The hearing was set for sparks but the hearing took a more even dramatic turn when former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was there. Giffords led off with a statement that lasted about one minute. Speaking is difficult, but i need to Say Something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. Too many children. We must do something. Giffords resigned from Congress Last january, one year after she was shot in theead at a Public Outreach meeting in tucson. She and her husband retired astronaut mark kelly have formed a Political Action group aimed at strengthening gun laws. On to the big story this morning. Traffic is still a mess thanks to a major crash on the beltway early this morning. This was from about 90 minutes ago. You can see cars slowly getting by on route 50 in lanham. It involved a fire truck and an suv and sent people to the hospital. Melissa malloy is live from the scene. What you can tell us . Reporter good morning, were on the eighth hour of this massive cleanup. Take a look behind me. You can see the inner loop sheer so snarled, people just coming through. The accident has been here since about 3 00 this morning. Right now in the distance, you can see theyre offloading food from the tractor trailer. They plan to right that within the hour. Traffic has just been a mess all morning. Take a look from above. The camera on top of our truck shows the tractor trailer slammed on its side, teetering on the concrete jersey wall. The fire truck smashed. It was a truck full of volunteer firefighters early this morning, returning from a call when a tractor trailer slams them from behind. It first pushes them several hundred yards then they flip, hitting an suv also on the inner loop. Seven people hurt, four of them the firefighters. This is one of the most severe ones ive seen with the fire truck traveling. The fire track is literally in pieces on both sides of the beltway. Reporter getting to this part of the accident is much more telling. You can see the fire truck almost completely crumpled almost splitting in the back. And the tractor trailer with its tires in the air. Take a look at this. On the back of this tow truck, you might not recognize it. That is a water tank that should be on the back of the fire truck. This is the top of the tractor trailer, the fiberglass roof shredded. And once you get to the front of the cab, you can see the rigs motor nearly ripped off. Aluminum ladders bent. Three of the firefighters back at the west lanham station this morning. Some stitched up, the fourth transferred to baltimore for surgery at a hospital that deals with limb injuries. A crew from here plans to head there for a later visit today. Backups for miles, traffic snaking oh so slowly for much of the morning. All of the injured are expected to survive. Pretty incredible when you look at all of this. Were very thankful. Very thankful. Every day we get up and come to work our lives are in jeopardy. And each day we go home to our families, its a blessing. Reporter now, the most injured firefighter weve been speaking of this morning is in surgery in baltimore. His family is also with him. State Police Investigating this crash. They say it could still be several hours before the road is fully open. Live in lanham, maryland, melissa malloy. Back to you. On the inner loop of the beltway, better here as well but still slow. Youre getting jammed around i95, as you make your way through college park and led to lawrence route 50 its not terrible. Let me give you your travel speed. It will take about 22 minutes to get from i95 heading towards route 50 in maryland. Well head over to aspen hill maryland. Temperatures that hit the 60s most of the region. Reagan national is at 62. Much of Prince Georges County upper 60s. Montgomery county, mid60s. Arlington and fairfax mid60s. Over most of virginia now. And also we have temperatures that are also continuing to hold steady in the 60s to near 70. And we have a severe thunderstorm watch in that area left of the screen. The areas in yellow and orange, those are areas where we have severe thunderstorm warnings. The watch, those areas in the darker color. Thats in effect until 4 00 p. M. That watch may be extended farther east. Now, all of these counties in green are under a Flash Flood Watch. That means we could get some brief very heavy downpours. Maybe pick up an inch to inch and a half of rain in a short amount of time. That may cause high amounts of water in washington, prince georges, arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties, north and west, for the threat of high waters with heavy downpours coming in later this afternoon. And we are following a developing story in alabama right now. Police are negotiating with a man who shot and killed a School Bus Driver and is now holding a young child hostage. Still working to piece together exactly what happened. Heres what we can tell you at this point, it all started in midland city, near georgia and florida. The borders of both of those. Police say the gunman walked on to the bus and shot the driver when he wouldnt let him leave with a child. They say the gunman then took the child to a storm shelter behind the church. Officers have been negotiating with the man all night. Well bring you any new developments that come into our newsroom. Later this afternoon, well learn how much time a former Culpepper Police officer will spend in prison. A jury found Daniel Harmon wright guilty of voluntary manslaughter yesterday. He shot and killed 54yearold Patricia Cook in a Church Parking lot. Harmon wright claimed cook tried to drive off with his carpal stuck in her car window. He faces up to 25 years behind bars. Also, the board will hold an emergency meeting to begin the removal process of executive don leopold. Leopold was found guilty of charges yesterday. He was charged with helped empty his catheter bag and putting up election signs in 2010. The judge will announce when leopold will be sentenced tomorrow. Monday, theyll hold a formal vote on whether to remove leopold out of office. Work is under way to bring a walmart to the district at the corner of riggs road and third street. It will include hundreds of apartments and house to of square feet of retail space. Tony tull is there with the work . Reporter its a plan thats been in the workforce the last couple years, but this morning, they officially broke the event still going on inside the tent. Take a look behind, you can see the construction site as you mentioned on the corner of ridge road here in northeast. Its going to have a walmart, thats going to be the Main Attraction but more specifically an urbanformat walmart. Take a look at the pictures. Urban format means the walmart is going to be on the bottom floor and also accompanied by retail spaces. Now on top of the retail spaces in the walmart they will also build about 335 apartments. So there will be residential houses as well. As for access, the metro riders can get here via the red, the yellow and green lines. They also talked about changes some of the roads and this intersection at the corner of third street and riggs road. We can catch up with Councilmember Mary bowser before the event. Its a huge transformation for this neighborhood. We started with an 8 million road project. Now were bringing retail and great Affordable Housing to a metro center. Shifting gears, Severe Weather in parts of the south has claimed the life of at least one person. A man in nashville died when a shed he was in crushed. Well, unfortunately, we may have scattered power outages, not as bad as the derecho last summer, but strong gusty winds that likely are coming in later this afternoon. It does look like things are accelerating and looked earlier than this morning. With the timing on that. First of all, lets take a look at the sky. Right now over washington, weve got a cloud cover. Theres the washington monument. 62 balmy degrees. Winds gusting at 30 miles an hour. Were going to have the blustery winds you there much of the afternoon. College park, 70 degrees. Camp springs 67 in Prince Georges County. Arlington and fairfax counties mid to upper 60s. Easily in the low 70s in the next couple of hours. Then the rains going to arrive farther west. In the mid60s in Shenandoah Valley and petersburg, west virginia, 72. By contrast, only 45 with fog in hagerstown. An amazing difference. Wind off the water in annapolis, too, at 55. All of areas in color have severe thunderstorm watch until 5 00 p. M. And as we do get these storms coming through, we could get some heavy downpours all these areas in green under a Flash Flood Watch. Beginning 3 00 this afternoon, all the way into tonight. Because when these thunderstorms do come through, they can unload lots of rain in a short amount of time that could cause high water quickly to rise in creeks and streams which may quickly flow out of their banks and cover roadways. Do not attempt to drive through high waters. Stay away from high water. We may have that in mont gumry, prince georges, all the areas in green. How much rain will we get . Through the afternoon, probably not much. Mid to early evening is where well get the heaviest rains from an inch to inch and a half to two inches in the lavender zone. The blue zone, a little less as it does move on through. Right now, no precipitation yet, but we are getting the leading edge of this squall line thats producing the damages winds just about to move into western maryland. Here is garrett county. Does look like it may be moving in there shortly. A big risk zone right in the middle of it covers all of virginia, all of maryland, all of west virginia. So what to expect . How do you start making the Caramel Popcorn . Its really simple, about 3 1 2 quarts of already popped popcorn. You can do microwave popcorn as well. The caramel sauce is two cups of brown sugar. Its a half a cup of corn syrup. If you dont want corn syrup you can use agave, not necessarily honey, but agave, if you dont want to use the syrup itself. Then half a pound of butter which is two sticks of butter. Mmmm. You want to bring it to a boil and stir it. This is th same thing in this pot you that got boiling . Absolutely. See how its thick and the colors going and you got bubbles. Do you want it to get really thick . You actually want it to get fairly thick. You want it to boil for five minutes. I use my kitchen timer. My mother used to say if the recipe calls for butter, double it. Is that right . You know what i love using butter. Once this is boiled for a good five minutes, you want to add a half teaspoon of baking soda. The cool thing about the baking soda, its going to start to react and get nice and foamy. You add about a half teaspoon baking soda and add vanilla. About a teaspoon. Thats more than a teaspoon. I usually add a tablespoon. Its going to change colors as you see it gets lighter and fluffier. Thats the baking soda in there. Its adding a lot of the acid is reacting with the sugars and things. It gets this beautiful foam. Can you tell us what you do next. Were running out of time. Absolutely. You pour it over your pop carn. You stir it in, you get it in the oven and you cook the popcorn for 35 minutes. At the earliest, two street cars are ready to go but d. C. Has them sitting in storage at metros green belt facility. People living in that area have one simple question, whats taking so long . Where are the street cars . Thats what id like to know, where are the street cars . Well, i was told they were going to put them up in 2012. They havent done it yet. Its 2013. Were stitt waiting. And now they say 2014. Were still waiting, whats the problem . The d. C. Officials say theres no problem with the street cars or the rails. Its just taking a lit more than expected sorting out details. Montgomery county police are looking at a string of breakins. A suspect attacked a 46yearold woman. Police believe hes responsible for at least nine other robberies in the past month. Theyve released this sketch of the suspect. Investigators say he was initially just going after purses and electronics but initially, he approached people on the street claiming to have a weapon. If you have any information, please contact Montgomery County police. Another man responsible for a robbery is behind bars. Police say this video shows him robs it and a bank. Late last night, an officer spotted a suspicious cab outside a nearby hair salon, found the suspect inside getting, listen to this, a haircut. In the corner of my eye, i saw a male sort of matching the description. Luckily, the wind blew in because i could see the door open. I called it in. Police say he confessed to both robberies and another r robbery last week. The Washington Post reports that leaders in Fairfax County want to fund renovations at Thomas Jefferson high school for science and technology by asking for contributions from neighboring counties. Loudon and Prince William counties do send students to that magnate school but are sure not to play for that proposed project. Sticking in virginia, some parents in virginia may have to change their child care routine soon. Fairfax county Officials Say theyre looking to change zoning permit rules for athome day cares. Current state law allows for up to 12 kids in home day cares. But county rules only allow for seven unless the provider had a special zoning permit. And the fee for that permit is more than 1,000. The county board of supervisors has presented a proposal to adjust zoning rules to allow for up to a dozen kids and lower that fee. The county will do everything that we can to make sure were keeping child care providers and that were making it easier for new child care providers to come through the system. I think were going to lose a lot of good day care providers because a lot of people will not want to go through this process. In the next few months, there will be public hearings to discuss the proposal. Meantime, some Top Republicans are already voicing concern with president obamas plan for immigration reform. The president laid out his plan yesterday in vegas. It calls for bolstering Border Security and cracking down on employers hiring undocumented workers. The president also wants to create a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in this country. Theyd have to pay back taxes and pass a background check among other requirements. Opponents to the plan worry that it doesnt do enough to beef up security at the border. They say millions of additional undocumented immigrants could be in this country in a few years without tighter security. Super bowl sunday is just around the corner and that means the big easy is boosting security throughout the city. The city of new orleans is adding 1300 federal agents and 270 extra state troopers. There will also be coast guard ships on the lower. River homeland secretary Janet Napolitano will hold a press conference with the nfl later today. Why is it sufficient a big topic as opposed in years past . Well, i think its a big topic because this condition affects so many kids. This condition affects anywhere om 5 to 8 of kids, in general. And then about 50 of those kids will go on to be adults who exhibit problems with adhd. Because it affects so many people, so many people are talking about it plus, i think people are concern because theres always stories coming out about this issue. And just i think a lot of people are skeptical of the diagnosis in general. So i think that leaves a lot of people to question what the hecks going on here. A lot of people are saying why cant parents do what i did when i was a kid or you were a kid, parents said go sit down and stay on that couch . And i think parents are trying to do that with kids with adhd, theyre trying to be good and exert good discipline and good behavior. But for somebody who is biologically driven to have difficulties with sitting still. These are kids even in the face of being september to the principals office, even in the face of not doing well in school, getting in trouble at home, they just cannot do what adults want them to do. Its just not possible for them to do it for any sustained period of time. They might be able to do it for 15 minutes or Something Like that, but eventually it all breaks down. One of the things i was talking with barbara with before the show. Her son went to a school here in the area where one of the mandates in the school, kid has to play some type of sport activity before classes started and the official School Regular m regiment started. Is there a connection with kids being able to focus more . There is. Theres good evidence that exercise does improve peoples attention. Thats one of the reasons with the cutbacks with schools, one of the first things to get cut is physed indication thats one of the reasons thats why that shouldnt be cut out. To get that energy out. And we know that Vigorous Energy for about a half hour improves your focus for like two hours. Its kind of like getting a small dose of adh medication. Owe what about diet .
