Sitdown with Little Big Town the country band whose fourpart harmonies have made them one of the most popular acts in all of music. Over nearly two decades together navigating some big success and devastating lows. I was so numb, i couldnt even make a step on my own. And i would have breakdowns. And they would cover for me and take me out. Or lay with me on the bed and cry. And just encouraged me that it was going to get better. Our sunday sitdown with Little Big Town, plus harry smith a bit later in the show. But lets begin this morning with those deadly tornadoes in east texas nbcs Charles Hadlock is live on the scene in canton, texas with the latest. Charles, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. People in east texas were expecting bad weather yesterday, but nothing like this. This is where one of four tornadoes touched down yesterday. Destroying homes and businesses, including an entire car texas. Five people are dead. More than 100 others injured. And the search continues today for more victims. This morning, First Responders assessing the damage after a series of powerful tornadoes tore through east texas last night. Sucked the house right off on top of us. The roof, glass on us. Reporter leaving a path of destruction. I dont really remember much except just watching the walls of the house fall off. And everything around me being gone. Reporter cars were spun offer the highway. This dodge dealership completely destroyed. Were hoping for the best. But really expecting the worst. Reporter firefighters raced from house to house to search for victims. Every last one, but we have nothing left. It was really dark. Everything was flying around at the house. Reporter the twisters part of a massive storm system across this weekend. In missouri, a state of emergency, at least one person dead, dozens of others picking up the pieces. This is all we have left. We built the news 2011. Got a freak out there who is just a peaceful battling brook. I came over here and water receded quite a bit. I was able to wade through it and get my animals and take them back to the car and take them to my dads house. Reporter First Responders shocked at what theyre seeing. Ive been here 37 years and this is the first ive seen the water this high. Reporter with the sun coming up, the cleanup begins, as this entire storm system moves east. Willie. Just astounding pictures there. Charles hadlock in canton, texas. Charles, thank you. As we mentioned tens of millions of people across the country could see more Severe Weather today. Well get dylans fast and all of that in just a meanwhile, this is President Trumps 101 day in presidency. He commended the day in pennsylvania reminiscent of ones as a candidate. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. The president made himself an antiwashington outsider, telling the pennsylvania crowd he would rather spend time with them over a washington tradition. President trump became the first indecades not to attend the White House Correspondent dinner, even Ronald Reagan recovering from a gunshot walled into the event. Mr. Trump told that rally crowd all kinds of things about renegotiating nafta, repealing obamacare, but spent the most of his time mocking the media. Reading thousands of fired up supporters in harrisburg, pennsylvania saturday night, President Trump reveled in running another kind of campaign. An attack on the national media. They are gathered together for the White House Correspondents dinner without the president. Reporter but in decades of president ial tradition, dishing out his own 100day report card. I think we would all agree the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade. Reporter back in washington, the black tie event went on to celebrate the first amendment. And to refute accusations made by the president. We are not fake news. And we are not the enemy of the american people. [ applause ] reporter but the dinner is best known for being funny. The show went on. This year featuring comedy centralminaj. I would say its an honor to be here. But would be an alternate fact. It is not. No one wanted to do this. Or president is on stage when jokes are made at his expense. Who is tweeting at 3 00 a. M. Sober . Reporter zinging the president , minaj said was his free speech. Leader of our country is not here. Thats because he lives in moscow. It is a very long flight. It would be hard for vlad to make it. He cant make it on a saturday. Its a saturday. Reporter skipping the dinner to white house officials as well, and yet President Trump told that rally crowd he might attend the dinner next year. Of course, it was his 100th day. Until in washington, the peoples climate march brought thousands of demonstrators out. They marched from the capitol, right to the white house. House to outside of the gates. They were protesting the president s policies. And at the same time, noting that the epa removed from its government website Climate Change dat and other scientific information citing that the agency is moving in another direction. It was quite a day ad willie. It was. Kelly odonnell at the white house. Thanks so much. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning, my friend. Good morning, willie. Lets talk about last night. You have these two competing events where its traditionally a night of detente where the president shows up, makes his own jokes. Donald trump went obviously another direction. The press defended his role. And what was his objective last night and did he achieve it . I think his objective was to fire up his base a little bit. And i think the split screen is i dont think there was a politician in america wouldnt have wanted that split screen, willie, if youre seen in the heartland of americans talking to constituents up against press in black tie in a washington ball room. Look, a politician in that split screen is going to win that short term every time. But, look, long term, i dont know if t media is healthy for him. I think whats interesting, willie, if you think about it, up until last night, he actually toned down the media bashing over the last month. And i wonder if just last night was just about the dinner. And whether hell continue on that toning down as the year wears on. There was some irony she was attacking many of the people to whom he gave interviews this week and last couple of weeks. It was an extraordinary moment in his speech where he singled out two congressmen in pennsylvania at the speeches, we better get health care done or im going to be very incorporate gra angry. Hes now had a couple bites at it. The Freedom Caucus republicans believe theyll get something. Where is the white house looking for its first legislative victory . I think thats the biggest story of the first 100 days is the fact that theyre not on track for a major legislative victory anywhere. Look, could he passed out of the house on health care . Maybe. But even if it passes out of the house, its going nowhere as it sands on a repeal and replace bill in the senate. Tax reform looks like theyre not really even at the starting blocks. Theyve got that onesheeter out. But they havent begun the process in congress. The reason i say its a biggest story the first 100 days, willie, in many respects if you look at the past five president s in the modern era, they either had a legislative achievement by the 100day mark or they truly were on track within another month or two just after. And its not there. Look, the first 100 days politically is usually your best as far as Political Capital is concerned. And approval rating. Things are only going to go downhill on that front from here. In that interview that i mentioned with reuters this week, donald trump said he thought it would be easier, to reflect, i thought the job would have been easier than it is. What do you think hes led, chuck, in 100 days that might signal he might do something differently to get those victories in the next 100 days . I think he realizes you cant take a sledgehammer to everything. I mean, he is starting to learn that washington moves the a different pace than he does. And it never will move at the pace that he likes. So, ive actually seen some patience. Look, its still not a lot. And i still think that, many in ways, washington is educating President Trump more than President Trump is educating washington. And over time, thats not a good place for the president to be. But i do think that he is starting to understand, at least, hey, washington is a very processoriented town and you better understand how that process works. Chuck todd, a lot to talk about on meet the press this morning. We will be watching the exclusive interview with Vice President mike pence. Also this morning, a u. S. Reporter blane county, montana, is one of those places you almost cant get there from here. They have that big sky thing down pat. And as for politics, its a mixed bag. Josephs chapel is a sweet, small space that holds hundreds of memory. Made my first communion here. Some good memories. That is where i first loved my favorite thing to do now. Reporter this neat yet mighty chapel sits across the street from the Freedom Tower and ground zero. Few of us will forget where we were when the unthinkable happened on september 11th, 2001. St. Josephs stood directly in the shadow of the destruction. It emerged from the ashes as an humble and unexpected resident. What church hold to the community . It became really a focal point for the hope for the future. Reporter father madigan was its pastor in the aftermath of 9 11 when it became a command center for rescue workers. The city took over and used it as a place to take care of recovery workers. After a very grueling experience working the pit there, they needed the break. That basically fed the body but fed the spirit, the soul. Cant imagine what those people went through. Im extremely proud of that fact, as well. Thats what our church can do to lend a hand to that process. Reporter amy mccarthy kurta have been coming to the church since 1999 and livered ed live apartments above. I looked out the sight. Reporter the area was evacuated for months when the parishioners came back, they immediately got to work rebuilding the damaged interior was devastated, as it was coming back to live it showed that the community outside the chapel came to life. Reporter st. Josephs came back as more than a church. It was rededicated in 2005 as a memorial. Its walls are lined with patron saints symbolic of firefighters, police officers, rescue workers. To have that feeling. Sustained through them. And also we werent giving up. The message of 9 11 that we all embraced was, never forget, you wont be defeated. Reporter and yet while 9 11 couldnt defeat the church, rising rent in the increasingly posh neighborhood might. In 2014, the chapels annual rent spiked from 85,000 to 263,000. The archdiocese says thats unsustainable. The parish is sinking further and further into debt. Its just not a situation that can continue indefinitely. Reporter the Families Community dont want to see it go. How would you feel if st. Josephs had to close . I would feel disappointed because its such an amazing place. And so many people feel the same way. Ic thatting away this church takes away a nerve, i believe, to the city of what happened in events of 9 11. Its a pure and simple and quiet space that is a part of living history. And i dont know how you can take that away and not feel the loss. Now, the churches down there, dylan, like this one were so critical in those days after 9 11. People forget they were housing for the First Responders. They provided food and clothing and everything else. Theyve become historical sites. The parishioners are praying for a miracle. Whether a large donation. Im a member of the parish, so, i know how much it means to t community, and it would be really sad to see it go. Lets hope they get the help they need. Dit dylan, great story.
