I knew where he was going to end up and i sat here many afternoons asking myself why that is a scene from one of the most iconic plays of the american theater, arthur millers a view from the bridge. It begins showing tomorrow at the kennedy center. And here to tell us all about the production is thomas j. Ryan, a wonderful actor of film and television f welcome. Hi, thank you for having me. Tell us a little about the play. Why dont you give us a little synopsis. Its a famous play writing in the 1950s by the Great American writer, arthur miller. It takes place in red hook brooklyn. Which is very fancy now, at that time it was a Slum Community in new york city. And its about a family, a Nuclear Family and their cousins who come from italy as in red hook. And what happens when immigrants come into a community that is very set in its ways. And actually some of the themes are actually important to us today. Immigration, illegal immigration. And a lot of the things that happened. And ill talk to you about that. You have a very pivotal role, you play alfieri. Are you an attorney in the play . I am. But im several things, because i begin the play by narrating. You think at the beginning im narrator of our town or something. And about halfway through the play i enter into the action as the lawyer of the main character. So its a really interesting trajectory for me. Unlike the other actors, i get to look out at the audience and see whos there. And really connect with them oneonone. Well i wonder if some of the themes we know that one of the characters, the leading male character, i guess youre the leading male character. But the man who plays the that probably was shocking back in the 50s to see this played out. When about today . I think its as shocking as it was then. Shes about to turn 18 in the play. And you know one of the beautiful things about the play is its ambiguous. You dont know that hes falling in love with her. But we sort of see that perhaps the behavior is not quite right. And she falls in love with one of these immigrant boys who come from and thats the explosion that happens in the middle of the play. Now what about theres a gay accusation in the play. Something that people didnt talk about that much back in the 50s when it was first written. How is that received today . Well its interesting. Because in the 50s, you wouldnt write in a play that im accusing someone of being a homosexual. Instead he kept saying something about him isnt right. Or something about him seems odd because he likes music and he sort of dancing around it a little bit. Which i think was necessary in the 50s, one of the benefits is now it has a dramatic texture is that is not quite named and i think it shocks people. I think people are shocked today as they were in the 50s. And people will walk away having felt theyve learned something from this . I think so but i dont want people to think were a preachy, political play. Because i dont think that was the intention, intention. Certainly in this moment, in this city, in this country, talking about issues of immigration and deportation will resonate for people, but the play has many avenue it is goes down. Thats just one. Thomas j. Ryan, i cant wait to see you. Please come. I hear youre terrific. Thank you so much. At the kennedy center. Erika . Thanks, barbara.
