Right now a water main break in beltsville could affect your morning commute. This is happening on route 1 near montgomery road. Megan mcgrath is live there with whats going on. Reporter a lot of people take route 1 in the southbound direction from beltsville to hop on the beltway, but theres a problem this morning. Take a look at the hole in the righthand lane right at montgomery road by the shell station. We had a water main break overnight that created this huge hole. And were also now smelling natural gas in the area. In fact, theres now a Washington Gas truck on the scene as well. This is going to take some time to repair. So what we have here is a lane closure on southbound route 1. The righthand lane is closed. Thats going to be the case for a while. You can get by to the left in the northbound direction if youre heading to laurel, youre okay. Northbound lanes are open. But as we start to see volume increase this morning, we are expecting some tieups in the area and a lot of people are trying to make their way to the beltway. Keep that in mind to give yourself a little extra time because this is certainly going to be here throughou the morning rush hour. More on traffic and well send it over to melissa. Now virginia is one of many states to make gay marriage legal. This couple exchanged their vows outside the arlington courthouse yesterday afternoon. The Supreme Court refused to hear appeals and the Lower Court Ruling came into effect. They became one of the first virginia couples to marry under the new law. They also found the alexandria couple that planned to get married in the district and now they will make changes. It is really important for me to get married in Northern Virginia. Looks like well have to change the venue so well be looking at a couple new sites on the virginia side here in alexandria along the riverfront. The couple rushed to the alexandria courthouse to receive the last marriage certificate that said bride and groom. A new version is going to reflect the new law. And the u. S. Today we could find out when a former day care worker will stand trial for alleged child abuse in virginia. Prosecutors say Kiera Spriggs helped to assault three toddlers. Spriggs along with melissa jordan are accused of stomping on the childrens toes and covering their mouths with blankets. One child was taken by helicopter with lifethreatening injuries in a crash last night. One adult was hurt. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. The Catholic University must decide whether students can host a program about gay rights. College democrats plan to show milk, the story of harvey milk with remarks from a gay rights advocate. The School Canceled the event as they call on officials to let the show go on as scheduled. The Catholic University says the film night is postponed not canceled until the school determines the intent of the program. In the day ahead, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments to decide whether prisoners should be allowed to grow a short beard because of their religious beliefs. The case involved the arkansas inmate. Prison guards there refuse to allow beards in prison except for medical reasons. They say its a matter of security because prisoners can hide banned items in their beards. 18 other states are backing that argument. The department of Veterans Affairs is firing four Senior Executives following the nationwide scandal over long wait times. The top purchasing leader at the Veterans Health administration and the directors of the v. A. Congress passed a new law making it easier for the agency to fire Senior Leaders suspected of wrongdoing. Protesters have new confidence today in ferguson, missouri. A federal judge ruled that police cannot make those people move if they are protesting peacefully. For months officers forced demonstrators to walk around while protesting or face arrest. Police say the 9yearold was hit by a stray bullet and is now in grave condition. The shooting happened friday night at the mayfair mansions complex in northeast washington. Police did not find weapons near the scene. No arrests have been made. Well, after a close call firefighters in Montgomery County are without a fire truck. Look at this. A ladder truck caught fire in silver spring. That truck was headed to a fire when a mechanical problem caused it to fill with smoke yesterday. It didnt take long for the crews to put out the flame there is, but because of the damage the truck is out of service. The Department Says lit bring in another truck from the reserve unit. A lot of clouds throughout the morning and breaks in the clouds. By noontime, we aught to get sunshine breaking out. During the afternoon, going partly sunny. By 3 00 in the afternoon, showers begin to move in from the west coming in to western maryland and the panhandle of west virginia. By 6 00 p. M. Into the shenandoah valley. The showers continue to advance off to the east. Getting closest to the metro area at 7 30 to 8 00 this evening. After that, well have the showers getting closer to the metro area around midnight. In howard, southbound scaggsville road is closed from the downed tree with your alternate at 32. They are known as beacons to pick up cell phone signals and could have been used to send advertisements straight to your phone. The city scrapped the project and crews are now removing the beacons from the phone booths. You know the redbox kiosks, this happens to me every time, the redbox kiosks at the grocery store, the company is shutting down their streaming service in an online message to customers redbox will only allow streaming until midnight pacific time. Verizon launched redbox instant last year but it never gained ground against competitors and hulu plus. The kiosks will remain in the stores. Thats the only place you can rent a movie these days. This happened shortly before 2 00 on bearney place off Martin Luther king jr. Parkway in anacostia. Right now they are looking for the man who shot the victim. Right now a bill is expected to be voted on to allow doctors prescribe medical marijuana as they see fit. Also on the docket, voting on whether nonviolent marijuana offenders should have their records sealed. This comes in the wake of the councils move to decriminalize possession of small amounts of pot. Today voters in virginia will get help deciding who they will choose to be their next u. S. Senator. The candidates in the race will square off in a live debate right here on nbc4. You will have more chances to register to vote this week in arlington. The Voter Registration office says they are adding more places you can go to as we get closer to next weeks deadline. If you dont register by next tuesday, you wont be able to vote in the election this year. The office says it plans to keep its locations open for longer as well. Coming up on 5 35 right now, this week George Mason University is hosting a campuswide Sexual Assault awareness week. Today students at the fairfax campus will make rape recovery kits for the hospitals. When someone is sex hully assaulted, their clothes are kept for evidence and many go home in paper scrubs. These include clothing, toiletries, a personal note and a teddy bear. No the search for the missing uva student, investigators plan to comb through 70 of the area where she was last seen by friday. The search for Hannah Graham is focused on the eightmile radius near downtown charlottesville. The police chief promised he would find hannah. Jesse matthew is in court for her disappearance and will be appearing in december. Today latino students make up nearly 30 of Montgomery County schools. Katherine suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was the last one to see her children sarah and jacob. Now her grandmother says katherine needs to take her medicine to find answers. Not meant in a harmful or hurtful or vindictive way. I want my grandchildren back. She says shes considering seeking guardianship over her daughter and that could give her the authority to make medical decisions for her.
