So now were not just talking about the temperatures and the wind but now our concern shifts to the possibility of black ice on the roads. Yeah, exactly, erika. Anything that wasnt cleared throughout the day today is going to turn to solid ice tonight as temperatures plummet into the teens and with blustery winds out there as well. Take a look at our storm system first on storm team 4 radar. You can see the entire area now dry as this storm takes aim mainly for parts of new england. Were dry for the rest of the weekend, but bundle up. Its 23 degrees out there right now. Winds out of the northwest at 13 miles an hour. So look at how cold it feels when you factor in the winds right now. Feeling about 9 in frederick and gaithersburg, 11 here in the district and blustery from start to finish tomorrow. Heres what youre going to be waking up to at 7 00 a. M. On your sunday, feeling about 1 degree below in gaithersburg, about 2 in manassas. It doesnt get much better. Reporter theres no doubt about it, snowpacked roads can lead to dangerous driving conditions, even with efforts made to make roads safer for drivers. I slid, i have a 4x4 and even slid. Reporter several cars slitd off the roadway. But Charles County deputies say this one was the worst. Investigators say slick conditions caused this driver to slide off the road and into a pole. Crews had to cut through the vehicle to rescue the man and his 8yearold son. Deputies say this was the first accident of the day in Charles County, but it wasnt the last. Morning saw passable roads across much of northern virginia. Along i26 combination of chemicals and traffic had pavement down to the black top, about an inch of snow on untreated surfaces, even winding back roads were treated and safe. Its not that bad. Ive seen worse. Reporter here in fredericksburg, by midday a bit worse. Different conditions, heavier snow. Still r drivers being cautious and patient. Good advice anywhere any time especially under these conditions. Virginia state police had a busy morning responding to more than 300 crashes, most in Central Virginia between midnight and noon. We are following some breaking news out of the district tonight where theres been a shooting. D. C. Police got the call around 4 30 this afternoon after a man was shot in the chest. This happened on sixth street in southeast where youre seeing this video from were told the man was unconscious when emts rushed him to the hospital. Police are now looking for three men that were wearing ski masks during that incident. Now to a developing story. We have learned that three people that were hurt in the ft. Lauderdale airport attack are doing a lot better tonight. Five other people were killed when a man baggage claim. Nbcs sara rosario is in florida as investigators look into the suspects past. Reporter the images, the sounds. That kind of blood curtling scream as people were trapped. Reporter widespread panic as passengers at the ft. Lauderdale airport run for their lives. And hes just randomly, you know, point and shoot, point and shoot anyone in his line of fire. Reporter the bullets killed five people and injured six others br alleged gunman Esteban Santiago ran out of ammunition and surrendered to police. We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack. But again, its very early in the investigation and were pursuing all angles. Reporter everything from mental instability to an act of terror. Santiagos family members told police he was Getting Mental Health treatment in alaska after reportedly hearing voices. In november he walked into an fbi office telling agents the government was recruiting him to isis. There have been concerns was not placed on a nofly list. I want to be clear, during our initial investigation we found no ties to terrorism. Reporter it also calls to question guns on planes. The law allows checked guns and ammunition as long as its unloaded and locked in a hardsided container. With several still in the hospital, the focus now is safety and building trust. Authorities tell us a kid was charging this hover board when it ignited and burned the duplex in southwest where it was inside. Three people made it out safely. Were told this hover board in question was a christmas gift. According to police the woman called 911 saying she had a protective order against her exhusband and she thought he was on drugs. Officers confronted the man inside the home. Thats when they say he choked onf struggle with two others. Police then shot and killed him. The woman and her three small children were not hurt in this incident. In northern virginia, a family and their pet hog pebble will not be able to stay in their home tonight thats because a fire tore through the garage and then spread into their house in Loudon County this morning. The cold weather made it really hard for firefighters to be able to put this out. In fact, an ambulance bus had to come to the scene to give First Responders a place to be able to warm up and continue to fight the fire. Firefighters tell us that nobody was hurt and theyre working to learn what started that fire in the first place. There is now a safe and warm place for young people in the district to go when they need a little extra help. D. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and leaders announced the opening of a new transitioning housing opening for beyond being a safe place to stay, the program will offer will also offer case management, help and support. Weve identified almost half of the Homeless Youth as lgbtq. And then they tell us the reason that theyre homeless is because of their Sexual Orientation or gender identity. We can do better.
