Thats the latest from the live desk, barbara. Right now nearly 50 african heads of state are in washington for an unprecedented summit. Coming up, the politics behind the event. And the road closures in the district slowing down your commute because of it. Plus gas prices at a fouryear low. The only thing to keep them from new developments this morning in the israel gaza conflict. Right now the temporary sevenhour humanitarian truce is over. The ceasefire ended about an hour ago, although both sides accuse the other of violating the truce. Israel reportedly fired rockets into the gaza strip and hamas militants reportedly attacked an israeli bus in jerusalem. Since the fighting began on july 8th, more than 1800 palestinians and nearly 70 israelis have died. Lets check in again with Richard Jordan with Something Else at the live desk. Barbara, here in washington the u. S. Africa Leader summit is under way. One of the first people to speak was secretary of state john kerry. He talked about the important relationship between african countries and the u. S. Listen in. Africa is a new center of global growth. Since 2000, banking assets have more than doubled. The Telecommunications Market has doubled since 2004 alone. And we know that africa will have a larger workforce than india or china by 2040. Kerry went on to specifically talk about south africa and how that region is exporting engines to the ford motor company. That in turn, he says, has helped to create at least 800 new jobs in the kansas city area. Now here at the summit we have leaders from all across africa. The president s of sierra leone and liberia are not attending because theyre dealing with the Ebola Outbreak in their respective countries and to address the concern of ebola spreading here in the u. S. , president obama said anyone coming from an area where ebola is prevalent, where there has been that crisis that is under way now, they are being screened at their home airports before flying here to the u. S. All right, richard, thank you. Right now roads are closed all over d. C. For the summit. You may also see motorcades drivi around the main areas to avoid, the Mandarin Oriental hotel on main avenue southwest, the world bank building, the National Academy of sciences and of course the white house. For a list of all the closures, head to nbcwashington. Com. And for more on the summit, were joined by mark murray, nbcs senior political activity. Good morning, barbara. A lot of activity. Absolutely. Can you tell people who the purpose of the summit is . I think its just to bring attention to the continent of africa. So much focus has been on the middle east recently or even when it comes to asia, europe, of course the United States and the Obama Administration wanted to make that pivot to asia, but i think the administration wants to show africa is important too economically as well as on the security level. There have been outbreaks of terrorist groups in that continent and then of course it all comes with the outbreak of the ebola virus in western africa. Of course thats just a minor part but certainly a story were following here in the United States. Thats probably one of the main issues discussed. Anything else . We heard secretary of state john kerry mention this, a lot about the economy and really the untapped economic potential of africa. Congress left on friday. Not all, but most of them have gone home, i guess. President obama was left to deal with the flood of undocumented immigrants crossing the u. S. Into the u. S. From the mexican border. Why havent they done anything, congress that is, to send the president a bill . They just cant they fundamentally disagree. The house of representatives did end up passing legislation late on friday to provide some border relief. The issue there is that it was almost passed it was passed almost by republican votes and not one in which youre able to kind of reconcile anything or get democrats to come along with. The Democraticled Senate wasnt able to pass any legislation, that had to deal with a filibuster. You need 60 votes for passage there. Given that situation, the president will have to take some executive action on getting things done. Whats really amazing here is that the request the president sent i 4 billion and got whittled down to 2 billion. To viewers that might sound like a lot of money but when it comes to the normal appropriations process, thats just a drop in the bucket. So what is the president likely to do on the Border Crossing situation . Well, i think that he might end up taking some actions on what kind of resources he can deploy. But the thing that people need to understand is that congress has the power of the purse. What the president can end up doing with executive action is mainly when it comes to who gets deport aned and not get deporte. Theres a lot of discretion the president gets. Two years ago the president said qualified folks under the dream act, those undocumented young folks who either are pursuing a College Degree or serving in the military wont get deported and can get a work permit and become a legal citizen. The question is does that get expanded to a broader universe of undocumented immigrants. I think thats what everyone is trying to find out. And what is the u. S. Position, have you looked at it on this whole issue . What do most americans feel about these undocumented people crossing the border . Overall this hasnt made anyone look very good. They havent been happy with how democrats and republicans and i think the public in the polling ive seen certainly there is a concern about the undocumented children who are coming across the border for humanitarian reasons but also is our border secure enough. I think the one thing that gets missed is that the Border Patrol is there. These children arent getting any farther than u. S. Border. Its not like theyre coming to washington, d. C. Theyre essentially turning themselves over at the border. But that is the issue and why its continuing to become so polarizing. But nothing will be done just yet. Not on the congressional level. For more from mark and the rest of the nbc news political team, check out first read on nbcnews. Com. President obama turning 53 today. Happy birthday, mr. President. He turns he gets back to the white house today and will be celebrating with a light schedule, ooewe understand. The president spent the weekend at camp david. Kim weeks from jim weeks yoga joins us to explain. Who did you bring with us today . Nandidy. Welcome back. Good to see you. You say we should be doing something to help ourselves inside and out. Yes. Vacation obviously is necessary for good health because it changes your sensory input, it changes your perspective, it changes your stressors that happen in normal daily life, but yoga offers sort of a vacation for the inside. Whether you do it on vacation or not. So we thought wed show some vacation yoga poses. Lets see them. We thought it would be really fun to unfold al here. My daughter, whose favorite color is pink, asked me to bring this on. Our little sort of blanket here. Shell sit down simulating being on the beach and heres a book. And so what shes going to do is just lean forward. Take the book toward your shins. And that if she just leans over and reads and relaxes. The most important thing to do in yoga is relax. So people at home, you guys will find yourselves relaxing more doing a pose like this and probably doing it even better because youre not stressed out about it, so why not try this. Are you relaxed down there like that . Okay. She says she is. Why dont you just take a nap. Maybe put your head on your shins. Is that too much stretch on your thigh . For some people it is. Cross your legs. And what if she sat like this and leans toward on her elbows and reads a book. You know how the beach chairs kind of have an angle down, you sit on an angle up and lean forward, you can still get some release for your spine. What does this do for you inside . Wassy talked about inside, stand up if you dont mind and well move on while i answer this. It relaxes your digestive organs, it relaxes your breath and your muscle tissue because youre relaxing that part of you, your back, your hamstrings and stuff that gets so tight and stressed out in daily life. I certainly like that idea. Its not so easy to sit up straight when youre sitting on the beach. Whats next . You know sometimes we have a nice relaxing night and we wake up. And the most important thing to do when you get up, no matter when youre on vacation or not is to stretch your spine because it actually shrinks when you sleep. So shes going to take her arms up and over her head. Why dont you grab one wrist and stretch. What if you got up out of your vacation kingsize bed or at the beach house or whatever and just stretch your side body. Shes pulling her wrist for one thing. Exactly. That pulls down into her this side of her spine, go the other way, and she stretches the other side of her spine. So youre more relaxed and more aware of how your body feels on vacation. So why not and stretch the body . Is this it . Quickly. Hurry, hurry, hurry. Imagine this is the pool at home. This is the pool. Shes leaning up, lifting over, what if you just tried to lift up like this, get a little strength and, boom, fall right into the pool. No harm, no foul. That does look pretty good and fairly easy. Have a happy vacation. Were so happy to see you again. Come back and visit us. And we have some new information about the governments decision on whether or not to allow cell phones to be used in airplanes. Youll want to hear this. Well, you want to stop what youre doing and take a look at the next story. After months of separation, a u. S. Marine and the dog that served with him are back together again. Take a look at this. Hi, how yactrol. Take a look at the texture of this dough. A lot of times mine gets too liquidy and flattens the cookie out. This is exactly what you want id to do. You want it to be nice and smooth. This was actually adapted from my Culinary School and we improved it to be a little bit more designed for what we would use in the restaurant. Better quality butter, vanilla beans, incredible chocolate chips. Its really something that you can replicate at home by making some adjustments like that. Wow, that looks fantastic. Whoa. How long do they cook . Butt these in the oven at 350, 375, bake them for four to six minutes, rotate it and another four minutes. Take them out and they are ready to roll. They sure do look good too. Can i take one . Go ahead, whats the other secret . While youre tasting one, please go ahead. What i wanted to say is you can actually scoop out tons of these cookies and put them in the freezer. Whatever you want to make that day, just pull out and throw respiratory ailment stay inside if you can. Later today in the upper 80s. This evening dropping back down into the upper 70s.
