Uses from the station. What is the governor saying about metro . Reporter he just signed an executive director where hes threatening to withhold governor, you did this live, i can tell you social media is blowing up with this threat to withhold funding from metro. Tell us what your aim is here. First of all executive directive i signed today saying my head of my Rail Authority are to meet, i want to come up with protocols of Safety Measures to make sure were doing everything we can to keep this system safe. And if they dont do it, theyre going to face the consequences. I have had it. I am sick and tired of waiting. I do think paul, the new general manager is doing a great job, i support him. Safety was my top issue, but i cant take so many people contacting me saying they dont want to get on metro anymore. Theyre going to work from home. It doesnt get you where you want on time. Im concerned about my safety. This is a huge economic driver for the commonwealth of virginia. We are taking this very seriously. The three jurisdictions are coming together legislation done, but we cant do it until next january because thats when the legislature comes back. So im taking action today. I want these safety issues done. I want it in compliance. And i want to make sure every virginia resident knows when they get on that system its a safe system. Reporter resisting compliance that the state of virginia will put in place or the tristate Metro Commission maryland and d. C. Will put in place . My directive for today is for virginia. And we have to get in accordance and what we think are the important safety issues. The three jurisdictions will come together in january. And weve agreed on that language. And well all pass it through our respective i cant do it until january until they come back, but i cant wait until january. Im just not going to sit here for eight more months and worry about safety. Reporter my question youre threatening to withhold money when Board Director saying d. C. , maryland and virginia going to have to come up with a billion extra dollars for metro possibly raising taxes. Where do you stand on a possible tax increase to fund metro . Im a big fan of jack a as chair and huge fan of paul and the great work theyre doing. Theyre making great steps. We wasted a year of trying to get a general manager. Im still unhappy about that. Well all get together but dont come to me asking for more money until i and the virginia residents know the money is being spent smart now. Dont ask for more money until we know the system is safe. People are not getting on metro anymore and that effects our economy. Weve got to fix it. We need action. We want results. We can do this working with jack and paul were going to work with them very closely. We all have the same goal in mind. They want to be able to get on the metro, the time its posted and get to their destination when theyre supposed to get there. And they need to do it in a safe manner. Today those are all in jeopardy. There you have it from Virginia GovernorTerry Mccauliffe threatening to withhold funding from metro. Thank you, mark. An investigation by the news 4 iteam found congress itself isnt following the federal government standards for providing accommodations to parents. Mom is expecting, shae miller is a 13year congressional staffer and still remembers what it was like making the long walk from her car to the office when she was pregnant with shaw. I think about when i was pregnant the first time coming, parking in the garage and then literally 15 minutes of waddling to my office. Reporter from your spot . From my spot to my office. Reporter thats because there are no designated parking spots in the capitol hill complex for expected moms. In a report issued in midmay a u. S. House subcommittee made would support efforts to provide temporary parking for pregnant women, even though the federal government doesnt require such parking at federal buildings. Something else in this report caught the attention of the news 4 iteam as well since the subcommittee also thinks its priority for the capitol complex to add more baby changing stations inside the dozens and dozens of restrooms on the campus. That could be an even bigger problem because congress is so short on changing tables and family restrooms it fails to meet the governments own standards for federal buildings. And it doesnt even have to because it exempted itself from the rules. In newer government facilities feds require one changing table on every floor. Those in the more modern Capitol Visitors Center we found nine changing tables in all of the u. S. House, less than half those required. Thats an easy fix, and we should absolutely do it. Reporter jackie spear is a longtime u. S. House member from california and a former staffer. Theres a bigger issue here. This is not a found congress doesnt meet the federal government standards for lactation stations for moms. That standard requires six stations for every 1,000 female workers with an estimated 7,000 female employees in congress that would require about 42 stations. The iteams review found there are only 12. And even those are relatively new. Before 2007 there were none in the u. S. House. Congress has made the rules apply to everyone else in federal service but to themselves. It is truly hypocritical. Reporter congressional officials tell the iteam another halfdozen lactation stations will soon open in the longworth building, but there are no announced plans to add any more family restrooms. Would current staffers bring their children in and use the changing tables . Maybe not because they are so busy. Reporter a former house staffer, now mom of three children, says upgrades would help Congress Keep its best and brightest from leaving government service. When you see the changing tables, it does sen a that, hey, this is a Family Friendly place to work. Reporter it communicates something. Sure. Why some say there is a eairitual m morning noon or night theres always a moment to discover visit annapolis and create your moment i was a believer you could say in the labyrinth in how it can help our body and mind. Some might call it complicated and confusing, others see as a calming and con t its been observed and walked for people for centuries around the world. These are some of the modder e iterations. Joining us to what led her on this project you have made an interesting study of people who have found the labyrinth something of a godsend for Different Reasons. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. It is interesting and we are labyrinths featured in places i had never noticed them before. Maybe you can tell us what led you to do this film. Right. Well, as a filmmaker i have produced a number of documentaries featuring d. C. Area people, places and issues. So ive always been interested in the area where ive lived much of my life. I learned about the labyrinth through an organization i belong to called women in film and video. Somebody mentioned they were looking on advice how to shoot an aerial shot of a labyrinth in maryland, i thought that sounded interesting. You got quite a few. So i started looking up labyrinth and i found that theres a worldwide labyrinth locater on the web and i started to look at what labyrinths were here in the d. C. Metropolitan area. I would describe it as a maze for meditation where you walk around and get into yourself and meditate perhaps. How would you describe it . Well, a labyrinth is different a labyrinth has a single path that leads to the center and then back out again. So theres no way you can get lost on a labyrinth. You follow that path. Whereas a maze has several different pathways and it has dead ends. And you can get lost in a maze. And thats why people love to walk labyrinths because they dont really have to think about where theyre going. They follow the path. Now, youve said you dont think its religious, but its spiritual. Tell us a little bit about the people you interviewed and why they use the labyrinth . People use it both for religious purposes and also people who dont have a religion use it also as a spiritual and meditative tool. What i wanted to do was show a variety of labyrinths each unique in their setting and the individuals that it serves. Some of the people that you will see in the documentary are an iraq war veteran who sustained traumatic brain injuries during the war. He was treated at the National Intrepid Center of excellence, which is at walter reed which treats Service Members who suffer from posttraumatic stressis brain injury. And he use the labyrinth there as a form of healing. A lot of Different Reasons for it. Yeah. The National Cathedral is spotlighted in your film. Yes. Lets take a look and listen to what they say. Our mission is to be a spiritual home for the nation. And a labyrinth is really meditation practice that anyone can enter and engage with and find meaning in. Now, your film is going to premiere soon, tell us about that. Yes, im very excited. The film will premiere on tuesday may 31st a 00st at 7 30. At washington National Cathedral. And its free and open to the public. And there will be a labyrinth walk prior to the 7 30 p. M. Screening at 6 30 p. M. Its part of the cathedrals monthly labyrinth walk open to the public. So better get there early, huh . Thats right. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you for having me. Looking for a labyrinth to go and walk. Wonderful. Thank you. All right.
