Many democrats say cutting amtrak funding is the worst move movemove move is the wrong move if the country wants safer train travel. Edward lawrence with another look. Reporter this is going to be another fight. Amtrak is going to deal with deep budget cuts in the wake of this derailment investigation. Now members of a house panel for appropriations voted to cut amtraks budget. If this cut holds, amtrak will get 1 billion less than what the president earmarked for his budget. Now the vote went down party lines. Republicans say you cant tie amtrak funding to the derailment and we have to live with the money thats available. Democrats say the infrastructure is a priority and should get the money it needs. The transportation part of the budget is one of the biggest being considered. Now thats one of the reasons this is getting a lot of debate. Now, if amtraks budget passes as is, the rail system would get 1 billion to use across the entire system. Now congress only has about 18 days left or exactly 18 days left to pass the transportation and highway projects to reauthorize the funding for those. Reporting live in washington, edward lawrence. Now back to you. Thank you. The news4 iteam is looking into one of the key factors, one of the Automatic Systems that could have automatically slowed it down. Congress mandated positive train control after a crash between a Freight Train and commuter train in california in 2008. New this morning it was a close call for five firefighters after being pulled from a house fire in Montgomery County. This is Megan Mcgrath with more on what we know about this. Good morning. Thats what caused the scare here earlier in the overnight hours. Those five firefighters were able to get out okay. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution and were told that they dont have any burns or serious injuries. Now, the homeowner apparently had a fire going in the fireplace. That caused a chimney fire which then extended to the roof. The roof is made out of wood shingles so once the fire got up into the roof line area, the attic area, it really got going.
