Sanders was in jeopardy of being left off the ballot because of a clerical error. As Mark Segraves reports, the Council Voted to fix that today. But not everybody was in agreement. Mark . Yeah, good evening jim. While the council was quick to approve sanders for the ballot, two d. C. Council members did not vote in favor of it. Both for very different reasons. The ayes have it unanimously. While technically it was a unanimous vote two Council Members were not among the yes votes, Council Member Vincent Orange voted present rather than yes or no. Before the vote at a meeting he questioned whether the council should be interfering in party politics. And put some of the blame on senator sanders. In this particular case, the Bernie Sanders campaign did not put people on the streets in the District Of Columbia to collect signatures. They decided to pay so this is where we find ourselves today. The Sanders Campaign followed all the rules. And paid a 2500 fee to appear on the ballot rather than collecting investigates. Hillary clinton did both. But the Democratic Party did not file the paperwork on behalf of the candidates until the day after the deadline according to the board of elections. Council member anita bonds recused herself from todays vote because she also serves as the chairman of the Democratic State party. You think mr. Sanders should be on the ballot . I think that anyone who is and wants to run for president and follows the guidelines as prescribed should be, yes. I have no problem with that. Well right after, right before the sentence was imposed, the killer, minh nguyen, broke down crying, sobbing, telling the judge he takes the blame for the murder. But the judge told him he fears nguyen may still be a danger to the victims family. And so he imposed a sentence well beyond the recommended guidelines. Tears shed by the victims family and friends, replaced by hugs and smiles after the sentencing. From the time Denise Mattison arrived at her town home last year to find her husband Corey Mattison mortally wounded she called him her hero. When minh nguyen burst into the house shooting and hitting him four times. He led the shooter out the door. He knew what he was doing, he was taking the danger and luring it away from us, theres no question in my mind. Prosecutors told the judge they came to the same conclusion about mattisons actions that tragic night. Say nguyen was fuelled by an obsessive rage o 2015. After he learned his exwifes new husband was caring for his kids, he fired the first shot even before he got into the house. Then after shooting mattison, he jumped on top of him, punching the dying man. Nguyens family urged the judge to show mercy. Pointing to his struggles with Mental Illness. But the judge decided Denise Mattison and her kids shouldnt have to fear nguyen any longer. Theres no victory here. Am i able to now say to my children, when they ask, are they going to continue to be in danger . Can i now give them that promise . I can. But even that doesnt make me feel good inside about that. Mattie is the oldest of denise and the defendants three children she took the witness stand and testified for the prosecution. She has changed her last name to mattison and now considers the victim her father. I did my best and i wanted to honor corey, my dad, any way possible. And i wanted to don could be safe. The youngest mattison, baby corey, born eight months after her fathers death. Denise tells me the little girl has already been given a book that tells her fathers heroic story. Back to you in the studio, jim. Julie carey, thanks. Three people from florida have been arrested at Tysons Corner center. Theyre accusing of running a shoplifting ring. Security workers at lord taylor store called police after they saw the suspects in the store last month. Fairfax county police say they found 76,000 worth of stolen items in the suspects car. Theyre also accused of having tools to remove security sensors from the merchandise. According to a 2011 news report, a florida woman with the same name as one of the suspects was arrested at a mall in the boston area, in that case, she was accused of stealing items from a bloomingdales than 90,000 worth of merchandise in her car. Back then. A new report suggests the hacking at Medstar Health systems may have been easily preventible. The hackers broke into a computer server that had a known vulnerability. A person familiar with the investigation told the nbc washington app that hackers exploited a wellknown design flaw on the Medstar Health network. Urgent public warnings about the flaw began at least nine years ago. The fix is as simple as installing an available update. Medstar says it continuously applies patches to fix vulnerabilities in their software. When we have issues with metro most of the time it has to do with the trains. New at 6 00, a dozen strip clubs in Prince Georges County are being forced to close their doors. It comes after a yearlong battle between the county and the businesses. Doreen, the ebony End Dance Club is one of the clubs that has been told it has until friday to close its doors. Were right here. Its right here. For years, brian lived less than a block from irvings in capital heights, a strip club licensed as a banquet hall. It was just a lot of unnecessary people coming last friday, that venue now operating under another name, ordered to cease and desist by court order, along with 11 other Adult Entertainment clubs in Prince Georges County. The order was passed by the department of permits and inspections. The order means they have a week from last friday. The closings come after a yearlong court battle. County officials are using violations of zoning laws to close the doors of the clubs, that some residents consider to be nuisances. Folks who live in the neighborhoods dont want the added traffic this he dont want the noise that they generate. And they dont want that type of establishment in a community. County Officials Say the clubs need to be located in Light Industrial or warehouse districts only. After a year of fighting the establishments in court the county won last week. The courts certainly came down in favor of the county. And we are of cse close those types of establishments and have been trying to close those types of establishments in residential areas. Its a business for some. I just think it should be not in a residential area. If it has to be that, then take it somewhere else. According to the department of permits, some of these clubs have stopped operating as strip clubs on their own. Others have gone ahead and filed to try to see if they can turn this whole thing around. They have one more appeal left. Now we tried contacting the attorney who is representing 11 of these businesses that have been told to shut down. He did not return our phone calls. Amtrak maintenance workers were fixing rail ties on tracks sunday morning. Active tracks where the train approached them at 106 miles per hour. Which by the way sunday the posted speed limit of 110. The train black boxes show that the engineer hit the brakes just five seconds before the train slammed into a backhoe that was 35 passengers on the train were injured. A doctor at the scene took pictures of the carnage. The damage on the train was unbelievable. The window had been torn out of the side of the train and was lying across two sets of the chairs. There was metal, theres broken glass. There was plastic. It looked horrific. The train was headed from new york bound for savannah, georgia. It had just left philadelphia when the crash happened. Federal railroad regulations require multiple safety checks to be in place when track work is under way. An employee at the d. C. Headquarters of the u. S. Now were entering a twobedroom transitional housing unit. Many of our families stay here up to two years. Executive director of alexandrias community lodgings, the group provided a refuge for denise and her family. This morning of two escaped an abusive husband. My son, he was only seven or eight. He couldnt protect himself. And here it was, i had a baby, what could the baby do to protect himself. So i had to leave. For two years this became her home. Community lodgings providing resources for denise to find success. I had to relearn how to just take care of myself. Because i had lost touch of that. A big part of this program is about creating a comm a real safe place. So for some of the families and their children who live in the transitional apartments, they offer several workshops, many of which are held just across the street. A lot of these kids come from broken families, theyre coming from central america. Maybe theyre living with an aunt and uncle who theyre just meeting for the first time. More than after school day care. The instructors lead an afterschool curriculum. An Instructional Program available to every child in alexandria. We give them a safe environment to come to after school every afternoon. Denise and her boys graduated from the program. Her sons are consistently making honor roll and shes found success in her own career. Now supporting her own family. She says it all started with finding that safe space.
