Health care bill. What did the president know about it beforehand . And later my sunday sitdown with Tracee Ellis Ross, golden winning star of the tv show blackish, daughter of diana ross and just a wildly entertaining lunch date. 44 years since your mother won a golden globe herself . I didnt know that until the next day. Social media. I saw it on the gram. I saw it on the gram. Somebody put it on the gram. Our sunday sitdown with Tracee Ellis Ross a little bit later in the show. But lets begin this morning with that deadly mass shooting at a cincinnati nightclub. Richard chiles of our affiliate is on the scene for us this morning. Richard, good morning. Bring us up to speed. Reporter willie, good morning. The investigation is now under way as shots were fired outside club Cameo Nightclub just after 1 00 this morning. Witnesses say there was a call for security, then 10 minutes at least 20 shots fired, striking 16, leaving one person dead. Four Cincinnati Police officers were outside at the time of the shooting working offduty detail. Those officers rushed inside the nightclub, were able to administer cpr but unable to save a life. Veteran officers of this department say this was the most chaotic scene theyve worked in their careers. Shots were fired, individuals ran outside, so theres not a lot of people inside the club. Saturday night it is a very young crowd. We have had incidents here in the past, but this is the worst by far. Reporter they believe they were security cameras working inside at the time of the shooting. That camera footage will certainly be critical as officers continue their investigation trying to narrow in on the person or persons involved in this shooting. Willie . Richard chiles of our cincinnati well stay on top of it. Lets move to to politics where the president is moving on to tax reform after the Health Care Bill went down in flames. After he publicly complimented paul ryan after the loss, he wants the public to know the failure is not on him. The tweet that has washington talking this morning. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. Typically the president needs no help if he wants to criticize another leader or fellow republican. Hes not shy about that. And it is also the case that when he talks on twitter about a tv show, hes often on it. I asked the press secretary why the president was tweeting about a particular show. He said he likes the show. And what followed makes that all the more interesting. Just another tweet from the president , one that could have been easily overlooked. At real donald trump posted about a before it aired, saying, watch judge janine before it airs. Did he know she would drop this bomb . Paul ryan needs to step down as speaker of the house. Reporter the host dished out the blame for fridays bung he would bungled obamacare appeal on ryan. He failed to deliver the votes on his Health Care Bill. She said she did not know in advance she would criticize ryan. He and i had absolutely no conversation, no discussion, no nothing. Reporter friday mr. Trump clearly said he is confident in the speakers leadership. I like speaker ryan. He worked very, very hard. Reporter the president and speaker were partners selling the repeal bill. But a group of House Republicans refused to buy, leading to a startling defeat so early in a presidency. When ryan stood before cameras i told him the best thing i think t decision. Reporter ryan defended President Trump. The president gave his all in this effort. Reporter yet the tv host trump tweeted about and speaker ryan, you come in with all your swagger and experience reporter through ryan often seen as a star among conservatives under the bus. This is not on President Trump. Reporter case closed for judge piro. But the president cannot pass any part of his agenda without congress. There were things about this bill i didnt particularly like. Reporter the Trump Administration is already replacing the health care appeal with its next goal of tax reform. Mike pence made the president s new pitch saturday in west virginia. Were going to roll our sleeves up and were going to cut taxes across the board. Reporter and so far no reaction from speaker paul ryans office, and interestingly, at the time that program and some of his family were having dinner at a restaurant at his hotel here in d. C. Now, all of the fallout from the Health Care Law and the bust on repeal has brought out a lot of people around the country. There were boisterous town halls, and on saturday there were making America Great marches across the country. The president tweeted about that, too, saying he thought there was a lot of support. There were lots of Trump Supporters who came out, but there were also instances, especially in california, where there were scuffles and violence and a handful of arrests. The emotions are high, the divisions are great and the fallout from all of this this week is something that is still creating a lot of activism among constituents out there who have feelings strongly on both sides of the issue. Willie . What a week in the building behind you. Kelly odonnell at the white house. Kelly, thanks so much. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Good morning, willie. Lets start with the t either the white house is offering friendly programming notes for saturday night news, or he is endorsing the view that speaker ryan should step aside. Look, its a not so subtle attempt to deflect, right . Who takes the fall for the biggest, what one conservative writer called the biggest broken promise in american political history. And is i think thats the question here. Who owns this defeat . Is it President Trump, is it speaker ryan . Look, they can point fingers all they want. The entire Republican Party is going to own this. For seven years four election cycles they have made this promise as essentially the number one promise. And it was always, well, we need the senate. Okay, we need the presidency. Well, they have it all and now theyre walking away after 17 days. Thats the surprising thing to me, and i dont know if the base is going to forgive either speaker ryan or President Trump for simply walking away from this. It was supposed you had both the congress and the white house and this was the dream to get rid of obamacare, and yet on friday they couldnt come up with the votes to do it. What do you think President Trump learned from this . I hesitate to say he was humbled by it, but did he learn something about being president , that its not like being ceo, that not just by sheer personality can you get a vote . Well find out what hes learned. If he doesnt learn anything from this, then what was a major setback turns into a debilitating one. But if you take him at his words and sort of read between some of the lines on friday, notice he didnt he went out of his way not to trash anybody publicly, though he may have done it through his tv recommendations, and then he started talking about the democrats. While he was trying to blame them, he also said maybe theyll come to the table. I think thats his way of admitting and hell never say it this way but it is his way of admitting he cant do anything big in this town if he doesnt find a way to work with de away from this, then it gives him a chance to try to get things done down the road. There was no attempt in this case to work with democrats. The assumption was they would get all the republicans and they would be fine to get through this Health Care Bill. The next issue they say they want to tackle is tax reform. Is that any easier than health care . There is a reason it hasnt been done in a generation. Right, no, its not easier, and especially if they try to do it just on a party line vote. But again, i think this idea that they can just walk away from health care and just somehow wash their hands of this and just move on, i just think is whistling past the political graveyard here. Tax reform is difficult, but there may be ways you can get democrats on board. But i think republicans are going to feel now emboldened in congress to buck this president if they dont like what hes coming up with. If they think they can just jam this through on their own, i think they hen chuck, before i let you go, i want to ask you about a speech joe biden gave friday night in colgate university. Part of what he said, i had planned to run for president , and although it would have been a very difficult primary, i think i could have won. Do i regret being president . Yes, i was the best qualified. That was a quote from joe biden. For obvious reasons he didnt run. The death of beau biden occupied him, and people understood that. Hell be 78 on Inauguration Day in 2021. Is there any hopes that he may run for president . I think there is absolutely a chance that he will. Now, is that where the party wants to go . It may not be where the party is going to go. Is he liberal enough and progressive enough for where this Party Looks Like its going . I dont know and that would be a question i have. Obviously his 2020. So i dont think age would be a factor if he is just as healthy. I think for him its idealogy. He made a case during that speech that he knows just what kind of men and Women Donald Trump took from the democratic party. Thats the general election. He has to get there first. Chuck todd, well be watching meet the press. It should be another good one this week. Well talk about the Health Care Defeat and the push for tax reform. Thats because rainbow is the name that white people give cocker spaniels. Tracee ellis ross playing dr. Rainbow jackson on the popular show blackish, the role she won a golden globe for a couple months ago for the best tv actress in a comedy. She has broken through to a new group of fans with blackish. If tracee looks comfortable in the spotlight, its because she of diana ross. Tracee and i got together at houseman restaurant here in new york city for a fun sunday sitdown. Tracee, i noticed you walked in here with a little extra swagger and i think its because you are a golden globe winner. Its interesting you said swagger because i own it. The floor is no longer my surface. Dre, im proud of you. You affect change in a real and tangible way. I do do that, dont i . Dont get ahead of yourself. I save lives. Reporter ross role on the show won her a golden globe award. When you got up there and you got your trophy, you made a speech that hit a lot of people, the way you made your shoutout and said color and Colorful People whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. But i want you to know that i see you, we see you. As a woman of color, the reality is that ive always felt a sense of responsibility in terms of the images that i portray and the stories that i tell. I think that comes along with that and has in this country for a long time. Ross was born into show business. Her mother is legendary singer and actress diana ross. Im coming out diana, a golden globe winner herself for playing Billy Holliday in lady sings the blues. Also 44 years since your mother won a golden globe yourself. I didnt know that until the next day. Social media. I saw it on the gram. I saw it on the gram. Someone put it on the gram. What did your mom say you won . There was a lot of tears, a lot of yelping and screaming. My mom was really excited. Reporter tracees father was robert ellis silverstein. I called my dad when i got back to the table and he said, im exhausted, oh, my god, im exhausted i had to call the super so he could get me off the ceiling i had no idea Bernie Sanders was your dad. Thats amazing. The 44yearold ross and her siblings grew up under the spotlight. But her superstar mother always let them know they came before the music. Did she seem like a superstar to you . My mom was always a mom before she was in sparkly clothes. When she left, she was never gone for more than a week. She had a recording so she could still put us to bed and wake us i being dianas daughter did have its perks. I was at the white house when i was seven. Andy warhol painted me and my sisters. Ive had a lot of experiences that arent normal. Im blessed to be the daughter of diana ross, not because of who she is but because shes my mommy. Her professional life began in the world of fashion. A lot of people dont realize, because they know you as an actress now, that you had a goodsized career as a model and a fashion editor and that whole world. You did your homework there, buddy. I did. I wanted to model when i was young because of the clothes. Modelling is where i found myself, strangely, and i was styling my own shoots and sort of learning that whole industry. I went to new York Magazine and was in the Fashion Department with a small group of people. Im making myself 107. Im only 103, okay. From there i just kind of gently moved into what i was doing in college, which was acting. And i discovered acting in college, and it was the first time i felt like all aspects of me come alive. Ross committed to acting fulltime in the mid90s, landing some small movie roles. But her big break came in the year 2000 when she began an eightseason run as joan clayton on the popular show girlfriend girlfrien girlfriends. In 2008 the show ended abruptly. Tracee thought it would be the springboard to bigger things. It didnt happen. What do you mean it didnt happen . I was like, where is a new she wondered where her new life was headed and thats when the phone rang. What dont you know . The list of what you dont know is long. Number one is how to keep your man happy. Where is your man . She was offered a role on the new show called blackish playing dr. Rainbow johnson. This is a woman who was mixed and that was part of the role, and i am a mixed woman. I thought that was really interesting. This woman was a doctor. And i was like, i like this. Now in its third season, blackish finds laughs even in the thorniest issues of the day from race to religion to politics. Not everyone is pulled into day to day situations where theyre forced to pick a side. We found simpson not guilty of. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. I think there are a lot of things that are and smart in the way our show handles usually large, chunky matter but packs it in a way we all can receive it. You have fine american dolls but only two africanamerican dolls. At the same time we are not a family that happens to be black, we are a black family, and i think that is very new for how being a black family has been presented on television. I think often the family happens to be black. We talk about being black sometimes and we dont talk about being black sometimes. As ross enjoys her moment in the spotlight, shes also thinking about her next role. What hasnt happened . I had ideas of being married and having a brood of children right now. Youve still got time. For real. Im not over the hill. I have some friends who really . Of course. Oh, my god, we have hookups. Its like tinder on the today show. Blackish airs wednesdays on abc. Like her mom, tracee has some of the best hair in the industry. She has some amazing thoughts about what that says about her. Check out our website at today. Com sunday. And next week we sit down drizzle or sprinkles later today as temperatures climb into the mid to upper 50s. Then tomorrow morning, some sprinkles around. Then some sun back in the afternoon. Then on wednesday and thursday, well get some sunshine back with highs 60s wednesd its spring break, its raining today. Look how many are are here for spring break. I know. Someone came up with this brilliant plan to juice up the economy in east texas, and they used our laws and our legal system to do that. Some have even turned it into a business, using often frivolous patents to sue companies for lots of money. Theyre called patent trolls.
