The whole time im screaming, get out, get out, get out. Reporter billy barks went outside, grabbed an extension ladder and climbed to a second floor window to get sarah. I latched on to her and i just hit the ground. I didnt hold on to the ladder and her at the same time. I just held her and took the fall. Reporter killed in the fire, billy barks wife mary, and 7yearold daughter emily. He went back on that ladder to save them, but the fire was too hot. The smoke too intense. He had to back off. It was the most difficult decision i ever made in my life when i walked down that ladder. I felt helpless. I wanted to jump in, but i figured if i did, and i didnt get out, she would be an orphan. I didnt want to leave. Reporter sarah suffered burns to both arms. Burns so painful, they have to put her to sleep to change the dressings. In her Childrens Hospital room, there are all sorts of well wishes from classmates, neighbors and friends. Shes getting better. But theres more healing to be done. How are you feeling . We are just about an hour away from the start of the concert for valor, and there has already been some excitement down on the mall. Our cameras caught some people trying to jump security barriers. This guys run didnt last long. He got slammed by security, then secret Service Agents maced and cuffed him. Our Mark Segraves saw at least three guys try to do the same thing, jump from the general admission section to the vip section. Tonights concert for valor will bring some of the biggest names in music to the National Mall, including bruce springsteen, rihanna, eminem and Carrie Underwood among others. It kicks off in about an hour. Want to we have Team Coverage of all of it. Wendy rieger in the thick of it and joins us live. Hi, wendy. Reporter hi there. You can tell the concert is getting close. Because they have jacked up the videos theyre showing, trying to get people in the mood. So i can only imagine when metallica comes on stage, its going to rip our faces off. It has been actually an oasis of calm prior to now. Because the crowd got here early. They have been a very dignified, very polite, very sweet crowd. A lot of people coming in right now, because theyre letting the vip people come in, they have tickets and filling in this orchestra seating area in front of this stage. So its really been except for that kerfuffle with those three guys, gate crashers being arrested, its been a wellbehaved, calm day here at the National Mall. A lot of vets here today, people coming and remembering vets. I talked to some young woman from Potomac High School about a young man who also attended potomac who was lost in afghanistan. My best friend doug actually passed away in afghanistan august 2011. So we came out here to celebrate our vets and im here telling the vets his story as well as learning theirs too. Reporter what was his name . Doug green. We like to go down to arlington, visit him, hang out and then come here. Reporter which is lovely. Getting here today was not as bad as i think people thought, because we didnt have 800 we dont have 800,000 people. They have permits for 800,000. We dont have anywhere near that amount. But traveling anywhere around this area was tough. Lets go to adam tuss who has been looking at transportation all day long of the adam . Reporter hey, wendy. I dont think were going oh hit the 800,000 mark, but certainly a lot of people coming down to the mall. The intensity picking up a little bit here. Lets take a look at the la fant plaza metro station, not far from the mall at all. And metro tells us the crowd, about half the size of a typical workday. So far, so good. Getting to the mall. Military members lined up at the ready to help with crowd control during the concert, which is in their honor. Fans fanned out early. Riding a bike, not a bad choice to get here, if you could find a spot to park. The metro we felt would be really crowded and driving is just absurd with the road blocks. So biking seemed like the best option. Reporter on metro, its been steady, and now the focus turns to getting everyone out all at once. What we want folks to know, if they are going to make a lastminute decision to make their way down to the mall, make sure you have enough money on your smart trip card to get here and also home at the end of the event. That will prevent those long lines at the fair vending machines. Reporter and remember, metro says it could take hours to clear the mall later tonight. So do be patient. And now remember, metro says there are nine stations right around the mall that will stay open as late as needed tonight to get everyone out of here. But you have to be in line by midnight to catch a train. But first, hey, weve got to have a concert. Weve got to see metallica rip wendys face off. So back to you for that, wendy. Reporter its going to happen. I can feel it. Just these announcements are ripping my face off. Its again, were getting all geared up, because its going to be starting in less than an hour.
