This is video from hermine moving through cedar key, florida, overnight. The storm brought high winds, a lot of rain. Right now Tropical Storm hermine is moving across georgia and south carolina. Parts of those states and northern carolina or North Carolina, i should say, are under a tornado watch until 4 00 this afternoon. We have Team Coverage of Tropical Storm hermine. Nbcs jay gray will give us a live report from where the storm is headed next. But first, lets check in with storm team 4s chuck bell. Hes got an update on how the storm will impact your Holiday Weekend. Hey, chuck. Hey, good morning. If your plans take you to the Shenandoah Valley or the mountains of west virginia, you have nothing to worry about. If your plans take you to the beach, you need to think about whether or not to cancel your plans or not because the weekend at the coastline could be very windwhipped and rainsoaked. Heres the very latest. This is as of the so this literally just came in from the National Hurricane center. The new position has the storm here just to the west of savannah, georgia. Maximum sustained winds are now at 50 Miles Per Hour. Theres not going to be much more weakening between now and the time it reemerges over the waters of the western atlantic here. The forecast in time Going Forward here does continue to bring hermine closer up the coastline. By saturday at 8 00 at night. So 8 00 p. M. Saturday the storm is just about off the direct coast of Virginia Beach. Heres ocean city and rehoboth right here. The real issue is saturday into sunday. The storm continues to go out to sea but then really slows down and waddles around out here just off the delaware and the jersey shore. This is monday, 8 00 in the morning. By tuesday, still just off the delaware and the new jersey coastline, so this is going to be a Long Duration event of wind, beach erosion and battering waves and coastal flooding along the beaches. Impacts here from the Washington Area westbound will be lower. In a few more minutes. We continue our Team Coverage of Tropical Storm hermine with jay gray, who is live in savannah, georgia. Reporter hey, molette, good to talk to you. Look, were getting a break right now and thats how these things work. The outer bands have moved through in the morning. In between those you get a bit of a lull as you get closer to the central part or eye of the storm, its more compact and tightly wound. What weve seen today is battering rains and high winds. We have water already standing in low areas here. We expect more throughout the day. And the winds. This is an older city with beautiful old trees but it could pull down some of the branches there and cause a problem with some of the trees toppling over. That could pull as well the power lines down so crews have been stationed and ready to move in if thats the case. We do know that this storm has turned deadly, unfortunately. We just learned through governor rick scott in florida that at least onema was killed as a tree fell over during the storm there. So hermine now a deadly storm. Tropical storm status now as it continues to move through georgia here. Well see more bands. Well see a lot more rain and stronger winds throughout the day. It will move through the carolinas and up the east coast as well, so this storm not done. Its going to cause problems for millions over the next several days of this Holiday Weekend. Thats the latest live here in savannah. Molette, back to you. All right, thank you so much. The storm may be getting weaker but its still quite strong. Were expecting high winds, heavy rains, so not a lot of time maybe being spent on the beach. Not this time around. Weve been talking to folks all morning long and they say theyll just do the best they can. Theyll make do. A beautiful morning at the bay bridge. Clear blue skies and a gentle breeze. Reporter and they have started to run twoway traffic on that westbound span to give another lane headed in the direction of the beaches to keep things flowing. So far so good. Especially our friends and neighbors in the Shenandoah Valley may not know theres a storm off the coastline at all. What just came in as of the 11 00 hour with the new position of the storm itself, also new watches and warnings along our coastline to tell you about. Now have been upgraded to a Tropical Storm warning for the lower parts of the Chesapeake Bay. The Northern Neck of virginia, the lower bay, out to the eastern shore. So all these red shadings here, that is now a Tropical Storm warning. Tropical storm watches remain in place everywhere else. What does that mean . Tropical storm conditions. Winds 40 to 60 Miles Per Hour possible in the advised cloudiness drifting into southern maryland. The rain edge is just getting to the virginia North Carolina bord border. The center of circulation is 500 miles away are ocean city but theres the swirling rain mass just west of savannah, georgia. The track of this storm brings it off the outer banks of North Carolina late tonight into tomorrow. By saturday night well off the coast of Virginia Beach and then the storm slows down and meanders around off the jersey coastline. That means a prolonged period of bad weather along the beaches. Rain moving in late tonight down in tidewater, virginia. Heres 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. Theres washington right there. Notice with time the heaviest rain stays confined right to the coast. The i95 corridor certainly cant rule out passing showers during the course of the day tomorrow, tomorrow night and into sunday, but the heavy, steady rain is going to stay well to our east really along the immediate coastline. So bigger, sure there. Shenandoah valley, hardly a drop. Breezy and showers around the metro. Breezy and windy at times. Well get more on the impact and well give you the tenday forecast which brings big summer heat back next week. She is ready for some football, but is she ready to leave the area shes called home for so many years . Doreen gentzler sits down with d. C. Police chief cathy lanier for a oneonone interview. Our area is notorious for bad commutes but now theres serious proof to back up those claims. Why people here spend so much time and money. And we continue to track Tropical Storm hermine which made landfall in florida early this morning as a hurricane. Where its headed next and the impact it could have on your weekend plans coming up. Happening right now, Tropical Storm hermine is still pounding the southeast part of the country. Look at the span of this storm. It actually made landfall as a hurricane early this morning. The first to do so in florida in a decade. And now parts of georgia and the carolinas are dealing with a much weaker but still very dangerous storm. Lets turn our attention now to bell. Whats the very latest in this storms path . The thinking is that this storm is going to be just far enough offshore in order to really spare the Shenandoah Valley and the mountains of almost anything in the way of an exact at all. From the i95 corridor eastbound to the bay is where things get a little dicier. The new track, keeping the storm well offshore, but just because its offshore doesnt mean we wont feel anything, has a very large wind field, Tropical Storm force winds extend out several hundred miles from the center. So this will be a humongous beach impact with flooding and beach erosion. Nice out there for now but the impact in and around the metro over the weekend, rain and showers possible but no heavy rain in and around washington. The winds certainly breezy on saturday, stronger winds i think on sunday. So breezy to blustery conditions saturday, saturday night into sunday. Not much of a flood threat around here. There could be coastal flooding on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay but most will be lo weekend, hit and miss showers but it doesnt look like any driving rainstorm. Ill give you that tenday forecast in a few minutes. An Anacostia High School student was killed in a student in the middle of the afternoon. This happened on 16th street in southeast. D. C. She served the district for decades and soon d. C. s police chief will face a new challenge. As Doreen Gentzler found out, the decision to leave didnt come easy for cathy lanier. D. C. Police chief cathy lanier will leave her post in two weeks for a new job as head of security for the nfl. Shes been on the force here 26 years here, almost ten as the chief. Her decision to leave was a surprise, even to her. Chief lanier talked with me about it thursday. Ive been so passionate about policing my whole life. I couldnt imagine doing anything else. At the same time, i didnt feel that passion for doing it somewhere other than here because this is my city. Reporter chief lanier says shell bring that to the nfl, a job that comes with huge challenges, like super bowl security, player misconduct allegations and much more. But this is a woman whos never backed down from a challenge. Like the time he filed a sex discrimination complaint against her colleagues at the d. C. Police Department Just five years into her career there. She won, but i remember a captain, who i liked very much, saying to me at the time, i was a sergeant. He said, you did the right thing and everybody here supports you, but youll never go past the rank of captain. And so for the next several years of my career i took that to heart because everything above the rank of captain is appointed. Hes right, i wouldnt have gone above the rank of captain for the next few years because thats how the environment was back then. But i guess he was wrong. Shes become the most popular public official in town and thats because shes out in the community all the time. Shews team to do the same. Lanier and many others believe this relationship has helped d. C. Avoid the dangerous and deadly confrontations between other Police Departments and their communities. I feel very, very good with our relationship with the community and that stands out the most because of whats happening nationally. I guess the other thing that really stands out to me is the ability to drop the homicide below 100. Cathy lanier will move to new york city after a lifetime here in the d. C. Area. She says shes got to get a whole new wardrobe. Remember, shes been wearing a uniform to work every day for 26 years. Thats a great story, thank you, doreen. This morning two families want the federal government to investigate how two 5yearolds ended up on the wrong flights. It happened last month on two jetblue flights. The boys were put on the wrong flights. Little Andy Martinez mercado was supposed to rand at new yorks jfk but ended up in boston. When his mother went to pick him up, she was handed a different little boy who had her sons passport. Translator i was given another boy, and they asked me, it was the first time, is this your son. I said this is not my son. Now, jetblue eventually got the kids to their right destinations and refunded the families the flight money. Colin kaepernick says he wont stand for the national quote, represents what its supposed to. And the rockets red glare now other players are kneeling with him. During the 49ers preseason game kaepernick and his teammate eric reed both refused to stand. Kaepernick is protesting how minorities are treated in this country but that he means no disrespect to the United States military. So i have the utmost respect for them and i think what i did was taken out of context and spun a different way. Seattle seahawks cornerback jeremy lane also sat during the National Anthem last night. 11 41 now. I want to talk to chuck with a little bit more on how things are shaping up. It seems like with every hour that passes, were getting a clearer picture of what it means for the folks that are choosing to stay this weekend and those that are trying to get out of town. Its all about where youre going. If youre planning to go the jersey shore all the way down to the outer banks of North Carolina, it is going to be tough sledding getting down to the beaches this weekend and tough dealing with the weather while youre there. Staying here at home this weekend wont be such a bad plan. The rest of today looks great. Plenty of sunshine now. Temperatures will be warming up into the upper 70s and lower 80s. Gradually well see more and more clouds come into our skies. Tropical storm warnings have been posted for the lower parts of the Chesapeake Bay and parts of the eastern shore, likely to be expanded farther up the coastline here with time. The beach impacts, beach erosion will be severe. This is going to be every bit as bad was any noreaster. Its going to be a long stretch of coastal erosion. Coastal flooding, worst threats will be periods of high tide. Rainfall at the beaches now 3 to 6 inches or more, and the winds onshore, a northeast onshore wind 35 to 50 miles an hour really from saturday noon time up through sunday night or early monday. So heavy rain and turning breezy to windy. Sunday, heavy rain and strong winds. Monday still showery but quite windy. Winds could be near 40 miles an hour on monday as well, even as the bulk of the heavy rain pulls out. So theres the rain shield over parts of the lower bay. There could be a few showers around the metro area tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. Nothing all that heavy. But with breezy conditions, it will be kind of a squally weather outside and may rain fairly hard for a few minutes and be fairly windy as well. So it wont be necessarily a pretty weekend to be outside but it wont be hot. Once hermine decides to move out to sea sometime in the middle of next week, our temperatures will jump back into the 90s. Might even be near record highs for next weekend. Thank you, chuck. If youve been trying to transform your life, have we got the guy for you. Straight ahead, the one and only dr. Willie jolly. Its a joy to be here. Absolutely. You look like youre having fun up there. Im having a ball. Every time i get to do what i do, typically in my Corporate Program i sing one song at the end and that will be it, but were going to do Something Different to help people change theirs lives like i changed mine. Tell me a little background of what you do and how this got started. Im well known in the Washington Area as an inspirational motivational speaker. Im on right mr. Steve harvey every day. I have the number one show in america on sirius xm channel 141 for self help. And many know me as an inspirational guy. I started as a nightclub singer here in washington. The Television Programs here. I did a lot of jingles and i did a lot of the radio and Television Programs, but i made my living singing in nightclubs right here on wisconsin avenue. One time i built it into the number one night spot and the owner said i love you, people are packing in but were going to let you go. They said we want to get a better return on investment so we bought a karaoke machine, its cheaper. It wasnt personal. I said what about my bills . And i realize nobody cares about your bills except you and the people you owe. In that process i decided to change my life. 25 years later ive been named one of the top five speakers in the world, inducted into the speaker hall of fame. What did i do to do that . How many people want to change their lives . Yes, tell me about that. How do you start by changing your life . What is it that you pinpoint and say i dont necessarily like x, y or z, how do i make things better. The questions dream. If you ask most people what are your dreams and think about it for a second and people say okay, okay, my next question is are you living your dream now . If youre not, then why not and how can i help you to do that and thats what i do now. I help people live their dreams. Were going to tell people how i went from a broke, busted nightclub singer to becoming one of the top speakers in the world and not just talk about it. Im going to sing, im going to sing a little bit, well have some interaction and then im going to tell the secrets that ive learned and others can use to transform their lives, transform their futures and transform their finances. And finances are in there too, okay. Finances are in there there. So if you could give one key advice, what would you tell people that want to transform their lives . One key, the first thing is that you have to make up your mind. Believe it or not, that sounds so simple. Nothing is more powerful than a madeup mind. Most people, they dilly daly. But theres his dance, the chance to drawback. But the moment you make up your mind, then providence moves also and your life starts to change. I encourage people to make up their mind. Thats what im going to help them do. Then im going to help them dream and help them be inspired. The word inspiration is taken from the greek word to breathe anew. When you inspire somebody, you say its possible, yes, you can do this. Sometimes thats all you need. Somebody to tell you, you can do this. September the 10th at the lidner auditorium at the campus of George Washington at jollylivetour. I appreciate that. Well be right back. My son has meningitis b. But how did we end up here . His mom thought he had the flu and that he was covered by the meningococcal meningitis vaccine he had received. Until 2014 there were no vaccines for meningitis b in the u. S. Now there are. While uncommon, meningitis b can lead to death within 24 hours. Trumenba is a vaccine for 10 through 25 year olds to help prevent group b meningococcal disease. Trumenba should not be given if you had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose. Most common side effects were injectionsite pain, fatigue. Headache, muscle pain, and chills.
