Live in baltimore. Reporter this is very much an active scene here in the penn north area. You can see the police have reestablished a line here. This was open to morning traffic throughout the morning. But you can see a large number of people have also gathered in this area. Well move around to show the large crowd. A lot of media obviously here. A lot of people who came out to clean up are here as well with brooms and trash bags. Theyve done a really great job of cleaning up this particular intersection. And then there are people who have just come out to observe, to see exactly whats going on and to take in the scene that is much calmer than the scene that we saw in this area yesterday. As a matter of fact let me show you some video of what we saw here outside the cvs store. Obviously we saw the looting that happened here yesterday. We saw the fire that came after that looting. And then today, we saw a much calmer picture, as i said obviously the burnedout store. But even now, there are people who are going inside the store not to take from it but to try to do more of the cleanup work. We talked to one woman early this morning who got up out of her bed very early and says she knew freddie gray. And she wanted to get out here to help clean up today. Take a listen. Theyre destroying the neighborhood. Stop the violence, please we dont need this yall are breaking and destroying and taking stuff. Its not right people worked hard for that money. Reporter the woman you just heard from, they call her miss mary. She worked inside the cvs store. Been working there for more than 15 years, were told. And obviously very emotional not only to what happened to her place of employment but what is happening in her community. This all coming after the funeral that was held for freddie gray that was held yesterday afternoon and a lot of the violence that we saw came after the funeral. Obviously freddie gray the young man, 25 years old, arrested by Baltimore Police a couple of weeks ago. While in custody, seems his spine was partially severed and he died a short time after that incident. Let me give you an idea of what the response to some of the violence has been in the last just under 24 hours from the government. Right now, governor larry hogan is actually having a meeting with faith and Community Leaders at the office that he has set up here in baltimore. Hes moved up from annapolis to baltimore to be a part of the effort to oversee whats going on here. The governor did issue a state of emergency. That remains in effect right now. The National Guard already here in a big way. A large presence from members of the army National Guard and the airmen as well from the National Guard. The governor has promised a massive Law Enforcement presence tonight. A citywide curfew will go into effect at 10 00 p. M. No one on the streets unless they need medical help or are going to and from work. One of the impacted spots yesterday by some of the violence was a Senior Center that was part of a church that was under construction. Darcy spencer has been following that part of our story. Darcy . Reporter good morning, aaron. Some of the damage that was caused yesterday cannot be cleaned up with a broom and a trash bag. Take a look here. This is the church bus. It was torched. Take a look across the street. Thats the Community Center that weve been talking about that was torcday. This is all thats left. This is something thats going to take years and years and years to try to rebuild. This is not going to be a quick fix. Lets go to some video shot by the chopper early this morning. This is the mary marvin transformation center. It caught fire about 9 00 last night in the midst of all the rioting and looting that was taking place. This was a massive threealarm blaze. I took a lot of firefighters to get over here and get this thing under control. But you can see it is a total loss. Lets go to some of that fire video. It was just a massive blaze. This was a Community Center. They were also going to have about 60 Apartment Units for Senior Citizens here. This is something thats so needed in this community. It took them a long time to get this project off the ground. It was almost finished and now its gone. Lets listen to one neighbor in the community. She says she is heartbroken. We are very upset of what happened because its not only i but my family is upset. It could have been my grandmother who needed to live somewhere. It could have been your grandmother. Reporter so as you can tell people here are very, very upset about the destruction. People understand. Others wanting to protest and exercise their rights but they dont have the right to do this kind of damage. Coming up in our next half hour youre going to hear from a pastor from a church in Prince Georges County who came here today to offer his support to this community. Megan mcgrath is live outside the court with what happened today. Megan, good morning. Reporter good morning. Its a case that could make samesex marriage legal across the country. And outside of the Supreme Court, we are hearing some passionate opinions on the subject. Outside the Supreme Court, a clash of beliefs. A clash of ideas, at times heated. For some samesex marriage is a question of civil rights and equal protection under the law. Number one as a lesbian, im personally impacted by this. But as a person whos fought for equality for all members of society, so people with disabilities religious people, women, minorities. Reporter but samesex marriage undermines traditional family values. For me its all about the gospel of jesus christ. So we cant really decide what to take or not take in that holy word what pages to rip out or to keep in. Reporter its a landmark case that could legalize samesex marriage across the country. The justices must decide if gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry. Must states issue marriage licenses to all and states that do not allow samesex marriage would they have to recognize gay marriages performed in states where it is legal . Reporter with baltimore engulfed in historic riot the citys mayor and Police Departments are accused by some of losing control of the streets. Ive been in contact with our governor and i have requested and he has agreed to deploy the National Guard. Reporter monday Maryland Governor larry hogan seemed to suggest the mayors request came a bit late. When the mayor called me which quite frankly we were glad that she finally did, instantly we signed the executive order. Reporter mayor stephanie rawlingsblake grew up in baltimore. Shes been under fire for these comments when she meant to say the police were trying to give protesters space. We also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. I never said nor would i ever say that we are giving people space to destroy our city. My words should not be twisted. Reporter also under fire, the Police Department. How did the situation get so out of control . Stepping into the firing line a group of religious leaders, christian and muslim who joined hands to drive the crowd back. Reporter today, there may be thousands of Police Officers coming into baltimore from across all of maryland in addition to pennsylvania and the National Guard. Now, coming into baltimore for the First Time Since 1968. So the hope is that today theyre able to get a handle on this. There are certainly elements in west baltimore that are not interested in picking up the pieces. They are interested in burning and burning and burning. The question is going to be whether police can get a handle on this today and make sure that west baltimore remains secure. Its going to be a very, very challenging day. Back to you. Reporter thank you. Live at what was the epicenter of some of yesterdays activity the intersection of pennsylvania and north. A very busy crowd has gathered here. You can see whats going on here. Theres a gentleman with a megaphone standing in the middle of the intersection. I dont know that his message is related to what has been going on here in baltimore. But hes taking advantage of the opportunity to speak to a large gathering of people. A lot of these folks coming here to sort of see whats going on. A lot of them are here trying to clean up as well. Were told that not only the cvs was looted and damaged yesterday but in this area a lot of Liquor Stores were also looted. A lot of those businesses around here were hit. Across the street from the cvs, there is a library, untouched in yesterdays violence. It is open today as are the rec centers here in baltimore for all the students not in school today. They say they are open for them. We just saw another Armored Vehicle come in along with a bus filled with officers in riot gear. And so this is still an active scene. You can imagine that Law Enforcement here wants to make sure they get complete control of the situation as best they can before any potential violence could happen. We should n the Baltimore Sun is reporting there were rumors on social media about another they called it a purge incident like what we saw yesterday basically here happening in baltimore county. Law enforcement in that county aware of those rumors. And at this point, weve yet to see any more violence start here in baltimore. Barbara . We will continue to follow the story. Were getting a better idea of the damage done by the riots in baltimore. The Mayors Office released these numbers this morning. They say there were 144 vehicle fires, 15 structure fires and nearly 200 arrests during the unrest last night and yesterday afternoon. Aaron, bring us up to speed with whats happening now. Reporter barbara, we are still here at what was a very busy intersection yesterday. The cvs, it was looted and burned. Now this morning, were seeing a growing number of people here at this intersection as well as this truck goes through our shot. You can see a large group of people gathered around something. We can tell you a busload of Law Enforcement the buses from arredondo county theyve just been unloaded here. I would have to imagine that that probably is just because of numbers. The number of people has grown here significantly. And the number of Police Officers who were here was really low up until a couple of minutes ago. Theres also a Baltimore City Police Department helicopter flying over the area. Weve seen the Salvation Army show up to hand out water. Lots of folks with trash bags still dispersing from this area to do cleanup. There are even people out here with Voter Registration forms trying to get people to register to vote while theyre here. Some of them just sort of onlookers. Theyre filling out Voter Registration applications. Also whats going on governmentwise, Governor Hogan meeting with faith and Community Leaders right now. We expect to hear from him around noon today. The governor issued that state of emergency for the city yesterday. It remains in effect. The National Guard is on the ground. They arrived here in bigger numbers a short time ago, the governor promising a heavy Police Presence tonight to keep the peace, to avoid a repeat of what happened yesterday and citywide curfew goes into effect tonight at 10 00 until 5 00 tomorrow morning. Christian leaders joining the nation of islam and gangs to try to help stop some of the violence here to prevent the violence from happening today. A pastor jamal bryant, gave the eulogy at freddie grays funeral yesterday. Last night, pastors met with gang leaders so that we can start rebuilding our community and give some safe haven. To burn down a c burn down a Senior Center Community Center does not reflect the legacy of freddie gray or the movement that weve been a part of over the last week. Reporter bryant says the looters had taken the Baltimore Police department the wrong way and things have gotten out of control here. And that is what really people are trying to prevent from happening today, another loss of control here in west baltimore or in any parts of the city. Although there is still a scene of devastation and destruction here. Nbc 4s Darcy Spencer is across town for us outside a Senior Center that was under construction and burned to the ground yesterday. Darcy . Reporter good morning, aaron. Some of this damage has left people heartbroken. Its left some people downright sickened. If you take a look behind me, this is whats left of the church bus. Its nothing but a burnedout shell. If you go across the street this is the Community Center that weve been talking about. Off in the distance you can see it still smoldering. For a while, weve seen that white smoke billowing out of there. People have been coming here to take a look at whats happening. This was an important project in this neighborhood. Lets go to video we shot at the height of the fire which started at 9 00 last night. This was to be the mary harvin transformation center. It was almost finished, the construction here. It took a long time to get the funding for this kind of project. It was associated with the Southern Baptist church. There was supposed to be like 60 units for Senior Citizens and have a place for seniors to go. And now its gone. And its hard to say when if ever theyll be able to get the money to be able to rebuild. I did speak to a pastor of a church in Prince Georges County who said he came here today to show his support. When many churches and pastors could have left this community, this church decided to stay and really to reinvest in this community. Its disheartening to see the commitment to justice be distracted and for this devastation to happen. Reporter so just utter devastation. No other way to say it here. I spoke to a man who knows the pastor who has vowed to rebuild. But its going to take a lot. We dont know if they have insurance on this property or not. But, again, it takes a lot of effort a lot of grants and Community Involvement to get this kind of project off the ground and now its gone. Aaron, back to you. Reporter Darcy Spencer live for us across town here in baltimore. We should note too, that more people are still coming to this area and then spreading out, fanning out to try to clean up some of the damage that was done here. We just saw a group of coppin state students come through the area to join in on that effort. Theres more on my Facebook Page about this. Back to you. Reporter jane and april are sued for the right to adopt each others kids after a nearmiss accident made jane realize she would not be allowed to raise aprils daughter. She loses me and her brothers and thats what really scared us the most was that possibility that they could be ripped apart. Reporter opponents argue its a question for each state to decide. The Supreme Court justices have no greater insight on to how to answer that question than you or i have. Reporter and now were getting some insight from inside the courtroom what those justices are thinking. From what were hearing, they are asking a lot of questions, skeptical of why the law should be changed. Live outside the Supreme Court, tracie potts, back to you. Thank you. Lets check our forecast. Bright sunshine everywhere now. Temperatures made it into the low 60s around the metro area. 63 in frederick, maryland. Hour by hour, temperatures climbing up to near 70 degrees. Plenty of sunshine. Reporter Maryland Governor larry hogan making it very clear during a News Conference earlier that there will be an increased Police Presence on the streets of baltimore today as Law Enforcement tries to prevent a repeat of the violence that really ravaged parts of this city yesterday. Back here live at the cvs, we can tell you that we just heard from cvs at the corporate level telling us all the stores here in the city of baltimore will close at 7 00 tonight because of the violence that happened at the store were standing in front of and some others apparently in the city yesterday. And we should show you some of the good efforts of plenty of people who are from the Baltimore Area not just from the city dozens if not more neighbors took to the streets to clean up after yesterdays riot. One woman i spoke to felt obligated to help out here saying her neighborhood had been destroyed. The store she went to for medicine she needed, now a pile of rubble inside. Theres a social media push to get people to help in the cleanup effort. There were calls on facebook and twitter to meet in different places. I can tell you weve been watching as the crowd has been growing. You can see on this flatbed truck one of the burnedout cars from yesterday. A new line has been established by Police Officers a longer line bigger line if you will by some of the officers who just arrived on the scene within the last 45 minutes here.
