Got from thece chief, mpd police chief who covered the last couple of inaugurations. Which is preparing for an inauguration to preparing for a super bowl which is what she is doing now with her job with the nfl. She says i am watching. I remember what its like to be out there trying to keep the peace in all of that turmoil. Super bowl planning is intense but much better, she says. I dont miss seeing and dealing with the violence. Good luck to all of you. We wish kathy good luck at the super bowl because that is no easy task either. Amy is out there on the street. What are you and what are you seeing . This is by Franklin Square park and seeing a huge crowd of people to protest donald trump. A lot of people out here in full force. Police are out here in riot gear and they are formed a line th have been using pepper spray as they told me earlier. People here seem to have come prepared for that scenario and seeing a lot of people wearing gas masks and goggles and things like that. They did seem to become prepare for that situation. We also seen a trash bin set on fire earlier. Just a lot of things happening right now and this is at Franklin Square park at 13th and k. Amy, you got into a bit of a tough situation earlier today. Tell us about that. I did. Yes. We were actually corralled with the protesters earlier. This was the disrupt j 20 protest. They said they were anticapitalists and antifascist protesters. The police were in riot gear and corralled the people in together including the media. They were not letting anybody leave and asking the police when people would be allowed to leave. They would not respond and shake their head or ignore us were actually able to get out. Amy is a the youngest reporter on our staff and doing a terrific job. Amy, stay safe out there. Absolutely. Thank you, guys. Appreciate your work. We have been showing you scenes of conflict and turmoil the last hour. We just shot a shot a couple of minutes ago of a much quieter scene on pennsylvania avenue that is along the parade route, i think it was. It was one of the reviewing stands down there. We need to make a point all of that conflict and turmoil is quite a distance away from where the parade will get under way in a couple of minutes from now. It is a secure area. And word is to be taken both literally and figuratively, and the flash bang grenades and tear gas and several blocks north of that around l street and k street and quite a bit of where the parade itself will actually be going along. We would love to have an update what is is happening with the president and the luncheon at the capitol. Here we go. Thank you. Right on cue right just finishing up the luncheon so the next thing that happens is President Trump will review the troops outside of the capitol and then he and his family make their way by motorcade up pennsylvania avenue to their reviewing stand in front of the white house. After that, then the parade will get under way and we will continue. We are told its a smaller parade than in past years certainly than last year. But not that much smaller. Yesterday, there are nine fewer bands, which is not all that much shorter or smaller than it was in 2012 and in 2008. This has been a marvelous and momentous day and interesting day, if you will. A day where the best of america carries itself and demonstrates itself to the world that it will be peaceful and orderly transfer of power from one president to another. It went off without a hitch. It was a wonderful thing to behold, the old pre and hsident his wife and the new president shaking hands and chatting. Mr. And mrs. Trump standing and walking, as a matter of fact, mr. And mrs. Obama to the helicopter as they got on and made their way over to joint getting ready to get on an love to be doing and that is going out to Southern California to hang out for a couple of days. We had heard that former president obama, that sound funny to sary, doesnt it . Former president obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama might speak before they depart on on the vacation at joint andrew base but we have not heard or seen any of that yet. Ill tell you the scene stick to me the one i love with the president getting on the helicopter was fairly cool, but i think the one was the coolest of all was joe and mrs. Biden at Union Station getting on the amtrak and going back to delaware which he has been doing certainly for more than eight years because he was doing that even while he was serving in the senate. He goes home on the weekend and he gets on the train and takes the train up to il delaware, then goes home from there. He has been doing that for, i dont know, 12, 20 years . I dont know what its been but it was a wonderful shot to see them today standing there waiting like you and i and so many others have for their train to pull in. He is such a personable guy. Dont you know he probably knows in of the people on that train, the conductors and probably a lot of the other passengers on a first name base. If he didnt know them when he got on, he knows them when he get off exactly right. You can depend on that. They are wrapping up at statuary hall as noted. That luncheon that is customary there has been finished. I heard today someone on the radio, the menu and it was interesting and then i heard somebody say that the new president , doesnt the new president enjoy big macs or Something Like that . He eats a lot of junk hes the president now. Im recalling that because it makes me laugh when it was h. W. Bush. The one thing that was not allowed on the menu, broccoli. I remember him saying, i dont have to eat broccoli any more because im now the president of the United States mamma made me eat broccoli but im not eating broccoli any more. I think it was the first president bush. Im not sure. Memory fades. In the event the events of this day are not fading but moving on. I told they are behind. I think 20 minutes behind so by now it might well be considerably more than that but we just saw the president and mrs. Trump leaving that hall. We assume they are going out now to review the troops outside, former president bill clinton is there as well. Scott mcfar land is taking us back to the reality of the day as it presents itself up to 13th and k street northwest. Actually not protests. Disruptions continue. Scott . We actually shifted to Franklin Square, jim. A lot of people are moving in this direction so we move here too. I got to tell you im seeing a lot of the faces here that i saw during the peak of the unrest at 12th and l street and feel like a potential for this to kindle again. A bit of rain coming down now and might quiet things a bit but im seeing the same people circulating a potential this could stir up before the parade begins or as the parade begins. Let me set the scene. Franklin square is a bit of a gathering point for the groups to come down here to join the parade route protest this. I see Different Police rt manning this intersection. They are helping to contain people to keep them to a corridor versus gathering in the middle of the street which is what they did at the intersection of 12th and l street about an hour ago. U. S. Park police eagle 2 i believe is the overhead monitoring things. We have a bit of quiet compared to an hour ago. There is a potential for this to rekindle as the parade begins. The story in Franklin Square. Back to you. Scott macfarlane, thank you. We have a bit of quiet on the protest front i think we ought to bring charlie back in. Charlie, we so appreciate your sharing your years of expertise for us and we feel so honored you are good to join us today. In years past, right now, you would be at that reviewing stand waiting for the parade to come. Tell us first of all, how nice is it to be warm and dry exactly. What is happening down that way right now . Actually, what happens, we have a script and we go by the script. The president is where he is and they have the president ial reviewing stand. Now all of the guests and family will be going to the president ial reviewing stand. From my perspective, its a matter of what is happening first. Oh, incidentally can we hold you one second . Go ahead. We just found out interim police chief newsome is on the phone with us right now. Are you there . I am. Thank you, chief, for joining us. Tell us the situation now if you feel it is contained. What is going on now . Yeah. Its in a very small portion of well. Right there at 13th and k street. We had to line up some officers because i didnt know those officers, we have officers affecting an arrest from earlier in the day and so when they are in the process of doing that, we need to provide for their safety. They have to sometimes focus on the people they are placing under arrest. We want to make sure they dont get hurt in the process. You can see from some of the images coming from that location, we have maybe a couple of hundred people and then a small group within there as throwing rocks at the police. They set a fire at one point. But we believe that we got mostly under control. How many arrests and how many injuries . From earlier in the day, we had over 90 arrests. We think its in the neighborhood of about 95 arrests. This was a group who was running through the city dressed in all black. They had hammers. They were breaking out some of the they had damaged some cars. Our Police Department actually did an excellent job of being able to contain that group in a location and prevent them from creating further damage to our city. We want to make sure that you understand. This is video that youre looking at that was recorded earlier. Not what is happening right now. Chief, a problem some years ago with mass arrests in the city. em curious to know of the 95 or almost a hundred or whatever that have been arrested, how are you processing them now and how is it different than in the past . Well, you know, you got to be very careful and you make sure when youre making an arrest of large groups like that that, you know, everyone that youre arresting was involved in the destruction of property or the rioting which would be the charge. Or they are somehow contributing to it. We feel very comfortable that the ones that we have brought in to custody, that video and the other evidence that we have collected will bear that chief, we understand some of your officers were injured. Can you tell us about that . We did have a couple of officers that were injured. Thankfully it was not too serious and hopefully we can get them back on their feet really soon. Are you confident you got this under control and will continue . We do. We have it under control. We planned for this. Im sure you heard what we were talking about the weeks proceeding the inauguration is that we want folks to come here to peacefully air their grievances with the government fmts what they want to do. If you look around the rest of the city we have thousands of people who have done that and we also are prepared in the event that folks wanted to come here and break the law and we are going to make sure those folks are held accountable. We are looking at live pictures again. Now, chief, we are seeing some smoke, maybe some unclear what that is. It seems to be tear gas. Yeah. We have not deployed any tear gas to the et any smoke, that is something that perhaps the demonstrators brought. Interesting to know. The metropolitan Police Department has not deployed any tear gas. How much intel do you guys get ahead of time about what the disruptors, the protesters may be planning . We get some intelligence. Actually, we had quite a bit for this. But also some of the ones that are bound and determined to come here and create some problems or break the laws, they are very careful about how they communicate. They try to make sure that Law Enforcement is not aware. But we are well aware of that ahead of time. We prepared. We got plenty of resources to deal with this situation. The bad news for washington, d. C. Is you got some folks going to come back to work either tomorrow or the next day and they are going to have to clean up the mess and its really unfortunate that you have people with the mentality that think they can come here and destroy other peoples property. I think its our responsibility as a police folks are held accountable. Youre looking at tape shot earlier today. Chief, for clarity purpose, you say the police force has not used tear gas. What was that that was being sprayed earlier . We do have pepper spray but that does not come out in clouds of smoke. So anything that you saw that was smoke related, i dont know exactly what youre looking at right now, would not be something that was deployed by us. We do have the capability of using pepper spray but that does not create a smoke. Chief, thank you very much. We appreciate it, chief newsome. Thanks for having me on. Good to clarify that. Yeah. Its good to clarify that and every other thing that has been going on down there. We appreciate your time, chief. Thank you very much. These are live pictures youre looking at now. Is that 12th and k, jason . I believe that is what it is. Any way. It seems to me a situation Franklin Square. Franklin square. Fairly under control now. Get back to charlie. We were talking about what his situation has been for all of those years, for all of those naur inaugurations. What is that picture . This is basically pennsylvania avenue and the calmer and happier times. Id say. When they are talking about what we have here, its hillary and bill clinton going down, marching down pennsylvania avenue and it shows their second inauguration. It shows where the announcer would be. Im on the third level of the News Conference area. Yes. One of the things t yes. One of thehi ha found out over the years is that the parade is actually an extension of the president s personality. We got to hold it there. Come to me now scott, youre on the air. Action at 13th and k street. The police are pushing protesters back again and this is what we saw earlier at 1st and l street the people getting trampled or run over. Im in Franklin Square and you saw things rekindling a few minutes ago and they have. A group of protesters pushed toward the police line and give you a Better Vantage Point now. Jeff, why dont you go ahead and stay in on this. We saw mpd van speed backwards down k street toward 14th. And the crowd is reforming between 13th and k. We are seeing about a half block away from this for our own safety. People jumped atop of the bus stop. The bus stand. They are standing on top of the bus stand now. At i think police are going to try to stop this. Once more we are seeing some of the same faces we saw an hour ago from 12th and l street recongregate. We are feeling the Energy Reform here at 13th and k. We are getting closer to the parade route here. We are seeing movement on k street and often happens when there is a flash bang or some time of spray used and we see people climbing trees down here at Franklin Square. The elevated positions are of concern to the Law Enforcement and see what they do next. Keep an eye on this. The movement of people behind me this is new and this is reminiscent of the unrest we saw an hour ago. We will keep you posted. Scott mcfarlane isor live from 13th and k street Franklin Square area. You hear the reporters in the field and you can get sense of what the adrenaline flow is like in that situation. And you can understand, you know, why there are challenges for the Law Enforcement people. Because the adrenaline is rising for them as well in that situation. They need to be calm and not whip their heads that they are inclined to want to just leap out on. But they are professionals and they are doing the job so far as we expect them to do. We change the scene now and something much more serene and a lot calmer. The east front of the capitol where in a couple of minutes, the President Trump will come out and its called the review of the troops. It is a formal ceremonial activity following that review, t president and mrs. Trump will get into a car and they will make their way up pennsylvania avenue to the reviewing stand in front of the white house. We understand a little bit of rain falling out there now. You can see drizzle on the troops. Those are tough men and women and they can handle it. They are. The new president said he didnt care if it rained or shined today. He was fine. All of the women worrying about their hairdos, its a different story. The new president might be concerned about his hairdo as well you know . Maybe i shouldnt be a gender discriminating on that. No. Thats true. But this is what is happening right now. We are waiting for the new president to come out and review the troops and clearly that has we want to make the point that Scott Mcfarlane was talking about closer to the review. That is quite a distance away. Scott mcfarlane and that activity is around 13th and k. This activity is down on pennsylvania avenue and constitutional which is a good ways away. They are not subject to the kind of disruptions that are going on a bit north in the downtown area of the city. We are waiting for the president to come out now and to review those troops. We assume that he might be putting a rain coat on or getting under some umbrellas, whatever the case may be. Somebody will put the umbrella up for him hell review the troops and move on. Then the parade will will begin. May we make it clear that all of those involved in that parade grateful. This is the seventh inauguration that dorene and i have covered together. And in every single one of them, may i see have frozen our toes off charlie can attest. It has been cold out there on january 20th. Kim, youve been down there yourself and you can attest to that yourself. It has been miserable out there. We will not forget, i think it was 08, obamas first inauguration. Very cold. Absolutely miserable. And those of us around. Charlie, i know you can speak to this one. The one with president reagan. Absolutely. They had to cancel, right . The second one. Yep. The second inauguration for Ronald Reagan actually, i got a call at 11 00 at night saying, a pennsylvania avenue. What i found out was that the president kept his advisers at bay by saying we got to have something for these kid who have had fundraisers and they are telling all of their friend. We want that at least portion of the parade so these kids can tell their families and friend, i was in the Nations Capital and i was in the parade. Exactly. So what happened was all of the big bands had 500 people. They were too big to get in the capital center. Got you. And they asked me, charlie, dont bring the script along. It will be no good. I hope you can adlib everything right guy for that you did, didnt you . Yes, we did. It all went well. Those kid had some stories to tell when they got back to iowa and wherever else they came from. Positively. Youre right. Such an honor for everyone who gets to participate in the inaugural parade, isnt it . If i could make a quick comment. Sure. Please. President obama did something that nobody else has done. In the past, youve had celebrities and movie stars and just everything spectacular. President obama did the opposite. He wanted to get africanamerican elementary, junior high, High School Kids in the parade. They have never been invited before and you talk about something, the bragging rights, and themselves, they are so rt parade, even though they werent celebrities. The kids were thrilled and imagine the tlil of their parents and grandparents as well. Precisely. Exactly. I think the first time that africanamericans were allowed in the inaugural parade, if im not mistaken, 1868 or Something Like that. 1864. It was back in 1865. Second inauguration. Thank you very much. I got another one. Women didnt get to participate until 1917. I was surprised by that. I cant even reach mine. Its over here somewhere. They are lined up and ready and waiting and rain falling but nobody cares because this is a special day and a special folks. You got to appreciate the discipline and you have to appreciate also all of the time that all of these men and women have spent for this moment. There have been days and weeks and months of rehearsals for this particular moment. Coming out now of the capitol, the president and mrs. Trump, take my word for it. Is that the House Speaker . Senate majority leader . The president and mrs. Trump will be coming out of there. They will review the parade and then they will move on. Then they will step their way on out toward the reviewing stand. You talk about what an honor for the parade participants. These troops, this is the cream of the crop. You really got to be something to be selected to be there. We are going gonzalez. She is along that parade route with the theme she is seeing there. How is it going . Its cold but not as youve experienced in years past. The rain much more of a nuisance than a washout. We are close to the u. S. Navy memorial. Let me show you the Law Enforcement presence here along pennsylvania avenue. What we understood a coupled ago there were 3,000 extra Law Enforcement personnel here shifting d. C. Police today and those additional Law Enforcement personnel would not be here tomorrow when we are expecting mass crowds of protesters for the womens march. Again, some 3,000 Law Enforcement personnel. Along the parade anticipate being probably your first stop along the route here at the u. S. Navy memorial. About a half mile later, youll see pat collins and then maybe another half mile after that, youll see Chris Lawrence over by the reviewing stand. But this will be the scene where we see, for the first time, the president ial motorcade coming from the u. S. Capitol up pennsylvania avenue, toward the white house. Whether or not he and mrs. Trump will exit that vehicle, we still dont know. We did understand from the new president that he wanted this parade to be some 60, 90 minutes. He didnt want this to go any longer. We have seen previous parades go two hours. A little trivia for you. It was president carter was the first president to get out of the motorcade and walk down pennsylvania avenue. The crowd that we have seen here, you are seeing up the rooftops the protesters tha have seen here have been peaceful protesters. We have not seen anything like my other colleagues have been covering this afternoon. But here again right near the u. S. Navy memorial we are anticipating the start of this inaugural parade. Back to you. We appreciate that. I think you heard you say that that crowd down there has neither heard nor caught the odor or been in any way disrupted by the activities further north from your area. We are now seeing what looks like the beginning process of the review of the troops before the new president of the United States. We are going to spend a couple of minutes to be able to tell you more specifically what it is we are watching there. It the president and mrs. Obma. A long day for those two, isnt it . It is. Starting very early this morning with 8 30 a. M. Church servi service. Coffee and tea with we are joined by somebody would we are glad to have here. Major lee spencer wise of the 3rd u. S. Infantry regiment and a member of the guard. Thank you for joining us. Who are you seeing marching in front of the president . These elements are the president ial escort and so these are ceremonial troops from the milt district of washington who are prepared to conduct our review for the new commander in chief. So youve got the u. S. Army band and a platoon from every service that is a part of our gets to go first. What is up with that . They get the honor of both leading the parade and being first in line as well. Can you tell us who is standing next to the president , between the president and Vice President . That is Major General bradley a. Becker, the commanding general of the military district of washington and serves with the joint task force of the National Capitol region. That is the chief guards and probably the oldest army and military element in our force. But that was George Washington handselected his guards when he became president and they represent those today. The replica of the original uniforms . They are. Those are the colonial uniforms. These men and women, forgive my ignorance. Do you audition for this . How do you march there today . You consider audition to an extent. These are members of the ceremonial and the joint Service Honor guards here in the mili so several of them have Selection Process and they train specifically to conduct ceremonies and to look great while marching. When you say trade, how long have they been training for this moment . Really for the inauguration, the last 18 month. Planning and preparation and coordination as well as the actually training to get out there and get in the parade elements and the pass and review. The musical, the band. All of those things really. They do a fantastic job. What kind of honor is it for these men and women who get to perform like this for the new chief deputy . Its a tremendous honor. Its been a long tradition and we are so honored to be a part of that. They take their job very seriously and they do it with a sense of pride and precision as are these men and women absolutely. Everything we do to prepare for this is no different than when we prepare for an operation overseas. Its planning, inspection and execution. So if someone were to go down right there, these men and women are good to go . They are combat ready . Absolutely. While that is not our role today and we have so many Law Enforcement that take great care of us today. Certainly we are prepared to defend in any manner we are asked to do. Today, we are just honored to be able to continue to march and take place in a peaceful transition of power. Looks like the transportation to the white house has just pulled up. The likes of which we will never see. That is true. That is just as well because we want it where it is. Tell us what that car weighs and the rivals the vehicle is . And how secure our parade coverage is beginning now. So now the thing that we are watching for and that everybody up and down that parade route from the capital to the white house is watching for is will the new president and mrs. Obama, will they get out of the car . We are going to paws for a moment and we will be still with you. Donald john trump. A new chapter in washington. I donald j. Trump do solemnly swear. Donald trump sworn in as our nations 45th president in front of thousands and in the meantime, president obama says goodbye. January 20th, 2017, will be remembered became the rulers of this nation again. Now President Trump and the first family make the trip from capitol hill to the white house, leading an inaugural parade packed with pomp and pageantry, a tradition that dates back 200 years. This is news 4 special coverage of the inaugural parade. Here now are jim vance and dor doreen gentzler. Thank you for joining us. The parade is kicking off from capitol hill in a few moments. We will be with you all afternoon. Our reports are along the route and spread out across the city as well. Right now, President Trump and his family have gotten into their limousine. The president just finished his review of the troops on capitol hill. This is an inaugural day tradition as we have been talking about before the first family makes their way up pennsylvania avenue. This year, there will be nearly 50 groups that are going to take parade. You can expect to see more than 8,000 people participating. Marching band and First Responders and each branch of the military will be represented in this parade today. We have cameras covering the parade up pennsylvania avenue and we are also in the crowd of hundreds of thousands gathered here to witness history firsthand. A look at the highlights from the inaugural ceremony at the capitol now. Cardinal Timothy Dolan one of a few to say prayers and choir sang america the beautiful and Vice President mike pence was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Clarence thomas. Ill slow down a little bit. Im a little ahead of the video, i think. That is the mormon tabernacle choir and swearing in of our n chief Justice John Roberts to administer the oath of office to our new president. Preserve, protect and defend. The constitution of the United States. The constitution of the United States. So help me god. So help me god. Congratulations, mr. President. Crowd didnt let the rain keep them away. Saw a lot of red, white and blue and those make America Great again caps. In his first address as president , mr. Trump promised to fight for all of america. Mr. Trump, we are having problem with the audio there. He said he would never, ever let americans down and he proclaimed again that america will start winning again. And ed winning like never before. The president then d any time getting to work. He took time to sign executive actions related to his cabinet picks. Then the president , the Vice President , and their families went to an inaugural luncheon in statuary hall. Another tradition part of the peaceful transfer of power and one that has an emotional impact on a lot of americans who hold the obama family in high esteem. The former president and first lady are private citizens for the first time in eight years. They departed the capitol on a military helicopter as soon as the inauguration ceremony was over and headed to base andrew. It was a quick trip and then the past president obama thanked his staffers. You proved the power of hope. Throughout this process, michelle and i, we have just been your front men. This has never been about us. It has always been about you. To all of you w amazing remarkable work, we could not be prouder of you. This has been the privilege of my life and i know i speak for michelle as well. We look forward to continuing this journey with all of you and i cant wait to see what you do next. With that, the obamas boarded a flight to palm springs, california. They have said they plan to take a little break, a family vacation, get some sleep and spend some time processing the last eight years but they made clear they do not plan to fade entirely from public view as some former first families have in years past. The president said, in fact, he is looking forward to turning off the alarm clock the parade this afternoon is the same route charted by Thomas Jefferson in the first inaugural parade more than two centuries ago now and kicks off from the u. S. Capitol business. The president and Vice President and plaza until they eventually arrive at the white house. There they will watch the rest of the parade from the president ial reviewing stand which is opposite Lafayette Park. Our new 4 team is along the parade route right now. Erika gonzalez is near the navy plas and pat is up near the Freedom Plaza and chris has a great view of the president ial reviewing stand. We have a panel of Experts Joining us this afternoon and covering it all from the pomp and the pageantry to the star significance of this day. We also covering, of course, safety and security. Including veteran parade announcer we want to make it clear and celebrate the fact that charlie is with us this afternoon. Charlie is known as the president s announcer. He has inauguration since 1957 from Dwight Eisenhower to barack obama obama. It is an honor to have him here with us all throughout this afternoon and this evening. Today, the president s announcer is our announcer. We are honored to have you here. Charlie, this is quite a pleasure to have you here with us today. Are you any more pumped today than you were on that first one, or was that first one, you know, pretty much unmasterable . The first one i was on the media complex roof and i had a script and i had lots of wind and rain and cold. I like it better here we like it better here too, charlie. We remember some pretty cold inaugural ceremonies ourselves a you throughout the next couple of hours. Wonderful. About this event. Im not going to let the rain rain on my parade. Absolutely not. You never have now so why start now, charlie . Lets check in with our reporters along the parade route as the president makes his way up pennsylvania avenue. The u. S. Navy memorial and that is where our Erika Gonzalez is right now. Reporter hi, vance. Yeah, we are very close to the u. S. Navy memorial. If you pan to my left youll see large amount of people. The crowd that has been growing as we expect the inauguration parade to begin any minute now. As you tilt up, youll see all of the people on the rooftops here along pennsylvania avenue waiting to see the 45th president of the United States of America Donald j. Trump and the first lady melania come up whether or not they will get out of the president ial motorcade is yet to be seen. We talked about the number of Law Enforcement personnel here and an additional 3,000 people here to assist d. C. Police to make this a safe and a fun inauguration parade. Youre hearing these are likely military helicopters above us. And then back over here on my righthand side is the peaceful protest that we have been seeing and hearing much of the morning and the afternoon, sign, music, very peaceful, though. We have not seen anything like my other colleagues have been witnessing today. The president has said that he wants this to be a somewhat short parade. 60 to 90 minutes. We have been hearing sound checks. A Trump Campaign volunteer steve raines is the parade announcer this year. And we are very privileged that at 89 years g parades under his belt, charlie bratman is joining us at news4 with his wisdom and delightful spirit. Charlie, thank you for being with us. Erika, thank you. Youre looking at the president ial limousine there. Rest assured, we have cameras all up and down this parade route and if anything hops out of that car, we will be all over it. So dont worry. We got it covered. The parade continues. The president , the floats and all of the bands will pass pat collins at Freedom Plaza. What is going on where you are, pat . How are you doing . Let me take care of a little business here. We are at Freedom Plaza 13th and pennsylvania avenue down there. We are about six blocks south of Franklin Square where all of the disruptions were. No clue of what was going on up there down here. Let me set the scene for over there is the Wilson Building and reagan ble heuildi here next door. Take a look at the people inside. I think they have some of the best seats for this parade. Certainly some of the driest. You asked hme about security. Look at the top of that building over there. Just two of the many people they have on on the buildings here, snipers on the building here just in case. They have been here all day. They are up and down the avenue. Of course, as we move down further, the trump hotel. Now the big question in each inaugural parade is he going to get out of that car . Will he get out of that car . Where will he get out of the car . Now, if youre donald trump, do you think he might get out in front of his hotel here on pennsylvania avenue . If he does, we will have it for you. If i am not mistaken isnt that the spot where youve been the last four inaugurations . Yeah. I bought a brick here that is about as much room as they give me down here. I got a little bit brick i can move just this way or that way. If i walk over here, well, im in another station. I go Dow Jones Industrial average there, im on cnn and its tight down here and cozy. A good thing youre slim and trim. We you to stay in your space. Okay. Chris lawrence is at the end of the parade route. In front of the white house at Lafayette Park where the president and his family will watch the parade from the reviewing stand there. Chris . I dont have as many as pat but this is my third inauguration in this very spot. Ill give you a look and let you see behind me. A beautiful view of the president iare the buses take their seats. We have also seen them start passing out these president ial blankets, going by with huge plastic bags and passing out the blankets to help keep people warm. I cannot tell you how much i would like to get my hand on one of those blankets after standing outside for so long. But, again, pat showed you some of the security high above. We can also see that as well. Take a look at the roof of the white house right behind and behind, that the washington monument. You can see the secret service and some of the security personnel, they have been up there all day. Now as we bring you back down to the ground. You can see some of the military band members starting to arrive here in front of the president ial reviewing stand. Of course, the colors that will be presented as well coming right behind. I also want to take you right there behind t bleachers. The thing youre going to notice is the lack of people here. If you pan down and you can see the empty seats along the bleachers here, having been here for the prior two inaugurations, i can tell you almost all of that was completely filled by this point. You dont expect a big flux of people at the last minute because once the president starts to move, and area is locked down. So you wont see large groups of people coming through here at the point that the president starts to make his way down. If you think of the parade sort of as the people following the president on his journey to the house here that they have provided, it is very appropriate to the message that we heard today from President Trump about being a man of the people, about giving the Government Back to the people. Again, this is going to be a smaller parade as we have heard before but, right now, the excitemi and we will have to keep an eye if he doesnt get out and walk outside of trump tower, i can almost guarantee up the president and first lady will get out and walk down this secure stretch before going up into the viewing stand. Vance . Everybody wants it to happen in front of them. Of course, they do. Thanks, chris. We will be coming back to you and stay warm as best can you. We are not feeling your pain because its balmy out there today compared to the youre looking at pictures up near Franklin Square around 13 and k in that area. Those are pictures i think from earlier in the day. There is a fire in northwest d. C. We have d. C. s interim police chief Peter Newsome with us a few minutes ago who explained that the smoke is pepper spray on some of the disrupters around that same area earlier today. We also 95 people have been arrested since those demonstrations and those disruptions starred earlier. We think that is around 13th and k. K and l doesnt narrow it down quite much. Here we go. I think now seems like a good time to ask major wallace what we are seeing here. Got a great view there of all the motorcycles of d. C. Metro police. Is this the escort . It is. The very front of the president ial escort so as they approach in Lafayette Park you see the flashing lights and service folks, right, with the d. C. Police and then shortly behind them will be the commanding general, general becker and his staff, along with his colors. What every biker in america can appreciate now is roll ahead of the general and the others behind them. He has a side car and its a lot easier. They are on two wheels and that is something we all as a matter of fact practice and i think everybody would say envision themselves in that particular formation ahead of the president at the inaugural parade. How do you go that slowly on two wheels . Its not that difficult if you know what youre doing and ill leave it at that. I might try it on a bicycle but not a motorcycle. Its the center of gravity. I will never find out. Are we going to check in with Megan Fitzgerald now . We are going to stay with this, because someone might jump out of the car i think is why we are staying with it. Major, we heard Chris Lawrence refer to the first parade arriving in front of the white house. That wasnt the first of the parade, was it . No, it wasnt. Just before the president ial escort will move into position there there is a cordon. A joint cordon compromised of the members of the five armed forces will establish a cordon there and prepare to vend ceremonial honors as the escort and commander in chief arrives. We are going to Megan Fitzgerald im sorry, Erika Gonzalez. Where is she . On the parade route. Hey there. Im here along the parade route. The very start of the parade. And we just saw the d. C. Police on their motorcycles as you were so eloquently explaining. Here we are seeing some large black suvs coming down the stretch and is that a marching band behind them . I believe maybe military . Im seeing some type of instruments with them. The crowd chanting just a few moments ago. Usa, usa. We believe that there are about the same number of participants this year as there have been in previous years. About 8,000 participants. A few fewer groups but about the same number of parade participants that will be coming down this one and a half mile stretch from the u. S. Capitol up to the white house. I was talking to a d. C. Borne lady that lives in rockville that was tell me she had voted for the new president and i was asking her about this dreary weather we have been having all day long, this nuisance of rain. They say rain on your wedding day is good luck so i think this is fabulous luck for the but it has just been really a very dreary day. The rain just kind of coming and going. Chilly. I know i wont complain because i know you guys have been there and done that in more scenarios. We are now hearing much more vocal protests over here to my right. I want to be cautious when we pan over there because there are some signs that have some explicit wordings that we need to be careful of. But look at the people at the tops of these buildings as well and coming out to see the 45th president of the United States of america. As we were mentioning to you, these protests that we have seen here, we have felt very safe. These have been peaceful protests. We have seen signage, music, chanting, but these have been peaceful protests. And then just look at the men and women that are lining this famous stretch of pesy area, some additional Law Enforcement personnel here to back up with d. C. Police. We are hearing and seeing the military march up pennsylvania avenue. Lets stop for a second so you can listen in. The military passing the museum now in our sight at making their way up toward the white house. Can you tell us who we are seeing here . Elements of the president ial escort right there in the forefront. United States Air Force and coast guardsmen matching in front of the commander and chief guard, the old gauard. These are the same troops our new president was viewing escort him down to the white house . Thats true. Once he deems they are looking great, they get in the escort and everyone follows along. You see the cordon members there rendering the ceremonial honors. They are marching to the speed of the whole shebang . They do. I tell you what, they are rock steady and right in step as always. You see the drum corps there from the u. S. Army old guard there to escort the president playing their fight. Large crowds here. Erikas location toward memorial and as opposed to what Chris Lawrence is seeing in the viewing stand at the white house. Lafayette square. Freedom plaza. Im sorry. Freedom plaza. How are things on your brick, pat . Here, doreen. You can see the motorcycle squad from the Police Department and that famous v as they make their way down pennsylvania avenue and headed towards the Ronald Reagan building and then in front of the Wilson Building. An honor guard i believe from the metropolitan police behind them. Traditionally the chief of police leads this parade as well and would be in that car back there but i dont know if chief pete newsome is going to to be here because of the protests and demonstrations and disturbances up town. But we expect that some Police Official will be in that car. As you look down pennsylvania avenue, you can see the security heren place. We have military personnel, we have police officers, we have those barricades lining pennsylvania avenue to keep everybody in the pa r toward the whiouse. I got to say this. You know . New york has the to say this. You know, new york has the macys day parade and pasadena has the rose parade. Vance, you know philadelphia has the mummers parade. But its only here in washington that we have a parade that has the president of the United States in it. And they just cant top that. No, they cant. Our parade only happens every four years instead of an annual event too. Which is good. I agree, pat. They are always in step, as opposed to i can speak for the mummers parade. Nobody up there is sober enough come new years day. These guys are on the money. Cannot compare this to the mummers parade, no way. Not even close. Th
