>> in a lot of ways it was. i d peoplepproach me about doing a movie for a number of years and i felt like they always wanted to tl a crime story and to me, it was -- it's not a crime story, it's a faly story. and that's what i felt like was thright way to tell to the story. and to be a tribute to m parent i wouldn't be somewhe i am, i wouldn't be the person i am. sister wouldn't be who she is had our parents not been the way they were and brought us up with those kinds of ideas and that's how we ha survivednd that was really the message. and ultimately, what i didn't expect is that it would include forgiveness. and sohat was the story that i felt like needed tbe told and i had a chance to do it and deded to go ahead. >> but you also played your dad in the film. >> yeah. it was an honor and i didt -- when i fst -- we started talking about me playing my dad, i remember him alive, vivacious, driving in the car, throwing the football and those kindsf things and not dying on the floor. so even though wrote the screen play, it dn't dawn on me for a couple of weeks, that i got to relivthat scene. >> when you did relive that scene, i had to be a very difficult mont for you. >> it s the hardest thing i have ever done. those things in life that we drd are never quite as bad as we think they're going to be. and thatas the one thing that i hav done that was much worse. it was much harder than i thought. en you do those things,hen you're in the process of doing them, there's -- you know, really reliving it, it takes it out of you and -- but i think ultimately wn we come to the end of it, it's been really positive expernce and i think it's a movie that is very -- very uplifting to people in that i think we'll show them how good we cane. >> despite what happened to you. you mentioned tha this is a movie about forgiveness. one of the men -- or the man really who shot you parent, glen ache is in prison for life. >> yes. >> when you were a ste senator, you had the opportunity to visit him and that was mething youanted to do? >> i wanted to do it. i didn't plan it. i happened to o a tourf the prison and wound up kind of pushing my way into being able to have this visit. d it wouldn't have ever happened if had not been a senator. but it was theost dramatic thing aside fromhe shootings themselves that's ever happened. d i had the chance in the movie, it's much shorter, but obously the movie was about an hour and a half long. and -- >> what did you talk about? >> covered aot of ound. i mean it's -- you know, he ologized. i rember saying for 15 years i have wanted nothing more than to see you dead and frankly i think that's why i was there was without even realizing it, a l of the things have done in my life i think were preparing myself whout even realizing it for that meeting. and it did not go at all the way that i expected it to. i wound up, and i think largely the lessons from my parents and fah were -- the was one way to handl that and i went in planning the opposite, i think. and i und up forgivingim. >> you wound up telling himi forgive you? >> yes. yes. and it changed my li. >> how so? >> well, i didn't reali how ch we carry inside. for me, being in the sena, i have always ought, i'm fun, likable, i'm not an angry person, don't think, and it wasn't until i got in that meetg that i realizedow angry i h been and how much i caied all that around with me and that's what -- and how it was desoying my own life. even tugh on t outside, everything went great, you know, bend the scenes, nothing was rit. and that's what we do, i think in the movie, that's toe aot of the story i how those things tear your le apart. and you think that you're doing well. or maybehe world thinks you're doing well but you know yore not. and so it's not until we deal with those things that wean rely begin to mov on. >>yeah, it's been 31 years for you and your sister. and i kw you have had a struggle along the way, to get where you are now and you're happily married, y have two children, your sister's doing great in oklaha as well. but is there ever a day that goes by that you don't flash back? >> it really is willie, we haven't seen a drop in unemployment in a while. we wer at 9.8%, we dropped to 9.4%. we also saw a drop in the long-ter jobless rate, we saw a drop in at as well. we didn't see a rea increase in hiring. wenly added about 100,000 jobs and we need to add a whole lot more jobs than that to start digging in this hole of 8 million americans who lost a job in the financial crisis. >> a lot of people have called it a jobless recovery. does this number donything t change at? is there renewedptimism for 2011? >> ion't know if ts number changes that, but there is optimism, a recent survey of some of the biggest companies in the country, about hf o them say they plan to hire significtly over the last six months. six months o, only a third of them we saying that. a lot of people are saying wre going get a bigonth where half a million jobs were created. obviously it didn't happen today. but 9.4%, psychologically that's really important. >> i does take a while to find a job. what can we expect as far as time it takes to land job in this economy? >> we're looking at this month about 34 weeks, that is long time back in the last cession back in 2001, the peak time it took someone to find a job w lost one was0 weeks, that is bad, we haven't seen levels like this in 60 years. at's the big iue and the big hole that we need to climb out of, and if that's really the bad news, it's in tms of these numbers. >> iyou are looking for a job in this economy, as so many peop are, where do we begin? >> we kw that people are hiring in technology, they're hiring i education and they're hiring in health care. and you may say, well, i'm not a nurse, i'm not a physical thera therist, i don't hava degree in computers. you need to look at the skills that you do have anday can i apply them inhese industries that actually do have bs. >> the bes places to work for 2011. let's ke a look at the list. >> nurse is the ver top of the list. as i have been sayg for ars, if you want a job, go be a nurse. people are living longer, it's because we're suffering from more chronic disees. the other jobs on the list, at of professional jobs as wl as again, those technology jobs. >> and o of the keys to allf ese, jean, is as you know a college degree. the unemploymentate goes down considerably if youave that college degree. >> it's about half if you have that college degree the most important thing is that u have real skills thatan be appliein this job market. there are a lot of people out there that are thking, boy, it's a lot of money to go back to college right now, if i haven't done that,ow can i get the skills that i need? >> it totally depends. this is like perfect food for this kind of weather. it's nice and warm, it's snowing outside in new york. nice, yummy food. >> andf you're having ople over. >> as you can see, this is big pan, it can fit lots of food. so you justaute that a little bit. en we're going to add some shrimp. you can add any size shrp you want. i usually go for medium. we're going to breadt with a little bit of flour. because we're not making the sauce on theside, the our is going to help thien our sauce. that tail is going to give you so flavor and it's goingo make for a better psentation. so you just spread it wh a little bit of flour. and then what we're goingo do, same pan, thi kind of smooths everything out to the side. smells good, righ we have got that wonderful corn, that pablano. can you smell the spice? and then you just add the shrimp in there. youon't want to overcrown, because then they'll steam a not cook. you want them to bro a little bit. no overcrowding in the pan. add that shrimnd let it coo a little bit. then we're going to degle. we have got the finished prodt. we can flip it, e, it's got a ttle bit of color. >> careful, meredith. >> she's a pro. i heard she's a pro. right? >> exactly. >> she know what is she's doin add a little bit of wine that's going todd a lite bit more vetable juice to add to your sauce. we have that beautiful pablano casserole. bring the casrole, because we have got desrt. >> this is for desnesert. you just mix that together with your dry ingredients, a little flour, baking soda and salt to bring outhe flavors. a little bit of vanilla, a little bit of egg. put this together this isexican chocolate. an if you can't find mexican chocolate, use regular bittereet chocolate and add a little bit of granulated sugar. it's the same flavor, se texture. add it in there, som dates. mix it in. you want to chop up those dates. a little bi of that mandarin peel. just kind of mix i up. >> let me help with that. this is the part i can do. just heavy manual labor. that requires no sll whatsoever. all right, that's looking better, sfligt. >> i like it when it looks nice and lumpy. you did a good job. and then you tak this -- there's a trick, dip it in e oil. the you go. and then just scoop a little bit. >> okay. >> okay. and then throw in there. >> drop it in?
