Doctor, your Research Found there were 38,000 suicides, more deaths from suicide than car accidents, which is very surprising. Whats the major risk factors for suicide . Number one, being a man. So men are four times more likely to die from suicide than women, even though women are three times more likely to attempt suicide. So number one, being a male. Number two, having made a previous Suicide Attempt, that increases the likelihood that you are going to go on and successfully commit suicide. Although, whats interesting is that 90 of people who make a Suicide Attempt and who survive will go on to die from something else. They will not end up dying from suicide. So that really highlights one of the most important things i think we need to mention. Its an impulsive act. Theres a window within which you have to act and you have to prevent people from doing something that is potentially lethal. And the problem with guns is that guns are very lethal. 90 of people who use a gun when attempting suicide will end up dying. The majority of people who make other Suicide Attempts, either poisonings or jumping from tall heights, they end up surviving. So we have to look at guns. So if a person has a gun and they legitimately have a gun and its run in their family, whether its for sport or defending themselves, you think by having that gun in that house, that opens up the risk to using that gun on oneself . So guns so people who own guns are at no greater risk of making the Suicide Attempt. They are at no greater risk of having a mental illness. The problem is, the access to the gun is too easy if its in your house. If you become suicidal and have access to a gun you can say, i can do it now . I can do it now and youll end up using a very lethal means. Instead of having suicidal tendencies, you swallow pills and its much less likely to be lethal. Thats the problem with guns and suicide. Make su what do you t you feel like they are suicidal or what can be told to that someone to make sure that maybe they dont get that far . Well, what you want to do, first of all, is you dont want to be worried about suicide. So, doctor, be real with me. You know somebody that is about to commit suicide. Do you say to them, are you feeling like hurting yourself . I worry about you even possibly killing yourself . Do you go there . Absolutely. You come right out and say that, have you been having suicidal thoughts and then you ask, how much have you been thinking about this . Do you have a plan to do this . That shows that they have a greater intention of following through. You want to ask them about things like access to guns and want to make sure that if you really are worried about them doing something that they get help. Lastly, real quick, im getting the wrap. Where do you go to people for help . If youre at danger of committing suicide, you can always go to the emergency room. Someone can call 911. Obviously you can can call your primary care doctor, psychologist, suicide help line, there are lot of places that you can go. The most important thing is that people reach out and get other people involved so that that person then has other people looking out for them. Because the problem again with suicide, its an impulsive act and you want to make sure that youre not allowing that person the opportunity to follow through on their impulse. Bottom line, doctor, if you have a chance to stop it, you want to do anything and everything to stop it. Thank you for talking about a Martha Stewart back in court today. Youre watching news4 midday. Is it related at all to the piece that we all had to read in college . Its actually metamorphoses, plural. Youre right. I said metamorhisis. I think there are 11 volumes of poetry and it was staged in a pool of water. And thats where it actually happens in water. And youve got a big pool of water sitting on the stage . Yes. And everything happens there . There was a deck around the pool of water, so you have a little bit on the deck but for the most part, yeah. Its been described as a theatrical masterpiece. Seamless, visually gorgeous, language movements and water is the crucial theme. As well as being a director around the country, wanting to do a play in water. It was aquatic staging. Partially she did the show as a way to partition the set and it was called six myths. Thats right. It took on its own life and she then changed it a little bit more and it had its professional debut as metamorphoses. Who do you play . I play zeus as well as two kings as well as the god of sleep. So you have several roles . Yes. Everybody plays different roles in their different stories. And tell us about you. I play king midas and all sorts of little parts in the other myths. So is there a story . Is there an actual story or do we just go to watch this wonderful poetry in motion . Is there a story that you can tell us about . Theres not one particular story line that it follows but all of the stories, when taken together, all have to do with the transformative power of love and i think in the aggregate have a thematic message. So thats the message. It it does feel like it by the end. All right. Well thank you so much. Were so happy that you could come and tell us about it and get us all excited.
