It will be different from his fathers and brother policies . A big task and havent heard a lot of what would be different on the domestic policy. People want to Pay Attention to the speech today what he has to say on Foreign Policy so far havent heard much whats going to be different. Thank you. If youre taking medication for depression and not noticing improvements there may be another treatment option. Dr. Joshua weiner is here with a look at tms therapy. Hello. Good to see you. I want to hear all about it and if youve heard of it how does it work . So one of the problems with antidepressant pled kagss is that they dont work for everybody. So about 30 to 40 of people will not go into remission, meaning a cure of depression. We really have been trying hard to find out what we can do for some of these people. And one treatment option thats been fda approved since 2008 is transcranial magnetic system lace. This is a noninvasive procedure getting an electromagnetic current delivered to the front part of the left sides of your fraerd forehead stimulating the front part of your brain called the frontal lobe. That contend up having an antidepressant effect for people who have not responded to medications. How effective has it turned out to be . Not a slam dunk. I dont want people to think this is a cureall but we have found in studies that about 20 to 50 of people will notice a moderate to significant improvement in their depression. How does it compare an effectiveness to medication . Antidepressant medication is still considered the first line treatment for somebody with depression. If youre going to go that route. Therapy is also an option for people. Bupt the sprob, theres this subset of people not responding to the medications, and for smoob hasnt responded to a first antidepressant medication theyre likelihood of success with each successive antidepressant medication goes down. As opposed to with this, where actually if were you to compare it, people would be more likely to ben fritefit from tms than an antidepressant trial. Sounds scary. Putting an electrode on your head and stimulating it. What does it look like. Sit in what looks like a dental chair. A probe applied right here and getting this little woodpecker like tapping on your scalp and it occurs about four seconds, then a break of 26 seconds and the whole procedure lasts about 35 to 40 minutes. The thing is you have to go every day monday through friday for about six weeks. So this is not something that works right away. It takes a little bit of time before people will respond. And is there a time after that sixweek period still waiting to see if it works . In case people start to respond towards the tail end and the treatment needs extended. For some he respond, some go back for booster sessions. Is it does it have side effects . The most common is headache or scalp tender flz. In general, mild and relatively easy to treat. And tell me how expensive is it jand will insurance pay for it. . This is one of the problem oos see when trying to get this spore some of my patients in my practice. A lot of insurance doss not cover this. You have to really fight to get it in some cases. And if youre paying out of pocket for this its roughly 12,000. For the treatment. So this is not an option for a lot of people if theyre insurance isnt covering it. But it is approved by a federal by the fda. Its fda approved just because its approved doesnt mean the Insurance Company wants you to go in that trekz, arguing you hes in to try more medications. If you fail numerous trials maybe then consider it. Do you have patients thanking you for sending them in that direction . Only three patients go that direction, and so far i havent been blown away by the results, but i want people to know the study show its something to look into and because it hasnt work ford my three patients doesnt mean it wont work for them t.
