they made it through 19 long weeks and finally the final four have made it until we get to the end of the biggest loser. who won the grand prize. alison sweeney is the host of "the biggest loser." she joins us now. >> good morning. >> you're winding down, down to four finalists. one more show, the big finale. >> it's getting close. >> amazing transformation. >> great people. sweet, wonderful, all about families. lovely people and i think they'll blow you away. >> sisters have made it to the final four. how does the family element help? >> good morning, everyone. about an hour outside of pittsburgh, there are some people beautiful missing this morning, because they're right here. how do you say the name of your high school? >> lincoln ear valley. >> all the girls here, and all the guys, they decided to leave and they all went over here. so we'll get to the bottom of -- now they showed up. let's talk about your national forecast. as we go throughout the weekend, severe storms that are out there in south carolina today. we're also going to watch out for some strong storms in indiana and ohio. nothing too bad out there. in the northwest, we'll see wet weather today and tomorrow. so i think northern new england and the pacific northwest, the two of you kind of tied for kind of the weekend. middle of the country looks warm and very nice. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. >> a good saturday morning. outside of our window here in northwest washington, we have clouds aplenty out there this morning. and even a little bit of light rain as well. there's a live picture down at national airport, where the runways and taxiways are already rain soaked early this morning. temperatures are generally in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. we will get a little break in the rainfall. here's a look at live doppler rate now. sprinkles in and around the capital beltway. plenty of dry hours this afternoon, but always a risk for more showers and storms today and tomorrow. time. >> happy 16th to you. if you think anorexia and bulimia are just for teenage girls, think again. an increasing number of women in their 30s and 40s are suffering from eating disorders. here's one woman's story. sharon, real estate agent and mother of three has been struggling with her weight since she was a teenager, but what started as personal discipline soon turned to bulimia. >> then i got the great idea. i said here i am. always having trouble with my weight and trying to deny myself or closet eating, stuffing myself. this was heaven. everything i ate eventually i could throw up. >> by her mid 20s, sharon's bulimia was under control. like so many, she relapsed in her 30s after giving birth to her children once again she found herself throwing up. >> considered secretive. it's not that they didn't exist. it's just that people felt so uncomfortable to be older and struggling with a eating disorder. >> experts say an increasing number of women over 30 are overexercising, abusing laxatives, and starving themselves to dangerous extremes. five shows here and four of us -- with the rise of shows like "real housewives" and flawless-looking celebrities, it's harder for women to accept their bodies as they are. >> they're great. you see an ad and see people with weight on them compared to someone extremely slim, it's more appealing. >> we near a society of more plastic surgery, dieting. so the pressure to look a certain way can really traumatize somebody. >> andrea is a social worker who treats patients struggling with eating disorders at the renfrew center in new york. >> women who have been vulnerable and who have had a milder form of eating disorder, you get older and the accumulation of all of the factors can be a lethal combination. >> for sharon, telling her family was the hardest part. but it was the first step in ending her lifelong battle with bulimia. >> couldn't live that life anymore. i started to seek help. fortunately, it was out there. >> gail is a psychiatrist and our diet and nutrition editor is here. good morning. >> good morning. >> let's start with you. we're hearing this term, mid life eating disorder, but how do you know when you have a problem. you should be concerned. >> these are extreme behaviors, these aren't people who want to lose pounds. food aversion, restrictions, extreme weight loss, on the other end, overeating, guilt, shame, purging by vomiting or laxative abuse or overexercising. the big sign is going online looking for social support in the pro anorexia and bulimia sites saying this is a good thing. the guilt and shame is something that women know about. >> what's interesting is we said this is something we attribute to young girls. is it because in your 30s and 40s, we can all speak from experience, your body is going through a lot of changes. your metabolism slows down, gravity takes hold. are we seeing a recurrence? >> biology and behavior. not just in the 30s and 40s but the 50s as well. the metabolism slows down and you have to eat less to maintain your weight. there's life changes. empty nesters, aging parents, young children. a lot of things are happening. it's really not about food, it's about coping with stress, managing better. having the skills to be able to do this. there's two kinds of people. the kind we saw on the piece, these are the ones that relapse. the eating disorder, or stress and other factors can precipitate another episode or newly diagnosed women in mid life which is a growing concern. because these are people more concerned with image and they find it hard to lose weight. there's two different groups. >> a huge mental component here. the stress of dealing with all of the pressures on the outside world. and the need to be thin again. you start to lose the body you once had. >> in fact, actually, the issues of need to be a perfectionist, people who have difficulty with impulse control, people who are struggling with depression and/or affecty. tho -- anxiety, those are the people who are ripe for developing a eating disorder. >> you're in the gray area. you can see yourself going there. >> you have to own up to the fact that you are going there. people are in denial about this usually until they really crossed over the line. but if you can say to yourself, i think i might have a problem, what you have to do is first of all, tell people around you. it's the secretiveness that often keeps it going for a long time. you need to break rituals. so people tend to eat in secret or they have ritualistic behavior after the meal i do x, y, z. or i'll do the certain foods. you have to break the rituals and not go to on-line sites and stop weighing yourself and looking in a mirror because that is what perpetuates it. you can do those things on the own to. be honest, when you cross into an eating disorder area, you need help. this is a difficult thing to manage on your own. the professional will help you treat the underlying issues like anxiety and depression. maybe be able to medicate you for some things that cause purging and that kind of thing, but help you frankly to gain the weight back. one thing to talk about mid life eating disorders is you look for signs -- you've lost your period for a number of months in a row. mid life women are doing that because they're perimen pausopa >> you don't have to look very much if you're a binger and purger to. the outside world, there's nothing happening. but you have a built-in shame. >> other people will notice. other people -- if you see your girl friend or your mother or your family member, you need to be the one to say -- >> up. >> you need help. >> thank you so both so much. an important topic. much different note, a much lighter note, one of america's first boy bands are back. we'll catch up with the monkees after this. stay well. where liz kiem can find answers to nagging questions like, "is this a cold or allergies?" and, "when should i switch out my toothbrush?" where she can get calcium for her bones and protection for her skin. at walgreens, you can find the answers to live a little healthier too. walgreens. there's a way to stay well. like walgreens on facebook and find out how to receive a coupon for $5 off nature made calcium. like walgreens on facebook and find out like many chefs today, i feel the best approach to food is to keep it whole for better nutrition. and that's what they do with great grains cereal. see the seam on the wheat grain?
