A neighbor says the cops have been there before. This statement tonight from the family gregs lifes work was about fighting crime and, unfortunately, it was a Violent Crime that took his life. Tonight fire ifitious in Prince Georges County say smoke detectors might have made the difference between life and death for members of a family in glennarden, a father and two daughters died. Just a short time ago, county fire official told me they are not releasing the names of the victims here or the cause of this fatal fire. Early this morning, you had three people die here despite heroic rescue efforts. We do have some success, but overall it is an extreme tragedy. Reporter it began about 4 00 a. M. Firefighters arriving less than five minutes after receiving emergency calls from neighbors. They faced very dangerous conditions, fire showing and heavy smoke. He ran hoses and ladders, as they began pulling people out of the house. One fighter fighter carried an 11yearold girl revived by the paramedic outside. The mother of the family jumped to safety. She and an 8yearold daughter are being treated for smoke inhalation, but the twin sister of the 8yearold died. So did a 4yearold sister and their father. It appears the house did not have working smoke detectors. I dont know yet whether it was smoke or fire that caused the deaths, and we wont know that for some time. But i can tell you that smoke is that silent killer, and thats where smoke alarms come in. And i can tell you that a smoke alarm would have given them an extra measure of chance that i can tell you they didnt have. Firefighters spent the asp nothinging on neighbors doors, asking if they have working smoke detectors, for those who dont, offering to installed them, an investigation into the cause of this fatal fire is being conducted by county fire, police and federal atf agents.
