For lgbtq teens, suicidal thoughts are common and it begs the question what can be done to decrease the risk of suicide for this vulnerable group. Legalization of samesex marriage was associated with the significant reduction in Suicide Attempts in teens who identify as a sexual minority. Dr. Joshua weiner is here with more on these findings. Thanks so much for joining us. Lets talk broad first and well zone in, about the risk of suicide for teens and young adults. So most of the data that we have on this comes from the cdc study called the Youth Risk Behavior survey. The suicide rate for High School Aged Kids is about so 8 of High School Kids will report that at some point in the last year, theyve made a Suicide Attempt. But its 6 for heterosexual kids but we talked about that percentage but its pretty unbelievable to think one in 12 High School Students report having made a Suicide Attempt within the last year. Is that number are we seeing that number increase . Is that on the rise . No, its been relatively stable. Youll see little bumps up and down over the years. Theres been a little uptick in the last few years but in general, the number has stayed about the same surprisingly over the last 20 plus years. If that has stayed relatively stagnant, what are the highlights of the study . Well, what this study did first of all, it was looking at when states enact the marriage policy obviously now its universal throughout the country with the Supreme Court but what they did, they did a Statistical Analysis and looked from 1999 to 2015, the Youth Risk Behavior surveys. They are asking kids about suicidal thoughts suicidal actions rather as well as how they identify sexually. They found for kids in which the state had enacted samesex marriage policies, there was a 7 decrease in the number of kids who in subsequent years reported having made a Suicide Attempt. But, that number was actually 7 overall and 14 for those kids who are lgbtq. You can attach that to policy then . Exactly. What they are doing, it is a careful Statistical Analysis so they can figure out, well, was this specifically related to the policy change. That decrease then, wo decrease in stigma or a legitimacy of how they identify themselves . Absolutely. I think thats what most people would suggest, that these people are now feeling, you know what, im being understood and being not marginalized as well as ive been feeling marginalized by society. Dr. Weiner, where can young adults and teens and parents go for information as it pertains to this information or that may be feeling suicidal thoughts or having suicidal thoughts . You know, theres a great website, National Alliance for mental illness, theres suicide. Org, theres lots of data out there. I think its really interesting. If people go on google and go to the Youth Risk Behavior survey, they can get a lot of information. I think its going to be interesting because it can be a good segue into parents and other adults having these types of conversations with their teens. As we said, 1 astronomical number. We have to make sure things we talk about, absolutely. Thank you so much for your time. My pleasure. An important conversation there and now a major social Media Company is helping to prevent suicide. Facebook is including new options for people to report if they think someone might hurt themselves while broadcasting on facebook live. It would allow facebook to contact crisis workers if a person is it in danger. And making it easier to report posts about suicide or selfinjury. Overlooking our reston camera there, some sunshine there as well as around much of the region. Severe thunderstorm watch until 5 00 p. M. This area includes east and West Virginia and most of virginia and maryland until 5 00 in the aften. Miles per hour when the line of storms comes through with possible Power Outages. Right now the storm team 4 radar showing this line of storms breaking up a bit as its getting into the mountains. By 1 00, this area in the orange and red, thats where they could start reintensifying as they get in the shen andoah valley. Down farther south to culpepper and then right into the metro area. Montgomery, prince georges, the district and along the 95 corridor from baltimore down to fredericksburg, thats by around 2 30 to 3 00 this afternoon. Then the line continues to streak off to the east rapidly moving in the Southern Maryland along the Western Shores of the bay by 4 00 or show. That will quickly dissipate after it crosses the bay. After that winds shifting to the north and west we get gusty winds tonight into tomorrow bringing in chillier area. Winds and Power Outages, cant rule out a brief isolated tornado. The tenday outlook showing after the temperatures plummet tonight well see it getting chilly on thursday and friday and saturday. Then a bit milder after that. Thats the way it looks. Thanks, tom.
