You know, a Record Number of students here in Montgomery County this year with more than 156,000 students starting the new school year this year. As you mentioned one of the big changes this year is the school start times. Theyll be later. It was a big debate for some time. The idea being that High School Students in particular get a little bit more sleep and so high school this year will start about 20 minutes later at 7 45. Middle School Students in Montgomery County are going to start also about 20 minutes later. Most of them starting about 8 15. Elementary School Students will shift by about ten minutes with their day starting at 9 00 or 9 25. 800 new educators is kind of a big deal. Some of them replacing educators who have left. Others of the 800 will just be adding to the growth in the county. The School District lost about 350 positions this school year. Now, the other big thing a lot of families are talking about in Montgomery County this year is the search for a new superintendent. That started in february, that search is going to relaunch this fall with the hope being that a new superintendent is in place by july. So lots of changes, lots of interesting things to talk about this year. Really the big one being the new start times for students this year. Back to you. All right, kristin, thank you. Also in maryland, Charles County students are back to school today. They built more snow days into the calendar by shortening spring break. Charles county will have free breakfast for all students next week to celebrate the growth of the Free Breakfast Program over the last five years. Its also back to school today for more than 75,000 students in Loudoun County. Heres a change some High Schoolers may like. They wont have to take midterm or final exams this year. Police officers have no confidence in police chief cathy lanier. The police union held a vote this weekend. It comes amid a huge spike in crime and the highest homicide rate in years. The Police Union Says it doesnt agree with the chiefs decision to end plainclothes vice units. She thinks the past weekend all hands on deck initiative bothered officers who were originally scheduled off of work. She said quote, when we have Violent Crime we have to make the sacrifices that we all swore we would make when we took this job. Now, d. C. Police just put out some new numbers as well from the all hands on deck weekend. They say they seized 21 illegal guns across the city since friday night. They arrested 16 people for possession of those guns. Earlier this month, chief lanier blamed illegal guns in part for the spike in crimes. Evidence markers lining the block where d. C. Police say someone shot two people. One of them a little girl. Officers talked with neighbors at third street southwest around 7 00 last night. They say both the girl and the man who were shot should recover. Its 6 07 now. Former Maryland GovernorMarvin Mandel has passed away at the age of 95. Larry hogan released a statement saying that maryland lost a great leader and friend. The General Assembly appointed him governor in 1969 after spiro agnew was elected nixons vice president.
