That you financially and otherwise from these problems plays that deal with themes in real life presented each year at the source festival that opens tomorrow night at washington source theater. And this years subjects are so current they seem to be ripped from the headlines. Here to talk about the ninth Anniversary Season of the festival is its artistic director jenny frederick, welcome. Hi. Good to see you. This has been going on for nine years now, right . Right. This will be the ninth season. How did this get started . There was actually a festival in washington, d. C. For a long time called the washington theater festival produced by source theater company. When that company shut its doors, cultural d. C. , my Parent Company stepped in, purchased the building and decided to revive an idea of summer festival. We wanted plays that spoke to all kinds of people about all kinds of things and Good Opportunity to meet talent in washington. There are three different types of films plays. You had some very short. How long are they . Ten 18 tenminute plays, three full length and three artistic blind dates. So they are interdisciplinary collaborations, so artists of different variations, give them one of our themes and come up with whatever kind of project they can create a 20minute performance piece that speaks to each of their talents. Themes are always something kump current. Talk to me about themes for this year. We have three, heroes and home, secret and sound and dreams and discourse. So we meet in varied cities, we have a couple robbed at gunpoint. While they survived unscathed it poses a lot of questions for them about safety and security and how they can feel safe in their home and if they bring a gun into their home what does that mean to each of them. Its something i think is very relevant but we deal with it in a very human relatable way. This year in addition to gun rights as one of your themes youre also going to talkbo gender identity and transgender rights. Right. What did you do . Do you say to the play writes out there these are some of the things we want you to look at . Its the other way around. We put out call for plays and we see what players are writing about. Theyre on the front lines of what humanity is doing and whats happening in the world right now. So we look at what the play writes want to write about and we choose the plays we think are most compelling. So, yes, two couples both have a transgender partner. Who chooses the plays . My producing team theres five of us that make the final decisions, but we have a team of about 100 volunteer readers that help us read and score and evaluate all these plays and their input goes into the final decision. And how can we see these plays . Do you need tickets . You do need tickets, you can get them in advance at sourcefestival. Org. Or you can come to the box office any night. Box office opens an hour before show time. Whole calendar is online at sourcefestival. Org. And we run now through july 3rd. These tenminute plays you see only one a night . Its a whole kind of appetizer platter of short work. And you can see what play writes are writing about all over the country, discover new talent, a lot of people get their start in washington from this festival and go on and see them in much bigger stages all around the city. Its a wonderful place to launch a lot of good talent. A lot of amazing people. Ginny frederick, thank you so much. Thank you very much. Angie. Chuck, had me at appetizer drk oh, wait this is about theater. After the break, the reopening of a president ial museum this morning, also speaking of eating, a d. C. Rest vaunt seaur there aint no doubt i love this land a totally overhauled president ial Library Reopening right now. Youre looking at the ceremony from the gerald ford president ial museum. Very much so. Okay, so yesterday was pretty decent day. Yeah. But today i thought is it raining . Not yet. Not yet, its coming though. Theres always a but. Theres a little chance for some rain before the day is done, not everyones going to get rained on. So you dont have to push the panic button if you cant find your umbrella, but making plans for the outside this afternoon know Mother Nature may throw a quick little rain shower in your direction. Outside here this morning still plenty of sunshine coming down, bit of a breeze out there as well. Winds will be picking up for sure after a cool front goes on by tonight. Dry weather as you step out right now but quick moving rain showers are likeliest between about noon and 5 00 or 6 00 this afternoon into early this evening. A little breezy this afternoon and quite breezy tonight into tomorrow. All behind this is the cold front right here. That front is actually helping to keep all the moisture and the wind of what was Tropical Storm colin off the lower parts of the chesapeake bay. So the rain that we may see this afternoon will not be related to the tropical system. It will be because of a cold front comin nothing on radar for now. Heres future weather over the next little while. Showers expected to develop out across the blue ridge and the Shenandoah Valley. And i think it may be a little ahead of schedule here, this is estimating 12 45, i dont think there will be quite that much coverage at 12 45, but i think hit and miss waves of rain showers will be coming through as the front goes by. So just know that your rain chance stands about 30 to maybe 40 for the remainder of the day. But by 6 00, 7 00, 8 00 tonight all will be coming to an end. For temperatures were already in the low 80s around town. 82 in washington and arlington. 79 in la ray, 78 in martinsburg, west virginia. And temperatures hover in the low to mid 80s for the remainder of the afternoon. Clouds building around 1 00 and our best likelihood for showers here in the metro comes between about 3 00 and 5 00 p. M. Heres the way the next four days look. Ill show you the full sevenday before the show is over. 85 today, way cooler tomorrow. Only 75 for a high. And the next couple mornings all the suburbs will be well down into the the Shenandoah Valley by thursday morning. All right. Thank you, chuck. Nine children have died so far this year in hot car deaths. Since 1998 there have been 20 hot car deaths in virginia, 14 in maryland and one in d. C. In some cases the temperature doesnt have to be as hot as you might think for it to be deadly. Inside of cars heats up on average 19 degrees in as little as ten minutes. So we know that it doesnt have to be that hot outside for the inside of the car to get warm, warmer and then so hot that it is life threatening. Safe kids worldwide recommends putting your purse or phone or something valuable in the backseat so you do not forget that your child is back there. This is candy sushi. Its a fun treat for kids, pretty much anyone of all ages. I actually did it for an adult Birthday Party just because they wanted to. Its kind of fun. Super simple, take your little rollup that you have. And the secret is to put a little touch of just powdered sugar just so that it doesnt stick to your cutting board. Especially for the kids its so fun they get to use the machine, make it from scratch everything from the eggs and flour and then go home with the pasta machine, apr apron, the rolling pin, the whole thing. Professional chefs knives, we even have professional classes in our professional kitchen where they do master chef cooking. Its fun because they really get hands on. Is this more fun, tony, than working in a kitchen . Oh, yes, definitely. Different teaching different altogether. Finally is something that you know really pays back. That certainly looks good. It is. You have to try it. Okay, i will. You got to do it with the chop sticks. Angie, ill bring some over to you. You have to eat it with chopstic chopsticks . You have to dip the side its a Million Dollar bite. Back to you, angie. Oh, thank you, barbara. Nice chopstick skills there. Sticky. Its too much fun on this show. Well, right now lets get another check of the weather. Chuck, it still looks pretty nice out there. It is very nice outside. The one lonesome rain shower for now is just up here near hancock along u. S. 40. This is going to be drifting slowly down to the east though folks on the north side of martinsburg may get a little rain shower in the next 20 or 30 minutes. This is not severe. No thunder or lightning with it just yet. When i say its the first thing to bubble up, theres the rest of storm team 4 radar. Hardly anything out there now. Those showers will fill in a bit if youre making plans to be outside today, plan on a 30 chance of a passing shower. Were not going to warm up too much more. Were in the low to mid 80s now. Well hover mid 80s until the rain showers move in and cool back into the 70s. Well stay in the 70s all day tomorrow. 70s again on thursday and friday. So a nice little break from the heat and the humidity around here. Though we havent even had our first 90 degree day yet so i hate to call it heat. Nonetheless plenty of humidity out there for now. The next couple days really nice and cool especially in the mornings. These low temperatures here are downtown temperatures but most of the suburbs will be 50s tomorrow morning, low 50s in the suburbs thursday morning, could even see some 40s in the Shenandoah Valley. Turning warmer and a bit more humid into the weekend. Still watching out for a chance for a shower probably late in the day on saturday. So no weekend washout in sight, at least not yet. All right. Thank you, chuck. Well, that is going to do it for news 4 midday. We thank you so much for joining us. Were back on the air this afternoon starting at 4 00. And remember you can get your news and any time with the nbc washington app. We hope youll have great day. A dont you just love it announcer today on the mere dith vier voir show.
