Adding up to maybe one to three or four inches of sleet and snow combined. Current temperatures are just hanging around the freezing mark in the metro area. Down south Southern Maryland is above freezing. Outside today temperatures near 30 with a wintry mix of nearly anything Mother Nature can throw at us this morning. A snowball fight starts around 10 00 this morning. It will be windy. Snow flurries off and on through much of the day. Windchills will stay in the 20s all day today. But by tomorrow morning, windchills down into the single numbers and teens, and windchills will stay in the teens all day tomorrow. So windy and cold weather is here for the duration. A check on the storm team 4 radar with where the rain snow line is lets go over to sheena. That line has been fluctuating so weve been seeing areas of icy mix, areas of a rain snow type mix but what we are looking at now is some very heavy precipitation looking into Calvert County approaching Charles County and we are long of almost 3 inches an hour. There you see the icy mix near annapolis and that continues a little bit farther to the north. Thats been fluctuating around the district. We still have mostly snow with an icy mix here and there, but weve been seeing a lot of sleet, freezing rain, mostly snow back off to our west and near 81 but the sleet and freezing rain, thats whats giving us dangerous travel on the roads. Take a look at that heavy precipitation moving in. Almost three inches but as we go into the next 30 minutes to an hour that will be moving into the district and it could be falling in the storm of still an icy mix. But lets check those treacherous roads out there with Melissa Mollet. Good morning. Just a mess here this morning. So another problem, brand new here. The rest of the beltway you can see green here on the east side of the beltway. On the west side we are quite slow. That might be because all of this white right here, that is snow falling right now here across the area. Happening in your neighborhood. 95 expressway, that looks better than it did as youre headed inbound and northbound at 301. Tree on the right side of the roadway there. Remember, metro here running on that saturday schedule today. Metro bus on a severe snow plan and vre on s. Thank you. Weve seen a whole lot in Northern Virginia in terms of the weather. We saw sleet and then snow again and those heavy winds in leesburg. That is where we find justin finch live there this morning. What are you seeing now . Reporter still got the sleet falling down out here. Not much of a letup. Its cranked up a bit in the past couple minutes here. I want to show you a few things. We do have this sleet coming down. We had plows roll through here earlier. This is not what i would call a snowball. It is heavy, dense, it is like a lot of shaved i one big ball and this is all over the streets and roads here in Loudoun County and thats what crews are working with out here this morning trying to clear out these roads of that very heavy ice that has collected out here. Also too on the hood of our live truck here, the ice has also been building here as well. As you can see, ill push that a little bit there. Ill have to give it some elbow grease to clear that off. You will see that across vehicles in our area. Of course this is the same stuff thats coating plants out here as well as streets and roadways. I do want to show you if i can move here without falling over how this looks untouched. It is pristine. It looks soft. People may say i can go out here and manage driving in this kind of stuff but the not advised for you to come out here if you dont have to. A plow truck now going by here. The manager out here tells us that these trucks really need room to work especially on days like today when their main enemy out here is going to be these quickly building icy conditis. So they are advising everyone to stay at home. Watch it from your window. Do not come out. They advise you, they say if you want to come outside it might be better to do it in a few days. Not even tomorrow. Were live here inlessburg. Back in to you. Adam has been traveling along the beltway to see how conditions are changing on no road. How is it out there now. Reporter take a live look out the storm team 4 camera here on our windshield and weve got a mixture of sleet and freezing rain falling right off braddock road. Were on the inner loop in fairfax county. The eastern side of the beltway over in prince georges county, all rain over there. Really not a big deal, but you get over here and you start to see a little bit more slush. You can see here from the passenger side camera that weve got hooked up here, and just really the sloppy, wet with out here this morning. Not a fun ride by any stretch of the imagination. Take a look over to the left there. You can see the express lanes, those are cleared out pretty well, but theres also that pocket of patchy slush that youre dealing with and in a lot of ways this storm is a little bit harder than just the traditional snowfall because you can try to push this stuff out of the way, but then it just kind of puddles up and pools back into the road. So a trickty storm for sure and its definitely a changeable situation as you go around the entire beltway, guys. All right. Thank you. Now we want to shift locations to maryland. This is where derrick ward is live with a look at conditions there. You might have gotten the worst of it. Reporter well, take a look at germantown road. You can see pavement now. Thats something we havent seen since this all started, but dont be fooled. Youve still got to take it easy because there is some freezing rain falling and the wind is blowing and thats making it feel a lot it felt a little bit warmer than it has earlier and i dont know if those are the beginning stages of hypothermia or if the temperatures are going up a bit but it is a bit warmer but still, youve got to take it easy. People are starting to dig out now. You see a snow blower going in the background there and some plows at this gas station where we are parked. So it is starting to become something approaching a normal day. That is, by the clock and maybe if you look out, but once you get out here youll see its anything but normal. We got about three inches now. I think that is the total coming from germantown here and we dont see it here because its been blowing around a lot, but there is some significant snow here and its kind of hard because of that ice thats falling. So like weve been saying all day, its a combination of things. Nothing pleasant to be out in unless you absolutely have to. Back to you. Im a little worried about you. I think you need to go in the ck something serious. Reporter i was just kidding about the hypothermia. Okay. Good. Hes fine. Hes been standing outside in the wind and the cold. Since 2 00 a. M. Its delirium is what it is. If you need to get around you can still take metro today. Metro is open with service above and below ground. However trains will be running on a saturday schedule arriving every 12 minutes. Safe track single tracking on the yellow and blue lines will continue. Places are slick and slushy. Sheena, youve been telling us how messy it is out there. What can we expect in the next few hours . I dont see much changing. Now, what were seeing right now on the radar is a lot of very heavy rain through parts of Southern Maryland. Were going to watch this very closely. This precipitation is moving a little to the north because of the entire weather system is now trying to push off to the east a little bit quicker. So we are watching that very closely. We have just a wintry mix from the district down through fredericksburg and down through 95. Farther off to our west, thats all snow still, but we do have that icy mix right near annapolis and closer to the district and surrounding areas, thats where you see that pink and that is where we have the wintry mix. The motion of that very well be back in just a minute. Lets see whats going on out there on the roads. 66 east at 50. Fairfax this morning had a crash blocking the left side of the roadway. That has just cleared out of the way, so no more worries there. Germantown to the spur, going to take you a little extra time there. Top of the beltway looking okay here right now. 66 inbound is slow, so is 95 northbound. Again, a lot of slick spots across the area. Well get a look at the map of the beltway and show you where its going to be the most painful coming up. Thank you, lets go to the live desk. Tracking some problems at the airport. Thats right. If you have a flight to catch youre likely not going anywhere any time soon. Just looking over the latest cancellations from our big three airports. Flight aware. Com reporting nearly 500 cancelled out of bwi marshall. Over at Reagan National 379 cancelled flights and at Dulles Airport were seeing 288 cancelled. These numbers are roughly about half and half of the incoming and outbound flights. That misery map is showing about three quarters of flights either cancelled or delayed and always before you head out to the airport you want to call your airline to get the latest information on your flight. Back to you, eun. Thank you. Its 6 15. Our Team Coverage continues from other parts of the country being hammered by this snowstorm. Pamela os bourn joining us live now. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Were actually joining you right now from the center of reading, pennsylvania. Weve seen crews out all morning long trying to get these streets clear this morning. Just a few people braving it on the roadway this morning but i want to show you one thing. This is about how much snow weve gotten s five or 6 inches so far and the biggest changeover is that the snow thats falling is actually more pellet like. It feels like its icy coming down. I want to show you some more ice that weve seen. Weve been pointing out the ice on this fixture this morning but you can see two icicles so in addition to the snow thats on the ground, people are also dealing with ice this morning. There are a few Power Outages. We know that city hall is going to be closed. Only essential employees showing up to the city this morning. Theyre asking everyone to stay off the roads so they can get them clear. Reporting live, im pamela os bourn, back to you. Thank you. Also, running or rather blooming behind schedule are the Cherry Blossom trees. The peak blooms should start on sunday and last through next wednesday. Its a pretty short window. The initial bloom prediction was actually for today through friday, but all this weather changed everything, and put the trees in a tfragile state. Theyve emerged from their buds so theyre not as protected as they would be. We get a heavy wet snow that sits on them or again, three days of temperatures, you know, in the teens even, we could be looking at a year where perhaps the majority of the trees dont reach the peak bloom stage. Anything below 27 degrees could harm the blooms. The trees are going to be okay but the buds, i worry about them. Not going to be one of those postcard years i dont think. But what can you do . We were hoping for this storm to be a postcard storm with snow and pretty pictures, but its ice and yuck. Just warm enough to make it sleet around the city and that is really the kind of stuff that nobody likes. The only thing worse than sleet would be freezing rain so at least were not dealing with thought, i did anyway, i thought it would be more in the way of snowfall than just a sleetfall here in the city. A lot of snow though. Our friends and neighbors up north and west of the city, this picture sent to me by dave love in cumberland, maryland. You can always send me your pictures and dont forget tell me how much snow youve measured out there as well. He did not tell me how much snow but that looks like a solid 3 to 4 inches. Tim farris, he measured 7 inches. Locks like quite a bit on the table out there on the deck, so quite a bit of snow out north and west of town. But here in the city its mostly just been sleet unfortunately. Storm is really starting to intensify now. Its coming up the coast. Almost to ocean city, maryland right now, and as it goes up the coast its going to drag cold air back on the backside of it. So all snow north and west of town now. Been between about 4 and 6 inches now across the area. The transition here has been almost all sleet. Right through the heart of the i95 corridor, most of the immediate suburbs, youre within about a 25mile radius of washington, mostly sleet and thats the way its going to be continue here for the next little bit. Look at that little sliver of sleet and rain right up the i95 corridor. It stays all snow back out to the north and west. As the storm pulls away the cold air drains in behind it and as a result we may continue with light snow flurries and snow showers here for the remainder of the day. Totals, it really des depends on where you live. The big winters from a snow perspective will be up into maryland where you could get up to 10 inches or maybe a little more. Cold sticks around tomorrow. The blossoms are really in of way cold temperatures around here. By the weekend it will be milder, but those blossoms, they are going to be frozen and if not frozen, blown off entirely. Lets go to melissa now. Good morning, chuck. So taking a look right now again, storm team 4 x 4 driving around showing us whats going on in various areas. So take a look here. You know whats happening outside your door here this morning. 66 and 95, no big issues on either of those roadways at this point this morning. 270 at montrose road, take it slow. Were also seeing traffic going faster than is prudent, but you know, you have to get out, just be cautious. Thats the key. And if you dont let these plows get out here and do their job so the folks that have to come out later can indeed do it. Our photographer has been after me to do a snow angel and here you go. I done a snow angel. Thats the way you want to do it right now. You certainly dont want to get wet. But again, if youre going to go out and have some fun, this isnt the snow to do it. You cant make a snowball with this. Its pretty icy. So you know, look at it. Its nice to look at. Not as nice to be in, at least not right now. Who knows what will happen once the sun comes up. Things may change a bit. Maybe this ice will turn to rain. Thats up to chuck and sheena to tell you all about but i can tell you its cold in germantown. A lot of wind blowing. Streets are looking not a lot of traffic out. We havent seen a lot of pedestrians either.
