Plus the security of your iphone, it may be at risk. The steps y welcome back. Researchers at Ohio State University say food waste is a serious problem in this country. The study they released reveals that americans waste about 80 billion pounds of food every year. Some of the problems may be with people not understanding food labels. Here to help us out with that is joy debow, a ph. D. And registered dietitian. Thanks for coming in today. Thanks for having me. Why do you think there is so much food waste . First off, i think theres a lot of confusion from shoppers whats the appropriate means to follow, use by, sell by, best by. 30 of the food produced in this country is wasted. Its actually the number one source of waste in our landfills. You mention those things. Lets run through what those things mean to help people understand. Use by, you see that on the packaging of whatever food youre buying. What does that mean . Basically what it means is f date could be compromised in flavor or quality. So it starts to deteriorate. Its not necessarily a safety issue, its more of a quality issue. And best by is . The same thing. You think best. Okay, quality of the food again, so theyre very interchangeable those two terms. And sometimes you see sell by. And thats more for the retailer. So when theyre swapping out their shelves and putting things back in, first in, first out, thats more for them to understand where they need to place the product on the shelves. Can they still sell it after that sell by date . Unfortunately they can. Thats why i would encourage everybody to make sure that before you purchase it, look at the label and say what does it specifically say. But why all these different labelings . Why not just say best by is what people need to put on their labels . Absolutely, it would clear up a lot of confusion and also drive down food waste. Thats actually been proposed with the Food Labeling act in may that coss take back up later this fall. I always wonder about things like im a single guy. Theres food that lives in my apartment for a very long time. I always figure as long as theres nothing growing on it, i can still eat it. Is there an eat by after youve prepared food or have pizza . Youve got to use common sense. Clearly keep things refrigerated that need to be refrigerated or in the freezer. Make sure the temperatures are proper for what that product is. Look at it, smell it. You may even have to taste it. Its going to tend to be more of a quality issue than a safety issue. But if you see something that doesnt look good like from a slime perspective and doesnt smell right, when in doubt, play it safe. Lets say you freeze something before you get to that use by or sell by date, how long can you keep something in the freezer before its no longer okay to use it . Again, its more of a quality issue. What freezers do is reduce the moisture and so the product is going microbes or anything that could make us sick dont tend to grow. So you can tend to get that freezer burn after taste that goes on and its more of a quality that you may just have to chip out. Theres no rule of thumb, just monitor it. Okay, thank you. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks, aaron. Right now a smoothie chain linked to 28 cases of hepatitis a is facing at least two lawsuits.
