Hackers are posing as Major Companies we use every day like netflix and gmail to try to trick you into handing over really sensitive information. And once you click on the link, they have complete information to all of your private information. Nbcs jeff rossen shows us how to tell whats real and whats fake. Reporter there are new scams happening right now. In this one, hackers are targeting netflix users, sending fake emails that look like they came directly from the company, asking you to update your information, even your Social Security number. It looks so real, unsuspecting customers are handing over everything. And now, another one bubbling up. This new scam aimed at gmail users. The email looks like it came from a friend. When you click the attachment, it asks you to log back into your account. The hackers watching your key strokes and stealing your information. And for the hackers, its easy. Okay, so im creating a fake email. Reporter right now, this one is sending emails, trying to trick people. Luckily, this hacker is working with us. Jim stickily, a cybersecurity expert. His target today, my mom and dad. Yes, a personal experiment. Will they open this ecard from someone they dont know. Were going to do exactly what the hacker does. Ive told them a thousand times. I say, dont open attachments, dont open links if you dont know exactly who its from. Anything dangerous. Were just doing a test. But the bad guys, thats all they have to do. You click on that link, and theyd be in yoursome. They could take over your system, turn on your web cam, watch what youre doing, complete control. Reporter minutes after sending the email, jim confirms my mom opens it and clicks the link. Hours later, my dad does, too. Time to pay a visit to my parents. Theyre not expecting me. Oh, my god hi what are you doing here . hi, mom. Hi, dad. Oh, my god hi, dad. How are you . What are you doing here . You guys clicked on an ecard. Do you remember clicking on an ecard last week . I guess, i dont know . We actually had a computer expert send that to you and this is what the hackers use to link in. We could have had full access to your computer. This is a test. Unbelievable. We opened it. We did. You know, i try to be so careful with this stuff. Were used to pressing we use phones all the time. So we casually click it without thinking. I told you a million times not to open that stuff. Youre any own parents, you dont will not to me . Why would you listen to me . Promise me youll never do that again. I promise. That means you have to think about everything you do. You get it now . Yes. Reporter okay, those are my parents, but surely my crack team of investigative producers will know better. Lets see. Jim is back at it and this time, hes upping the stakes. Not only sending a link, but also asking for additional personal information, address, phone number, and Social Security number. The email looks like its from nbc, offering a phone upgrade, but if my producers look closely, and i hope they do, they should notice the address isnt a real nbc account. This is what criminals do. They send an email out that looks like it comes from the company you work for, only, its not really them. Fall for this. I mean, theyre smart yes. But theyre going to fall for it. Reporter sure enough, jim confirms my three producers not only clicked the link but enter all their personal information. I call a team meeting to get them altogether. How are you . Here to talk about your phone upgrades. Phone upgrades . Did you get an email . I did, yeah. Katherine, did you get one . Yes, im very excited about it. That was from a hacker. What . Were here to test you to see if you would open that, and you did, and you actually put in all of your personal information, Social Security numbers, addresses. It was from nbc. So were not getting iphone 7s . We are not getting new iphones. Havent i taught you anything . You have produced stories the about this, about checking email addresses and not opening attachments and putting in personal information, but all three of you did. Im ashamed. Pretty sure i put in my social. We didnt put anything on your computers or ive literally done this story. Reporter an important lesson from my family to yours. Did you learn something to do . Yeah, i got you to come to florida. I learned not to open the door. That was jeff rossen reporting. Just to reiterate, jeff did not actually collect any personal information from his parents or producers. This was just done to show you anyone can fall for the scam. How can you be sure the link is safe . Experts say the best way is to pick up the phone and ask. And heres another tip, if you do see a link before you click it, make sure you have a little s after http. Thats the s, that means secure. If his investigative reporters are going to put their Social Security what chance do we have . And thats why its easy to remember. It takes one second to check with your administrator or whoever. Reporter since people tend to spend more time indoors in the winter, its important to be diligent when it comes to keeping your home clean.
