This happened in Montgomery County at the intersection of mcguff avenue. The car that was involved there very badly damaged. The people in the car were taken to different trauma units. Reporter this video shows the effect of whooping cough. This letter was sent to four schools informing them a dozen kids have been found to have the contagious disease. It was found at robert frost middle school, julius west middle school, and cabin john, and cold spring elementary. Plus two private schools. The illness can be traced to a science camp. Well, i had no idea. Im really very surprised to hear it especially at the beginning of the school year. Reporter the symptoms of whooping cough include a runny nose, cough that lingers then worsens, and the whooping sound. Its treated with antibiotics. Jackie bensen, news4 today. Right now doctors are seeing the biggest spike in whooping cough since the 1940s when a vaccine was first made against it. Some new strains of whooping cough have been resistant to those vaccines. D. C. Police are reversing a controversial policy to put detectives on street duty. The first would pull them from their cases one week a month. Now the chief says detectives from individual districts will be included. But other investigating crimes will still be assigned to street duty. And some say the program could interfere with investigations. The police union has not commented on the changes. Today separate events are planned in honor of the unarmed teen killed by a Police Officer in ferguson, missouri. First after noon, a prayer will take place at the mg memorial. And later at 7 00 p. M. There will be a rally for Police Reforms in front of union station. Thats going to be followed by a march down h street. If you are heading downtown today, some metro stations are closed on the red line. First 4 traffic gives us the full rundown on the rails. Metro is not taking a break from track work this Holiday Weekend. There are some station closures you should know about. On the red line two stations are closing for the weekend. The bethesda and Medical Center stations shutdown and closed through monday. Orange and silver line trains will run every ten minutes. Green line trains will run every 15 minutes. Reporter in this hectic world you may feel youre on call 24 7, but your doctor is not. I work in the Health Department and i see people every day that dont have access to medical care. Reporter its that frustration retailers are banking on as more are opening lowcost, instore medical clinics. And today americas biggest retailer walmart opened two new clinics in georgia. Making a move to deliver primary care to its 5,000 u. S. Stores. Walmart is focused on opening these clinics in rural areas where there isnt as much access to care. Reporter with walkin visits costing patients and their Insurance Companies just 40, analysts say these clinics could be a game changer. These could have ripple effects and also challenge hospitals and doctors to reconsider their pricing as well. Reporter there are merely 2,000 retail clinics in stores like target, walgreens, and cvs. They are staffed by Nurse Practitioners or physician assistants. Most are open seven days a week and have evening hours. They are used for treating common colds and flu, treating some infections, minor sprains, and vaccinations. Experts caution retail clinics should not be the primary source for primary care. Especially for children. We dont recommend that parents take children under the age of 18 months to a retail clinic. Reporter lu was jogging here in rockville with his 2yearold son mark in a baby jogger. At the park where he brought his son to play, michael collapsed in cardiac arrest. She called 911. Heather, listen heather you need to start doing cpr right now. Reporter michael was brought here to the hospital where he lay in a coma. At first he had almost no brain activity. Then after ten days miraculously he woke up. His wife mary has been pregnant throughout this ordeal. To always think of the memories nathan wouldnt remember with his dad. And this baby potentially never meeting her father was really heart breaking. But, you know, its a miracle hes alive. And we are just so thankful. Reporter michael got to celebrate with birthday cake. To know i played any part in him being here on his 32nd birthday and being able to experience his daughter being born, you know, in a few months. I mean, thats nominal. Really proud that we saved someones life. Im just so thankful that hes alive. The bison is the mascot of both schools. Bison are among the animals in the zoos very first exhibit 125 years ago. The zoo brought them back to honor its birthday this year.
