A gunman has killed five people at a nightclub in mexico. More than a dozen other people were hurt. The shooting happened early this morning outside the blue parrot nightclub hosting an event part of an electronic Music Festival. Of the victims, we now know two are from canada, one from italy, one from colombia. Police say the shooting was a result of a disagreement between people inside the club and said security guards had come under fire when they tried to help. Four people are now being questioned. New at midday, recovery teams found the black box from a plan that crashed in kyrgyzstan. It hit a village. Some officials report that 37 people died but the government has not confirmed that number yet. The site is debris from the plane is everywhere including protruding from a house. Several people including children are hurt. The cause of the crash is not clear. This morning, two kids saved from the baltimore house fire are doing better according to the fire department. Fairfax county Police Looking for a stabbing suspect on the run. This after a soccer game turned violent in fairfax county. Police there say that the person fl the soccer field. This happened at South Lakes High School yesterday. Officers say it started with an argument during a game. There were no students involved but this kind of violence has one father on alert. I wouldnt expect a double stabbing to evolve from a soccer match. A neighborhood soccer match. And a great deal of concern. Police think this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the surrounding communities. Employer is required by congress to report on their hiring of women and minorities. When we asked nearly 30 local u. S. Senators and u. S. Representatives to report on diversity within their own staff, only seven did so. We found congress doesnt have to follow the same diversity laws it mandates for the rest of the workforce. Now a caucus representing black u. S. Senate staffers are proposing a bill to propose a chief diversity staffer. They say the practice should be in place for congressional job openings too. You mandate that some of the applicants and interviews that you conduct for senior positions, the applicants have to be people of color. Even if they dont get the jobs. Prince georges county schools remember the impact he had on education and the king Center Posted a collection of photos from kings life and white house photographer posted a series of photos of president obama celebrating mlk day throughout his presidency. Some really incredible images of his work in the white house and with his family as well and he said on this day dr. King would have been proud to know that his vest was displayed in the office of the first africanamerican president. Across the country people are also honoring Martin Luther king jr. s legacy by Service Projects in our area. They are about to finish up a Service Marathon. The new local Nonprofit Service never sleeps organized this effort and the founder is here to tell us about it. She brings along some wonderful participants from other groups that have spent the last 72 hours doing a whole lot of good in our region. I do want to start off with whitney. First, tell us a little bit about this marathon and what youve been able to accomplish over the last few days. Sure. Thank you so much for having us. The idea of Service Never sleeps is that just as social injustice never sleeps, combatting it should never sleep ever. What better way to bring in mlks day of service than by having a 72hour Service Marathon where we had service taking place every minute of every hour. We partnered with over 10 local nonprofits to facilitate service to their shelters, crisis hotlines, soup kitchens, Youth Centers to support issues of homelessness, violence against veteran and military families, Mental Health. An array of social issues. I know, maurice cook joins us now. He leads a group that aims to empower people of color. Tell us about your hand in this project. It helped us improve our Financial Accounting system and our marketing and branding and weve been able to recruit more volunteers to get directly in the lives of d. C. Youth providing them with various activities including financial literacy, College Awareness and preparation and our athletic programs enrolling in tennis and swimming. Strength in numbers. Good to hear about that and increase there. Lauren anderson, your organization is also part of this mission. How important has it been for you to have these volunteers onboard . So important. So our organization, the Josh Anderson foundation promotes youth, Mental Health and prevents teen suicide o administrative and fundraising tasks of the organization are forgotten. Our Service Never sleeps fellows have helped us fulfill those tasks so that we can further our program. I really credit their help to our successful launch of our latest program. And you are also a fellow. What has your personal experience been like and what have you been able to witness and take away from these last few days . Im actually an analyst for my day job and i do homelessness policy and research. Its really important for me to be able to have that ground level perspective when i work on that. I actually have been paired up with Capitol Hill Group ministry which is a nonprofit working on homelessness in the area. Im able to really put human faces to those data sets and real peoples stories to our Public Policy and it benefits me personally and professionally being an advocate in the community and also being able build my skill set while helping this nonprofit. Thats really great to hear. Were talking about the homeless, Mental Health issues, financial literacy. This really touches all parts of our community. Are you tired yet . 72 hours. Lets be real. Ive been trying to promote this hashtag to inspire to be tired. We facilitate a workshop that teaches Community Members how to promote social justice in their local communities but then we also pair professionals with local nonprofits to do sill based service and help excellent nonprofits execute solutions they already have.
