shaken to its core, "today," tuesday, may 4th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to "today" on this tuesday morning. i'm meredith vieira. >> i'm matt lauer. this morning, a suspect, 30-year-old faisal shahzad of bridgeport, connecticut is now behind bars. less than three days after he allegedly tried to blow up an suv. of course that was the heart of times square. >> here's what we know. shahzad is a naturalized u.s. citizen board in pakistan. he attempted to board an emirates flight to dubai. >> investigators say shahzad recently returned to the united states from a trip from pakistan and bought the suv used in the failed bombing for $1,300 cash a few weeks ago. while the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not talked about a possible motive. >> we'll get the latest on this from nbc's justice correspondent pete williams who has been monitoring this story overnight. pete, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. fbi agents and new york police made the arrest just before midnight as the suspect faisal shahzad was at the airport preparing to plea from the u.s. on a flight overseas. he'd been the focus of an intensive investigation that moved remarkably quickly. at 11:45 monday night, police and fbi agents made the arrest at new york's kennedy airport accusing faisal shahzad, a 30-year-old american citizen board in pakistan, of being the man behind the car bomb plot in times square. a u.s. officials says he was detained by customs and border protection agents as he tried to leave the country on an emirates airlines flight to dubai. overnight, the attorney general formally announced the arrest which was made just two days after the bombing attempt. >> this investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence and we continue to pursue a number of leads. but it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill americans. >> reporter: the key evidence officials say was the 1993 nissan pathfinder that was driven into times square at 6:30 saturday night. investigators found its vehicle identification number on sunday which led to the registered owner in bridgeport, connecticut, who sold it through ads on the internet and the craigslist website offered it for $1,300. the seller could not remember the buyer's name, officials say, and the transaction was done in cash. because the sale was set up by e-mail, the fbi was able to get those records and find the buyer's name, faisal shahzad. early this morning, police and federal agents certainlied his home in connecticut and another address where he was thought to have lived. shahzad was born in pakistan where he has family and officials say he had just spent several months there. investigators say it is too soon to know whether there is an organized terror group behind the attempted bombing but attorney general eric holder pointedly suggested there might be such a connection. >> as we move forward, we will focus on not just holding those responsible for it accountable, but also on obtaining any intelligence about terrorist organizations overseas. >> reporter: investigators say they have yet to determine whether shahzad had any help in the u.s. with the bomb plot. they say they have not ruled it out and that others are under investigation. when the nissan suv drove into times square saturday night and carried the makings of a bomb, this picture taken from a nearby theater shows two red canisters of gasoline on the back seat. between them, police say, was a container of firecrackers apparently meant to ignite the gasoline. the resulting fire was supposedly intended to set off three propane tanks in the cargo area found with their valves closed. shahzad is expected to appear in federal court in manhattan later today to formally face charges. but federal officials say this bomb investigation has a long way to go to see if others were involved, either here or overseas. matt? >> pete williams on this story for us this morning, thank you very much. nbc's peter alexander is in bridgeport, connecticut where overnight, as we just heard, authorities searched the susp t suspect's home. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that search is actually continuing as we speak at this hour. early this morning there was a raid that took place here. the fbi, as well as local police got their first opportunities to go into this home. members of the joint terrorism task force and local police here in connecticut, as well as the fbi agents had been staking out this neighborhood since late yesterday evening. there was also a connecticut bomb squad on site. we'll let the camera push down this block to give you a better sense of where that two-story home is where 30-year-old faisal shahzad was believed to have been living. investigators today were seen carrying out black bags of evidence. they were actually executing a court-authorized search warrant. the neighbors with whom we've spoken today describe this obviously as a scary situation. that's the word they all seem to use, given the fact that this man who was believed to have lived here is now accused of plotting what would have been a bombing in times scare. however, a neighbor who lives just across the street said she believes the home was abandoned, she had never seen the man. faisal shahzad also has a second home, according to authorities, they believe, a home where he may have lived in the past that was in an area about 20 minutes from here known as shelton. pakistandy poli di police say ss arrested in karachi, he'd traveled from the u.s. to pakistan in july of 2009. we are learning about that flight itself. the united emirates flight was flight 202, scheduled to leave last night. that's the only flight on the uae website between jfk and dubai, scheduled to leave last night. instead it left this morning at roughly 6:00. the airline itself says that they went through a full security procedure as a result of what happened, deplaning all of the passengers on-board, rechecking all of the baggage before allowing the plane to leave again this morning. investigators believe there may be some international ties between this man. that's why they are checking phone records and other details today. the most important note today, here at the home in bridgeport, that search is still under way. >> peter alexander in bridgeport, thank you. here's meredith. michael sheehan is the former deputy commissioner of counterterrorism for the new york city police department, now a terrorism analyst for nbc news. michael, good morning to you. the fact that investigators have an intact vehicle to work with with a bomb inside, this thing had not detonated, do you think that's why they were able to track down this suspect to quickly? >> absolutely. i think they'd have gotten the vehicle identification number even if it exploded, forensics are so advanced but this enabled it to go much quicker. they got this e-mail that led to him and grabbed him at the airport. >> what kind of pressure are they likely to put on this suspect during interrogation to find out if he was working with other people? >> in the united states we do things a little differently by the nypd and fbi interrogators working with this guy since last night are very professional. they'll get to the bottom of this through their techniques. >> it doesn't look like this is very well carried out. the vin number was scratched out in just one place. propane tanks on the valves had not been opened up. other things suggested maybe this was very amateurish. >> now we know this guy was in pakistan for five months. question is had he been to training camps by al qaeda or pakistan taliban. if he was, he wasn't paying attention in class. this is a very amateurish operation. but again, possible links to those organizations, very troubling scenario. >> the taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks. how serious are authorities here likely to take that. >> before there was any evidence he was linked to pakistan we didn't take it seriously at all. now that we know he was there and heading back, that has to be taken seriously. >> yesterday you were of the opinion this was probably a lone wolf. do you still feel that way today? >> i think this is in between. this is clearly not a well trained operative, didn't have technical skills of a well-trained al qaeda operative. looks like he does have links to the organization but just hadn't developed the skills to be successful enough but the trend is very troubling. >> talking to people is under the day after this happened, a lot of people thought why hasn't this happened sooner. the last time we had a car bomb was oklahoma city in 1995. is that because of the vigilance of the police here or is it just pure luck? >> i think it is a combination of both. a little bit of luck and a little bit of hard work. it is like in sports if you mix hard work and luck you normally win. we've been fortunate over the last eight years. very tough investigations both overseas and the united states rolling up these cells. fortunately the terrorists just haven't been very good as we saw saturday night. this guy just didn't have the skill set but we have to keep very vigilant. this guy reminds us that within our midst here in the united states there are people that intend to kill us. >> there's such a police presence in sometimes square on an every day basis. what's it say to you that someone was able to drive a car in there right under their noses? >> that will always be the case. we're not going to shut down this city because of people like this. the city is open. there are many ways if here. we don't want to shut it down. the key has got to be investigating these potential cells, these linkages to other organizations and rolling up these people before they create a truck bomb that ig nights. but if they haven't and it works, going to be very difficult to stop. >> thank you very much, michael sheehan. 7:10. crews working to contain that massive oil spill in the gulf of mexico are getting some much needed help from mother nature. it's a delicate race against time to protect the u.s. coastline. nbc's lester holt is in venice, louisiana with the latest. lester, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. that rough weather over the weekend may have been a mixed blessing. while it certainly hindered containment operations, it worked to break up the sea. the little today is described as less after giant glob and more like a mosaic of oil. there's been a stall if the ocean currents, winds are a little lighter today and blowing away from the shore, and that seems to be stalling the movement of the slick. with winds today expected to turn offshore, the oil slick is predicted to remain at sea giving the louisiana coast a reprieve, for now. >> every day that it's still out in the water is an opportunity for wave energy to break it up. >> reporter: and break up is what it seems to be doing. the latest map from noaa shows the massive oil slick at first glance appears to have shrunk. experts say appearances can be deceiving with the leak still uncapped, the volume of oil in the sea is growing by the hour. >> if it comes to shore, it's not going to come in as one big blob. it is going to come in as like patches of streamers. >> reporter: officials also say chemical dispersant agents being used under water are preventing some of the oil from reaching the surface. specially built domes designed to cap the leaks and allow the oil to be safely pumped out won't be in place until the weekend, at the earliest. officials hope that changing winds can buy them more time. >> we have yet to have confirmed reports. oil ashore but we remain ready to respond to those as they come in. >> reporter: those who fish these floodwaters know that their livelihoods are at the mercy of the wind and whichever direction it pushes that oil slick. they say they go about their business with a new sense of urgency. this oyster marn an and his cree hauling oysters in as fast as they can. on the other side of the mississippi river, the government has temporarily banned fishing because of the spill, fearful these oyster beds could be next. >> if it gets in here, that could be the end of it as we know it. >> reporter: others are hedging their bets. >> we want to work. >> reporter: signing up to work for bp to help in the cleanup using the boats they normally fish from. >> go get your boat, we got a job for you. as long as they need it, we're there. >> reporter: when this is all over, the coast will still be their home. that break from the weather won't last forever. in fact, forecasters think that the winds may turn back onshore and even stronger later this week. so louisiana is certainly not out of the woods. we should note, matt, even in mississippi right now, they are already putting up booms in anticipation of the oil slick going in that direction. >> lester holt in louisiana for us this morning, thank you very much. now let's get a check of rest of the morning's top stories. ann curry is at news desk. good morning, everybody. also in the news this morning, those weekend storms across parts of the south are now being blamed for at least 29 deaths, most of them in tennessee. there is concern that total will still go higher. nbc's ron mott joins us now from nashville, tennessee with more on this. ron, good morning. >> reporter: ann, good morning to you. as you can see behind me, parts of downtown nashville are still under water. a lot of folks caught by surprise by this weekend's downpours that simply wouldn't stop. with the cumberland river still rising late monday, it was moving day in downtown nashville for an architectural firm trying to keep its offices dry while the basement sits full of water. >> we're taking out everything we need to be able to operate in a new location. so we're leaving our furniture here, we've moved everything up off of the floor. >> reporter: the mad rush follows the record downpour that soaked parts of tennessee over the weekend. in music city where an unprecedented 13-plus inches fell, the titans football field was under water which also submerged the lobby of the opry land hotel forcing 1,500 guests to spend the night in a high school. the famed grand old opry house and the country music hall of fame were also taking on water. elsewhere in hundreds of rescues, strangers became friends. >> they were in the water, no one was helping them. i just grabbed the little girl. >> thank you so much. thank you. >> reporter: the cumberland crested monday night more than 12 feet above flood stage. to minimize damage, floodgates were opened. >> i know mother nature can be cruel. certainly she's dealt us a really bad hand this past weekend. >> just really sad. my heart just goes out to everybody who's lost so much. >> reporter: all nashville public schools are closed today. parents are urged to tell their children to not play in this water because a water treatment plant was also under water. there is a pretty good chance this water is contaminated. >> ron mott this morning, thanks. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton says iran will do whatever it can to divert attention away from >> well, certainly when we arrived on the scene, we're in a far better position to look at yeardley's body. i have no idea what the circumstances were where the roommate discovered the body or what she observed at the time of that discovery but it was clear to us when we arrived on the scene, medics were already present, the body was turned over and there were very obvious and apparent injuries to her body which led the primary units that responded to believe that in fact we had a crime scene to secure. they immediately notified investigators andby began that investigation. >> chief, where did you find the body exactly and what were the extent of the injuries? what can you tell us? >> the body was discovered in her bedroom. i don't want to go into a tremendous amount of detail about the injuries. part of the reason for that is certainly there's autopsy scheduled this morning. we'll learn more about the manner and cause of her death and really what the extent of the injuries are. but i can tell you that the injuries were obvious to the officer and by sight were very severe. >> do you believe there was a weapon used, chief? was it something that he said? something that you found? >> a combination of factors. i'm certainly not going to disclose the facts and circumstances which gave rise to probable cause. i will say that there were discussions throughout the investigation from the very earliest point with our commonwealth attorney who is the prosecuting authority here in the commonwealth, as well as a magistrate before that charging document was actually presented to us. there were -- these decisions weren't made unilaterally, they were made with consultation with our commonwealth attorney and those results were presented to magistrate but i'm not comfortable talking about the specifics. >> last night you talked with yeardley love's mother. i'm sure it cannot be easy. what do you say?
