It was designed to stop blood clots from reaching the heart and the youngs. Thats right. The device was linked to more than two dozen deaths. As nbcs Stephanie Gosk reports the Company Changed to a new design but its led to a bigger problem. Reporter when chriss doctor told him five years ago he needed a blood clot filter to treat a genetic disorder, he didnt think twice. Its here to save your life. I said, okay, lets do it. Reporter the filter is a small wire trap inserted in the largest part of the body to prevent deadly blood clots into the heart and lungs. The doctor implanted a g2 express. In october a checkup revealed something alarming. The doctor said its not where its supposed to be. He said its dangerously close to your heart. He had spoken to two other surgeons and none of them would attempt to remove this. So they turned to a doctor at stanford who specializes in failed blood clot filters. It floated in front of our eyes literally. First into the rite aid atrium and then the right ventricle. Hes lucky it didnt pierce his heart. Thats right. Reporter hes stopped used them altogether. This is not the first time theyve been concerneden the bar version. The g2 was supposed to be safer than the previous. An nbc news investigation earlier this year showed the company knew the company had potentially fatal flaws. Our investigation uncovered Confidential Company documents that showed the recovery filter had higher rates of relative risks for gaffes, filter movement and records. According to the records the recovery device is associated with at least 27 deaths. Instead of recalling the problematic recovery they kept selling the filter which the company hoped would resolve its issues but according to its own internal records, it didnt. Documents from bard and the fda shows the replaced filtered had more complications than the previous ones. They expressed concerns about problems with migration, tilting, and perforation. Is the g2 safe for patients . I think the data speaks for itself. The number of complications, the frequency of severe failures makes it obvious that it was never safe to be implanted. The doctor sailed both should have been recalled. They were not. Bard kept the g2 series on the market for five years and sold more than 160,000. So far least 12 deaths have been associated with the filters. What weve learned the hard way is we can no longer rely on the medical Device Companies to do whats in the best interest of the patient and we can no longer rely on the fda to properly regulate these devices. Reporter our first report on bard filters prompted Charles Grassley to send this letter to the fda asking in part what action the fda takes when new information about an approved medical device becomes known. The fdas got only one spopgs. Its not the company. Its the public. Reporter senator grassley told us that the fdas response was incomplete and he has more questions as he decides what steps to take next. He told us while all medical deviss carry some risk, its filters are an important clinical option for some physicians and the company steadfastly believes in the safety and efficacy of the devices. Four days ago he met with the doctor for a followup. One of the filters has a missing arm at the bottom, do you see that . Yes, i did. Grateful to be saved from a filter he thought was saving his life. You seem shaken to me. Its very difficult to think that you could have missed it. And you caught it. Luckily. That was nbcs Stephanie Gosk reporting. Nbc asked the fda why bards recovery and it wasnt recalled. They didnt answer. They say theyve investigated everything and organized a longtime critical trial looking at the safety and effect of those currently used.
